BACKGROUND: Nelore cattle play a key role in tropical production systems due to their resilience to harsh conditions, such as heat stress and seasonally poor nutrition. Monitoring their genetic diversity is essential to manage the negative impacts of inbreeding. Traditionally, inbreeding and inbreeding depression are assessed by pedigree-based coefficients (F), but recently, genetic markers have been preferred for their precision in capturing the inbreeding level and identifying animals at risk of reduced productive and reproductive performance. Hence, we compared the inbreeding and inbreeding depression for productive and reproductive performance traits in Nelore cattle using different inbreeding coefficient estimation methods from pedigree information (FPed), the genomic relationship matrix (FGRM), runs of homozygosity (FROH) of different lengths (> 1 Mb (genome), between 1 and 2 Mb - FROH 1-2; 2-4 Mb FROH 2-4 or > 8 Mb FROH >8) and excess homozygosity (FSNP). RESULTS: The correlation between FPed and FROH was lower when the latter was based on shorter segments (r = 0.15 with FROH 1-2, r = 0.20 with FROH 2-4 and r = 0.28 with FROH 4-8). Meanwhile, the FPed had a moderate correlation with FSNP (r = 0.47) and high correlation with FROH >8 (r = 0.58) and FROH-genome (r = 0.60). The FROH-genome was highly correlated with inbreeding based on FROH>8 (r = 0.93) and FSNP (r = 0.88). The FGRM exhibited a high correlation with FROH-genome (r = 0.55) and FROH >8 (r = 0.51) and a lower correlation with other inbreeding estimators varying from 0.30 for FROH 2-4 to 0.37 for FROH 1-2. Increased levels of inbreeding had a negative impact on the productive and reproductive performance of Nelore cattle. The unfavorable inbreeding effect on productive and reproductive traits ranged from 0.12 to 0.51 for FPed, 0.19-0.59 for FGRM, 0.21-0.58 for FROH-genome, and 0.19-0.54 for FSNP per 1% of inbreeding scaled on the percentage of the mean. When scaling the linear regression coefficients on the standard deviation, the unfavorable inbreeding effect varied from 0.43 to 1.56% for FPed, 0.49-1.97% for FGRM, 0.34-2.2% for FROH-genome, and 0.50-1.62% for FSNP per 1% of inbreeding. The impact of the homozygous segments on reproductive and performance traits varied based on the chromosomes. This shows that specific homozygous chromosome segments can be signs of positive selection due to their beneficial effects on the traits. CONCLUSIONS: The low correlation observed between FPed and genomic-based inbreeding estimates suggests that the presence of animals with one unknown parent (sire or dam) in the pedigree does not account for ancient inbreeding. The ROH hotspots surround genes related to reproduction, growth, meat quality, and adaptation to environmental stress. Inbreeding depression has adverse effects on productive and reproductive traits in Nelore cattle, particularly on age at puberty in young bulls and heifer calving at 30 months, as well as on scrotal circumference and body weight when scaled on the standard deviation of the trait.

A total of 300 laying Japanese quails (230.10 ± 20 g body weight) divided into four groups (15 birds in 5 replicates/group) were used to examine the impacts of dietary sodium humate (SH) supplementation at levels of 0% (control diet), 0.2%, 0.4% and 0.6% on egg variables and physiological merits of laying quails for 10 weeks under heat stress conditions (15 June and 23 August 2021). Results showed 0.4% SH increased (p < 0.05) weight (12.27 vs. 11.91 g), production (79.84% vs. 69.20%), mass (597.13 vs. 510.48 g) and brokenness (2.8% vs. 5.4%) of eggs as compared to control. Egg shape, shell thickness, shell strength and cholesterol content as well as feed conversion ratio were higher (80.2, 295.8 µm, 1.468 kg/cm,2 11.08 mg/g and 2.69, p < 0.05) in 0.4% SH than in control group (75.2, 279.0 µm, 1.304 kg/cm,2  14.94 mg/g and 2.76). Feed intake, percentages of eggs' shells, yolk, albumen and serum biochemistry (total protein, albumin, AST and HDL) were not altered with the dietary SH. Birds fed on SH diets showed higher levels of globulin, calcium and phosphorus, as well as lower contents of albumin/globulin ratio, triglycerides, cholesterol, corticosterone compared with the control. Regression analysis of antioxidants expected higher total antioxidant capacity (TAC), superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase at 0.35%, and glutathione at 0.40% SH, while the lowest concentration of malondialdehyde was computed at 0.45%. Similarly, immunoglobulins (IgG and IgM) maximum values were determined at 0.35% and 0.40% levels. Moreover, the concentration of tumour necrosis factor-alpha increased (p < 0.05) in all SH levels as compared to the control group. It is conceivable to conclude that the dietary implementation of SH at a level of 0.4% improved egg variables and well-being aspects of laying quail exposed to heat stress conditions.

