RESUMO

The use of semiconductor nanocrystals in scalable quantum technologies requires characterization of the exciton coherence dynamics in an ensemble of electronically isolated crystals in which system-bath interactions are nevertheless strong. In this communication, we identify signatures of Fano-like interference between excitons and photocarriers in the coherent two-dimensional photoluminescence excitation spectral lineshapes of mixed lead-halide perovskite nanocrystals in dilute solution. Specifically, by tuning the femtosecond-pulse spectrum, we show such interference in an intermediate coupling regime, which is evident in the coherent lineshape when simultaneously exciting the exciton and the free-carrier band at higher energy. We conclude that this interference is an intrinsic effect that will be consequential in the quantum dynamics of the system and will thus dictate decoherence dynamics, with consequences in their application in quantum technologies.

BACKGROUND: Approximately 90% of children with cancer live in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs), where 5-year survival is lower than 20%. Treatment-related mortality in high-income countries is approximately 3-5%; however, in LMICs, treatment-related mortality has been reported in up to 45% of children with cancer. This study aimed to systematically explore the burden of treatment-related mortality in children with cancer in LMICs and to explore the association between country income level and treatment-related mortality. METHODS: For this systematic review and meta-analysis we identified articles published between Jan 1, 2010, and June 22, 2021, describing treatment-related mortality in paediatric patients (aged 0-21 years) with cancer in LMICs. We searched PubMed, Trip, Web of Science, Embase, and the WHO Global Metric Index databases. The search was limited to full-text articles and excluded case reports (<10 patients) and haematopoietic stem-cell transplantation recipients. Two reviewers independently screened studies for eligibility, extracted data from included publications, and evaluated data quality. Random and mixed-effects models were used to estimate treatment-related mortality burden and trends. The Cochran-Q statistic was used to assess heterogeneity between studies. This study is registered on PROSPERO (CRD42021264849). FINDINGS: Of 13 269 identified abstracts, 501 studies representing 68 351 paediatric patients with cancer were included. The treatment-related mortality estimate was 6·82% (95% CI 5·99-7·64), accounting for 30·9% of overall mortality (4437 of 14 358 deaths). Treatment-related mortality was inversely related to country income. Treatment-related mortality was 14·19% (95% CI 9·65-18·73) in low-income countries, 9·21% (7·93-10·49) in lower-middle-income countries, and 4·47% (3·42-5·53) in upper-middle-income countries (Cochran-Q 42·39, p<0·0001). In upper-middle-income countries, the incidence of treatment-related mortality decreased over time (slope -0·002, p=0·0028); however, outcomes remained unchanged in low-income (p=0·21) and lower-middle-income countries (p=0·16). INTERPRETATION: Approximately one in 15 children receiving cancer treatment in LMICs die from treatment-related complications. Although treatment-related mortality has decreased in upper-middle-income countries over time, it remains unchanged in LMICs. There is an urgent need for targeted supportive care interventions to reduce global disparities in childhood cancer survival. Spectral line shapes provide a window into the local environment coupled to a quantum transition in the condensed phase. In this paper, we build upon a stochastic model to account for non-stationary background processes produced by broad-band pulsed laser stimulation, as distinguished from those for stationary phonon bath. In particular, we consider the contribution of pair-fluctuations arising from the full bosonic many-body Hamiltonian within a mean-field approximation, treating the coupling to the system as a stochastic noise term. Using the Itô transformation, we consider two limiting cases for our model, which lead to a connection between the observed spectral fluctuations and the spectral density of the environment. In the first case, we consider a Brownian environment and show that this produces spectral dynamics that relax to form dressed excitonic states and recover an Anderson-Kubo-like form for the spectral correlations. In the second case, we assume that the spectrum is Anderson-Kubo like and invert to determine the corresponding background. Using the Jensen inequality, we obtain an upper limit for the spectral density for the background. The results presented here provide the technical tools for applying the stochastic model to a broad range of problems.

In order to find molecules of natural origin with potential biological activities, we isolate and synthesise compounds with agarofuran skeletons (epoxyeudesmanes). From the seeds of Maytenus disticha and Maytenus magellanica we obtained six dihydro-ß-agarofurans, and by means of the Robinson annulation reaction we synthesised five compounds with the same skeleton. The structures were established on the basis of NMR, IR, and MS. The evaluated compounds showed inhibitory activity on the acetylcholinesterase enzyme and on the COX enzymes. Compound 4 emerged as the most potent in the acetylcholinesterase inhibition assay with IC50 17.0 ± 0.016 µM on acetylcholinesterase (AChE). The compounds evaluated were shown to be selective for AChE. The molecular docking, and the propidium displacement assay suggested that the compounds do not bind to the active site of the enzyme AChE, but rather bind to the peripheral anionic site (PAS) of the enzyme, on the other hand, the natural compound 8, showed the best inhibitory activity on the COX-2 enzyme with an IC50 value of 0.04 ± 0.007 µM. The pharmacokinetic profile calculated in silico using the SWISSADME platform shows that these molecules could be considered as potential drugs for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases such as AD.

