The ability of a species to withstand human impact depends on its life history characteristics, including social, ranging, and reproductive activity. The genera Lagothrix and Cacajao are more susceptible to anthropic action than small-sized primates due to their slower life histories, more restricted geographical ranges, and lower population densities. This narrative literature review aimed to gather scientific information available from the last 60 years on the reproductive biology of females of the genera Lagothrix and Cacajao. Most studies on the genus Lagothrix, mainly focused on L. lagothricha and L. l. poeppigii, present important advances on reproductive strategies, reproductive productivity, functional morphology and physiology, including seasonality, sexual cycle, gestation and fetal development in captive and free-living populations. Contrary, there is much less known about the reproductive biology of the genus Cacajao, with studies on free-living C. calvus and C. melanocephalus highlighting reproductive behavior, and basic description of the sexual cycle, gestation, and lactation. Unfortunately, the morphology of the female genital organs is only described in C. calvus, and there is still scarce information about the menstrual activity and the placenta. This literature review encourages primatologists, morphophysiologists, reproductive specialists, and ecologists to conduct comprehensive studies of these species to better understand the gaps in knowledge about reproduction, their relationship with their environment, including climatic and social variables. Understanding the integrative reproductive biology of these species will be a clue for improving the assessment of the resilience capacity of free-living populations and, consequently, establishing more appropriate management programs, and for the development of ex situ management techniques for the conservation of the species.

Batch spawner fishes develop successive clutches of oocytes which allows them to participate in many reproductive cycles during their adult life (iteroparous) and spawn in multiple events within each breeding cycle. Here, ovarian follicular development was morpho-functionally analyzed in females of the iteroparous batch spawner fish Gymnocorymbus ternetzi. To obtain better insights into the reproductive morpho-physiology in batch spawners, the objective of this research was to analyze the dynamics of the follicular development, with its hormonal regulation between two active reproduction events. We found that over 16 days, follicles progressed asynchronously to chromatin nucleolus, Primary and Secondary growth stages of oogenesis with progressive secretion of 17ß-estradiol (E2). During the end of secondary growth, the increase in 17α,20ß-dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one (17,20ß-p) was measured relative to the maturation process of the ovarian follicles (e.g., nuclear migration and its rupture during the resumption of meiosis). Interestingly, an additional increase in E2 was observed after fish reproduction, probably related to the recruitment of new batch follicles for secondary growth. We also measured the high values of multiple condition factor post-reproduction measurements, reflecting more energy invested during the pre-reproductive process. We also quantified high concentrations of 17,20ß-p, probably related to the recruitment of a new batch of oogonia to meiosis, presumably secreted by post-ovulatory follicles, after fish reproduction. We finally found that fish without exposure to reproductive stimulus developed a regression phase at day 24, characterized by massive follicle atresia, that allow them to recycle energy and constitutive materials of the follicles invested during oogenesis for another reproductive cycle.

Anxiety disorders are the most prevalent mental illnesses worldwide, exhibit high heritability, and affect twice as many women as men. To evaluate potential interactions between genetic background and cycling ovarian hormones on sex differences in susceptibility to negative valence behaviors relevant to anxiety disorders, we assayed avoidance behavior and cued threat memory dynamics in gonadally-intact adult male and female mice across four common inbred mouse strains: C57Bl/6J, 129S1/SVlmJ, DBA/2J, and BALB/cJ. Independent of sex, C57Bl/6J mice exhibited low avoidance but high threat memory, 129S1/SvlmJ mice high avoidance and high threat memory, DBA/2J mice low avoidance and low threat memory, and BALB/cJ mice high avoidance but low threat memory. Within-strain comparisons revealed reduced avoidance behavior in the high hormone phase of the estrous cycle (proestrus) compared to all other estrous phases in all strains except DBA/2J, which did not exhibit cycle-dependent behavioral fluctuations. Robust and opposing sex differences in threat conditioning and extinction training were found in the C57Bl/6J and 129S1/SvlmJ lines, whereas no sex differences were observed in the DBA/2J or BALB/cJ lines. C57Bl/6J males exhibited enhanced acute threat memory, whereas 129S1/SvlmJ females exhibited enhanced sustained threat memory, compared to their sex-matched littermates. These effects were not mediated by estrous cycle stage or sex differences in active versus passive defensive behavioral responses. Our data demonstrate that core features of behavioral endophenotypes relevant to anxiety disorders, such as avoidance and threat memory, are genetically driven yet dissociable and can be influenced further by cycling ovarian hormones.

