RESUMO

Photoelectrochemical (PEC) coupling of CO2 and nitrate can provide a useful and green source of urea, but the process is affected by the photocathodes with poor charge-carrier dynamics and low conversion efficiency. Here, a NiFe diatomic catalysts/TiO2 layer/nanostructured n+p-Si photocathode is rationally designed, achieving a good charge-separation efficiency of 78.8% and charge-injection efficiency of 56.9% in the process of PEC urea synthesis. Compared with the electrocatalytic urea synthesis by using the same catalysts, the Si-based photocathode shows a similar urea yield rate (81.1 mg·h-1·cm-2) with a higher faradic efficiency (24.2%, almost twice than the electrocatalysis) at a lower applied potential under 1 sun illumination, meaning that a lower energy-consumption method acquires more aimed productions. Integrating the PEC measurements and characterization results, the synergistic effect of hierarchical structure is the dominating factor for enhancing the charge-carrier separation, transfer, and injection by the matched band structure and favorable electron-migration channels. This work provides a direct and efficient route of solar-to-urea conversion.

RESUMO

A concept of solar energy convertible zinc-air battery (SZAB) is demonstrated through rational design of an electrode coupled with multifunction. The multifunctional electrode is fabricated using nitrogen-substituted graphdiyne (N-GDY) with large π-conjugated carbonous network, which can work as photoresponsive bifunctional electrocatalyst, enabling a sunlight-promoted process through efficient injection of photoelectrons into the conduction band of N-GDY. SZAB enables direct conversion and storage of solar energy during the charging process. Such a battery exhibits a lowered charge voltage under illumination, corresponding to a high energy efficiency of 90.4% and electric energy saving of 30.3%. The battery can display a power conversion efficiency as high as 1.02%. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the photopromoted oxygen evolution reaction kinetics originates from the transition from the alkyne bonds to double bonds caused by the transfer of excited electrons, which changes the position of highest occupied molecular orbital and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital, thus greatly promoting the formation of intermediates to the conversion process. Our findings provide conceptual and experimental confirmation that batteries are charged directly from solar energy without the external solar cells, providing a way to manufacture future energy devices.

RESUMO

Photoelectrochemical (PEC) cells provide a promising solution for the synthesis of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Herein, an integrated photocathode of p-type BiVO4 (p-BVO) array with tetragonal zircon structure coupled with different metal oxide (MOx, M = Sn, Ti, Ni, and Zn) heterostructure and NiNC cocatalyst (p-BVO/MOx/NiNC) was synthesized for the PEC oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in production of H2O2. The p-BVO/SnO2/NiNC array achieves the production rate 65.46 µmol L-1 h-1 of H2O2 with a Faraday efficiency (FE) of 76.12%. Combined with the H2O2 generation of water oxidation from the n-type Mo-doped BiVO4 (n-Mo:BVO) photoanode, the unbiased photoelectrochemical cell composed of a p-BVO/SnO2/NiNC photocathode and n-Mo:BVO photoanode achieves a total FE of 97.67% for H2O2 generation. The large area BiVO4-based tandem cell of 3 × 3 cm2 can reach a total H2O2 production yield of 338.84 µmol L-1. This work paves the way for the rational design and fabrication of artificial photosynthetic cells for the production of liquid solar fuel.

RESUMO

Solar energy, as a renewable energy source, dominates the vast majority of human energy, which can be harvested and converted by photovoltaic solar cells. However, the intermittent availability of solar energy restricts the actual utilization circumstances of solar cells. Integrating photo-responsive electrodes into an energy storage device emerges as a dependable and executable strategy, fostering the creation of photo-stimulated batteries that seamlessly amalgamate the process of solar energy collection, conversion, and storage in one system. Endowed by virtues such as cost-effectiveness, facile manufacturing, safety, and environmental friendliness, photo-stimulated Zn-based batteries have attracted considerable attention. The progress report furnishes a brief overview, summarizing various photo-stimulated Zn-based batteries. Their configurations, operational principles, advancements, and the intricate engineering of photoelectrode designs are introduced, respectively. Through rigorous architectural design, photo-stimulated Zn-based batteries exhibit the ability to initiate charging by saving electricity usage, and in certain instances, even without the need for external electrical grids under illumination. Furthermore, the compensation of solar energy can be explored to improve the output electric energy. At last, opportunities and challenges toward photo-stimulated Zn-based batteries in the process of development are proposed and discussed in the hope of expanding their application scenarios and accelerating the commercialization progress.

