RESUMO

Among a statewide cohort of 1874 patients surviving hospitalization for drug use-associated endocarditis during 2017-2020, the 3-year risk of death or future hospitalization was 38% (16% for death before later infection, 14% for recurrent endocarditis, 14% for soft tissue, 9% for bacteremia, 5% for bone/joint, and 4% for spinal infections).

OBJECTIVES: To investigate clinical outcomes of patients with Pseudomonas endocarditis and identify factors associated with treatment failure. METHODS: Adult patients meeting definitive Duke's criteria for Pseudomonas endocarditis at 11 hospitals were identified between May 2000 and February 2024. Failure was defined as death or microbiological failure by day 42. First-line therapy consisted of cefepime, piperacillin/tazobactam, ceftazidime or ceftolozane/tazobactam alone or in combination. RESULTS: Forty-eight patients met inclusion criteria; 29% were persons who inject drugs and 13% were organ transplant recipients. Pseudomonas aeruginosa was the causative species in 98% of cases. Patients who experienced 42 day cure were more likely to be initially managed with first-line ß-lactam agents compared with those who experienced clinical failure (97% versus 62%, P = 0.004). Treatment with first-line ß-lactams was associated with shorter time to treatment initiation and a lower likelihood of infection due to MDR Pseudomonas spp. In the univariate model, patients who experienced 90 day mortality were more likely to have prosthetic valve endocarditis (57% versus 24%, P = 0.02), an intracardiac complication (36% versus 9%, P = 0.04) and a higher median (IQR) Pitt bacteraemia score [2.5 (2-3.8) versus 1 (0-2), P = 0.048]. Combination therapy did not improve clinical outcomes but did increase the rate of adverse effects resulting in drug discontinuation compared with monotherapy, (21% versus 0%, P = 0.08). CONCLUSIONS: This is the largest study of Pseudomonas endocarditis to date. We identified improved clinical outcomes when cefepime, piperacillin/tazobactam, ceftazidime or ceftolozane/tazobactam were used for initial treatment. We did not identify a clinical benefit for combination treatment.

INTRODUCTION: Right-side infective endocarditis (RSIE) is caused by microorganisms and develops into intracardiac and extracardiac complications with high in-hospital and 1-year mortality. Treatments involve antibiotic and surgical intervention. However, those presenting with extremes e.g. heart failure, or septic shock who are not ideal candidates for conventional medical therapy might benefit from minimally invasive procedures. OBJECTIVE: This review summarizes existing observational studies that reported minimally invasive procedures to debulk vegetation due to infective endocarditis either on valve or cardiac implantable electronic devices. METHODS: A targeted literature review was conducted to identify studies published in PubMed/MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Cochrane Central Database from January 1, 2015 to June 5, 2023. The efficacy and/or effectiveness of minimally invasive procedural interventions to debulk vegetation due to RSIE were summarized following PRISMA guidelines. RESULTS: A total of 11 studies with 208 RSIE patients were included. There were 9 studies that assessed the effectiveness of the AngioVac system and 2 assessed the Penumbra system. Overall procedure success rate was 87.9%. Among 8 studies that reported index hospitalization, 4 studies reported no death, while the other 4 studies reported 10 deaths. CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrates that multiple systems can provide minimally invasive procedure options for patients with RSIE with high procedural success. However, there are mixed results regarding complications and mortality rates. Further large cohort studies or randomized clinical trials are warranted to assess and/or compare the efficacy and safety of these systems.

PURPOSE: To compare the effectiveness and safety of cefazolin versus cloxacillin for the treatment of infective endocarditis (IE) due to methicillin-sensitive Staphylococci (MSS). METHODS: Data were retrospectively collected on patients treated for a definite MSS endocarditis who received cefazolin or cloxacillin for at least 10 consecutive days in six French hospitals between January-1 2014 and December-31 2020. The primary endpoint was treatment failure defined as a composite of death within 90 days of starting antibiotherapy, or embolic event during antibiotherapy, or relapse of IE within 90 days of stopping antibiotherapy. We used Cox regression adjusted for the inverse probability of treatment weighting of receiving cefazolin. RESULTS: 192 patients were included (median age 67.8 years). IE was caused by S.aureus in 175 (91.1%) and by coagulase-negative staphylococci in 17 (8.9%). Ninety-four patients (48.9%) received cefazolin, and 98 (51%) received cloxacillin. 34 patients (34.7%) with cefazolin and 26 (27.7%) with cloxacillin met the composite primary endpoint, with no significant differences between groups (adjusted HR = 1.13, 95% CI 0.63 to 2.03). There were no significant differences in secondary efficacy endpoints or biological safety events. CONCLUSION: The effectiveness of cefazolin did not significantly differ from cloxacillin for the treatment of MSS endocarditis.

