RESUMO

We report a novel homozygous 49.6 kb deletion of chromosome 18q12.1 involving the last exon of DSG3 in dizygotic twins with phenotype consistent with acantholytic blistering of the oral and laryngeal mucosa (ABOLM). The twin siblings presented predominantly with friability of the laryngeal and respiratory mucosa. This is only the second report in the literature of this unusual autosomal recessive blistering disorder. The diagnosis explains the mucosal phenotype of a pemphigus-like disorder without evidence of autoimmune dysfunction. The exclusion of an autoimmune basis has management implications. The deletion also involved the DSG2 gene, which is associated with arrhythmogenic right ventricular dysplasia (ARVD). The affected siblings and heterozygous parents do not show any cardiac phenotype at this time. Functional studies would further clarify how deletions resulting in loss of function of DSG3 may cause the reported phenotypes of DSG3-related ABOLM.

OBJECTIVE: The laryngeal tissue carries most of the heat during inhalation injury. This study aims to explore the heat transfer process and the severity of injury inside laryngeal tissue by horizontally studying the temperature rise process at various anatomical layers of the larynx and observing the thermal damage in various parts of the upper respiratory tract. METHODS: The 12 healthy adult beagles were randomly divided into four groups, and inhaled room temperature air (control group), dry hot air of 80 °C (group I), 160 °C (group II), and 320 °C (group III) for 20 min, respectively. The temperature changes of the glottic mucosal surface, the inner surface of the thyroid cartilage, the external surface of the thyroid cartilage, and subcutaneous tissue were measured every minute. All animals were immediately sacrificed after injury, and pathological changes in various parts of laryngeal tissue were observed and evaluated under a microscope. RESULTS: After inhaling hot air of 80 °C, 160 °C and 320 °C, the increase of laryngeal temperature in each group was ΔT = 3.57 ± 0.25 °C, 7.83 ± 0.15 °C, 11.93 ± 0.21 °C. The tissue temperature was approximately uniformly distributed, and the difference was not statistically significant. The average laryngeal temperature-time curve showed that the laryngeal tissue temperature in group I and group II showed a trend of "first decrease and then increase", except that the temperature of group III directly increased with time. The prominent pathological changes after thermal burns mainly concluded necrosis of epithelial cells, loss of the mucosal layer, atrophy of submucosal glands, vasodilatation, erythrocytes exudation, and degeneration of chondrocytes. Mild degeneration of cartilage and muscle layers was also observed in mild thermal injury. Pathological scores indicated that the pathological severity of laryngeal burns increased significantly with the increase of temperature, and all layers of laryngeal tissue were seriously damaged by 320 °C hot air. CONCLUSIONS: The high efficiency of tissue heat conduction enabled the larynx to quickly transfer heat to the laryngeal periphery, and the heat-bearing capacity of perilaryngeal tissue has a certain degree of protective effect on laryngeal mucosa and function in mild to moderate inhalation injury. The laryngeal temperature distribution was in accordance with the pathological severity, and the pathological changes of laryngeal burns provided a theoretical basis for the early clinical manifestations and treatment of inhalation injury.

Study of vocal fold (VF) mucosal biology requires essential human vocal fold epithelial cell (hVFE) lines for use in appropriate model systems. We steadily transfected a retroviral construct containing human telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT) into primary normal hVFE to establish a continuously replicating hVFE cell line. Immortalized hVFE across passages have cobblestone morphology, express epithelial markers cytokeratin 4, 13 and 14, induced hTERT gene and protein expression, have similar RNAseq profiling, and can continuously grow for more than 8 months. DNA fingerprinting and karyotype analysis demonstrated that immortalized hVFE were consistent with the presence of a single cell line. Validation of the hVFE, in a three-dimensional in vitro VF mucosal construct revealed a multilayered epithelial structure with VF epithelial cell markers. Wound scratch assay revealed higher migration capability of the immortalized hVFE on the surface of collagen-fibronectin and collagen gel containing human vocal fold fibroblasts (hVFF). Collectively, our report demonstrates the first immortalized hVFE from true VFs providing a novel and invaluable tool for the study of epithelial cell-fibroblast interactions that dictate disease and health of this specialized tissue.