Cyclopeptide alkaloids with different biological activities are present in plants of the family Rhamnaceae. Plants of this family grow in a symbiotic relationship with aerobic Gram-positive actinomycetes belonging to the genus Frankia. This goal of this research was a study of the comparative profile of alkaloids present in Discaria chacaye and to establish a connection between the presence or absence of Frankia sp. and the alkaloids. In addition, insecticidal activities of the alkaloidal extract were examined. A total of 24 alkaloids were identified, of which 12 have a benzylisoquinoline skeleton, 9 were cyclopeptides, 2 isoquinolines, and 1 aporphine. The presence of cyclopeptide alkaloids is associated with Frankia nodules in the plant root. The alkaloid extracts showed insecticidal activity with mortality dose-dependence and LD50 values between 44 to 71 µg/mL.

INTRODUCTION: Plants from Amaryllidaceae family are of interest since they produce a particular type of alkaloid useful for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases of the central nervous system, such as Galanthamine. Given the low content of these secondary metabolites in the plant, it is necessary to study mechanisms to increase the productivity of them. OBJECTIVE: To obtain fast qualitative and quantitative analysis of the alkaloids and extend the understanding of biosynthesis and metabolism in these kinds of plants. Furthermore, establish a reliable, simple and fast analytical method for the in vitro callus culture of vegetative organs for Rhodophiala pratensis species. METHODS: The alkaloids composition of the callus culture of R. pratensis were analysed by gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS). RESULTS: A methodology for the qualitative and quantitative analysis of the alkaloids present in fresh callus culture of this wild plant species was established. The analysis showed alternation in the alkaloids type ratio and number of compounds between wild bulbs, in vitro bulbs and callus. It was possible to identify 24 alkaloids from a pool of 60 signals whose fragmentation pattern corresponds to the alkaloids of Amaryllidaceae plants. Together with the aforementioned, the amount and type of alkaloid present in the plant material obtained by in vitro culture of R. pratensis was determined in the same way. The results show the high biosynthetic potential of in vitro grown bulbs and callus tissue that are able to produce significant amounts of pharmacologically relevant alkaloids from R. pratensis in various proportions that depend on the culture conditions such as supplementation with growth substances. The in vitro grown bulbs produce an alkaloidal extract that contain a 52.6% w/w of alkaloids. CONCLUSION: This study allowed the alkaloid content in callus culture of R. pratensis to be found by means of GC-MS. These results allowed a relationship between the type of growth regulator and the type of alkaloids found to be established. Finally, we can say that the results achieved to state that the production of alkaloids using different combinations of growth regulators could be directed during in vitro micropropagation from provided plant material.

The Chilean plants Discaria chacaye, Talguenea quinquenervia (Rhamnaceae), Peumus boldus (Monimiaceae), and Cryptocarya alba (Lauraceae) were evaluated against Codling moth: Cydia pomonella L. (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) and fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster (Diptera: Drosophilidae), which is one of the most widespread and destructive primary pests of Prunus (plums, cherries, peaches, nectarines, apricots, almonds), pear, walnuts, and chestnuts, among other. Four benzylisoquinoline alkaloids (coclaurine, laurolitsine, boldine, and pukateine) were isolated from the above mentioned plant species and evaluated regarding their insecticidal activity against the codling moth and fruit fly. The results showed that these alkaloids possess acute and chronic insecticidal effects. The most relevant effect was observed at 10 µg/mL against D. melanogaster and at 50 µg/mL against C. pomonella, being the alteration of the feeding, deformations, failure in the displacement of the larvae in the feeding medium of D. melanogaster, and mortality visible effects. In addition, the docking results show that these type of alkaloids present a good interaction with octopamine and ecdysone receptor showing a possible action mechanism.