This systematic review (SR) was aimed at answering two questions: (1) how sex and ovarian hormones alter behavior associated with cocaine use; (2) which possible neurobiological mechanisms explain behavioral differences. Three different researchers conducted a search in PUBMED for all kinds of articles published between the years of 1991 to 2021 on the theme "reproductive cycle and cocaine", "estrous cycle and cocaine", "menstrual cycle and cocaine", "fluctuation of ovarian hormones and cocaine", "estrogen and cocaine" and "progesterone and cocaine". Sixty original studies were identified and subdivided into experimental rodent studies and clinical trials. Experimental studies were characterized by author/year, species/strain, sex/number, age/weight, dose/route/time of administration, hormonal assessment, or administration. Clinical trials were characterized by author/year, sex/number, age, exclusion criterion, dose/route of administration/time of cocaine, and hormonal assessment. Results gathered showed that rodent females develop increased consumption, seeking behavior, craving, relapse, locomotion, increases in stress and anxiety, among other behavioral alterations during peaks of estrogen. These observations are related to the direct effects played by ovarian hormones (in particularly estradiol), in dopamine, but also in serotonin neurons, and in brain regions such as the tegmental area, the nucleus accumbens, the hypothalamus, the amygdala and the prefrontal cortex. Increased sensitization to cocaine presented by high estradiol females was linked to the activation of a CBR1-mediated mechanism and GABA-A-dependent suppression of inhibitory synaptic activity of the prelimbic prefrontal cortex. Estradiol facilitation of cocaine-increased locomotion and self-administration was shown to require the release of glutamate and the activation of metabotropic glutamate receptors subtype 5. Clinical studies also tend to point to a stimulatory effect of estradiol on cocaine sensitization and a neuroprotective effect of progesterone. In conclusion, the results of the present review indicate a need for further preclinical and clinical trials and neurobiological studies to better understand the relationship between sex and ovarian hormones on cocaine sensitization.

Whether the growth zone found in the coronal plate of echinoids can be used as a chronometer to estimate the age of individuals is controversial. In spatangoid echinoids, it is not known whether the growth zone formation occurs annually. In this study, the growth zone formation process was examined in four spatangoid species from natural conditions. In Nacospatangus alta and Brissus agassizii, the formation of a dark zone indicates the maturity of the gonad and does not necessarily correspond to the age of the individual. In Lovenia elongata, dark growth zones were formed several times per year. Unlike in the other studied species, in Metalia spatagus, the light and dark growth zones appeared to be formed radially, rather than in a ring-like manner. These results may indicate that the frequency and mode of growth zone formation differ across species. As such, it is not appropriate to use the growth zone as a chronometer in spatangoid echinoids. If the growth zone is to be used as an indicator of age, more research is needed about the phase of forming the growth zone in each echinoid species.