PURPOSE: To explore the role played by Glut-1 and H+/K+-ATPase in pepsin-induced, mouse laryngeal epithelial proliferation, growth, and development. METHODS: We established a mouse model of laryngopharyngeal reflux and measured Glut-1 and H+/K+-ATPase expression levels in mouse laryngeal epithelium treated with artificial gastric juice containing pepsin. RESULTS: Artificial pepsin-containing gastric juice induced significant hyperplastic changes in mouse laryngeal epithelium compared to control mice at 15, 30, and 45 days. Inhibition of Glut-1 expression by 2-DG significantly suppressed such hyperplasia compared to mice exposed to artificial gastric juice containing pepsin at 15, 30, and 45 days. After treatment with pepsin-containing artificial gastric juice, RT-PCR and Western blotting showed that the levels of Glut-1 and H+/K+-ATPase α, ß increased significantly. CONCLUSIONS: Pepsin-containing artificial gastric juice promoted mouse laryngeal epithelial hyperplasia associated with abnormal expression of Glut-1 and H+/K+-ATPase α, ß.

In the present study, we investigated the role of mechanical load as generated by amniotic fluid in the vocal fold embryogenesis. In utero, amniotic fluid flows through the laryngeal inlet down into the lungs during fetal breathing and swallowing. In a mouse model, the onset of fetal breathing coincides with epithelial lamina recanalization. The epithelial lamina is a temporal structure that is formed during early stages of the larynx development and is gradually resorbed whereby joining the upper and lower airways. Here, we show that a temporary decrease in mechanical load secondary to drainage of amniotic fluid and subsequent flow restoration, impaired timing of epithelial lamina disintegration. Moreover, re-accumulation of fluid in the laryngeal region led to VF tissue deformation triggering remodeling of the epithelium and pressure generated changes in the elastic properties of the lamina propria, as measured by atomic force microscopy. We further show that load-related structural changes were likely mediated by Piezo 1 -Yap signaling pathway in the vocal fold epithelium. Understanding the relationship between the mechanical and biological parameters in the larynx is key to gaining insights into pathogenesis of congenital laryngeal disorders as well as mechanisms of vocal fold tissue remodeling in response to mechanotransduction.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the effects of two sizes of silicone endotracheal tubes with internal diameter 26 mm (ETT26) and 30 mm (ETT30) inflated to minimum occlusive volume on tracheal and laryngeal mucosa of adult horses anesthetized for 2 hours with isoflurane. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective, randomized, blinded, crossover experimental study. ANIMALS: A total of eight healthy adult mares. METHODS: Upper airway endoscopy and ultrasound measurements of internal tracheal diameter were performed the day before anesthesia. Horses were anesthetized and orotracheally intubated with ETT26 or ETT30. Ease of intubation was scored. The cuff was inflated in 10 mL increments to produce a seal. Final volume of air used and intracuff (IC) pressure (measured by pressure transducer) were recorded. At the end of anesthesia, a manometer was used to measure IC pressure and these measurements compared against measurements from the pressure transducer. Laryngeal and tracheal mucosa were assessed via endoscopy and assigned a score 0-3 before anesthesia, and at 2 and 24 hours following extubation. RESULTS: Data are from seven horses because one horse with laryngeal hemiplegia was excluded. Mean tracheal ultrasound measurement was 3.5 ± 0.4 cm. No significant differences were noted between endotracheal tube sizes for intubation score, IC pressures, inflation volumes or tracheal or laryngeal injury scores at any time point. IC pressure measured by manometer was slightly higher than that by transducer (+1.0 ± 2.8 mmHg). CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Results identified no clear advantage of one endotracheal tube size over the other in the population of horses studied, when endotracheal intubation is properly applied and IC pressure is carefully monitored. However, given that ETT26 was associated with the highest observed IC pressures and the only observed incidents of tracheal circumferential erythema, the larger ETT30 may be the better choice in most cases where tracheal size is sufficient.

In late 2019, a novel coronavirus strain, SARS-CoV-2 (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2), also known as coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), triggered a global pandemic as the virus spread from the Wuhan Province, China, across all continents. Although infrequent, severe respiratory infection and death caused by SARS-CoV-2 is disproportionately high amongst healthcare providers such as craniofacial surgeons who work in the head and neck region. Factors this impact SARS-CoV-2 transmission include: (1) high viral loads in the mucosa of the oral and nasopharynx, (2) limited and/or imprecise disease screening/confirmation testing, (3) access to and appropriate use of personal protective equipment (PPE).