OBJECTIVES: It is currently recommended that after return of spontaneous circulation following cardiac arrest, fever should be prevented using TTM through a servo-controlled system. This technology is not yet available in many global settings, where manual physical measures without servo-control is the only option. Our aim was to compare feasibility, safety and quality assurance of servo-controlled system versus no servo-controlled system cooling, TTM protocols for cooling, maintenance and rewarming following return of spontaneous circulation after cardiac arrest in children. DESIGN: Prospective, multicenter, nonrandomized, study. SETTING: PICUs of 20 hospitals in South America, Spain, and Italy, 2012-2014. PATIENTS: Under 18 years old with a cardiac arrest longer than 2 minutes, in coma and surviving to PICU admission requiring mechanical ventilation were included. METHODS: TTM to 32-34°C was performed by prospectively designed protocol across 20 centers, with either servo-controlled system or no servo-controlled system methods, depending on servo-controlled system availability. We analyzed clinical data, cardiac arrest, temperature, mechanical ventilation duration, length of hospitalization, complications, survival, and neurologic outcomes at 6 months. PRIMARY OUTCOME: feasibility, safety and quality assurance of the cooling technique and secondary outcome: survival and Pediatric Cerebral Performance Category at 6 months. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: Seventy patients were recruited, 51 of 70 TTM (72.8%) with servo-controlled system. TTM induction, maintenance, and rewarming were feasible in both groups. Servo-controlled system was more effective than no servo-controlled system in maintaining TTM (69 vs 60%; p = 0.004). Servo-controlled system had fewer temperatures above 38.1°C during the 5 days of TTM (0.1% vs 2.9%; p < 0.001). No differences in mortality, complications, length of mechanical ventilation and of stay, or neurologic sequelae were found between the two groups. CONCLUSIONS: TTM protocol (for cooling, maintenance and rewarming) following return of spontaneous circulation after cardiac arrest in children was feasible and safe with both servo-controlled system and no servo-controlled system techniques. Achieving, maintaining, and rewarming within protocol targets were more effective with servo-controlled system versus no servo-controlled system techniques.

INTRODUCTION: Talguenea quinquinervia has been used in folk medicine and to dye wool, and the main constituents are alkaloids and triterpenes. Identification of these type of compounds in this specie is a necessary step to understand the biological properties. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the relationship between the chemical composition of root from T. quinquinervia and its insecticidal properties using liquid chromatography electrospray ionisation tandem mass spectrometry (LC-ESI-MS/MS). METHODS: Alkaloids were extracted using Soxhlet extraction with methanol. Total extract was partitioned at pH 2 and 12 to enrich alkaloid constituents and to remove interferences. The separation of alkaloids in the Talguenea extract was performed on a C18 column using gradient elution and their tandem mass spectra were obtained by quadrupole time-of-flight tandem mass spectrometry (QTOF-MS/MS) to perform accurate mass measurements of fragment ions for the alkaloid constituents. RESULTS: Several types of alkaloids were separated and identified by LC-ESI-MS/MS. The structural assignment of individual alkaloids was performed based on convergence of MS/MS spectral data, pH partitioning behaviour, LC retention behaviour, and accurate mass measurements. The pH partition of the extract provided structural information about unknown alkaloids extracted from T. quinquinervia. A total of 20 compounds were identified and tentatively characterised, and of these 15 alkaloids were reported for the first time in the investigated T. quinquinervia. CONCLUSION: The chemical profiling of alkaloids in T. quinquinervia with different origins was performed for the first time and provided diagnostic ions for diverse alkaloids in T. quinquinervia. Insecticidal activity observed can be explain by the presence of alkaloid and pentacyclic triterpenes on the fractions assayed.

While plants of the genus Dyssodia are used by man to a certain extent, few phytochemical and pharmacological studies have been performed with species of this genus. D. tagetiflora is an endemic plant of Mexico and has been used as fodder. The aim of this research was to isolate and identify the main bioactive components and evaluate the insecticidal, antioxidant, genotoxic and cytoprotective activities of D. tagetiflora. The isolated substances included an essential oil composed of six monoterpenes, and extracts containing two flavonols, three flavonol-glycosides and four thiophenes. The compounds were characterized using spectroscopic and spectrometric methods, including GC/MS, MS and NMR. The essential oil showed insecticidal activity against Drosophila melanogaster larvae. The methanolic extract of D. tagetiflora (DTME) had strong antioxidant activity against DPPH and ABTS radicals; DTME showed no evidence of genotoxic or cytotoxic effects. In contrast, DTME showed a cytoprotective effect attenuating the formation of H2 O2 -induced micronuclei in Vicia faba roots. This report is the first to describe the phytochemical and biological activity of D. tagetiflora.