KEY POINTS: Traditionally the female sex, compared with the male sex, has been perceived as having greater variability in many physiological traits, including within the immune system. We investigated effects of biological sex and the female reproductive cycle on numbers of circulating leukocytes in C57BL/6J mice. We show that biological sex, but not female reproductive cyclicity, has a significant effect on peripheral blood immune cell prevalence and variability, and that sex differences were not consistent amongst common inbred laboratory mouse strains. We found that male C57BL/6J mice, compared with female mice, have greater variability in peripheral blood immunophenotype, and that this was influenced by body weight. We created summary tables for researchers to facilitate experiment planning and sample size calculations for peripheral immune cells that consider the effects of biological sex. ABSTRACT: Immunophenotyping (i.e. quantifying the number and types of circulating leukocytes) is used to characterize immune changes during health and disease, and in response to pharmacological and other interventions. Despite the importance of biological sex in immune function, there is considerable uncertainty amongst researchers as to the extent to which biological sex or the female reproductive cycle influence blood immunophenotype. We quantified circulating leukocytes by multicolour flow cytometry in young C57BL/6J mice and assessed the effects of the reproductive cycle, biological sex, and other experimental and biological factors on data variability. We found that there are no significant effects of the female reproductive cycle on the prevalence of peripheral blood B cells, NK cells, CD4+ T cells, CD8+ T cells, monocytes, or neutrophils. Immunophenotype composition and variability do not significantly change between stages of the female reproductive cycle. There are, however, sex-specific differences in immune cell prevalence, with fewer monocytes, neutrophils, and NK cells in female mice. Surprisingly, immunophenotype is more variable in male mice, and weight is a significant contributing factor. We provide tools for researchers to perform a priori sample size calculations for two-group and factorial analyses. We show that immunophenotype varies between inbred mouse strains, and that using equal sample sizes of male and female mice is not always appropriate for within-sex evaluations of immune cell populations in peripheral blood.

Climate change might impact tree fecundity by altering the relative influences of meteorological and physiological drivers, and by modifying resource investment in reproduction. Using a 13-yr monitoring of Quercus ilex reproduction in a rainfall exclusion experiment, we analysed the interactive effects of long-term increased aridity and other environmental drivers on the inter-annual variation of fecundity (male flower biomass, number of initiated and mature fruits). Summer-autumn water stress was the main driver of fruit abortion during fruit growth. Rainfall exclusion treatment strongly reduced the number of initiated and mature fruits, even in masting years, and did not increase fruit tolerance to severe drought. Conversely, the relative contribution of the meteorological and physiological drivers, and the inter-annual variability of fruit production were not modified by rainfall exclusion. Rather than inducing an acclimation of tree fecundity to water limitation, increased aridity impacted it negatively through both lower fruit initiation due to changes in resource allocation, and more severe water and resource limitations during fruit growth. Long-term increased aridity affected tree reproduction beyond what is expected from the current response to inter-annual drought variations, suggesting that natural regeneration of holm oak forest could be jeopardised in the future.

Vitellogenesis in oviparous vertebrates is a critical marker of the restart of seasonal reproductive activity. During this process of multihormonal regulation, females allocate a considerable amount of organic and mineral reserves to the synthesis of yolk, with changes in their plasma values. In this work, we determined plasma levels of various metabolites and steroid hormones throughout the reproductive cycle in females of Salvator merianae who developed vitellogenic and non-vitellogenic follicular cycles. We worked for two consecutive years with 20 adult females from the Experimental Hatchery of the Facultad de Agronomía y Zootecnia of the Universidad Nacional de Tucumán. Values of metabolites: glucose, triglycerides, cholesterol, calcium, phosphorus, albumin, total proteins, and hormones: estradiol, progesterone, and testosterone, were determined during the following stages of the annual cycle: hibernation, hibernation emergence, courtship-mating, oviposition, and incubation. Vitellogenic females showed significantly higher plasma levels of triglycerides, calcium, phosphorus, and albumin than non-vitellogenic females, mainly in the courtship-mating stage (advanced vitellogenesis). In contrast, annual cholesterol averages were lower in vitellogenic females. Glucose showed changes throughout the annual cycle regardless of the vitellogenic condition. Total proteins plasma levels had very few fluctuations during the cycle. Among the hormones studied, only testosterone showed differences related to vitellogenic condition, with higher levels in non-vitellogenic females during the entire reproductive cycle. The knowledge of these changes associated with vitellogenesis will improve zootechnical management and will allow optimizing the reproductive efficiency of Salvator lizards in captivity.

