RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Lip investigations and characterizations in the literature are less prevalent than for skin, particularly on the topic of color diversity. However, as the consumer demand increases for a nude lip makeup result, that is, shades close to the bare lip color, the identification and modification of lip color is essential for the cosmetic industry. OBJECTIVE: The objective was to highlight lip color diversity among three ethnicities (Caucasian, African and Hispanic), through the use of a spectral color measurement device especially adapted to the lip area, and to consider lip color ethnic specificities and overlaps. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The inferior natural lip color was measured with a full-face hyperspectral imaging system, SpectraFace (Newtone Technologies, Lyon, France), on 410 healthy women aged 19 to 68 (Caucasian French, Caucasian American, African American, and Hispanic American women). A hierarchical ascending classification, was deployed to determine clusters based on the lip colorimetric parameters along two strategies to identify the best statistical analysis to preserve the lip color diversity. RESULTS: Lip color is a continuous color space, with great intra-ethnic and inter-ethnic diversity, especially for African American women in terms of chroma and lightness. Among the two strategies of data analysis, our two-step statistical clustering analysis yielded 11 groups (i.e., 11 lip tones), revealing an accurate representation of the scope of diversity, but also of the overlaps. CONCLUSION: The 11 lip tones/colors could potentially serve as target shades for the development of a more diverse and inclusive range of lip cosmetics, such as nude lipsticks.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The lack of standardization of the norms and aesthetic concept of the lower third of the face and lips creates challenges in reconstructive surgery and aesthetic procedures. A large-scale, anthropometric measurements summary poses an alternative for establishing universal patterns. METHODS: A systematic review was conducted by searching PubMed, Embase, Google Scholar and Web of Science using keywords: lip, face, aesthetics, beauty, anthropometry and Caucasian. Seventy records were included in the review and checked in detail in terms of available data. RESULTS: The study contains a meta-analysis of twelve parameters with sufficient quantitative data-lip width, nose width, facial width, lower third of the face height, midline mandible height, total height of the upper and lower lip, upper and lower vermilion height, cutaneous upper lip height and nasolabial and mentolabial angle. CONCLUSIONS: The review provides a detailed database of primary anthropometric studies of lips and perioral regions of the healthy Caucasian population. The attractiveness of the region is focused on uniformity of proportions. Notably, results acquired with different methods of measurement are not interchangeable. Despite many published anthropometric studies, systems for conducting the measurements and reporting the results are not sufficiently unified to quantitatively assess meticulous key aesthetic clinical parameters. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE I: This journal requires that authors assign a level of evidence to each article. RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: This study evaluated the influence of facial width on the perception of lip protrusion and investigated the concordance between 2-dimensional (2D) profile images and 3-dimensional (3D) video clips in assessing lip protrusion. METHODS: An Asian female standard head model was created using 3D modeling software. Eight head models were constructed by modifying the standard head model in terms of facial width (broad, neutral, and slim) and lip protrusion (retrusive, straight, and protrusive). Overall, 97 Asian raters rated the lip protrusion from the 2D profiles and 3D rotation video clips of the 9 models. RESULTS: No significant differences were found in the perception of lip protrusion in terms of sex, age, or occupation. Compared with the 2D profiles, the 3D video clips were rated as more protrusive in 8 of the 9 head models, with the retrusive broad, retrusive neutral, straight broad, and straight slim faces showing statistical significance (P <0.01). The rating is significantly higher in slim faces than in broad faces across the 3 groups of 2D profiles (P <0.01). For 3D video clips, the rating was higher in slim faces than in broad faces in all 3 groups, whereas differences were significant in the straight and protrusive groups only (P <0.01). CONCLUSIONS: In this study, 3D video clips were more sensitive to the perception of lip protrusion than were 2D profiles to some extent. The lips were rated relatively more protrusive in a slim face than in a broad face. Therefore, the relationship between facial width and lip protrusion should be considered in orthodontic treatment goals and treatment plans.