RESUMO

This study aimed to investigate the association between daily sedentary time and the risk of breast cancer (BC) in a large Japanese population. The participants were 36,023 women aged 35-69 years from the Japan Multi-Institutional Collaborative Cohort Study. Cox proportional hazards analysis was used to estimate adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for BC incidence in relation to time spent sedentarily (categorical variables: <7 and ≥7 hours/day [h/d]). Additionally, the associations of BC incidence to the joint effect of sedentary time with each component of physical activity, such as leisure-time metabolic equivalents (METs), frequency of leisure-time physical activity, and daily walking time, were examined. During 315,189 person-years of follow-up, 554 incident cases of BC were identified. When compared to participants who spent <7 h/d sedentary, those who spent ≥7 h/d sedentary have a significantly higher risk of BC (HR, 1.36; 95% CI, 1.07-1.71). The corresponding HRs among participants who spent ≥7 h/d sedentary with more physical activity, such as ≥1 h/d for leisure-time METs, ≥3 days/week of leisure-time physical activity, and ≥1 h/d of daily walking were 1.58 (95% CI, 1.11-2.25), 1.77 (95% CI, 1.20-2.61), and 1.42 (95% CI, 1.10-1.83), respectively, compared with those who spent <7 h/d sedentary. This study found that spending ≥7 h/d of sedentary time is associated with the risk of BC. Neither leisure-time physical activity nor walking had a BC-preventive effect in those with ≥7 h/d of sedentary time.

INTRODUCTION: Our primary goal was to investigate the independent and combined associations of physical activity (PA) and sitting time (ST) with femoral bone health among cancer survivors aged 60 or older. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 1159 cancer survivors aged 60 years or older who underwent femur dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) examination from continuous National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data sets. PA and ST were assessed by self-report, and bone health included bone mineral density (BMD) at all femoral sub-regions, osteopenia/osteoporosis of femoral neck, and total fracture. The independent and combined associations of PA and ST with femoral bone health were determined using multivariable linear or logistic regression analyses. RESULTS: More than 40% cancer survivors reported engaging in PA < 150 min/week with ST ≥ 6 h/d. PA solely showed no association with bone health at femur sites. Prolonged ST was associated with lower femur's BMD, higher prevalence of osteopenia/osteoporosis, and total fracture. Specifically, the negative association of prolonged ST and femur's BMD was shown in PA ≥ 150 min/week group, but not in PA < 150 min/week group. In combined analysis, prolonged ST with PA ≥ 150 min/week showed the strongest negative associations with femur's BMD. CONCLUSION: PA appears not to be directly associated with femoral bone health. Higher ST is associated with lower BMD and a higher incidence of total fractures, regardless of PA level, among cancer survivors aged 60 or older.

Sedentary behavior (SB) has been linked to risk factors of cardiometabolic disease, with inconsistent findings reported in the literature. We aimed to assess the associations of SB with multiple biomarkers of inflammation and insulin resistance in adults. Domain-specific SB, sitting time and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) were measured in 78 adults (mean ± SD 52.0 ± 10.8 y). Body fat percentage (BF%) was assessed using multi-frequency bioelectrical impedance. A blood draw assessed glucose, insulin, C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin-6 (IL-6), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), leptin, and adiponectin. Adiponectin-leptin ratio (ALR), homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) and beta-cell function (HOMA-ß) were calculated. Multivariable linear regression analyses, controlling for age, sex, MVPA, and BF%, were used to assess associations. After adjustment for age, sex and MVPA, total SB (7.5 ± 2.5 h/day) was positively associated with leptin, insulin, HOMA-IR, HOMA-ß (Standardized Beta (ß) range 0.21-0.32) and negatively associated with ALR (ß = -0.24, p < 0.05 for all). Similarly, total sitting time (7.2 ± 2.9 h/day) was associated with TNF-α (ß = 0.22) and ALR (ß = -0.26). These associations were attenuated to non-significance after adjustment for BF%. Leisure screen time was detrimentally associated with IL-6 (ß = 0.24), leptin (ß = 0.21), insulin (ß = 0.37), HOMA-IR (ß = 0.37), and HOMA-ß (ß = 0.34), independent of age, sex and MVPA (p < 0.05 for all). Only the associations with insulin (ß = 0.26), HOMA-IR (ß = 0.26), and HOMA-ß (ß = 0.23) remained significant after further controlling BF% (p < 0.05). Self-reported SB is associated with biomarkers of inflammation and insulin resistance, independent of MVPA, and in some cases BF%.