The relationship between the reproductive (hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal; HPG) and adrenal (hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal; HPA) hormone axes is complex and can vary depending on the species and environmental factors affecting an individual. In an effort to understand this relationship in female veiled chameleons (Chamaeleo calyptratus), the patterns of fecal metabolites of corticosterone (C), estradiol (E), testosterone (T), and progesterone (P) were analyzed by enzyme immunoassay (EIA) during ovulatory (OC; eggs laid) and non-ovulatory cycles (NOC; no eggs laid). Glucocorticoid (GC) metabolites in the fecal extracts were characterized by HPLC and corticosterone EIA performance was assessed by parallelism, accuracy and precision tests. The results indicated that the assay chosen reliably measured the hormone metabolites present in the fecal extracts. Regular, cyclical hormone metabolite patterns consisting of an E peak followed by peaks of T, P and C in close succession were observed during both ovulatory and non-ovulatory cycles; relative levels of P and C, however, were higher during ovulatory cycles. Corticosterone metabolite levels, in particular, increased throughout vitellogenesis and peaked in late vitellogenesis (in non-ovulatory cycles) or around the time of ovulation, and remained elevated throughout the gravid period, falling just prior to oviposition. The results provide evidence of variation in glucocorticoid production throughout different stages of the reproductive cycle, including a role in the ovulatory process; the physiology, however, remains unclear.

Reproduction is regulated by multiple factors that influence physiology and behavior to ensure the continuity of species. However, more work is needed to examine the complex relationships between environmental factors and endocrine transducers that modulate reproductive cycles, particularly in lizards. Here, we aimed to characterize the variation in plasma sex steroid levels in different stages of the reproductive cycle in the lizard Sceloporus torquatus and assess whether sex steroid levels were related to environmental factors (temperature, photoperiod, precipitation, and relative humidity) and body condition. Plasma concentrations of estradiol (E2) and progesterone (P4) from blood samples were quantified by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and radioimmunoanalysis (RIA), respectively. Our results indicate that sex steroid concentrations were positively related to follicular development but negatively related to temperature and precipitation. E2 increased as the follicles grew, and its concentrations were highest in the preovulatory phase. P4 showed a similar pattern and persisted during pregnancy. Changes in body condition were non-significant and mainly unrelated to the reproductive stage and plasma sex steroids. Our findings indicate that sex steroids change depending on the season and reproductive stage. We observed high concentrations of E2 and P4 in the late vitellogenic and preovulatory stages, probably because of their role in promoting vitellogenesis and ovulation. Additionally, we observed that follicular development is correlated with temperature and photoperiod. To better understand the mechanisms underlying reproduction, future studies of captive populations where environmental factors can be manipulated are needed.

Some women are vulnerable to developing new onset obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) or having an exacerbation of pre-existing OCD during reproductive cycle events. Reports on the impact of the peripartum period on pre-existing OCD are inconsistent, with both worsening and improving symptom severity described. Studies have primarily been retrospective or have collected few data points, which limits the investigators' ability to capture the range of OCD symptoms during this time period, systematically and prospectively. The objective of this investigation was to add to the existing literature on the impact of the peripartum period on the course of pre-existing OCD. We conducted a secondary analysis of a subset data from the Brown Longitudinal Obsessive Compulsive Study, a prospective, observational study of OCD course. Nineteen women who experienced a pregnancy during the course of the study (9.5% of overall sample of women) were followed on average for 486 ± 133 weeks. Weekly psychiatric status ratings (PSRs) of OCD severity were compared between peripartum and non-peripartum periods. We found that the peripartum period did not significantly impact the course of OCD severity in the majority of women (N = 13, 69%). Of the minority of women with measurable variability in OCD symptoms, no statistically significant difference in PSR scores was observed between peripartum and non-peripartum periods. In this novel yet small dataset, the severity of OCD does not appear to worsen for most women during the peripartum period.