PURPOSE: S. aureus bacteremia (SAB) is a common and severe infection with high mortality and morbidity. The clinical relevance of the finding of concurrent S. aureus bacteriuria (SABU) is debated. The goal of this study was to analyze whether a concurrent SABU is associated with complicated SAB, infective endocarditis (IE) and mortality. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study, reviewing medical charts of all episodes of SAB in patients > 18 years in the region of Skåne, Sweden, between 1st of January and 31st of June 2020. Episodes where a concurrent urine culture was performed were included for analysis. An episode was considered as complicated SAB if there was either attributable mortality, recurrent infection, embolic stroke, or occurrence of a complicated focus of infection. RESULTS: During the study period, there were 279 episodes of SAB. 154 episodes met the eligibility criteria, of whom 37 (24%) had concurrent SABU. In 78 episodes (51%), the patients had a complicated SAB. There was a significantly lower proportion of complicated SAB for episodes with concurrent SABU (32%), compared to episodes without concurrent SABU (56%), p-value 0.014. Moreover, in the cohort there were 11 episodes (7.1%) of IE and a 30 days mortality rate of 16%, with no difference between the groups with or without SABU. CONCLUSIONS: There is an association between concurrent SABU and a decreased risk for complicated SAB among patients with SAB. This study found no significant association between SABU and neither IE nor mortality for patients with SAB.

AIMS: Debulking of infective mass to reduce the burden if infective material is a fundamental principle in the surgical management of infection. The aim of this study was to investigate the validity of this principle in patients undergoing transvenous lead extraction in the context of bloodstream infection (BSI). METHODS AND RESULTS: We performed an observational single-centre study on patients that underwent transvenous lead extraction due to a BSI, with or without lead-associated vegetations, in combination with a percutaneous aspiration system during the study period 2015-22. One hundred thirty-seven patients were included in the final analysis. In patients with an active BSI at the time of intervention, the use of a percutaneous aspiration system had a significant impact on survival (log-rank: P = 0.0082), while for patients with a suppressed BSI at the time of intervention, the use of a percutaneous aspiration system had no significant impact on survival (log-rank: P = 0.25). CONCLUSION: A reduction of the infective burden by percutaneous debulking of lead vegetations might improve survival in patients with an active BSI.

BACKGROUND: In this prospective, observational study, we aimed to investigate epidemiologic and microbial trends of infective endocarditis in western Norway. METHODS: Clinical and microbiological characteristics of 497 cases of infective endocarditis from 2016 through 2022 were investigated. Categorical data were analysed using Chi-squared tests. Survival data were analysed using multiple Cox regression and reported using hazard ratios. RESULTS: The mean age was 67 years, and 74% were men. The annual incidence rates varied from 10.4 to 14.1 per 100,000 inhabitants per year. Infective endocarditis on native valves was observed in 257 (52%) of the cases, whereas infective endocarditis on prosthetic valves and/or cardiac implantable electronic devices was observed in 240 (48%) of the cases: infection on surgically implanted bioprostheses was observed in 124 (25%) of the patients, infection on transcatheter aortic valve implantation was observed in 47 (10%) patients, and infection on mechanical valves was observed in 34 (7%) cases. Infection related to cardiac implantable electronic devices was observed in a total of 50 (10%) cases. Staphylococcus aureus and viridans streptococci were the most common microbial causes, and isolated in 145 (29%) and 130 (26%) of the cases, respectively. Enterococcal endocarditis showed a rising trend during the study period and constituted 90 (18%) of our total cases of infective endocarditis, and 67%, 47%, and 26% of the cases associated with prosthetic material, transcatheter aortic valve implantation and cardiac implantable electronic devices, respectively. There was no significant difference in 90-day mortality rates between the native valve endocarditis group (12%) and the group with infective endocarditis on prosthetic valves or cardiac implants (14%), p = 0.522. In a model with gender, age, people who inject drugs, microbiology and type of valve affected, only advanced age was significantly associated with fatal outcome within 90 days. CONCLUSIONS: The incidence of infective endocarditis, and particularly enterococcal endocarditis, increased during the study period. Enterococci appeared to have a particular affinity for prosthetic cardiac material. Advanced age was the only independent risk factor for death within 90 days.