In this study, we report a patient with pulmonary atresia with intact ventricular septum (PA/IVS), confluent pulmonary arteries supplied by an arterial duct, and chromosome 22q11.2 microdeletion. The 22q11.2 deletion syndrome has been associated with anomalies of the outflow tracts, such as tetralogy of Fallot with either pulmonary stenosis or atresia, but we are aware of a solitary case described with pulmonary atresia when the ventricular septum is intact. The presence of genetic malformations can have long-term co-morbidities. By describing our patient, we aim to create awareness of this rare association.

Estimating the difficulty of a decision is a fundamental process to elaborate complex and adaptive behaviour. In this paper, we show that the movement time of behaving monkeys performing a decision-making task is correlated with decision difficulty and that the activity of a population of neurons in ventral Premotor cortex correlates with the movement time. Moreover, we found another population of neurons that encodes the discriminability of the stimulus, thereby supplying another source of information about the difficulty of the decision. The activity of neurons encoding the difficulty can be produced by very different computations. Therefore, we show that decision difficulty can be encoded through three different mechanisms: 1. Switch time coding, 2. rate coding and 3. binary coding. This rich representation reflects the basis of different functional aspects of difficulty in the making of a decision and the possible role of difficulty estimation in complex decision scenarios.

Various types of motion introduced into a solution can affect, among other factors, the alignment and positioning of molecules, the agglomeration of large molecules, oxidation processes, and the production of microparticles and microbubbles. We employed turbulent mixing vs. laminar flow induced by a vortex vs. diffusion-based mixing during the production of Viscum album Quercus L. 10-3 following the guidelines for manufacturing homeopathic preparations. The differently mixed preparation variants were analyzed using the droplet evaporation method. The crystalline structures formed in dried droplets were photographed and analyzed using computer-supported image analysis and deep learning. Computer-supported evaluation and deep learning revealed that the patterns of the variant succussed under turbulence are characterized by lower complexity, whereas those obtained from the vortex-mixed variant are characterized by greater complexity compared to the diffusion-based mixed control variant. The droplet evaporation method could provide a relatively inexpensive means of testing the effects of liquid flow and serve as an alternative to currently used methods.

Bound and unbound Frenkel-exciton pairs are essential transient precursors for a variety of photophysical and biochemical processes. In this work, we identify bound and unbound Frenkel-exciton complexes in an electron push-pull polymer semiconductor using coherent two-dimensional spectroscopy. We find that the dominant A0-1 peak of the absorption vibronic progression is accompanied by a subpeak, each dressed by distinct vibrational modes. By considering the Liouville pathways within a two-exciton model, the imbalanced cross-peaks in one-quantum rephasing and nonrephasing spectra can be accounted for by the presence of pure biexcitons. The two-quantum nonrephasing spectra provide direct evidence for unbound exciton pairs and biexcitons with dominantly attractive force. In addition, the spectral features of unbound exciton pairs show mixed absorptive and dispersive character, implying many-body interactions within the correlated Frenkel-exciton pairs. Our work offers novel perspectives on the Frenkel-exciton complexes in semiconductor polymers.

Exciton-exciton annihilation is a ubiquitous nonlinear dynamic phenomenon in materials hosting Frenkel excitons. In this work, we investigate the nonlinear exciton dynamics of an electron push-pull conjugated polymer by fluence-dependent transient absorption and excitation-correlation photoluminescence spectroscopy, where we can quantitatively show the latter to be a more selective probe of the nonlinear dynamics. Simulations based on a time-independent exciton annihilation model show a decreasing trend for the extracted annihilation rates with excitation fluence. Further investigation of the fluence-dependent transients suggests that the exciton-exciton annihilation bimolecular rates are not constant in time, displaying a t-1/2 time dependence, which we rationalize as reflective of one-dimensional exciton diffusion, with a diffusion length estimated to be 9 ± 2 nm. In addition, exciton annihilation gives rise to a long-lived species that recombines on a nanosecond time scale. Our conclusions shed broad light onto nonlinear exciton dynamics in push-pull conjugated polymers.