Fundamental knowledge on the regulation of reproduction by gonadotropins (Gths) is quite limited in viviparous fishes. In the present study, we performed molecular cloning and characterization of cDNAs encoding two Gth subunits (fshb and lhb) from the pituitaries of viviparous white-edged rockfish, Sebastes taczanowskii; expression profiles of both gene transcripts were elucidated in the pituitaries of reproductive males and females which were kept in a captive environment. The cloned fshb and lhb fragments exhibited high sequence identities with corresponding ß-subunit sequences from black rockfish, S. schlegelii. Notably, the fshb of white-edged rockfish appeared to lack a putative N-glycosylation site, whereas lhb conserved it. Expression of fshb and lhb transcripts in the rockfish pituitaries largely changed in synchrony but for minor exceptions. In males, levels of both transcripts increased with progression of spermatogenesis, although the peak for fshb (October) appeared slightly earlier than that for lhb (November). In females, both gene transcripts exhibited synchronous bimodal changes. High expression of fshb and lhb transcripts in the female pituitary during the gestation period, followed by the drastic decrease at parturition, suggest their possible involvement in regulation of gestation of this species. The knowledge gained for Sebastes in this study superimposes fundamental information necessary for further physiological understanding of viviparity in teleost fish.

In Latin America, Chagas disease has been mostly transmitted to humans by contact with the feces or urine of triatomine species infected with the protozoan Trypanosoma cruzi. There are currently 156 species in the subfamily Triatominae, distributed in 18 genera and five tribes. The prolixus group of the genus Rhodnius is composed of 11 species. Rhodnius marabaensis was the last species described and considered in this grouping of vectors. Knowledge about the biology, ecology, and behavior of these vectors is of great epidemiological importance, and in order to expand the knowledge of the biology of R. marabaensis, this paper describes the biological cycle and emergence rates of the species under laboratory conditions. The experiment was carried out at temperatures ranging from 15.5 to 29 °C (average of 24 °C) and humidity ranging from 51.4 to 72.2 (average of 63). For each of the fifteen couples, the egg emergence rate was calculated throughout the oviposition period. The oviposition period lasted from February to September, and the emergence rate varied between 13.9 and 53.3%. R. marabaensis presented an emergence rate of 46.7% and a total biological cycle of 193 days (the mean time required for emergence (25.1 days), 1st nymphal instar (19.4 days), 2nd nymphal instar (22.1 days), 3rd nymphal instar (26.2 days), 4th nymphal instar (29.3 days), and 5th nymphal instar (70.9 days)). Based on the biological cycle of R. marabaensis and 14 other Rhodnius species already described in the literature, it was also possible to calculate the averages for the groups prolixus, pictipes, and pallescens and, mainly, for the genus Rhodnius, contributing to the knowledge of this important group of Chagas disease vectors.

The aim of this study was to evaluate seasonal testicular development in the cultured sterlet, Acipenser ruthenus. During annual sexual cycle of male sterlet, stages of gonad maturity were examined using histology and ultrasonography approaches. The histology identified males at different stages of maturity among fish sampled monthly. According to the seasonal changes in the testes, reproductive cycle was divided into four stages including resting, pre-spawning, spawning, and post-spawning. The histology examination revealed considerable variation in testicular developmental stages. These changes were identified based on persistent spermatogenesis and asynchronous gonad development in testes, showing that regulation of annual gonadal cycle is influenced by season. Also, the results obtained using ultrasound suggested that reproductive stages can be identified based on morphology and tissue echogenicity. At each phase of testicular development, gonadosomatic index (GSI) and number of spermatogenic cysts were variable. The present study focused on determination of annual reproductive development in cultured male sterlet which clearly identifies reproductive stage in each season as valuable guide for future researches on reproductive biology of sterlet. This study presents basic knowledge about reproductive biology in sterlet contributing to optimal broodstocks management that allows comparison of reproductive development among sturgeon species.