BACKGROUND: Sedentary behavior, or time spent sitting, may increase risk for dynapenic abdominal obesity (DAO), but there are currently no studies on this topic. AIMS: Therefore, we investigated the association between sedentary behaviour and DAO in a nationally representative sample of older adults from six low- and middle-income countries. METHODS: Cross-sectional data from the Study on Global AGEing and Adult Health were analysed. Dynapenia was defined as handgrip strength < 26 kg for men and < 16 kg for women. Abdominal obesity was defined as waist circumference of > 88 cm (> 80 cm for Asian countries) for women and > 102 cm (> 90 cm) for men. DAO was defined as having both dynapenia and abdominal obesity. Self-reported sedentary behavior was categorized as ≥ 8 h/day (high sedentary behaviour) or < 8 h/day. Multivariable multinomial logistic regression was conducted. RESULTS: Data on 20,198 adults aged ≥ 60 years were analyzed [mean (SD) age 69.3 (13.1) years; 54.1% females]. In the overall sample, ≥ 8 h of sedentary behavior per day (vs. <8 h) was significantly associated with 1.52 (95%CI = 1.11-2.07) times higher odds for DAO (vs. no dynapenia and no abdominal obesity), and this was particularly pronounced among males (OR = 2.27; 95%CI = 1.42-3.62). Highly sedentary behavior was not significantly associated with dynapenia alone or abdominal obesity alone. DISCUSSION: High sedentary behaviour may increase risk for DAO among older adults. CONCLUSIONS: Interventions to reduce sedentary behaviour may also lead to reduction of DAO and its adverse health outcomes, especially among males, pending future longitudinal research.

Knowledge of how the different types of sedentary behaviors (SB) are associated with functional limitations can guide professionals who work with older adults on better recommendations about the amount of daily time that should be encouraged in each type of SB. The objective was to estimate the associations between two SB typologies (SB television [TV] and SB computer/internet) and the presence of handgrip strength, lower limb strength, gait speed, and balance limitations in Brazilian community-dwelling older adults. This is a cross-sectional study with 1,298 community-dwelling older adults (≥60 years). SB was assessed by self-reporting daily time spent watching TV or using computer/internet (categorized into <2, 3-4, and ≥5 hr/day). Outcomes were handgrip strength, lower limb strength, gait speed, and balance limitations considering referenced cutoff points. Older adults in SB TV ≥5 hr/day had 1.75 (95% confidence interval [CI] [1.07, 2.86]) and 1.88 (95% CI [1.02, 3.46]) times more chances of handgrip strength and gait speed limitations, respectively. On the other hand, those who spent 3-4 and ≥5 hr/day in SB computer/internet had 0.45 (95% CI [0.20, 0.99]) and 0.37 (95% CI [0.15, 0.93]) had less chances of lower limb strength and balance limitations, respectively. In conclusion, functional limitations would be associated differently depending on the type of SB in the older adults sampled.