In the textile industry, complex cocoon traits are closely related to silk production. The aim of the present study was to estimate genetic parameters of economic importance traits-cocoon length (CL), cocoon weight (CW) and shell weight (SW)-in three B. mori lines-Chinese (C6), Japanese (J7) and Indian (C. Nichi)-reared under different temperature and photoperiod conditions. For each of these lines, data were collected from several generations with a full-sibling family structure and variance-covariance component were obtained via restricted maximum likelihood (REML) estimates based on a bi-trait animal model analysed through the multiple-trait derivative-free restricted maximum likelihood (MTDFREML) software. Genetic parameters of the traits varied between the silkworm lines were evaluated. Heritabilities were highest in J7 line (0.71, 0.89 and 0.93 for CL, CW and SW, respectively) followed by C6 (0.48, 0.54 and 0.50 for CL, CW and SW, respectively) and C. Nichi (0.36, 0.43 and 0.40 for CL, CW and SW, respectively). Phenotypic correlations among these lines were positive, with values ranging between 0.36 and 0.767. Similarly, genetic correlations between the analysed silkworm lines were observed to be positive, with high values ranging from 0.86 to 0.94. The evidence for environmental correlation in these lines was found only between CW-SW traits with moderate to high values ranging from 0.600 to 0.940. The magnitude of heritability and genetic correlations implies that phenotypic variations of the CL, CW and SW traits depend mainly on genotypic variation within the J7, C6 and C. Nichi lines, and that simultaneous genetic gains are possible by implementing selection processes for any of the evaluated traits.

Estimates of variance components are needed for implementing genetic selection. This study was conducted to genetic parameters for production and reproductive traits on Indian Karan-Fries cattle using multi-trait repeatability animal model. Data collected from ICAR-National Dairy Research Institute, Karnal, India (from 1988 to 2019) were used. Single-trait and multi-trait repeatability animal models were used for parameter estimation. The posterior mean of Heritability estimates for 305-day milk yield (305-DMY), lactation milk yield (LMY), lactation length (LL) were 0.20 ± 0.03, 0.19 ± 0.03 and 0.06 ± 0.02, respectively. For age at first calving (AFC), calving interval (CI), and days open (DO), the posterior mean of heritability estimates were 0.24 ± 0.08, 0.06 ± 0.01, and 0.07 ± 0.02, respectively. The repeatability estimates for 305-DMY, LMY, LL, CI, and DO were 0.37 ± 0.02, 0.34 ± 0.02, 0.15 ± 0.02, 0.09 ± 0.02, and 0.12 ± 0.02, respectively. Genetic correlation between milk production traits (305-DMY, LMY, and LL) was positive and strong (> 0.80). However, the genetic correlation between milk production trait and AFC ranges from - 0.31 to 0.12. Unfavorable strong genetic correlations were observed between production and reproductive traits (CI and DO) with values ranged from 0.5 to 0.7. Phenotypic correlations among 305-DMY, LMY, and LL were generally positive and high. The moderate heritability estimates and potential genetic variation for 305-DMY, TMY, and AFC suggested that genetic gain can be obtained for these traits through genetic selection. Low heritability estimates found for LL, CI and DO, indicating that the possibility of changing these traits through genetic selection is small. High genetic correlation observed between productive and fertility traits were unfavorable. The existed strong genetic and phenotypic correlation estimates between CI and DO indicates that recording only one of them would be sufficient in the herd. As the multi-trait model showed slight improvements in the h2 as well as r estimates for both productive and reproductive traits over univariate analysis, future selection with a multi-trait animal model applying Bayesian approach would be recommended.