RESUMO

A novel iridium (III) complex bearing boron dipyrromethene (Bodipy) as the light-harvesting antenna has been synthesized and is firstly employed as photosensitizer to assemble a dye-sensitized NiO photocathode. The assembled photocathode exhibits significantly improved photoelectrochemical (PEC) performance. Integrating the prepared photocathode with hybridization chain reaction (HCR)--based signal amplification strategy, a cathodic PEC biosensor is proposed for the detection of microRNA-133a (miRNA-133a). In the presence of the target, HCR is triggered to form long duplex concatamers on the photocathode, which allows numerous manganese porphyrins (MnPP) to bind in the dsDNA groove. With the help of H2O2, MnPP with peroxidase-like activity catalyzes 4--chloro-1-naphthol (4-CN) to produce benzo--4--chlorohexadienone (4-CD) precipitate on the electrode, leading to a significant decrease of photocurrent signal. The decreased photocurrent correlates linearly with the target concentration from 0.1 fM to 1 nM with a detection limit of 66.2 aM (S/N = 3). The proposed PEC strategy exhibits delightful selectivity, reproducibility and stability.

RESUMO

Transformation of carbon dioxide and nitrate ions into urea offers an attractive route for both nitrogen fertilizer production and environmental remediation. However, achieving this transformation under mild conditions remains challenging. Herein, we report an efficient photoelectrochemical method for urea synthesis by co-reduction of carbon dioxide and nitrate ion over a Cu2O photocathode, delivering urea formation rate of 29.71±2.20 µmol g-1 h-1 and Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 12.90±1.15 % at low external potential (-0.017 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode). Experimental data combined with theoretical calculations suggest that the adsorbed CO* and NO2* species are the key intermediates, and associated C-N coupling is the rate-determining step. This work demonstrates that Cu2O is an efficient catalyst to drive co-reduction of CO2 and NO3 - to urea under light irradiation with low external potential, showing great opportunity of photoelectrocatalysis as a sustainable tool for value-added chemical synthesis.

RESUMO

Ammonia (NH3 ) is recognized as a transportable carrier for renewable energy fuels. Photoelectrochemical nitrate reduction reaction (PEC NO3 RR) offers a sustainable solution for nitrate-rich wastewater treatment by directly converting solar energy to ammonia. In this study, we demonstrate the highly selective PEC ammonia production from NO3 RR by constructing a CoCu/TiO2 /Sb2 Se3 photocathode. The constructed CoCu/TiO2 /Sb2 Se3 photocathode achieves an ammonia Faraday efficiency (FE) of 88.01 % at -0.2 VRHE and an ammonia yield as high as 15.91 µmol h-1 cm-2 at -0.3 VRHE with an excellent onset potential of 0.43 VRHE . Dynamics experiments and theoretical calculations have demonstrated that the CoCu/TiO2 /Sb2 Se3 photocathode possesses high light absorption capacity, excellent carrier transfer capability, and high charge separation and transfer efficiencies. The photocathode can effectively adsorb the reactant NO3 - and intermediate, and the CoCu co-catalyst increases the maximum Gibbs free energy difference between NO3 RR and HER. Meanwhile, the Co species enhances the spin density of Cu, and increases the density of states near the Fermi level in pdos, which results in a high PEC NO3 RR activity on CoCu/TiO2 /Sb2 Se3 . This work provides a new avenue for the feasibility of efficient PEC ammonia synthesis from nitrate-rich wastewater.

RESUMO

Photorechargeable zinc ion batteries (PZIBs), which can directly harvest and store solar energy, are promising technologies for the development of a renewable energy society. However, the incompatibility requirement between narrow band gap and wide coverage has raised severe challenges for high-efficiency dual-functional photocathodes. Herein, half-metallic vanadium (III) oxide (V2O3) was first reported as a dual-functional photocathode for PZIBs. Theoretical and experimental results revealed its unique photoelectrical and zinc ion storage properties for capturing and storing solar energy. To this end, a synergistic protective etching strategy was developed to construct carbon superstructure-supported V2O3 nanospheres (V2O3@CSs). The half-metallic characteristics of V2O3, combined with the three-dimensional superstructure assembled by ultrathin carbon nanosheets, established rapid charge transfer networks and robust framework for efficient and stable solar-energy storage. Consequently, the V2O3@CSs photocathode delivered record zinc ion storage properties, including a photo-assisted discharge capacities of 463 mAh∙g-1 at 2.0 A∙g-1 and long-term cycling stability over 3000 cycles. Notably, the PZIBs assembled using V2O3@CSs photocathodes could be photorecharged without an external circuit, exhibiting a high photo conversion efficiency (0.354%) and photorecharge voltage (1.0 V). This study offered a promising direction for the direct capture and storage of solar energy.