The upper airways play important roles in respiratory defensive reflexes. Although solitary chemosensory cells and chemosensory cell clusters have been reported in the laryngeal mucosa of mammalian species, the distribution and cellular morphology of chemosensory cells remain unclear. In the present study, the distribution and morphology of solitary chemosensory cells and chemosensory cell clusters were examined by immunofluorescence for GNAT3 on whole-mount preparations of the rat laryngeal mucosa. Electrophysiological experiments were performed to analyze the respiratory reflexes evoked by bitter stimuli to the laryngeal cavity. In the whole area of the laryngeal mucosa, the numbers of GNAT3-immunoreactive solitary chemosensory cells and chemosensory clusters were 421.0 ± 20.3 and 62.7 ± 6.9, respectively. GNAT3-immunoreactive solitary chemosensory cells were mainly distributed in the mucosa overlying epiglottic and arytenoid cartilage, and chemosensory clusters were mainly distributed on the edge of the epiglottis and aryepiglottic fold. GNAT3-immunoreactive solitary chemosensory cells were slender with elongated processes or had a flask-like/columnar shape. The number of GNAT3-immunoreactive cells in chemosensory clusters was 6.1 ± 0.4, ranging between 2 and 14 cells. GNAT3-immunoreactive cells in the cluster were variform and the tips of apical processes gathered at one point at the surface of the epithelium. The tips of apical cytoplasmic processes in solitary chemosensory cells and cells in the cluster were immunoreactive for espin, and faced the laryngeal cavity. Physiological experiments showed that the application of 10 mm quinine hydrochloride to the laryngeal cavity decreased respiratory frequency. The present results revealed the chemosensory field of the larynx and the morphological characteristics of the laryngeal chemosensory system for respiratory depression.

1. There is growing evidence to suggest that the cells in the maculae flavae are tissue stem cells of the human vocal fold and maculae flavae are a candidate for a stem cell niche. 2. The latest research shows that the cells in the human maculae flavae are involved in the metabolism of extracellular matrices that are essential for viscoelasticity in the human vocal fold mucosa as a vibrating tissue and are considered to be important cells in the growth, development, and aging of the human vocal fold mucosa. 3. Recent evidence has indicated that the cells including vocal fold stellate cells in the maculae flavae of the human vocal fold mucosa are a functionally heterogenous population. 4. The cells in the human maculae flavae possess proteins of all three germ layers, indicating that they are undifferentiated and have the ability of multipotency. 5. The cell division in the human adult maculae flavae is reflective of asymmetric self-renewal, and cultured cells form a colony-forming unit. Therefore, the phenomenon gives rise to the strong possibility that the cells in the human maculae flavae are putative stem cells. 6. Recent research has suggested that the cells in the human maculae flavae arise from the differentiation of bone marrow cells via peripheral circulation. 7. Cultured cell populations in the human maculae flavae are roughly divided into three groups by morphological features: cobblestone-like polygonal cells, vocal fold stellate cell-like cells, and fibroblast-like spindle cells. However, at the present state of our investigation, it is difficult to clarify the stem cell system and hierarchy of stem cells in the human maculae flavae. 8. Subpopulations of cells in the maculae flavae proliferate extremely slowly and retain stem cell properties. 9. Tension caused by phonation seems to regulate the behavior and heterogeneity of the cells (mechanical regulation) in the maculae flavae of the human vocal fold. 10. The putative stem cells in the maculae flavae appear to differentiate into other kind of cells in the surrounding tissue.