Bee pollen (BP) is one of the most useful therapeutic products favoured by natural medicine scientists because of its possible nutritional and medical applications. It exhibits many impacts such as antimicrobial, immunostimulating, antioxidants and hepatoprotective. Furthermore, BP has some useful therapeutic features in numerous pathological situations such as its impact to normalize wound healing. Based on previous literatures, the level of BP supplement in livestock and poultry ranged from 0.1 to 20 g/kg diet. This variation depends on the species, physiological status, age and purpose of addition; so far generally, it accepted to use the level with no side effects. It has been observed that BP enhanced growth performance, immunity responses and blood variables and had hypoglycaemic activity by reducing the lipid in the blood and carcass. Also, BP contains more nutrients, which stimulate faster differentiation and proliferation of the cells of immune system of birds. Therefore, the present review recommends that BP supplementation (up to 20 g/kg diet) had possible beneficial impacts, antioxidants and protective activities on most of the production, productive and health patterns of livestock.

A genomewide association study was carried out on a sample of Marchigiana breed cattle to detect markers significantly associated with carcass and meat traits. Four hundred and nine young bulls from 117 commercial herds were genotyped by Illumina 50K BeadChip assay. Eight growth and carcass traits (average daily gain, carcass weight, dressing percentage, body weight, skin weight, shank circumference, head weight and carcass conformation) and two meat quality traits (pH at slaughter and pH 24 h after slaughter) were measured. Data were analysed with a linear mixed model that included fixed effects of herd, slaughter date, fixed covariables of age at slaughter and SNP genotype, and random effects of herd and animal. A permutation test was performed to correct SNP genotype significance level for multiple testing. A total of 96 SNPs were significantly associated at genomewide level with one or more of the considered traits. Gene search was performed on genomic regions identified on the basis of significant SNP position and level of linkage disequilibrium. Interesting loci affecting lipid metabolism (SOAT1), bone (BMP4) and muscle (MYOF) biology were highlighted. These results may be useful to better understand the genetic architecture of growth and body composition in cattle.

The study aimed to estimate the genetic parameters of different reproductive traits namely age at first calving (AFC), calving interval (CI), days open (DO) and number of service per conception (NSPC) and their associations with productive traits including 305-day milk yield (305DMY), total lactation milk yield (TLMY) and lactation length (LL) of Jersey crossbred cattle maintained at Kalyani, Nadia, West Bengal, India. Genetic parameters of reproductive traits and their correlations with productive traits were estimated by Restricted Maximum Likelihood method and Bayesian approach. Using both analytical approaches, the estimates of heritability for AFC, CI, DO and NSPC ranged from 0.12 -0.15, 0.05-0.08, 0.08-0.09 and 0.04-0.06, respectively. Low proportion of variances associated with permanent environmental effect of animals (c2 effect) were detected for CI (0.08-0.10), DO (0.09-0.11) and NSPC (0.05-0.06) in both the methods. Repeatability measures for all the reproductive traits considered in this study were low to moderate in nature, which ranged from 0.09 to 0.17. Genetic correlations between different reproductive traits were positive and low (0.05) to high (0.98) in magnitude except AFC-NSPC. Low and negative genetic correlations of AFC with 305DMY and TLMY were favourable and indicated animals with high milk yield had early age of maturity. Positive genetic correlations between CI, DO and NSPC with all production traits implied the antagonism relationships among these traits, therefore in any breeding program for improvement of production traits via selection, the reproductive traits should be taken into account as well.

Genome-wide association studies (GWASs) are used to identify quantitative trait loci for phenotypic traits of interest. The use of multilocus mixed models allows to correct for population stratification and account for long-range linkage disequilibrium. In this study, GWASs were conducted to identify the genetic bases of milk production (milk yield, protein and fat composition, and yield) in two autochthonous dual-purpose cattle breeds from the Aosta Valley. Using either the breeding values or the deregressed proofs, common significative single nucleotide polymorphisms have been identified for milk yield, protein percentage, and fat percentage. Two major quantitative trait loci regions have been identified on the chromosomes 5 and 14 for the fat percentage, harbouring the MGST1, CYHR1, VPS28, and CPSF1 genes. For the protein percentage, a candidate region has been identified on BTA 6; in this region, the CSN1S1, CSN2, HSTN, CSN3, and RUFY3 genes are annotated. Most of the identified genes have already been associated with milk composition in other studies on cosmopolitan and local cattle. These results show that the genes involved in milk composition quantitative traits in the Aosta cattle are common also in other cattle breeds and they can be further investigated with the use of whole genome sequencing data.