OBJECTIVES: This study investigates how 24-hour movement behaviors (physical activity, sedentary time, sleep) relate to cognitive performance in older adults. METHODS: 213 adults (aged 65+) wore accelerometers to track activity. Cognitive function was assessed using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). Isotemporal substitution analysis examined how replacing one behavior with another affected cognition. RESULTS: Increased light physical activity was linked to better cognitive function, whereas longer sleep had a negative impact. Replacing 30 min of sedentary behavior or sleep with light physical activity improved orientation, attention, language, and short-term memory. Substituting moderate-to-vigorous physical activity did not have the same cognitive benefit. CONCLUSION: Encouraging older adults to replace sedentary time or excess sleep with light physical activity could support cognitive health and potentially help prevent dementia. These findings have implications for public health strategies promoting cognitive well-being in aging populations.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the current situation of sitting time and health literacy among high school students in China, in order to provide a basis for improving their physical and mental health levels. METHODS: A stratified random cluster sampling method was used to investigate the length of sitting time and health literacy of first and second grade high school students from 31 provinces, cities, and autonomous regions in China(data did not include that of Hong Kong and Macao Special Administrative Region, and Taiwan Province of China). The Kruskal-Wallis H method, independent sample Mann-Whitney U test, and regression model were used to analyze the influencing factors of sitting time and total health literacy score. RESULTS: (1) The total score of health literacy was statistically significant (P < 0.01) in different regions, urban and rural distribution, annual family income, parents' educational background, age, and gender. (2) The length of sitting was statistically significant (P < 0.01) among multiple groups in different regions, family annual income, parental education, and gender. However, there was no statistically significant difference between groups of different ages and urban-rural distribution (P>0.05). (3) The analysis of multiple linear regression model showed that the total score of health literacy was positively correlated with the family' s annual income and the mother' s education, and negatively correlated with the father' s education and the length of sitting. Standardized regression coefficient ß comparison: Father' s education (-0.32) > family annual income (0.15) > mother' s education (0.09) > average daily sitting time (-0.02), with father' s education having the greatest impact, followed by family annual income. The length of sitting was positively related to the family' s annual income and the mother' s educational background, and negatively related to the total score of health literacy. Standardized regression coefficient ß comparison: Annual family income (0.14) > education background of mother (0.13)> total score of health literacy (-0.02), with the impact of annual family income the largest, followed by education background of mother. CONCLUSION: China' s first and second grade high school students generally spend a long time sitting every day, and the level of health literacy is generally low. The level of health literacy and sitting time are negatively correlated with each other, and are most influenced by the educational background of high school students' parents and their family economic levels.

Adults with chronic kidney disease (CKD) tend to be extremely sedentary. We investigated the feasibility and acceptability of a sedentary-reducing intervention for adults with CKD. The intervention utilized telephone-delivered coaching and a consumer wearable device to support participants to reduce their sedentary time. The mean age of participants in the sample was 60.5 years; 72% were women, and 83% had CKD Stage 3. At baseline, participants spent 73% of their waking time sedentary. Inter vention phone call attendance was 100%, study retention was 82%, and the intervention was rated as enjoyable (9.1/10). A telephone-delivered, sedentary-reducing intervention is feasible and acceptable in adults with CKD. Future work is needed investigating the efficacy of sedentary-reducing interventions for adults with CKD.

AIM: To investigate the association of social isolation with physical activity and leisure-time sedentary behavior among adolescents. METHODS: We used data from the Global School-based Health Survey, including a representative sample of 296,861 adolescents (11-18y) from 79 countries (48.9% girls, 14.5 ± 1.6 years). Social isolation was estimated by combining the self-reported number of friends and loneliness perception. Physical activity and leisure-time sedentary behavior were assessed through questionnaires. Multinomial logistic regression models were created to analyze the associations of social isolation with physical activity and leisure-time sedentary behavior. RESULTS: Compared with those practicing ≥60 min of physical activity during 1-4 days/week, social isolation was associated with a higher prevalence of not practicing physical activity (Prevalence ratio [PR]:1.24; 95%CI:1.19-1.29), and a lower prevalence of practicing during ≥5d/wk. (PR:0.91; 95%CI:0.88-0.94). Compared with <4 h/d of leisure-time sedentary behavior, being socially isolated was also associated with a higher prevalence of 4-7 h/d (PR: 1.08; 95%CI:1.03-1.14) and ≥ 8 h/d (PR: 1.24; 95%CI:1.16-1.33) of leisure-time sedentary behavior. Compared with those participants without elevated leisure-time sedentary behavior and with those practicing adequate physical activity, social isolation was independently associated with a higher prevalence of physical inactivity (PR: 1.20; 95%CI: 1.15-1.26) and elevated leisure-time sedentary behavior (PR: 1.21; 95%CI: 1.14-1.30), as well as with both risk factors simultaneously (PR: 1.36; 95%CI: 1.28-1.45). CONCLUSION: Reducing social isolation could be an important component of future interventions to reduce sedentary behavior and physical inactivity among adolescents.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between lifestyle and gallstones. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed an observational study using the 2018-2020 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Univariate and multivariate-adjusted logistic regression analyses were performed to assess the correlations between lifestyle factors and gallstone risk. Second, Mendelian randomization (MR) was applied to decrease the causal relationship between lifestyle factors and gallstones. RESULTS: This observational study enrolled 11,970 individuals. The risk of gallstones was found to increase with increased sitting time (odds ratio (OR) 1.03, 95% CI 1.00-1.05, p = 0.02). In contrast, the risk of gallstones was found to decrease with recreational activity (OR 0.50, 95% CI 0.29-0.87, p = 0.02). The results of the MR also showed that time spent watching television (OR 1.646; 95% CI 1.161-2.333, p = 0.005) and physical activity (OR 0.953, 95% CI 0.924-0.988, p = 0.003) remained independently causally associated with gallstones. CONCLUSIONS: Prolonged sitting increases the risk of gallstones, whereas recreational activity reduces the risk. These findings need to be verified in further prospective cohort studies with larger sample sizes and longer follow-up periods.