INTRODUCTION: Infective endocarditis is a rare but potentially severe disease, associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Our study aims to describe the epidemiology and management aspects of endocarditis in northern Morocco and compare it with international management guidelines. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a retrospective study involving all patients hospitalized in the cardiology department of the University Hospital of Tangier for infective endocarditis over a period of 4 years and 7 months, from May 2019 to February 2024. RESULTS: Eighty patients were hospitalized for IE during the study period. The average age of the patients was 46 years, with an even sex ratio. IE concerned native valves in 77% of cases, mechanical prostheses in 19% of cases, and on bio prostheses in 4%. The average diagnostic delay was 25 days. Blood cultures were negative in 59% of cases. The predominant infective microorganism was the bacteria Staphylococcus (65.6%). Imaging results showed vegetations in 76.3% of cases, predominantly on the mitral valve (39.3%), followed by the aortic valve (21.3%). The main complications included heart failure (51.2%), peripheral arterial embolisms (22.5%) and splenic infarction (17.5%). Management wise, the most commonly used antibiotic therapy was a combination of ceftriaxone and gentamicin. Clinical and biological improvement was observed in 70% of cases, with a mortality rate of 12.5%. Twelve patients underwent surgery (15%). Urgent surgery was indicated in 66,7% of the operated patients. CONCLUSION: Our study highlights the challenges in managing infective endocarditis in northern Morocco. The prognosis of infective endocarditis can be improved through multidisciplinary management within the implementation of an Endocarditis Team.

BACKGROUND: MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus)-infective endocarditis (IE) is associated with high morbidity and mortality. This study aimed to assess data from patients with MRSA-IE across multiple facilities in Japan, with a specific focus on antimicrobial therapy and prognosis. METHODS: This retrospective study enrolled patients with a confirmed diagnosis of IE attributed to MRSA, spanning the period from January 2015 to April 2019. RESULTS: Sixty-four patients from 19 centers were included, with a median age of 67 years. The overall mortality rate was 28.1% at 30 days, with an in-hospital mortality of 45.3%. The most frequently chosen initial anti-MRSA agents were glycopeptide in 67.2% of cases. Daptomycin and linezolid were selected as initial therapy in 23.4% and 17.2% of cases, respectively. Approximately 40% of all patients underwent medication changes due to difficulty in controlling infection or drug-related side effects. Significant prognostic factors by multivariable analysis were DIC for 30-day mortality and surgical treatment for 30-day and in-hospital mortality. For vancomycin as initial monotherapy, there was a trend toward a worse prognosis for 30-day and in-hospital mortality (OR, 6.29; 95%CI, 1.00-39.65; p = 0.050, OR, 3.61; 95%CI, 0.93-14.00; p = 0.064). Regarding the choice of initial antibiotic therapy, statistical analysis did not show significant differences in prognosis. CONCLUSION: Glycopeptide and daptomycin were the preferred antibiotics for the initial therapy of MRSA-IE. Antimicrobial regimens were changed for various reasons. Prognosis was not significantly affected by choice of antibiotic therapy (glycopeptide, daptomycin, linezolid), but further studies are needed to determine which antimicrobials are optimal as first-line agents.

AIM: To describe the changes observed in operated patients with infective endocarditis (IE) in the south-central region of Chile during the last four decades. METHODS: Case series study. The target population was patients diagnosed with IE and indication for valve surgery between 1983 and 2020 from a Chilean public hospital. The universe (n = 306) was divided into four groups according to the period of valve surgery. Sociodemographic and clinical variables between these groups were compared using the Kruskal-Wallis and Chi-square tests for independence. Cumulative survivals were calculated and compared using the Gehan-Breslow-Wilcoxon test. RESULTS: Age at diagnosis (p < 0.001), frequency of comorbidities (p < 0.001), clinical presentation compatible with acute kidney injury (p < 0.001), independent mitral valve involvement (p < 0.001), positivity of microbiological cultures (p < 0.012) and cumulative survival (p = 0,015) increased. The delay from symptom onset to diagnosis (p = 0.003), clinical presentation compatible with heart failure (p < 0.001), independent involvement of the aortic valve (p < 0.001), and surgical indication for large vegetation (p < 0.001) decreased. CONCLUSIONS: The IE profile of patients seen in a public hospital in the south-central region of Chile has undergone significant changes during the last four decades.