BACKGROUND: Removal of Reinke's edema may result in moderate to large-sized mucosal defect on the vocal fold, which heals by secondary intention. Microsuturing this defect may lead to primary wound healing with fastened recovery and less scar, but costs extra time and effort. Exploring methods that can shorten microsuture time is helpful for the wider application of this technology. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective. METHODS: 57 patients with Reinke's edema, who were admitted from November 2010 to June 2018, were enrolled as research subjects for the retrospective analysis. 27 patients were the knot pusher group (from November 2010 to March 2015), and 30 patients were the two-handed tying group (from April 2015 to June 2018). Evaluation indicators include the number of knots, the average time for suturing and tying the knot for each patient, and the occurrence of complications, subjective and objective voice assessments. RESULTS: All patients underwent successful operation. The average time for making knots in the knot pusher group and two-handed tying group was 668.40 ± 173.73 s and 328.73 ± 121.0 s, respectively, and there was a statistically significant difference between the two groups (p < 0.001). No significant difference was noted in the mucosal avulsion, overall incidence of complications between the groups, and no significant difference was found between the two groups in terms of the preoperative and 3-month postoperative subjective and objective indicators. CONCLUSION: Microsuturing of Reinke's edema microflaps using the two-handed tying technique can achieve the similar effect with the knot pusher method, and save operation time while the surgeon is well trained. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this paper is to investigate electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) from the otorhinolaryngologic point of view. METHODS: The authors searched Central Database of Kirikkale University Library, Google, PubMed, and Proquest and Google Scholar. RESULTS: An electronic cigarette or e-cigarette is a battery-powered device that vaporizes a liquid, generally including nicotine. Nowadays, e-cigarettes are used for smoking cessation or to reduce the consumption of conventional tobacco cigarettes. First generation e-cigarette devices were similar to conventional tobacco cigarettes in terms of shape and size and expressed as "cigalikes." Differently from traditional cigarettes in which tobacco is burned to generate smoke, electronic cigarettes contain a tank filled with liquid. It was found that e-cigarette liquids contained different types of chemical compounds which were either previously known carcinogens or probably prove to be carcinogenic to humans in the near future. It seems that the use of electronic cigarette does not harm the oral cells. However, the use of e-cigarette for 4 weeks led to metaplasia and hyperplasia of the laryngeal mucosa in rats. Furthermore, e-ciagarettes produce some adverse effects on the nasal mucosa, supressing the immune system. CONCLUSION: It should not be considered that e-cigarettes are safer unless their effects on the mucosa of the ear, nose, and throat are more precisely clarified.

1. The human vocal fold is a vibrating tissue and vascular structures in organs which have the capacity to vibrate require a specific structure suitable for vibration. 2. The structure of the blood vessels is unique at the vocal fold edge as a vibrating tissue, where only small vessels, including arterioles, venules, and capillaries, are present. The capillaries are distributed in the superficial layer of the lamina propria (Reinke's space). 3. The blood vessels enter the vocal fold edge from the anterior or posterior end of the membranous vocal fold and run essentially parallel to the vocal fold edge. 4. Many pericytes can be seen around the capillaries in the human vocal fold mucosa. The cell bodies of the pericytes attach to capillary endothelial cells, and the branching processes encircle the capillaries and attach to the capillary endothelial cells at the tips. The processes of pericytes are in close contact with endothelial cells, sharing a common basement membrane with them. The tips of the processes form intercellular tight junctions with endothelial cells. 5. The pericytes in the vocal fold mucosa appear to provide mechanical support and protection to the capillary walls, particularly during phonation. The pericytes also appear to regulate the diameter of the capillary during and after phonation. Pericytes are also thought to be critical cells in vascular biology and angiogenesis, especially in revascularization following vocal fold tissue injury. 6. At birth, pericytes have already encircled the capillaries in the newborn vocal fold mucosa. The pericytes appear ready to provide support and protection of the blood vessels just after birth. 7. Vascular structures and their permeability are related to the specific structures and specific diseases of the human vocal fold mucosa as a vibrating tissue.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the early histopathological changes of gastroesophageal reflux and irradiation on laryngeal mucosa in rats. STUDY DESIGN: Animal study. SETTING: Experimental animal laboratory, tertiary referral center. SUBJECT AND METHOD: Twenty-four adult female Wistar Albino rats were grouped as: control (n = 6), reflux and irradiation (n = 10), and irradiation (n = 8). Rats were operated to create a reflux model 30 days before irradiation. Ionizing radiation was administered in a single fraction of a 20 Gy to the larynx. Laryngeal tissue samples were taken at the 4th day of irradiation and all specimens underwent histopathological examination. RESULTS: Edema and vascular dilation in lamina propria were higher in the reflux and irradiation, and irradiation groups than control group. Inflammation was higher in the reflux and irradiation group than the control group. Inflammation in squamous epithelium was higher in the reflux and irradiation and irradiation groups compared to the control group. Inflammation in the squamous epithelium of the irradiation group was higher than the reflux and irradiation group. In the respiratory tract epithelium, inflammation was higher in the reflux and irradiation group; additionally, a significant loss of cilia was present in the reflux and irradiation and irradiation groups while pseudostratification was higher in the reflux and irradiation group. CONCLUSION: Ionizing radiation-induced inflammation may increase on previously inflammated area due to gastroesophageal reflux. Therefore, it may be helpful to investigate and treat the reflux in laryngeal cancer patients that will receive ionizing radiation.