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: The objective of this study was to identify the soft-tissue profile changes and the potential pretreatment cephalometric parameters that clinicians could use to predict the lip response after premolar extraction treatment in adult patients. METHODS: Pretreatment and posttreatment lateral cephalograms of 75 white patients treated with premolar extractions were analyzed. The following initial cephalometric measurements were recorded: upper and lower lip to E-plane, vermilion thickness, lip length, maxillary and mandibular incisor inclination, and mentolabial and nasolabial angle. Pretreatment and posttreatment radiographs were superimposed using the Björk structural method to record lip retraction and incisor/lip retraction ratio. Pearson correlation and Kruskal-Wallis tests were used to compare lip retraction and incisor/lip retraction ratio with the cephalometric variables. The sample was divided according to different extraction patterns. RESULTS: The mean upper and lower lip retraction values were 1.4 mm and 1.7 mm, respectively. Vermilion thickness showed a negative and statistically significant correlation (P <0.05) with lip retraction and incisor/lip retraction ratio. In addition, the mean incisor/lip retraction ratio was 61% and 98% for the upper and lower thin lip, respectively, whereas the mean incisor/lip retraction ratio was 17% and 44% for the upper and lower thick lip, respectively. The comparison among extraction patterns did not highlight any noticeable difference. CONCLUSIONS: The choice of a specific extraction pattern did not impact lip response. The vermilion thickness was the key factor influencing lip retraction: an increase in this parameter was related to a decrease in lip retraction and vice versa.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: This study aimed to clarify the structural arrangement of the orbicularis oris (OOr), the buccinator, and the other perioral muscles around the modiolus. METHODS: The perioral muscles in seventeen cadavers fixed with formalin were dissected in situ and/or in isolated muscle specimens, and their layers were reconstructed schematically upon pantomographic view of the skeleton to evaluate their actions. RESULTS: The buccinator was composed of three parts including upper and lower oblique parts in its superficial layer and a middle transverse part in its deep layer. The superior and inferior OOr were composed of an inner marginal part (IM) and an outer labial part (OL) in each. The perioral muscles as a whole were arranged in three layers. The first layer consisted of the depressor anguli oris and the OL of superior OOr connected at the modiolus in a vertical direction. The second layer consisted of the upper and inner oblique part of buccinator and a part of the OL of inferior OOr connected at the modiolus in a horizontal direction. The third layer contained the middle transverse part of buccinator continuous with the IM of both OOr and a part of the OL of inferior OOr without connection to the modiolus. CONCLUSIONS: The different arrangement of the three layers of perioral muscles around the modiolus could serve as a good basis to predict the actions of the individual perioral muscles on the movement of lips in open/close of the oral fissure and widening/narrowing of the lip width.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To examine the patterns of pretreatment facial soft tissue shape in orthodontic cases with premolar extraction using artificial intelligence (AI) and to investigate the corresponding changes. METHODS: One hundred and fifty-two patients who underwent orthodontic treatment with premolar extraction were enrolled. Lateral cephalograms were obtained before and after the treatment. For each record, the outlines of the nose-lip-chin profile and corresponding 21 cephalometric variables were extracted. The AI method classified pretreatment records into three subject groups based on the feature variables extracted from the outline. Dentoskeletal and soft tissue facial form changes observed after treatment were compared statistically (P < 0.05) between the groups using ANOVA. Multivariate regression models were used for each group. RESULTS: Group 1 (n = 59) was characterized by Class II high-angle retrognathic mandible with an incompetent lip, group 2 (n = 55) by Class I malocclusion with retruded and thin lips, and group 3 (n = 38) by Class I malocclusion with an everted superior lip before treatment. The ratios of anteroposterior soft tissue to hard tissue movements in Group 1 were 56% (r = 0.64) and 83% (r = 0.75) for the superior and inferior lips, respectively, whereas those in Group 2 were 49% (r = 0.78) and 91% (r = 0.80), and 40% (r = 0.54) and 79% (r = 0.70), respectively, in Group 3. CONCLUSIONS: The modes of facial form changes differed depending on the pre-treatment profile patterns classified by the AI. This indicates that the determination of the pre-treatment profile pattern can help in the selection of soft tissue to hard tissue movement ratios, which helps estimate the post-treatment facial profile with a moderate to high correlation.