Hatchery performance is often evaluated based on descriptors such as hatchability, 7-d mortality, and cost. In addition to these descriptors, it is useful to include in this analysis aspects of chick quality through post-hatch performance. Realizing the bird's complete genetic potential necessitates meeting various criteria, with effective support for the chick's immune system being among the pivotal factors. To be effective, in ovo vaccination systems must deliver the vaccines to specific sites in the egg, a circumstance that directly depends on when the injection is made. We examined production data to evaluate the impact of in ovo vaccination time on performance parameters of male Ross308AP chicks. A comprehensive survey was conducted examining records from 3,722 broiler flocks produced and raised by the same company under standard nutrition and management conditions. The selected data specifically pertained to flocks that underwent slaughter between 41 and 45 d. In our analysis, 4 different linear models were built, one for each response variable: mean weight (MW), body weight gain (BWG), corrected feeding conversion rate (cFCR), and total mortality (TM). The linear models used in the analyses included as main predictor the timing of in ovo vaccination (440, 444, 448, 452, 456, 458, and 460 h of incubation), and as additional predictors: age of the breeding flock (26-35, 36-55 and 56-66 wks old), slaughter age, identity of the hatchery, and the season at which the data was collected. Our results showed that the timing of in ovo vaccination significantly affected BWG and cFCR, with procedures performed at 460 h of incubation showing the best outcomes. Breeding flock age affected all response variables, with older breeding flocks delivering increased MW, BWG and TM, and middle-aged flocks increased cFCR. Increasing slaughter age reduced BWG while MW, cFCR and TM were all increased. These data emphasize the benefits of performing in ovo vaccination as close as possible to 460 h of incubation to extract the best BWG and cFCR from Ross308AP male broiler.

OBJECTIVE: The objective is to identify genomic regions and candidate genes associated with age to 105 kg (AGE), average daily gain (ADG), backfat thickness (BF), and eye muscle area (EMA) in Yorkshire pig. METHODS: This study used a total of 104,380 records and 11,854 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) data obtained from Illumina porcine 60K chip. The estimated genomic breeding values (GEBVs) and SNP effects were estimated by single-step genomic best linear unbiased prediction (ssGBLUP). RESULTS: The heritabilities of AGE, ADG, BF, and EMA were 0.50, 0.49, 0.49, and 0.23, respectively. We identified significant SNP markers surpassing the Bonferroni correction threshold (1.68×10-6), with a total of 9 markers associated with both AGE and ADG, and 4 markers associated with BF and EMA. Genome-wide association study (GWAS) analyses revealed notable chromosomal regions linked to AGE and ADG on Sus scrofa chromosome (SSC) 1, 6, 8, and 16; BF on SSC 2, 5, and 8; and EMA on SSC 1. Additionally, we observed strong linkage disequilibrium on SSC 1. Finally, we performed enrichment analyses using gene ontology and Kyoto encyclopedia of genes and genomes (KEGG), which revealed significant enrichments in eight biological processes, one cellular component, one molecular function, and one KEGG pathway. CONCLUSION: The identified SNP markers for productive traits are expected to provide valuable information for genetic improvement as an understanding of their expression.

The objective of this study was to identify genomic regions and candidate genes associated with productive traits using a total of 37,099 productive records and 6,683 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) data obtained from five Great-Grand-Parents (GGP) farms in Landrace. The estimated of heritabilities for days to 105 kg (AGE), average daily gain (ADG), backfat thickness (BF), and eye muscle area (EMA) were 0.49, 0.49, 0.56, and 0.23, respectively. We identified a genetic window that explained 2.05%-2.34% for each trait of the total genetic variance. We observed a clear partitioning of the four traits into two groups, and the most significant genomic region for AGE and ADG were located on the Sus scrofa chromosome (SSC) 1, while BF and EMA were located on SSC 2. We conducted Gene ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG), which revealed results in three biological processes, four cellular component, three molecular function, and six KEGG pathway. Significant SNPs can be used as markers for quantitative trait loci (QTL) investigation and genomic selection (GS) for productive traits in Landrace pig.