RESUMO

Environmental pollution and energy crisis have recently become one of the major global concerns. Insincere discharge of massive amount of organic and inorganic wastes into the aqueous bodies causes serious impact on our environment. However, these organic substances are significant sources of carbon and energy that could be sustainably utilized rather than being discarded. Photocatalytic fuel cell (PFC) is a smart and novel energy conversion device that has the ability to achieve dual benefits: degrading the organic contaminants and simultaneously generating electricity, thereby helping in environmental remediation. This article presents a detailed study of the recent advancements in the development of PFC systems and focuses on the fundamental working principles of PFCs. The degradation of various common organic and inorganic contaminants including dyes and antibiotics with simultaneous power generation and hydrogen evolution has been outlined. The impact of various operational factors on the PFC activity has also been briefly discussed. Moreover, it provides an overview of the design guidelines of the different PFC systems that has been developed recently. It also includes a mention of the materials employed for the construction of the photo electrodes and highlights the major limitations and relevant research scopes that are anticipated to be of interest in the days to come. The review is intended to serve as a handy resource for researchers and budding scientists opting to work in this area of PFC devices.

RESUMO

Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) provide new opportunities for the sustainable production of energy, converting organic matter into electricity through microorganisms. Moreover, MFCs play an important role in remediation of environmental pollutants from wastewater with power generation. This work focuses on the evaluation of ferroelectric perovskite materials as a new class of non-precious photocatalysts for MFC cathode construction. Nanoparticles of BaTiO3 (BT) were prepared and tested in a microbial fuel cell (MFC) as photocathode catalytic components. The catalyst phases were synthesized, identified and characterized by XRD, SEM, UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy, P-E hysteresis and dielectric measurements. The maximum absorption of BT nanoparticles was recorded at 285 nm and the energy gap (Eg) was estimated to be 3.77 eV. Photocatalytic performance of cathodes coated with BaTiO3 was measured in a dark environment and then in the presence of a UV-visible (UV-Vis) light source, using a mixture of dairy industry and domestic wastewater as a feedstock for the MFCs. The performance of the BT cathodic component is strongly dependent on the presence of UV-Vis irradiation. The BT-based cathode functioning under UV-visible light improves the maximum power densities and the open circuit voltage (OCV) of the MFC system. The values increased from 64 mW m-2 to 498 mW m-2 and from 280 mV to 387 mV, respectively, showing that the presence of light effectively improved the photocatalytic activity of this ceramic. Furthermore, the MFCs operating under optimal conditions were able to reduce the chemical oxygen demand load in wastewater by 90% (initial COD = 2500 mg L-1).

RESUMO

We report a precious-metal-free molecular catalyst-based photocathode that is active for aqueous CO2 reduction to CO and methanol. The photoelectrode is composed of cobalt phthalocyanine molecules anchored on graphene oxide which is integrated via a (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane linker to p-type silicon protected by a thin film of titanium dioxide. The photocathode reduces CO2 to CO with high selectivity at potentials as mild as 0 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode (vs RHE). Methanol production is observed at an onset potential of -0.36 V vs RHE, and reaches a peak turnover frequency of 0.18 s-1 . To date, this is the only molecular catalyst-based photoelectrode that is active for the six-electron reduction of CO2 to methanol. This work puts forth a strategy for interfacing molecular catalysts to p-type semiconductors and demonstrates state-of-the-art performance for photoelectrochemical CO2 reduction to CO and methanol.

RESUMO

Silicon semiconductor functionalized with molecular catalysts emerges as a promising cathode for photoelectrochemical (PEC) CO2 reduction reaction (CO2 RR). However, the limited kinetics and stabilities remains a major hurdle for the development of such composites. We herein report an assembling strategy of silicon photocathodes via chemically grafting a conductive graphene layer onto the surface of n+ -p Si followed by catalyst immobilization. The covalently-linked graphene layer effectively enhances the photogenerated carriers transfer between the cathode and the reduction catalyst, and improves the operating stability of the electrode. Strikingly, we demonstrate that altering the stacking configuration of the immobilized cobalt tetraphenylporphyrin (CoTPP) catalyst through calcination can further enhance the electron transfer rate and the PEC performance. At the end, the graphene-coated Si cathode immobilized with CoTPP catalyst managed to sustain a stable 1-Sun photocurrent of -1.65 mA cm-2 over 16 h for CO production in water at a near neutral potential of -0.1 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode. This represents a remarkable improvement of PEC CO2 RR performance in contrast to the reported photocathodes functionalized with molecular catalysts.