RESUMO

Lip augmentation can correct lip asymmetries, reduce fine lines, define lip shape and Cupid's bow, and add natural fullness to the lips. Achieving a perfect result when injecting lip filler is an art that combines the desire of the patient with the skill of the practitioner and the practitioner's understanding of the surrounding anatomy. It is essential for aesthetic practitioners to prioritize open communication, provide custom-tailored treatments, and have a strong commitment to achieving natural and harmonious results. By following these principles, patients can enjoy the benefits of enhanced lips that boost their self-confidence while maintaining their unique beauty.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Lip print patterns are unique in every individual. The uniqueness of lip print pattern assists in the personal identification. The objectives of the present study were to study the different lip print patterns among the children visiting Kanti Children's Hospital, and to compare the distribution of lip print patterns based on gender and race. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 300 children visiting the Dental Outpatient Department of Kanti Children's Hospital, Kathmandu, Nepal. Convenience sampling method was used to choose the study subjects. Digital photography method was used to record the image of lips. RESULTS: The study showed 'Long vertical' (Type I) as the most frequent (41%) type of lip print pattern, whereas 'Unspecified' (Type V) was the least frequent (2.7%) type. Prevalence of 'Type I' pattern was significantly higher in males as compared to females (p=0.007) whereas prevalence of 'Type IV' pattern was significantly higher in females as compared to males (p=0.006). 'Type I' pattern was the commonest lip print pattern among both Caucasians and Mongolian, whereas 'Type V' (2%) and 'Type IV' (3.7%) were the least common lip print patterns in Caucasians and Mongolian children respectively. CONCLUSIONS: 'Long vertical' (Type I) was the most common lip print pattern among the children visiting the Dental Outpatient Department of Kanti Children's Hospital, Kathmandu, Nepal. Nevertheless, in higher or lesser numbers, all kinds of lip print patterns as described by Suzuki and Tsuchihashi were seen in the study population.

RESUMO

Upper lip lifting is a very popular procedure but there is no objective guidelines on how much skin has to be removed to obtain an optimal result. We have measured and compared the philtral height in two groups of young and old female Lebanese subjects. We have found a mean philtral height of 14.3 ± 1.9 mm in the young group and 19.8 ± 2.4 mm In the old group, with a mean philtral lengthening of 5.5 ± 2.9 mm. We suggest using these results to plan the amount of skin that has to be removed during a lip lift procedure.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The increasing number of esthetic procedures emphasizes the need for effective evaluation methods of outcomes. Current practices include the individual practitioners' judgment in conjunction with standardized scales, often relying on the comparison of before and after photographs. This study investigates whether comparative evaluations influence the perception of beauty and aims to enhance the accuracy of esthetic assessments in clinical and research settings. OBJECTIVE: To compare the evaluation of attractiveness and gender characteristics of faces in group-based versus individual ratings. METHODS: A sample of 727 volunteers (average age of 29.5 years) assessed 40 facial photographs (20 male, 20 female) for attractiveness, masculinity, and femininity using a 5-point Likert scale. Each face was digitally edited to display varying ratios in four lip-related proportions: vertical lip position, lip width, upper lip esthetics, and lower lip esthetics. Participants rated these images both in an image series (group-based) and individually. RESULTS: Differences in the perception of the most attractive/masculine/feminine ratios for each lip proportion were found in both the group-based and individual ratings. Group ratings exhibited a significant central tendency bias, with a preference for more average outcomes compared with individual ratings, with an average difference of 0.50 versus 1.00. (p = 0.033) CONCLUSION: A central tendency bias was noted in evaluations of attractiveness, masculinity, and femininity in group-based image presentation, indicating a bias toward more "average" features. Conversely, individual assessments displayed a preference for more pronounced, "non-average" appearances, thereby possibly pointing toward a malleable "intrinsic esthetic blueprint" shaped by comparative context.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: In an era where globalization and social media significantly reshape beauty standards, it is imperative to delve into the subjectivity of beauty and attractiveness. The lips, a key element in facial aesthetics, contribute significantly to the perception of attractiveness, and also have a profound impact on an individual's self-esteem. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the influence of ethnicity on the aesthetic preferences for lip characteristics, among male and female faces. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study encompassed a sample of 231 study participants (153 women and 78 men) with an average age of 23.2 ±â€¯2.8 years, representing ethnicities such as African, Caucasian, Middle Eastern, and South Asian. Participants were asked to rate a series of images showcasing various lip variants, providing insights into their aesthetic preferences. RESULTS: Demographic analysis revealed gender and ethnic variations in aesthetic preferences for all the investigated lip parameters. Women were 2.42 times more likely than men to prefer no Cupid's indentation on a female model (p = 0.0019). CONCLUSIONS: The study underscores the importance of understanding cultural influences on beauty standards and challenges the notion of a universal beauty ideal. The evolving role of social media trends, such as Cupid's bow indentation elimination, raises questions about the dynamic nature of aesthetic preferences among different ethnicities.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to develop and validate evaluation metric for an automated smile classification model termed the "smile index." This innovative model uses computational methods to numerically classify and analyze conventional smile types. METHODS: The datasets used in this study consisted of 300 images to verify, 150 images to validate, and 9 images to test the evaluation metric. Images were annotated using Labelme. Computational techniques were used to calculate smile index values for the study datasets, and the resulting values were evaluated in three stages. RESULTS: The smile index successfully classified smile types using cutoff values of 0.0285 and 0.193. High accuracy (0.933) was achieved, along with an F1 score greater than 0.09. The smile index successfully reclassified smiles into six types (low, low-to-medium, medium, medium-to-high, high, and extremely high smiles), thereby providing a clear distinction among different smile characteristics. CONCLUSION: The smile index is a novel dimensionless parameter for classifying smile types. The index acts as a robust evaluation tool for artificial intelligence models that automatically classify smile types, thereby providing a scientific basis for largely subjective aesthetic elements. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The computational approach employed by the smile index enables quantitative numerical classification of smile types. This fosters the application of computerized methods in quantifying and analyzing real smile characteristics observed in clinical practice, paving the way for a more objective evidence-based approach to aesthetic dentistry.