We present a form for the collection of basic laryngostroboscopic findings, which provides for the evaluation of the classical six parameters codified by Hirano (symmetry and periodicity of glottic vibration, glottic closure, profile of vocal fold edge, amplitude of vocal fold vibration, mucosal wave) and six other parameters which we have included in the form for an essential and complete laryngostroboscopic evaluation (supraglottic framework behaviour, seat of phonatory vibration, vocal fold morphology and motility, level of the vocal fold, stops of vocal fold mucosa vibration). This form was created in 2002 during the elaboration of the protocol for the assessment of dysphonia of the Italian Society of Phoniatrics and Logopedics, which follows the guidelines of the European Laryngological Society published in 2001. We used this form for 15 years in our daily laryngological practice with great satisfaction. We propose a more detailed version of this form, which provides for drawings which show the various videolaryngostroboscopic findings, helping the laryngologist in the collection of videolaryngostroboscopic examination basic findings.

The objective of the present study was to elaborate the therapeutic algorithm for the treatment of laryngomycosis. We have examined a total of 430 patients suffering from chronic laryngitis including 100 ones (23.2%) having the fungal flora. Mycosis was diagnosed by the microscopic study of the stained preparations with the application of various techniques; moreover, cultivation in elective nutrient media was used. The yeast-like fungi of the genus Candida were identified in 98 (98%) and mold fungi of the genus Aspergillus in the remaining 2 (2%) patients. All these 100 patients were given the antifungal treatment. 98 of them presenting with candidal laryngitis were allocated to three groups. Group A was comprised of 33 patients who received the local treatment alone, group B contained 31 patients given only systemic therapy, and group C included 34 patients undergoing the combined treatment with the use of the medications possessed of both the local and systemic actions. The best clinical results were obtained in the patients of the latter group in which the therapeutic efficiency proved to be as high as 79.4%. It is concluded that all the patients suffering from laryngomycosis are in need of the combined treatment designed to eradicate the causative agent, restore the vocal function, and achieve the stable remission of the chronic inflammatory process in the larynx. The combined treatment with the antimycotic medications exhibiting both the general systemic and local activities during 3 weeks appears to be the optimal therapeutic modality for the management of laryngomycosis. Of special importance is the dynamic follow-up of the treated patients including the control examinations in the course of the treatment (days 7, 14, and 21) to be followed by the mycological study after the termination of therapy and its repetition every 3 months during the subsequent period.

BACKGROUND: Airway guidelines recommend the use of ultrasound to localize the cricothyroid membrane prior to airway manipulation in difficult airways. In this study, we aimed to determine the amount of training anesthesia trainees would need to achieve competence in bedside ultrasound to identify the cricothyroid membrane. METHODS: This is a prospective non-randomized cohort study in the Department of Anesthesia at Mount Sinai Hospital (Toronto, Ontario, Canada). Following institutional ethics approval, six anesthesia trainees consisting of four residents and two fellows underwent a 2-h training session on neck ultrasound to identify neck landmarks and the cricothyroid membrane. The trainees had no previous airway ultrasound experience. One-two weeks later, each trainee performed consecutive neck ultrasound scans on 20 healthy volunteers to identify the cricothyroid membrane. Cumulative sum (CUSUM) learning curves were constructed for each trainee. Primary outcome was the number of ultrasound examinations required to achieve competence, defined as 90% success rate in a series of 20 ultrasound scans. Secondary outcomes were the overall success rate, the time (sec.) required to perform the task, and 3-month skills assessment. RESULTS: CUSUM analysis showed four trainees achieved competence with a mean [range] success rate of 94.0% [90-100%] and a median [range] number of attempts of 14 [9-18]. Two trainees did not achieve competence, but obtained a success rate of 75.0 and 80.0% each. Overall (number of attempts) success rate was 88.3% (106/120) with a mean (SD) time of 36.9 (9.0) sec. Three months after training, ultrasound of five consecutive neck scans showed a mean success rate of 86.7% (26/30) and mean (SD) time of 47.7 (16.0) sec. CONCLUSIONS: After a short 2-h training session, most anesthesia trainees (n = 4/6) achieved competence in ultrasound-identification of the cricothyroid membrane with less than 20 scans in a mean time less than 60 s., and that they remain reasonably competent 3 months later. The learning curve for ultrasound identification of the cricothyroid membrane seems to be short even without prior airway ultrasound experience.