This study aimed to estimate the heterosis for productive traits in a two-way crossbreeding scheme. Four guinea pig lines were originally selected for the following traits: line P1 for the growth rate, P2 for the partial feed conversion rate, M1 for the growth rate of the litter at 10 days of age, and M2 for the litter size at birth. The comparison included 176 purebreds (P1: 46, P2: 43, M1: 54 and M2: 33) and 150 crosses (P1P2: 42, P2P1: 38, M1M2: 11 and M2M1: 59); body weights at birth, 10 days, weaning and 60 days of age were analyzed. A linear fixed-effect model was used, and heterosis was estimated as the difference between the average performance of the crossbred and pure-line animals. The pure line comparisons showed that P2 was lower than P1 for weight at 10 days and weaning weight, while all other comparisons between the paternal and maternal pure lines were not significant. The results indicated significant positive heterosis effects for both types of crosses, but only for birth weight: 3.7% for paternal crosses and 12.7% for maternal crosses. The heterosis estimates were mostly positive but not significant for all other traits. A reason for the low levels of heterosis could be that the lines are not very genetically differentiated. These results suggest that applying a two-way crossbreeding scheme within paternal and maternal guinea pig lines for meat production is not recommended due to the absence of heterosis for growth traits.

This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the embryonic injection of silver nanoparticles (SilNPs) on some productive traits and hepatic gene expression of lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-challenged broilers after a 42 d rearing period. 560 fertile eggs were randomly allocated to four groups and received either of the following treatments at d 7 of incubation, control (no injection), placebo (1 mL saline), SilNP20 (20 mg/kg silver nanoparticles), or SilNP40 (40 mg/kg silver nanoparticles). After the incubation, 320 hatchlings experienced a 42 d standard rearing period. Live body weight (LBW), feed intake (FI), and feed conversion ratio (FCR) were weekly recorded. At the end of the experiment, two birds from each replicate (n = 8 per treatment) were exposed to LPS intraperitoneal injection at 48, 24, and 12 h before slaughter time. They were also used for blood, intestinal, and microbial evaluations. The hepatic mRNA levels of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), interleukin 6 (IL-6), transforming growth factor beta (TGF-ß), and insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) were assessed at d 1 and 42 of the experiment. Adminstration of SiLNPs improved LBW, FI, and FCR and also enhanced liver and spleen weights (P < 0.05). SilNP20 birds had significantly lower bursa of Fabricius weight (P < 0.05). SilNP20 had lower total cholesterol levels than others. There was a significant difference (P < 0.05) between SliNP40 and SilNP20 in the ratio of villus height to crypt width. Compared to control groups, chicks of SilNP20, but not SilNP40, showed a significant increase in the relative expression of TNF-α, IL-6, TGF-ß, and IFG-I genes at d 1. On d 42, however, both SilNP20 and SilNP40 had significantly higher TNF-α and TGF-ß levels than both controls. Silver nanoparticles did not significantly affect the microflora of the ileum and cecum in the current study. In summary, SilNPs administration to chick embryos showed a long-term positive effect on their productive performance.

Given the significant evolution in the global food consumption pattern, animal protein needs have increased. This pattern has been leading to intensified efforts to develop the poultry industry that adopts scientific methods and advanced technologies since poultry meat is an important source of animal protein. Therefore, this study aimed to use different levels of therapeutic Curcuma in the diets provided to broilers and its role in production traits. This study was conducted at the University of Baghdad / College of Agricultural Engineering Sciences. This experiment used 315 unsexed Ross 308 chicks one day old. The chicks were randomly distributed into seven treatments, with three replicates per treatment, at a rate of 15 chicks for each replicate. The treatments were T1, which represents the control treatment without any addition, and T2 added 0.3% of Therapeutic Curcuma powder, while T3 added 0.6% of Therapeutic Curcuma powder). Moreover, T4 represents adding 0.9% of Therapeutic Curcuma powder, and T5 includes adding 1.2% of Therapeutic Curcuma powder. Finally, T6 was characterized by adding 1.5% of Therapeutic Curcuma powder, while T7 added 1.8% of Therapeutic Curcuma powder. The effect of using Therapeutic Curcuma powder in the above treatments showed that the use of Therapeutic Curcumapowder in broiler diets significantly increased (P<0.05) in the productive traits represented by body weight, weight gain, feed consumption, and feed conversion ratio. Moreover, it is possible to use Therapeutic Curcuma powder with a percentage of 0.9%, which improves the production traits.