BACKGROUND: Patients with infective endocarditis on the left side of the heart are typically treated with intravenous antibiotic agents for up to 6 weeks. Whether a shift from intravenous to oral antibiotics once the patient is in stable condition would result in efficacy and safety similar to those with continued intravenous treatment is unknown. METHODS: In a randomized, noninferiority, multicenter trial, we assigned 400 adults in stable condition who had endocarditis on the left side of the heart caused by streptococcus, Enterococcus faecalis, Staphylococcus aureus, or coagulase-negative staphylococci and who were being treated with intravenous antibiotics to continue intravenous treatment (199 patients) or to switch to oral antibiotic treatment (201 patients). In all patients, antibiotic treatment was administered intravenously for at least 10 days. If feasible, patients in the orally treated group were discharged to outpatient treatment. The primary outcome was a composite of all-cause mortality, unplanned cardiac surgery, embolic events, or relapse of bacteremia with the primary pathogen, from the time of randomization until 6 months after antibiotic treatment was completed. RESULTS: After randomization, antibiotic treatment was completed after a median of 19 days (interquartile range, 14 to 25) in the intravenously treated group and 17 days (interquartile range, 14 to 25) in the orally treated group (P=0.48). The primary composite outcome occurred in 24 patients (12.1%) in the intravenously treated group and in 18 (9.0%) in the orally treated group (between-group difference, 3.1 percentage points; 95% confidence interval, -3.4 to 9.6; P=0.40), which met noninferiority criteria. CONCLUSIONS: In patients with endocarditis on the left side of the heart who were in stable condition, changing to oral antibiotic treatment was noninferior to continued intravenous antibiotic treatment. Non-ß-hemolytic streptococci (NBHS) cause infective endocarditis (IE) and a short blood culture time to positivity (TTP) is associated with risk of IE in bacteremia with other pathogens. In this retrospective population-based cohort study, we investigate if TTP is associated to IE or mortality. Of 263 episodes with NBHS bacteremia, 28 represented IE and the median TTP did not differ significantly between episodes with IE (15 h) and non-IE (15 h) (p=0.51). TTP was similar among those who survived and those who died within 30 days. However, TTP significantly differed when comparing the different streptococcal groups (p<0.001).

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of surgical timing on survival in patients with left-sided infective endocarditis (IE). This was a retrospective study including 313 patients with left-sided IE between 2009 and 2017. Surgery was defined as urgent (US) or early (ES) if performed within 7 or 28 days, respectively. A multivariable Cox regression analysis including US and ES as time-dependent variables was performed to assess the impact on 1-year mortality. ES was associated with a better survival (aHR 0.349, 95% CI 0.135-0.902), as US (aHR 0.262, 95% CI 0.075-0.915). ES and US were associated with a better prognosis in patients with left-sided IE.

The aim of the study was to analyze the epidemiological and clinical changes in EFIE. All definite IE episodes treated at a referral center between 2007 and 2018 were registered prospectively, and a trend test was used to study etiologies over time. EFIE cases were divided into three periods, and clinical differences between them were analyzed. All episodes of E. faecalis monomicrobial bacteremia (EFMB) between 2010 and 2018 and the percentage of echocardiograms performed were retrospectively collected. Six hundred forty-eight IE episodes were studied. We detected an increase in the percentage of EFIE (15% in 2007, 25.3% in 2018, P = 0.038), which became the most prevalent causative agent of IE during the last study period. One hundred and eight EFIE episodes were analyzed (2007-2010, n = 30; 2011-2014, n = 22; 2015-2018, n = 56). The patients in the last period were older (median 70.9 vs 66.5 vs 76.3 years, P = 0.015) and more frequently had an abdominal origin of EFIE (20% vs 13.6% vs 42.9%, P = 0.014), fewer indications for surgery (63.3% vs 54.6% vs 32.1%, P = 0.014), and non-significantly lower in-hospital mortality (30% vs 18.2% vs 12.5%, P = 0.139). There was an increase in the percentage of echocardiograms performed in patients with EFMB (30% in 2010, 51.2% in 2018, P = 0.014) and EFIE diagnoses (15% in 2010, 32.6% in 2018, P = 0.004). E. faecalis is an increasing cause of IE in our center, most likely due to an increase in the percentage of echocardiograms performed. The factors involved in clinical changes in EFIE should be thoroughly studied.

