RESUMO
A gradual increase in histamine content with simultaneous elevation in the histaminase activity were observed in many tissues of guinea-pigs and cats in dynamics of tetanic intoxication. A universal accumulation of serotonin at early steps of intoxication with subsequent decrease in its content were also found in development of severe generalized tetanus. At the same time, in several tissues the inhibition of glycolysis and impairment in electrolyte balance were observed. Artificial pulmonary ventilation was accompanied only by partial compensation in impairment of the histamine and electrolytes metabolism. The metabolic impairments studied possess the complex genesis, they are not related solely to the effect of hypoxic factor and may form the basis for impairment in the excitability of various structures, for alteration in their energy provision and for operation in dynamics of tetanic intoxication.

In rabbits injected i.m. with 1 MLD of tetanus toxin, the levels of the serum cholinesterase and of the erythrocytic cholinesterase were determined twice every day, during the course of the intoxication, until the death of the animals. The levels of the serum cholinesterase were decreasing day by day, while these of the erythrocytic cholinesterase did not show any significant variation. These results are strictly comparable to those one may observe in organophosphorus poisoning.

This paper describes the correlation between serum cholinesterase levels and the severity and course of tetanus in a young patient. The diagnostic and prognostic value and significance of this enzyme as well as the therapeutic value of cholinesterase-restoring agents in tetanus are discussed.

The results of measurements made in two cases of tetanus suggest that the level of tetanus antibody in the blood cannot be used as a diagnostic test for the disease. The investigation also indicated that an attack of tetanus does not result in a rise in tetanus antitoxin antibody levels. This confirms the opinion that tetanus is not an immunising disease. In the cases described, the pseudocholinesterase level was not of diagnostic value.

Serial estimation of muscle and serum adenosine triphosphatase (ATPase) activity was performed in 16 healthy control patients and 32 cases with tetanus. There was no significant difference due to age and sex in muscle and serum ATPase activity between the normal and tetanus cases. Tetanus patients showed a marked increase in muscle and serum ATPase activity as compared to normal. The ATPase activity increased with the severity of convulsion and disease. There was increased mortality in tetanus patients having higher values of muscle and serum ATPase.