In this study, we aimed to evaluate the effects of different proportions of red corn rich in anthocyanins on the diet of fattening lambs considering their productive traits, blood metabolic profile, and antioxidative status. The research was carried out with 30 Merinolandschaf lambs, 90 days old and weaned. The feed mixture for lambs (n = 10) of the control group contained yellow corn, while in the feed mixture of experimental group I (n = 10), yellow corn was replaced with red corn at 50% (RC50), and in experimental group II (n = 10), yellow corn was 100% replaced with red corn (RC100). An automatic three-part differential haematology analyser was used to determine haematological parameters in whole blood, and biochemical parameters were determined in blood serum using a biochemical analyser. A diet containing red corn did not affect productive traits or the majority of the examined parameters. However, higher blood haemoglobin content, increased aspartate aminotransferase and creatine kinase activity, and decreased glucose and non-esterified fatty acids concentrations were found in the serum of RC100 lambs. These results indicate a positive effect of red corn rich in anthocyanins on the metabolic profile without any changes in the productive traits of lambs.

Cotton productivity under water-stressed conditions is controlled by multiple quantitative trait loci (QTL). Enhancement of these productivity traits under water deficit stress is crucial for the genetic improvement of upland cotton, Gossypium hirsutum. In the present study, we constructed a genetic map with 504 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) covering a total span length of 4,416 cM with an average inter-marker distance of 8.76 cM. A total of 181 intra-specific recombinant inbred lines (RILs) were derived from a cross between G. hirsutum var. MCU5 and TCH1218 were used. Although 2,457 polymorphic SNPs were detected between the parents using the CottonSNP50K assay, only 504 SNPs were found to be useful for the construction of the genetic map. In the SNP genotyping, a large number of SNPs showed either >20% missing data, duplication, or segregation distortion. However, the mapped SNPs of this study showed collinearity with the physical map of the reference genome (G. hirsutum var.TM-1), indicating that there was no chromosomal rearrangement within the studied mapping population. RILs were evaluated under multi-environments and seasons for which the phenotypic data were acquired. A total of 53 QTL controlling plant height (PH), number of sympodial branches, boll number (BN), and boll weight (BW) were dissected by QTL analysis under irrigated and water stress conditions. Additionally, it was found that nine QTL hot spots not only co-localized for more than one investigated trait but were also stable with major QTL, i.e., with > 10% of phenotypic variation. One QTL hotspot on chromosome 22 flanked by AX-182254626-AX-182264770 with a span length of 89.4 cM co-localized with seven major and stable QTL linked to a number of sympodial branches both under irrigated and water stress conditions. In addition, putative candidate genes associated with water stress in the QTL hotspots were identified. Besides, few QTL from the hotspots were previously reported across various genetic architects in cotton validating the potential applications of these identified QTL for cotton breeding and improvement. Thus, the major and stable QTL identified in the present study would improve the cotton productivity under water-limited environments through marker-assisted selection.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to estimate the heritability (h 2), repeatability (r), and correlations (ryiyi ) in some traits of zootechnical interest in a population of New Zealand white rabbits of a tropical dry forest area. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three mating groups were formed, each one of 1 male and 70 females. The traits evaluated were litter size at birth (LB), born alive (BA), born dead (BD), litter weight born alive (LW), litter weight at weaning (LWW), weaning weight (WW), slaughter weight (SW), and carcass weight (CW). Weaning took place at 42 days, and the fattening phase lasted 60 ± 3 days. A descriptive statistical study was carried out on the study variables. Paternal heritability was estimated ( h f 2 ) and maternal ( h m 2 ), repeatability, rabbit index IC, and Pearson's correlations (ryiyi ) between traits. The descriptive statistics showed high variation for the BD traits. RESULTS: The values of the productivity found were similar to those presented in studies around the world. h 2 presented magnitudes between low and medium. h f 2 ranged between 0.09 and 0.42 and between 0.11 and 0.45 for h m 2 . In general, the values of h m 2 were higher than the values of h f 2 . The r values for the traits LB, BA, LW, LWW, and SW presented low magnitude, while it was medium for WW and CW. From the values of r, IC was calculated for each of the rabbits, allowing their categorization, which will be used in future selection plans. ryiyi among the variables ranged from -0.01 to 0.860. They were generally positive and mostly not significant (p > 0.05); they took a magnitude from low to moderate, except for the correlation between LB and BA. CONCLUSION: The production of rabbits under tropical conditions is similar to other reports. The genetic parameters evaluated were medium-to-low, indicating a robust non-additive gene and/or environmental effect.