PURPOSE: To investigate the long-term effect of sitting time and physical activity after a skin cancer diagnosis. METHODS: A cohort of a nationally representative sample of skin cancer survivors (n=862) and non-cancer adults (n=13691) ≥50 years from the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Mortality data were linked through December 31, 2019. RESULTS: During up to 13.2 years of follow-up (median, 6.3 years; 94,093 person-years), 207 deaths (cancer: 53) occurred in skin cancer survivors and 1970 (cancer: 414) in non-cancer adults. After adjusting for covariates and skin cancer type, being active was associated with lower risks of all-cause (HR=0.69; 95% CI: 0.47 to 1.00) and non-cancer (HR=0.59; 95% CI: 0.36 to 0.97) mortality compared to being inactive among skin cancer survivors. Meanwhile, sitting 8 h/d was associated with higher risks of all-cause (HR=1.72; 95% CI: 1.11 to 2.67) and non-cancer (HR=1.76; 95% CI: 1.07 to 2.92) mortality compared to sitting <6 h/d. In the joint analysis, inactive skin cancer survivors sitting >8 h/d had the highest mortality risks from all-cause (HR=2.26; 95% CI: 1.28 to 4.00) and non-cancer (HR=2.11; 95% CI,1.10 to 4.17). Additionally, the associations of LTPA and sitting time with all-cause and cause-specific mortality did not differ between skin cancer survivors and non-cancer adults (all P for interaction>0.05) CONCLUSION: The combination of prolonged sitting and lack of physical activity was associated with elevated risks of all-cause and non-cancer deaths among US skin cancer survivors. Skin cancer survivors could benefit from maintaining a physically active lifestyle.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic may have reduced opportunities for engaging in physical activity (PA) and increased sedentary behavior (SB) among workers. However, most previous studies used self-reported assessments. This study aimed to examine the changes in accelerometer-measured PA and SB from before to after COVID-19 outbreak among Japanese workers. METHODS: This one-year longitudinal study used data from the annual health check-ups of workers who lived in the Tokyo metropolitan area. Baseline and follow-up data were collected from June to November, 2019 and June to November, 2020, respectively. Participants were asked to wear the accelerometer on their hip during awake hours for at least 10 days in both the surveys. Before the analysis, considering the difference in wearing time, time spent in PA and SB were converted to the percentage of wearing time. To investigate the changes in PA or SB from before to during COVID-19 outbreak, paired t-tests were performed. RESULTS: Of the 757 eligible participants, 536 were included in the analysis (70.8%). Participants' mean age was 53.3 years; 69.6% were female; and most were full-time employees. Time spent in PA decreased, regardless of weekdays or weekends, although changes on the weekends were not significant. Conversely, time spent in SB increased on both weekdays and weekends in 2020. These changes corresponded to approximately 10 minutes per day increase/decrease in PA/SB. CONCLUSION: Objectively measured PA decreased and SB increased by approximately 10 minutes per day after the COVID-19 outbreak among Japanese workers.