RESUMO

The Z-scheme overall solar water splitting is a mimic of natural photosynthesis to convert solar energy into chemical energy. Since the energy levels of most organic semiconductors match well with the hydrogen evolution potential, they have great application prospects as photocathodes in Z-scheme photoelectrochemical systems. However, due to the weak light absorption and difficult carrier separation, the photocurrent density and onset potential of organic photocathodes are still low. To solve these problems, we introduced a copper nanosheets array (Cu NSA) framework under organic layers to increase the surface reaction sites, improve the light absorption and enhance the distribution range of built-in electric field simultaneously. As a result, the photocurrent density and onset potential of poly(3-hexylthiophene) : [6,6]-phenyl-C61 -butyric acid (P3HT : PCBM) photocathode were enhanced significantly. The onset potential increased by 50 mV to 0.65 V vs. RHE, and the photocurrent density reached -1 mA cm-2 at 0 V vs. RHE, which was 18 times that of the sample without Cu NSA. The optimized photocathode was connected with titanium dioxide nanorods array photoanode in a tandem manner to realize the spontaneous overall water splitting. Without bias and co-catalyst, the photocurrent density was maintained at 110 µA cm-2 and the solar-to-fuel conversion efficiency was 0.14 % in neutral solution. These results provide a feasible method for optimizing the performance of organic photocathodes.

RESUMO

A "signal-on" dual-mode aptasensor based on photoelectrochemical (PEC) and electrochemical (EC) signals was established for kanamycin (Kana) assay by using a novel Z-scheme AgBr/AgI-Ag-CNTs composite as sensing platform, an aptamer structure switch, and K3[Fe(CN)6] as photoelectron acceptor and electrochemical signal indicator. The aptamer structure switch was designed to obtain a "signal-off" state, which included an extended Kana aptamer (APT), one immobilized probe (P1), and one blocking probe (P2) covalently linked with graphdiyne oxide (GDYO) nanosheets. P1, P2, and aptamer formed the double helix structure, which resulted in the inhibited photocurrent intensity because of the weak conductivity of double helix layer and serious electrostatic repulsion of GDYO towards K3[Fe(CN)6]. In the presence of Kana, APT specifically bound to the target and dissociated from P1 and P2, and thus, a "signal-on" state was initiated by releasing P2-GDYO from the platform. Based on the sensing platform and the aptamer structure switch, the dual-mode aptasensor realized the linear determination ranges of 1.0 pM-2.0 µM with a detection limit (LOD) of 0.4 pM (for PEC method) and 10 pM-5.0 µM with a LOD of 5 pM (for EC method). The aptasensor displayed good application potential for Kana test in real samples.

RESUMO

With a band gap close to the Shockley-Quiesser limit and excellent conduction band alignment with the water reduction potential, InP is an ideal photocathode material for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water reduction. Here, we develop facile self-assembled Au nanodots based on dewetting phenomena as a masking technique to fabricate wafer-scale InP nanowires (NWs) via a top-down approach. In addition, we report dual-function wet treatment using sulfur-dissolved oleylamine (S-OA) to remove a plasma-damaged surface in a controlled manner and stabilize InP NWs against surface corrosion in harsh electrolyte solutions. The resulting InP NW photocathodes exhibit an excellent photocurrent density of 33 mA/cm2 under 1 sun illumination in 1 M HCl with a highly stabilized performance without needing additional protection layers. Our approach combining large-area NW fabrication and surface engineering synergistically enhances light harvesting and PEC performance and stability, thereby providing a pathway for the development of efficient and durable InP photoelectrodes in a scalable manner.