Insect meals are good candidates to replace fishmeal as new protein sources in aquafeeds. This study evaluated the effects of fishmeal replacement with different dietary inclusion levels of a partially defatted Tenebrio molitor (L.) larva meal (TM) on rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss Walbaum) growth, diet digestibility, and hepatic intermediary metabolism. A 154-day growth trial was performed with 252 rainbow trout (78.3 ± 6.24 g) randomly divided into twelve tanks and fed four experimental diets containing increasing levels of TM: 0% (TM0), 25% (TM25), 50% (TM50), and 100% (TM100) of fishmeal substitution, corresponding to TM dietary inclusion levels of 0%, 5%, 10%, and 20%, respectively. A digestibility trial was performed feeding 180 rainbow trout (94.6 ± 7.31 g) with the experimental diets used in the growth trial. The growth parameters were not affected by TM dietary inclusion. Regarding the evaluated apparent digestibility coefficients (ADC), only the ADC of crude protein was affected, showing the following trend: TM0 = TM25 > TM50 > TM100. The activities of key hepatic amino acid catabolic and lipogenic enzymes were not affected by the dietary composition. The results suggest that a partially defatted TM could totally replace fishmeal in commercial rainbow trout diets without negative effects on fish performance.

The Sicilian black pig (SB) (Nero Siciliano), also known as the Nero dei Nebrodi, Nero delle Madonie, or Nero dell'Etna pig ecotype, is an autochthonous Italian breed. The origins of this breed date back to Greek and Carthaginian dominations. In ancient times, its breeding was fairly common throughout Sicily, registering only a temporary reduction during the Arab domination. This breed is known primarily for its distinctive black coat, although some individuals display wattles and a partially or wholly white face. The SB pig has a birth rate with an average per sow of 7.6 piglets, each of 1.4 kg live body weight, showing an average daily gain (ADG) of 346 g/day during the fattening period. Slaughter generally takes place at an average age of 390 days, with an average live weight of 95 kg. This breed also appears to withstand adverse climatic conditions and resist disease. The purpose of this manuscript is to offer a general overview regarding the Sicilian Black pig and to consider the recent findings related to genome investigation. The recent application of Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) technologies in the study of the genome of autochthonous breeds showed that polymorphisms of some candidate genes for production performance and phenotypic traits represent important information for selection processes. The protection of autochthonous breeds, intended as sources of genomic diversity for the further improvements of pigs for commercial use, constitutes a valuable opportunity to create new sustainable pig chains.

The influence of subcutaneous injections of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) on rabbit performance, hematological and biochemical parameters of blood, antioxidant status, and the residues of silver in meat and blood in two breeds (New Zealand White (NZW) and Jabali) of rabbits growing under high ambient temperature was evaluated. A total of 90 six-week-old rabbits (45 NZW and 45 Jabali) were randomly distributed into three equal treatment groups (control, 0.5 mg, and 1.0 mg AgNPs/kg body weight). The treated rabbits were injected twice a week for four consecutive weeks. The results revealed that AgNPs administration had no significant effect on average daily gain (ADG), feed intake, and feed conversion ratio (FCR). The NZW breed surpassed the Jabali breed in growth performance traits, carcass weight, dressing percentage, and cuts of mid parts and hind cuts. Administration of AgNPs had a significant effect on hematocrit (HCT) and platelet (PLT) values. Rabbits injected with AgNPs at a dose of 0.5 mg showed a lower plasma concentration of total cholesterol and triglycerides than that of control rabbits. The NZW breed had significantly low platelet, total cholesterol, and triglyceride values. Rabbits injected with 0.5 mg/kg BW had the lowest total antioxidant capacity and highest malondialdehyde (MDA) and glutathione peroxidase. The Ag residues were higher in blood than those in meat in treated rabbits. The local breed (Jabali) had significantly lower residues than the imported one (NZW) either in meat or in blood. However, the amount of accumulated silver in blood plasma and meat increased with increasing dose.