BACKGROUND: Excess weight is increasing worldwide, and in Latin America more than half of the population is excess weight. One of the reasons for this increase has been excessive sitting time. Still, it remains to be seen whether there is an excessive amount of that time in Latin American adults. This study aimed to associate different sitting time cut-off points with the excess weight. METHODS: Data from the Latin American Study of Nutrition and Health (ELANS), a cross-sectional population-based survey conducted in eight Latin American countries, were used. The excess weight indicators used were body mass index, and waist and neck circumferences. Sitting time was obtained using questionnaires and categorized at different cut-off points. Differences between sitting time categories (< 4 or ≥ 4; < 6 or ≥ 6; and < 8 or ≥ 8 hours/day) and excess weight were obtained by Student's t test for independent samples and the association between sitting time categories and different indicators of excess weight were obtained by logistic regression. RESULTS: The median of the sitting time was 420 min/day (IQR: 240-600). There were no significant differences between body mass index (kg/m2) and waist circumference (cm) with categories of sitting time. The mean values of neck circumference (cm) were significantly higher in ≥4, ≥6 and ≥ 8 hours/day than < 4, < 6, and < 8 hours/day of sitting time in the pooled sample. Some distinct differences by country were observed. There were significant differences among excess weight by body mass index (63.2% versus 60.8) with < 8 vs ≥8 hours/day of sitting time. The proportion of excess weight by neck circumference was higher in participants who reported ≥4, ≥6, and ≥ 8 hours/day compared to < 4, < 6, and < 8 hours/day of sitting time. Considering ≥8 hours/day of sitting time, higher odds of excess weight were found evaluated by body mass index (OR: 1.10; 95% CI: 1.01, 1.20) and neck circumference (OR: 1.13; CI 95%: 1.03, 1.24) overall. CONCLUSIONS: Sitting time above 8 hours/day was associated with higher odds of excess weight, even though there were no differences in waist circumference between sitting time categories. BACKGROUND: Evidence on all-cause mortality attributable to joint sitting time and physical inactivity is lacking. In this study, we estimated the proportion and number of deaths attributable to sitting time and physical inactivity in Chilean adults. METHODS: A sample of 5834 adults aged 20-96 years from a 2016-2017 Chilean National Health Survey was included to describe the prevalence of 16 joint categories of sitting time and physical activity. Relative risks for the joint association of sitting time and physical inactivity were obtained from a meta-analysis of individual participant data. We retrieved the number of deaths in adults ≥ 20 years in 2019 from the Chilean Ministry of Health. RESULTS: Participants with high sitting time (> 8 h/day) and low physical activity (< 2.5 MET-hour/week) were more likely to be women, 20-64 years, non-indigenous ethnicity, lived in the urban areas, had middle education level and monthly household income, and had public health insurance. Reducing sitting time and increasing physical activity to a theoretical minimum risk exposure level could prevent up to 11,470 deaths or 10.4% of all deaths. Increasing physical activity to >35.5 MET-hour/week and maintaining sitting time could prevent approximately 10,477 deaths or 9.5% of all deaths. Reducing sitting time to < 4 h/day and maintaining physical activity would not reduce the number of deaths (-3.4% or 38 deaths). CONCLUSION: Reducing sitting time may be ancillary for preventing mortality. Therefore, increasing physical activity should be the primary focus of interventions and policies in Chile.