RESUMO

Photoelectrochemical reduction of CO2 is a promising approach for renewable fuel production. We herein report a novel strategy for preparation of hybrid photocathodes by immobilizing molecular cobalt catalysts on TiO2 -protected n+ -p Si electrodes (Si|TiO2 ) coated with multiwalled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) by π-π stacking. Upon loading a composite of CoII (BrqPy) (BrqPy=4',4''-bis(4-bromophenyl)-2,2' : 6',2'' : 6'',2'''-quaterpyridine) catalyst and CNT on Si|TiO2 , a stable 1-Sun photocurrent density of -1.5 mA cm-2 was sustained over 2 h in a neutral aqueous solution with unity Faradaic efficiency and selectivity for CO production at a bias of zero overpotential (-0.11 V vs. RHE), associated with a turnover frequency (TOFCO ) of 2.7 s-1 . Extending the photoelectrocatalysis to 10 h, a remarkable turnover number (TONCO ) of 57000 was obtained. The high performance shown here is substantially improved from the previously reported photocathodes relying on covalently anchored catalysts.

RESUMO

As a new path to "green" ammonia production, photoelectrochemical nitrate reduction reaction (PEC NO3 RR) is investigated for the first time. An Au-decorated ordered silicon nanowire (O_SiNW) array photocathode demonstrates 95.6 % of Faradaic efficiency (FE) to ammonia at 0.2 VRHE , which represents a more positive potential than the thermodynamic reduction potential of nitrate by utilizing photovoltage. The high FE is possible because both Si and Au surfaces are inactive for competing water reduction to hydrogen. The O_SiNW array structure is favorable to promote the PEC NO3 RR relative to planar Si or randomly-grown Si nanowire, by enabling the uniform distribution of small Au nanoparticles as an electrocatalyst and facilitating the mass transport during the reaction. The results demonstrate the feasibility of PEC nitrate conversion to ammonia and would motivate further studies and developments.

RESUMO

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted increasing interest for broad applications in catalysis and gas separation due to their high porosity. However, the insulating feature and the limited active sites hindered MOFs as photocathode active materials for application in photoelectrocatalytic hydrogen generation. Herein, we develop a layered conductive two-dimensional conjugated MOF (2D c-MOF) comprising sp-carbon active sites based on arylene-ethynylene macrocycle ligand via CuO4 linking, named as Cu3 HHAE2 . This sp-carbon 2D c-MOF displays apparent semiconducting behavior and broad light absorption till the near-infrared band (1600 nm). Due to the abundant acetylene units, the Cu3 HHAE2 could act as the first case of MOF photocathode for photoelectrochemical (PEC) hydrogen generation and presents a record hydrogen-evolution photocurrent density of ≈260 µA cm-2 at 0 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode among the structurally-defined cocatalyst-free organic photocathodes.

RESUMO

The photoelectrochemical response of a photocathode made from a colloidal solution of boron (B) and phosphorus (P) codoped silicon (Si) quantum dots (QDs) 2-11 nm in diameters is studied. Since codoped Si QDs are dispersible in alcohol and water due to the hydrophilic surface, a photoelectrode with a smooth surface is produced by drop-coating the QD solution on an indium tin oxide substrate. The codoping provides high oxidation resistance to Si QDs and makes the electrode operate as a photocathode. The photoelectrochemical response of a Si QD photoelectrode depends strongly on the size of QDs; there is a transition from anodic to cathodic photocurrent around 4 nm in diameter. Below the size, anodic photocurrent due to self-oxidation of Si QDs is observed, while above the size, cathodic photocurrent due to electron transfer across the interface is observed. The cathodic photocurrent increases with increasing the size, and in some samples, it is observed for more than 3000 s under intermittent light irradiation.

RESUMO

The design and development of a 3D hierarchical CdS/NiO heterojunction and its application in a self-powered cathodic photoelectrochemical (PEC) bioanalysis is introduced. Specifically, NiO nanoflakes (NFs) were in situ formed on carbon fibers via a facile liquid-phase deposition method followed by an annealing step and subsequent integration with CdS quantum dots (QDs). The glucose oxidase (GOx) was then coated on the photocathode to allow the determination of glucose. Under 5 W 410 nm LED light and at a working voltage of 0.0 V (vs. Ag/AgCl), this method can assay glucose concentrations down to 1.77×10-9 M. The linear range was 5×10-7 M to 1×10-3 M, and the relative standard deviation (RSD) was below 5%. The photocathodic biosensor achieved target detection with high sensitivity and selectivity. This work is expected to stimulate more passion in the development of innovative hierarchical heterostructures for advanced self-powered photocathodic bioanalysis. Design of 3D hierarchical CdS/NiO heterojunction and its application in a self-powered cathodic photoelectrochemical (PEC) bioanalysis.