BACKGROUND: Infective endocarditis (IE) is a life-threatening disease whose prognosis is often difficult to predict based on clinical data. Biomarkers have been shown to favorably affect disease management in a number of cardiac disorders. Aims of this retrospective study were to assess the prognostic role of procalcitonin (PCT), pro-adrenomedullin (pro-ADM) and copeptin in IE and their relation with disease characteristics and the traditional biomarker C-reactive protein (CRP). METHODS: We studied 196 patients with definite IE. Clinical, laboratory and echocardiography parameters were analyzed, with a focus on co-morbidities. PCT, pro-ADM and copeptin were measured on stored plasma samples obtained on admission during the acute phase of the disease. RESULTS: Pro-ADM and copeptin were significantly higher in older patients and associated with prior chronic kidney disease. Pro-ADM was an independent predictor of hospital mortality (OR 3.29 [95%C.I. 1.04-11.5]; p = 0.042) whilst copeptin independently predicted 1-year mortality (OR 2.55 [95%C.I. 1.18-5.54]; p = 0.017). A high PCT value was strictly tied with S. aureus etiology (p = 0.001). CRP was the only biomarker associated with embolic events (p = 0.003). CONCLUSIONS: Different biomarkers correlate with distinct IE outcomes. Pro-ADM and copeptin may signal a worse prognosis of IE on admission to the hospital and could be used to identify patients who need more aggressive treatment. CRP remains a low-cost marker of embolic risk. A high PCT value should suggest S. aureus etiology.

BACKGROUND: Nationwide hospital admissions data series have contributed to a reliable assessment of the changing epidemiology of infective endocarditis, even though conclusions are not uniform. We sought to use a recent populational series to describe the temporal trends on the incidence of infective endocarditis, its clinical characteristics and outcome results, in Portugal. METHODS: A nationwide retrospective temporal trend study on the incidence and clinical characterization of patients hospitalized with infective endocarditis, between 2010 and 2018. RESULTS: 7574 patients were hospitalized with infective endocarditis from 2010 to 2018 in Portuguese public hospitals. The average length of hospitalization was 29.3 ± 28.7 days, predominantly men (56.9%), and 47.1% had between 60 and 79 years old. The most frequent infectious agents involved were Staphylococcus (16.4%) and Streptococcus (13.6%). During hospitalization, 12.4% of patients underwent heart valve surgery and 20% of the total cohort died. After a 1-year post-discharge follow-up, 13.2% of the total initial cohort had had heart valve surgery and 21.2% in total died. The annual incidence of infective endocarditis was 8.31 per 100,000 habitants, being higher in men (9.96 per 100,000 in males versus 6.82 in females, p < 0.001) and increased with age, peaking at patients 80 years old or older (40.62 per 100,000). In-hospital mortality rate significantly increased during the analyzed period, the strongest independent predictors being ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke, sepsis, and acute renal failure. Younger age and cardiac surgery had a protective effect towards a fatal outcome. CONCLUSIONS: In Portugal, between 2010 and 2018, the incidence of infective endocarditis presented a general growth trend with a deceleration in the most recent years. Also, a significant rate of in-hospital complications, a mildly lower than expected stable surgical rate and a still high and growing mortality rate were noted.