This study uses questionnaire survey data to assess the viability of dairying among smallholders in southern Mozambique by diagnosing the feed, health, reproductive management practices, and cost performance of farmers who received Jersey cattle as part of a special dairy development program. The study also explores intensification strategies and their economic impact using whole-farm analysis, for which detailed information on all crop and dairy activities, and the feedstuffs being used, was gathered based on systematic farm-based record keeping, along with chemical analyses of feed samples. Results indicate that the smallholders increasingly discontinued milk production due to unsuccessful disease control and breeding. While short-term benefits were derived from low-cost dairy activities, the associated flaws in feeding, housing, and health care undermined cow fertility, productivity, reproductive performance, and survivability, which, in turn, precluded any long-term benefits. Our whole-farm analysis revealed that when the dairy herd is restructured and cropping patterns are optimized, the smallholders are able to meet household food demands and the nutritional requirements of the animals, continued lactation, and increased income. Farm-based milk processing can further upshift income levels. Along with upgraded feeding, housing, health, and marketing systems, appropriate breeding programs offer an enabling environment for dairy herd expansion and intensification to help smallholders secure food and enhance their economic well-being.

Creatine is an amino acid derivative synthesized from arginine, glycine and methionine. It serves as the substrate for the creatine kinase system, which is vital for maintaining ATP levels in tissues with high and fluctuating energy demand. There exists evidence that the creatine kinase system operates in both the endometrial and myometrial layers of the uterus. While use and regulation of this system in the uterus are not well understood, it is likely to be important given uterine tissues undergo phases of increased energy demand during certain stages of the female reproductive cycle, pregnancy, and parturition. This review discusses known adaptations of creatine metabolism in the uterus during the reproductive cycle (both estrous and menstrual), pregnancy and parturition, highlighting possible links to fertility and the existing knowledge gaps. Specifically, we discuss the adaptations and regulation of uterine creatine metabolite levels, cell creatine transport, de novo creatine synthesis, and creatine kinase expression in the various layers and cell types of the uterus. Finally, we discuss the effects of dietary creatine on uterine metabolism. In summary, there is growing evidence that creatine metabolism is up-regulated in uterine tissues during phases where energy demand is increased. While it remains unclear how important these adaptations are in the maintenance of healthy uterine function, furthering our understanding of uterine creatine metabolism may uncover strategies to combat poor embryo implantation and failure to conceive, as well as enhancing uterine contractile performance during labor.

Gonadotropin-inhibitory hormone (GnIH) plays an important role in reproduction by inhibiting the expression of gonadotropins in birds and mammals, but in fishes, it is ambiguous. In this study, we cloned 606 bp long cDNA of GnIH from Catla catla brain (cGnIH). The encoded preproGnIH peptide generated three putative peptides (cGnIH-I, -II, -III) of different size. Phylogenetic analysis of GnIH showed clustering of different peptide sequence with its orthologs in separate clades. The real-time PCR analysis showed the expression of cGnIH in brain, gonads, intestine, stomach, heart, gill and liver with the highest expression in the brain and gonads of both sexes. The basal GnIH mRNA expression was higher in spawning and spent phase of the male brain and spawning phase of the female brain. In testis, the expression was highest in spent phase, while in ovary the expression did not change significantly during reproductive phases. The in vivo experiment of cGnIH-III peptide exhibited the higher expression of HPG axis genes, lhb, fshb, cgnrh, kiss2 and kiss1r and serum hormone level of LH and FSH as soon as 3 h after the intramuscular delivery. These results suggest that the GnIH is positively involved in regulation of reproduction in HPG axis of C. catla.