BACKGROUND: Apomixis is an alternative route of plant reproduction that produces individuals genetically identical to the mother plant through seeds. Apomixis is desirable in agriculture, because it guarantees the perpetuation of superior genotypes (i.e. heterotic hybrid seeds) by self-seeding without loss of hybrid vigour. The Paspalum genus, an archetypal model system for mining apomixis gene(s), is composed of about 370 species that have extremely diverse reproductive systems, including self-incompatibility, self-fertility, full sexual reproduction, and facultative or obligate apomixis. Barriers to interspecific hybridization are relaxed in this genus, allowing the production of new hybrids from many different parental combinations. Paspalum is also tolerant to various parental genome contributions to the endosperm, allowing analyses of how sexually reproducing crop species might escape from dosage effects in the endosperm. SCOPE: In this article, the available literature characterizing apomixis in Paspalum spp. and its use in breeding is critically reviewed. In particular, a comparison is made across species of the structure and function of the genomic region controlling apomixis in order to identify a common core region shared by all apomictic Paspalum species and where apomixis genes are likely to be localized. Candidate genes are discussed, either as possible genetic determinants (including homologs to signal transduction and RNA methylation genes) or as downstream factors (such as cell-to-cell signalling and auxin response genes) depending, respectively, on their co-segregation with apomixis or less. Strategies to validate the role of candidate genes in apomictic process are also discussed, with special emphasis on plant transformation in natural apomictic species.

INTRODUCTION: Monitoring PK/PD of vancomycin with basal and peak serum levels and the area under the curve of drug exposure 24 h/MIC (ABC 24 h/MIC) could optimize the management of children. OBJECTIVE: To study the PK of vancomycin in children hospitalized in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), assessing PK/PD parameters withABC24 h/MIC. METHODS: Retrospective, descriptive study in the PICU (Hospital Luis Calvo Mackenna) between January 2008-March 2010. We included children < 18 years who required antimicrobial treatment with vancomycin for suspected/confirmed staphylococcal infection using a dose of 40 mg/k/day. Plasmatic levels were performed one hour postinfusion and 30 min prior to the next dose. The following PK/PD parameters were calculated: vancomycin clearance, elimination rate constant, volume of distribution, half-life (T1/2) and ABC 24 h/ MIC. RESULTS: We enrolled eighty-four children. According to ABC 24 h/MIC obtained, 54% (45/84) of children reached an optimal level (> 400 mg*hr/L). Based on the traditional PK/PD parameters, 49% of cases (41/84) presented a basal level of vancomycin in the therapeutic range (5-15 µg/mL) and of those, only 39% (16/41) had a ABC 24 h/MIC over 400 mg*h/L. DISCUSSION: Based on our results, children admitted to PICU could be exposed to sub therapeutic doses of vancomycin. We recommend to implement tailored antimicrobial treatment monitoring vancomycin PK/PD parameters.

Understanding leaf generation dynamics, their seasonal changes, and their responses to nitrogen fertilization (NF) is key to improving pasture utilization efficiency. The objectives of this research were to determine structural and morphogenetic variables underlying changes in herbage mass on a set of Paspalum notatum genotypes. Ten P. notatum genotypes were evaluated in experimental plots following a completely randomized block design under a split-plot arrangement for two N-rates during four periods. Increased herbage mass (HM) after N-fertilization was explained by a higher tiller density (TD) (41.8%) and tiller weight (TW) (22.1%). The increment of TW after NF was due to the increase in leaf blade length (LBL) and width (LBW). During the flowering season, NF increases the reproductive tiller density by 262.5%. Seasonal variation in HM was mainly explained by changes in LBL that modified TW. Morphogenetic traits differed between genotypes of different growth habits; therefore, different management practices are suggested. The average increase in leaf elongation rate in response to NF was about 36.7%, generating longer leaves despite reductions in leaf elongation time (LET). The depletion in LBL and consequently in TW and HM during the autumn was attributed to the reduction in LET.

The tetraploid germplasm of Paspalum contains a large diversity that can be used to generate better forages. The objective was to evaluate a group of Paspalum notatum and Paspalum simplex apomictic hybrids for a set of agronomic traits and apomixis expressivity. Forage yield, cold tolerance, winter regrowth, and seed yield were evaluated. The expressivity of apomixis was evaluated in P. simplex hybrids by flow cytometry. Progeny testing with molecular markers was used to determine the genotypic variability in the progeny. Differences within P. notatum and P. simplex hybrids were observed for all traits, and some of them were superior in comparison with the controls. The accumulated forage yield during three years was 988 g m-2 in the P. notatum hybrids, whereas, in P. simplex, the average forage yield per harvest (40 days of regrowth) was 180 g m-2. In P. simplex, the apomixis expressivity varied between 0 and 100%, and 65% of the hybrids showed high apomixis expressivity (superior to 70%). The genotypic mean homogeneity in the progeny was 76% and 85% in P. notatum and P. simplex, respectively. The generation of hybrids with high apomixis expressivity that combine good agronomic performance and homogeneity in the offspring is possible in tetraploid P. notatum and P. simplex.