OBJECTIVES: Insufficient physical activity (PA) and prolonged sitting time (ST) increase the risk of chronic disease and mortality. Caring for young children can potentially impact maternal PA and sedentary behaviours. The aims of this study were to explore the levels of PA and ST in women with young children (infants, toddlers and preschoolers) and sociodemographic and behavioural factors associated with these. STUDY DESIGN: This was a population-based cross-sectional study. METHODS: Survey 5 data collected in 2009 (n = 4290) of the 1973-1978 birth cohort of the Australian Longitudinal Study on Women's Health were used. Multiple linear and logistic regression models were used to examine associations. RESULTS: In adjusted models, compared with women with preschoolers, women whose youngest child was an infant aged 0-6 months, aged >6-12 months or toddler had lower PA (-321.3 MET.min/week [95% confidence interval (CI) -416.2, -226.4], -147.9 MET.min/week [95% CI -237.6, -58.1] and -106.4 MET.min/week [95% CI -172.3, -40.5]). ST was higher in women whose youngest child was an infant aged 0-6 months (0.48 h/day; 95% CI 0.19, 0.77) but lower with infants aged >6-12 months (-0.33 h/day; 95% CI -0.60, -0.05) and toddlers (-0.40 h/day; 95% CI -0.60, -0.20) than in those with preschoolers. The findings were similar in the logistic model. Sociodemographic and behavioural factors such as occupation and marital status also influenced PA and ST. CONCLUSIONS: Women with infants and toddlers have lower PA than women with preschoolers. Women are more likely to sit more in the first 6 months after childbirth. These findings can inform resources and intervention development to improve activity levels in women with young children through consideration of the age of the youngest child, sociodemographic and behavioural factors.

A link between inappropriate physical behaviour patterns (low physical activity and high sedentary behaviour) and poor health outcomes has been observed. To provide evidence to quantify this link, it is important to have valid and reliable assessment tools. This study aimed to assess the validity and reliability of the activPAL4TM monitor for distinguishing postures and measuring stepping activity of 6-12-year-old children. Thirteen children (8.5 ± 1.8 years) engaged in pre-determined standardised (12 min) and non-standardised (6 min) activities. Agreement, specificity and positive predictive value were assessed between the activPAL4TM and direct observation (DO) (nearest 0.1 s). Between-activPAL4TM (inter-device) and between-observer (inter-rater) reliability were determined. Detection of sitting and stepping time and forward purposeful step count were all within 5% of DO. Standing time was slightly overestimated (+10%) and fast walking/jogging steps underestimated (-20%). For non-standardised activities, activPAL4TM step count matched most closely to combined backward and forward purposeful steps; however, agreement varied widely. The activPAL4TM demonstrated high levels of reliability (ICC(1, 1) > 0.976), which were higher in some instances than could be achieved through direct observation (ICC(2, 1) > 0.851 for non-standardised activities). Overall, the activPAL4TM recorded standardised activities well. However, further work is required to establish the exact nature of steps counted by the activPAL4TM.

In a randomized crossover trial, we examined the effects of interrupting sedentary behavior on glycemic control in trained older adults, before and after 2 weeks of detraining. Fourteen participants (65-90 years old) completed two 7-hr conditions before and after 2 weeks of detraining: (a) uninterrupted sitting (SIT) and (b) sitting plus 2 min of moderate-intensity activity every 30 min (INT). Both before and after detraining, no differences were observed for 7-hr glucose area under the curve (7 hr AUC) and mean glucose between sitting plus 2 min of moderate-intensity activity and uninterrupted sitting conditions. After detraining and for the SIT condition, higher values of 7-hr AUC (p = .014) and mean glucose (p = .015) were observed, indicating worsened glycemic control. No changes were observed in INT condition between both time points. Frequent interruptions in sedentary behavior had no effect on glycemic control, prior to or after detraining. Even so, older adults experiencing a short-term detraining period should avoid prolonged bouts of sedentary behavior that may jeopardize their glycemic control.