RESUMO

Objective: To measure and analyze upper lip morphology variation before and after the cross-arch fixed restoration of the maxillary implant-supported prostheses using cone- beam CT (CBCT) to provide an esthetic objective reference for maxillary edentulous patients. Methods: There were 32 maxillary edentulous patients selected in the Department of Dental Implantology, The Affiliated Stomatological Hospital of Nanjing Medical University from January 2010 to December 2023. The CBCT data of patients with maxillary full-arch implant-supported fixed prostheses were retrospectively collected before implantation (T0), at the time of radio-guide insertion (T1), and after final repair (T2). The length and thickness of the upper lip were measured and analyzed at each time point, and the correlation between the upper lip contour data and facial esthetic parameters was analyzed. Results: After the final prosthodontic treatment, the length of the upper lip was significantly increased from (21.72±2.84) mm to (24.98±2.93) mm (t=-8.13, P<0.001) compared with that before implant treatment. The widths of the middle and vermilion of the upper lip (Sm-Hm/Ls-UP), were reduced from (13.24±1.41), (12.81±1.67) mm to (11.36±1.67), (10.21±1.69) mm, with significant differences (t=7.79, P<0001; t=9.37, P<0.001). The lower face height (Sn-Gn) was increased from (54.52±4.95) mm to (58.70±4.42) mm, with significant differences (t=-11.05, P<0.001). However, the nasolabial angle reduced significantly from 95.35°± 7.70°to 90.53°±7.28°(t=7.68, P<0.001). The width of the middle of the upper lip with a radiation guide was (10.94±1.24) mm, and it increased significantly compared with that after the final prosthesis treatment (t=-0.76, P<0.05). The proportion of straight upper lip profiles accounted for 59% (19/32), and the proportion of concave upper lip profiles accounted for 41% (13/32) after the final prosthesis treatment. In addition, the results of correlation analysis showed that the nasolabial angle variation was weak and negatively correlated with residual bone height (r=-0.37, P=0.490). Conclusions: After the treatment of the maxillary full-arch implant-supported fixed prosthesis, the length of the upper lip increases, and the thickness of the upper lip becomes significantly thin. The maxillary full-arch implant-supported fixed prostheses support upper lips to improve the patients' side appearances.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the reliability of a face scanner in measuring the vertical dimension of occlusion (VDO). METHODS: Fully dentate volunteers (n = 20; mean-age = 30.0 ± 10.7 years) were recruited. Clinical facial measurements were obtained using a digital caliper and a face scanner (Obiscanner, Fifthingenium, Italy). The scans were imported into a mesh-processing software, and the distances were measured digitally. Measurements were obtained for each participant with the jaws positioned in maximal intercuspation (MI) and with increased vertical distances of 2, 4, and 6 mm. Vertical and horizontal measures were obtained using facial anatomical landmarks: Glabella (GL), Pronasale (PrN), Subnasale (SbN), inferior border of the right and left Alare, Labiale superius (Ls), right and left Cheilion (Ch), Soft Pogonion (SPg), right and left Tragus of the ear (Tr), for all selected vertical positions. Data analysis included intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC), pairwise comparison tests, Bland-Altman plots, and Passing-Bablok regression. RESULTS: 120 VDO measurements (clinical=60, digital=60) were recorded by two independent evaluators. Mean differences between digital and clinical measurements ranged from 0.054 ± 0.14 mm to 0.203 ± 0.13 mm. All parameters were strongly correlated (r > 0.93; p < 0.001). ICC estimates revealed excellent reliability, and the measuring procedure yielded the same results on repeated trials irrespective of the raters and measurement methods. Bland-Altman plots revealed a difference, between digital and clinical measurements, of 1.7 % for the vertical measurements. Regression analysis revealed no significant proportional difference between the two methods, so both can be used interchangeably. CONCLUSIONS: The findings of this study demonstrate that VDO can be measured accurately from face scans using 3D mesh-processing software and that even small changes in the VDO could be detected using the digital methods. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Findings provide evidence about the reliability of a digital method for jaw relation registrations and may be applied towards incorporating this method into clinical workflows for computer-aided-design/ computer-assisted-manufacturing (CAD-CAM) dentures.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: To quantify the accuracy of Dolphin Imaging software in predicting soft tissue changes of Class II Division 1 incisor relationship treated by all first premolar extraction compared with actual changes. METHODS: Pretreatment and post-treatment lateral cephalograms of 30 young adult subjects (25 females and 5 males; age range of 16 to 21 years) were imported and traced in Dolphin Imaging software (version 11.95). Tracings of actual treatment results and the Dolphin predicted treatment outcome were superimposed to calculate the prediction errors. The mean difference for the Holdaway soft tissue analysis and at each landmark was measured in both the X and Y axes. Paired t test was used to compare the statistical differences in Holdaway soft tissue analysis parameters. RESULTS: There were significant differences between the predicted and actual values in three parameters of the Holdaway soft tissue analysis (P < 0.05). The overall accuracy of estimation was better in vertical direction than horizontal. Prediction of upper and lower lip landmarks was overestimated horizontally and underestimated vertically, whereas that belonging to chin was underestimated horizontally and overestimated vertically. Soft tissue nasion and soft tissue A-point were most accurately predicted, whereas the least accuracy was found in soft tissue chin region. CONCLUSIONS: Dolphin Imaging Software (version 11.95) can be accurate enough for use in patient communication and education but should be used with caution. It is most accurate in predicting soft tissue changes in the nasion and A-point regions, but least accurate in chin region.