PURPOSE: Mortality in infective endocarditis (IE) is still high, and the long term prognosis remains uncertain. This study aimed to identify predictors of long-term mortality for any cause, adverse event rate, relapse rate, valvular and ventricular dysfunction at follow-up, in a real-world surgical centre. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 363 consecutive episodes of IE (123 women, 34%) admitted to our department with a definite diagnosis of non-device-related IE. Median follow-up duration was 2.9 years. Primary endpoints were predictors of mortality, recurrent endocarditis, and major non-fatal adverse events (hospitalization for any cardiovascular cause, pace-maker implantation, new onset of atrial fibrillation, sternal dehiscence), and ventricular and valvular dysfunction at follow-up. RESULTS: Multivariate analysis independent predictors of mortality showed age (HR per unit 1.031, p < 0.003), drug abuse (HR 3.5, p < 0.002), EUROSCORE II (HR per unit 1.017, p < 0.0006) and double valve infection (HR 2.3, p < 0.001) to be independent predictors of mortality, while streptococcal infection remained associated with a better prognosis (HR 0.5, p < 0.04). Major non-fatal adverse events were associated with age (HR 1.4, p < 0.022). New episodes of infection were correlated with S aureus infection (HR 4.8, p < 0.001), right-sided endocarditis (HR 7.4, p < 0.001), spondylodiscitis (HR 6.8, p < 0.004) and intravenous drug abuse (HR 10.3, p < 0.001). After multivariate analysis, only drug abuse was an independent predictor of new episodes of endocarditis (HR 8.5, p < 0.001). Echocardiographic follow-up, available in 95 cases, showed a worsening of left ventricular systolic function (p < 0.007); severe valvular dysfunction at follow-up was reported only in 4 patients, all of them had mitral IE (p < 0.03). CONCLUSIONS: The present study highlights some clinical, readily available factors that can be useful to stratify the prognosis of patients with IE.

AIM: The mortality of patients with infective endocarditis (IE) is high. The management of patients with large vegetations is controversial. This study sought to investigate the association of vegetation size on outcomes including valve destruction, embolism and mortality. METHODS AND RESULTS: One hundred and forty-two (142) patients with definite IE and transoesophageal echocardiography (TEE) imaging available for analysis were identified and data retrospectively reviewed. Vegetation length, width and area were measured. Severe valve destruction was defined as the composite of one or more of severe valve regurgitation, abscess, pseudoaneurysm, perforation or fistula. Associations with 6-month mortality were identified by Cox regression analysis. Eighty (80) (56.3%) patients had evidence of valve destruction on TEE. Vegetation length ≥10 mm and vegetation area ≥50 mm2 were significantly associated with increased risk of valve destruction, (both odds ratio OR 1.21, p=0.03 and p=0.02 respectively). Thirty-nine (39) (72.2%) patients who had an embolic event, did so prior initiation of antibiotics. Six (6)-month mortality was 18.3%. In the surgically managed group, vegetation size was not associated with mortality. In the medically managed group, vegetation area (mm2) was associated with increased mortality (HR 1.01, p<0.01) along with age (HR 1.06, p=0.03). CONCLUSION: Vegetation length ≥10 mm or area ≥50 mm2 are associated with increased risk of valve destruction. Vegetation size may also predict mortality in medically managed but not surgically managed patients with IE. Further studies to evaluate whether surgery in patients with large vegetation size improves outcomes is warranted.

BACKGROUND: Despite concerns about the burden of the bacterial and fungal infection syndromes related to injection drug use (IDU), robust estimates of the public health burden of these conditions are lacking. The current article reviews and compares data sources and national burden estimates for infective endocarditis (IE) and skin and soft-tissue infections related to IDU in the United States. METHODS: A literature review was conducted for estimates of skin and soft-tissue infection and endocarditis disease burden with related IDU or substance use disorder terms since 2011. A range of the burden is presented, based on different methods of obtaining national projections from available data sources or published data. RESULTS: Estimates using available data suggest the number of hospital admissions for IE related to IDU ranged from 2900 admissions in 2013 to more than 20 000 in 2017. The only source of data available to estimate the annual number of hospitalizations and emergency department visits for skin and soft-tissue infections related to IDU yielded a crude estimate of 98 000 such visits. Including people who are not hospitalized, a crude calculation suggests that 155 000-540 000 skin infections related to IDU occur annually. DISCUSSION: These estimates carry significant limitations. However, regardless of the source or method, the burden of disease appears substantial, with estimates of thousands of episodes of IE among persons with IDU and at least 100 000 persons who inject drugs (PWID) with skin and soft-tissue infections annually in the United States. Given the importance of these types of infections, more robust and reliable estimates are needed to better quantitate the occurrence and understand the impact of interventions.