In the southern Gulf of Mexico, the bonnethead shark, Sphyrna tiburo, is one of the most frequently captured species in landings of small-scale fisheries. Based on the analysis of two fishery-dependent sampling periods (1993-1994 and 2007-2014), this study aimed to determine reproductive parameters and identify temporal differences between the two time periods. In the first sampling period, 776 males and 352 females with a size range of 28.0-120.0 cm total stretched length (LT ) were analysed, and in the second sampling period, 387 males and 432 females with a size range of 28.0-122.0 cm LT were analysed. The size at 50% maturity in the second sampling period was significantly different between sexes, 82.6 cm LT for females and 73.8 cm LT for males (no estimation was possible for the first sampling period). The size at 50% maternity was not different between sampling periods, 97.3 cm LT for the first sampling period and 99.0 cm LT for the second sampling period. Litter size varied from 3 to 19 embryos and the average was not statistically different in both periods, 10.1 (S.D. = 3.8) for the first sampling period and 11.3 (S.D. = 3.5) for the second sampling period. The female reproductive cycle is asynchronous, and it seems to be annual, with a gestation period of 5-6 months, and a consecutive ovarian cycle and gestation period. Temporal (between sampling periods) and latitudinal (southern Gulf versus northern regions) variations occur in the synchronicity of the reproductive cycle, temporal variation in the relationship between maternal length and litter size, and latitudinal variation in average size of mature sharks.

Photoperiod and temperature are commonly accepted as the determinant factors for the control of the reproductive cycle in freshwater fishes. However, this determining effect is dependent on fish species. While applying a constant long photoperiod has an inhibitory effect in some species, the same photoperiodic manipulation has a stimulating effect in others. In cyprinids, a decrease in temperature or photoperiod can induce the gonad recrudescence. However, in roach Rutilus rutilus an early spring spawner cyprinid, there is little knowledge about the cueing role of each environmental factor. The aim of this work was to study the effect of a constant long photoperiod on the gametogenesis in roach. Fish were kept under either naturally simulated photoperiod or artificial constant long photoperiod and sampled at three times: at the beginning of photoperiod decrease, at the beginning of temperature decrease, and at the end of temperature decrease. Morphological parameters (gonado-somatic, hepato-somatic, and viscera-somatic indexes), plasma sexual steroids, and proportion of gametogenesis stages were estimated at each sampling time. The results showed that a constant, long photoperiod exerted inhibitory effects on gametogenesis advancement in both females and males that could stem from decrease of sex steroid production. Roach displayed a similar response to photoperiodic manipulations to other early spring spawners like percids, such as European perch, yellow perch and pikeperch. These results clearly showed the cueing role of the photoperiod in the induction of the reproductive cycle in roach.

The Hainan black goat is a high-quality local goat breed in Hainan Province of China. It is resistant to high temperatures, humidity, and disease. Although the meat of this breed is tender and delicious, its reproductive performance and milk yield are low. In this study, isobaric tags for relative and absolute quantitation (iTRAQ) technology was used to analyze the differentially expressed proteins in the serum of female Hainan black goats during the reproductive cycle (empty pregnant, estrus, gestation, and lactation). The pathway enrichment analysis results showed that most of the differentially expressed proteins between each period belonged to the complement and coagulation cascades. Analysis of the differential protein expression and function revealed seven proteins that were directly associated with reproduction, namely pre-SAA21, ANTXR2, vWF, SFRP3, ß4GalT1, pre-IGFBP2 and Ran. This study revealed the changing patterns of differentially expressed proteins in the reproductive cycle of the Hainan black goat. pre-SAA21, ANTXR2, vWF, SFRP3, ß4GalT1, pre-IGFBP2, and Ran were identified as candidate proteins for mediating the physiological state of Hainan black goats and regulating their fertility. This study elucidated the changes in expression levels of differentially expressed proteins during the reproductive cycle of Hainan black goats and also provides details about its breeding pattern.