RESUMO

SUMMARY: Although almost all studies exclude lip conditions because they would affect furrow patterns, some authors maintain that they should be considered temporary or permanent disabilities, all of which require further research in this context. We present a study in which we associate lip conditions with lip print patterns to associate both morphological elements for fieldwork purposes. Fifty-seven women and 48 men aged between 19 and 38 years who resided in Temuco (Chile) were included. The lip conditions and their prints were recorded, and an analysis, comparison, evaluation, and verification protocol (ACE-V) for lip prints was applied. Of the participants, 27.4 % had healthy lips, while 71.7 % had some type of condition. Although patterns related to temporary and permanent lip conditions were recognized in the lip prints in a non-significant way, the diagnosis of "healthy" or "altered" lip status could be made significantly by a calibrated examiner. Although these conditions do not represent identifying variables without empirical studies to validate them, they can affect the quality of the evaluated lip print; therefore, they should be recognized during the analyses considering the prevalence of these conditions.

Introduction: the lip lift consists of surgically removing a portion of the upper lip when it is characterized as long, flat, with no definition of the filter columns, and with a reduction in the vermilion border, which happens in parallel with advancing age. Therefore, surgeons have created several techniques to provide the patient with a younger and more attractive lip. Objectives: explain the dimensions and characteristics of the lips, the indications for lip lifting, and some surgical techniques. Method: a survey was carried out in the scientific literature on the PubMed/Medline databases. The inclusion criterion adopted was articles with the full text of the study and clarity in the methodological details used. Also, a book was added to complement necessary information. The descriptors to select articles were lip lifting, lip morphology, and ideal lips. Results: aged lips tend to lose their sensuality with the lengthening of the white lip, the loss of definitions, thinning of the red lip, and the appearance of wrinkles, which demand searches for techniques that help soften these con-ditions and improve the patient's self-esteem. Conclusion: to achieve satisfactory results with this technique, the professional needs to master the knowledge about the dimensions of the lower third of the face according to age, sex, and race. Also, the professional needs to master the most effective surgical techniques and the indications according to the patient's individuality. Keywords: Lip lift. Morphology of the lips. Characteristics of young lips. Lip aging.

SUMMARY: The anatomical arrangement of the facial muscles is of considerable complexity and requires a detailed study to achieve its precise recognition. The understanding of the morphological disposition and the functionality of the angle of the mouth (Modiolus angulis oris) is of great relevance when analyzing the muscular constitution of the labial commissure, and to understand clinically the injuries of the angulus oris, what that will allow an adequate therapeutic approach, crucial for the preservation and reconstitution of facial harmony.
