RESUMO

Objective: This study aimed to explore the effects of individualized nursing in patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMD). Methods: From June 2019 to April 2021, 80 patients with TMD were admitted to the First Affiliated Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University. Among them, 40 patients (control group, CG) received routine nursing and 40 patients (experimental group, EG) received individualized nursing. Functional exercise compliance, pain score, maximum mouth opening, nursing satisfaction questionnaire, self-rating anxiety scale, and self-rating depression scale were investigated. Results: From June 2019 to April 2021, 81 patients with TMD were admitted to the First Affiliated Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University. Among them, 40 patients (control group) received routine care and 41 patients (experimental group) received individual care. There were no significant differences in mouth opening and pain score between the two groups before surgery (P > 0.05), but there were significant differences in mouth opening and pain score between the two groups 3 weeks after surgery. Patients' anxiety and depression were assessed by the SAS and SDS scores. Before nursing, the control group and experimental group (P < 0.05) had no significant difference. After nursing, the score of both groups decreased (P < 0.05). However, the score was lower in the experimental group, compared to the control group (P < 0.01). Conclusion: In summary, individualized nursing can improve patients' physical condition and reduce negative emotions and complications. In light of this, the study needs further verification by a large sample randomized controlled trial.

RESUMO

This study aims to describe the characteristics of patients at a temporomandibular dysfunction and orofacial pain outpatient clinic and to discuss the insertion of nursing care in this service. A questionnaire based on the steps of the Nursing Process was applied to a sample of 150 patients attended from May to August 2003. Patients from both genders and aged between 12 and 77 years old were sequentially admitted to the study. Population data revealed that a majority was female (85%); the predominant age was from 21 to 60 years old (76%); only 3% did not present any formal instruction. The nursing role introduced in this multidisciplinary clinic created conditions to assess demographic and epidemiologic data, identify user needs and develop self-care abilities and attitudes. The proposed model made is possible to organize data collection and promote research.

RESUMO

Despite the fact that temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction has traditionally been considered an adult disorder, there is research to document that signs and symptoms of TMJ dysfunction are prevalent in the younger population as well. Although some aspects manifest equally in both adults and children, there are unique qualities that are more relevant to pediatrics. Knowledge of the etiology, prevalence, and its clinical components may assist pediatric primary care providers in screening and caring for children with TMJ.

RESUMO

Temporomandibular joint arthroscopy provides a minimally invasive surgical means of gaining access to the TMJ. It offers valuable diagnostic information and options in the treatment of TMJ dysfunction. Recovery and healing are more rapid, thereby reducing patient discomfort and rehabilitation time. It is estimated that there is an 85% to 90% success rate of this procedure. Patients with TMJ problems resulting from an emotional component can be helped, but their pain may persist because of related muscle tension.