Objectives Japan has a high prevalence of low back pain among older adults requiring long-term care, which results in increasing expenses; therefore, prevention measures are necessary. This study aimed to examine the relationship between low back pain and physical activity and sitting time according to sex and age (65-74 years [young-old adults]; ≥75 years [old-old adults]) who had not received long-term care certification.Methods A self-administered survey was mailed to 7,080 adults >65 years of age residing in Tsuru City (Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan) from January to February 2018, and had not received long-term care certification. Demographic information, health status (body mass index and medical history), lifestyle (dietary habits, alcohol consumption, and smoking), presence of low back pain, physical activity, sitting time, and social participation were measured. Low back pain was evaluated by asking, "Did you experience pain in parts of the body other than the knees for the past month?" Those who answered, "experienced low back pain" were categorized as "with low back pain". The short form of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire was used to assess physical activity, which was categorized into three groups: <150, 150-299, and ≥300 min/week. Sitting time was divided into two groups: <480 and ≥480 min/day. Multiple logistic regression analysis was used to determine the association between low back pain and physical activity and sitting time, according to sex and age.Results Of the 7,080 individuals surveyed, 4,877 responded (2,217 male, 2,660 female), corresponding to a response rate of 68.9%. The number of older adults with low back pain was 1,542 (31.6%) including 673 (30.4%) males and 869 (32.7%) females. The rate of low back pain in young-old adults was 29.8% and 33.6% in old-old adults. There was no significant relationship between lower back pain and physical activity among the young-old adults. In the old-old adults, there was a significant relationship in the male ≥300 min group (odds ratio [OR] 0.66 [95%CI 0.48-0.89]), and in both female 150-299 (OR 0.69 [95%CI 0.48-0.99]) and ≥300 (OR 0.59 [95%CI 0.44-0.80]) min/week groups.Conclusion The complaint rate for low back pain was approximately 30%, regardless of sex or age. These results suggest that interventions to prevent low back pain are necessary. Moreover, physical activity, but not sitting time, was associated with low back pain in both males and females among the old-old adults.

Background: Sedentary behavior is associated with an increased risk of chronic diseases, such as metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes and all-cause mortality. Occupational sitting time contributes to large amounts of daily sedentary behavior, especially in office workers. Objective: This study investigated the amount of time spent in sedentary behavior during different tasks at work and while commuting of administrative personnel of a university hospital in Germany. Material and methods: A cross-sectional questionnaire-based study of administrative employees at the University Hospital Regensburg, Germany was carried out to assess work-related sedentary behavior. Descriptive and exploratory statistical analyses were performed. Results: The study population consisted of 159 participants (54.1% women, 51.6% older than 40 years), which corresponds to a response rate of 26%. The median daily sitting time in the office was 7.0 h (interquartile range, IQR 6.0-7.5 h) and mostly occurred during computer work (57.3%), telephone calls (13.2%) and meetings (11.7%). Median standing time at work was 0.8 h (IQR 0.3-1.4 h). Administrative staff spent a median of 0.7 h (IQR 0.3-1.0 h) per day sedentary while commuting, with 67.3% of respondents commuting by car, motorbike or scooter. The participants were of the opinion that sitting for long uninterrupted periods had negative (69.6%) or relatively negative (29.7%) effects on health. Conclusion: Administrative staff in hospitals spend large amounts of the daily working time with sedentary behavior. Interventions that enable working both in sitting and standing positions can lead to reduced work-related sitting time and thereby could improve occupational and, in a broader sense, public health.

QUESTIONS: What are the daily temporal patterns of movement behaviours (sedentary time, light-intensity physical activity, and moderate-vigorous physical activity) in people with stroke? Do daily temporal patterns of sedentary time differ (a) between subgroups of people with different movement behaviour classifications and (b) over time during the first year after stroke? DESIGN: This study represents secondary exploratory analyses from an observational, longitudinal cohort study (n = 197). PARTICIPANTS: This study included people with first-ever stroke recruited from 4 hospitals in the Netherlands. OUTCOME MEASURES: Movement behaviour was objectively measured using the Activ8 activity monitor within 3 weeks after hospital discharge and again at 6 and 12 months later. RESULTS: Participants spent the least time sedentary in the morning with proportionally more sedentary time as the day progressed with maximal sedentary time seen in the evening hours. This pattern did not substantially change over time. Sedentary prolongers spent significantly more absolute time sedentary for each hour of the day, but the daily temporal pattern of sedentary time did not differ between this group and either "sedentary movers" or "sedentary exercisers." CONCLUSION: People living at home after stroke are highly sedentary, particularly in the afternoons and evenings, and this pattern does not change during the first year after stroke. Clinicians should encourage people with stroke to find meaningful tasks to do during the day to reduce their sitting time. Researchers developing interventions to encourage people to sit less should include particular focus on the afternoon and evening time periods.