1. There is growing evidence to suggest that the cells in the maculae flavae are tissue stem cells of the human vocal fold and maculae flavae are a candidate for a stem cell niche. 2. The latest research shows that the cells in the human maculae flavae are involved in the metabolism of extracellular matrices that are essential for the viscoelasticity in the human vocal fold mucosa as a vibrating tissue, and considered to be important cells in the growth, development, and aging of the human vocal fold mucosa. 3. The cells in the human maculae flavae possess proteins of all three germ layers, indicating they are undifferentiated and have the ability of multipotency. 4. The cell division in the human adult maculae flavae is reflective of asymmetric self-renewal and cultured cells form a colony-forming unit. Therefore, the phenomenon gives rise to the strong possibility that the cells in the human maculae flavae are tissue stem cells. 5. Recent research suggests that the cells in the human maculae flavae arise from the differentiation of bone marrow cells via peripheral circulation. 6. The hyaluronan concentration in the maculae flavae is high and contains cells which possess hyaluronan receptors, indicating that the maculae flavae are hyaluronan-rich matrix, which is required for a stem cell niche. 7. A proper microenvironment in the maculae flavae of the human vocal fold mucosa is necessary to be effective as a stem cell niche maintaining the stemness of the contained tissue stem cells.

BACKGROUND: Lymphatic metastasis contributes to the poor prognosis of laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC). This study aimed to investigate the roles of two metastasis suppressor genes, KAI1 and nm23, in lymphangiogenesis and lymph metastasis of LSCC. METHODS: A total of 45 LSCC patients were enrolled in this study. The positive expression rates of KAI1 and nm23 protein were detected via immunohistochemistry in 45 LSCC and 22 normal laryngeal mucosa adjacent to LSCC. Micro-lymphatic vessel density (MLVD) was detected via immunohistochemistry with the specific antibody D2-40. Associations between KAI1 and nm23 expression and clinical characteristics of LSCC were then evaluated. RESULTS: The positive expression rates of KAI1 and nm23 were significantly lower in LSCC than normal laryngeal mucosa (P < 0.05). Significantly lower positive rates of KAI1 and nm23 were found in LSCC with lymphatic metastasis than those without lymphatic metastasis (P < 0.05), whereas MLVD was negatively correlated with the expression of KAI1 and nm23 (P < 0.05). However, no significant associations were found between KAI1 and nm23 expression and clinical characteristics of LSCC (sex, age, disease position, differentiation, and T-stage). CONCLUSIONS: Both KAI1 and nm23 can inhibit lymphangiogenesis and lymphatic metastasis in LSCC.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Autoimmune bullous disease (ABD) is induced by autoantibodies against cell adhesion molecules, and blistering may occur on the mucous membranes of the eyes, nose, mouth, oral cavity, laryngopharynx, and esophagus. Endoscopic prevalence and features of ABD-associated esophageal lesions are not well known. We conducted the present study to assess the endoscopic prevalence of ABD-associated mucosal lesions. METHODS: Endoscopic prevalence of mucosal lesions, particularly laryngopharyngeal and esophageal lesions, was used as the primary endpoint to assess the significance of upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, and clinical and endoscopic features were secondary endpoints. RESULTS: Of 123 ABD patients, 50.4% had apparent oral or laryngopharyngeal lesions and 30.8% had laryngopharyngeal lesions. Esophageal lesions were detected through normal observation in 16.8% of affected patients, whereas 40.6% exhibited epidermolysis or blood blisters by mechanical inducement, regardless of esophageal mucosal lesion detection by normal observation. Additionally, 56.0% exhibited the Nikolsky sign with mechanical inducement. Of the 123 patients, 29.2% did not have exposed skin lesions. Of these patients, 77.7% had oral cavity or laryngopharyngeal lesions, 36.1% had esophageal lesions, and 58.3% exhibited the Nikolsky sign on esophageal mucosa. CONCLUSION: It is important to determine the endoscopic characteristics and findings of ABD. ABD can be suspected from endoscopic findings.
