RESUMO

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of cigarette smoke on the surface roughness and color stability of three different soft denture liners. METHODS: Three commonly used commercially available, chair-side, long-term vinyl polysiloxane soft denture liners were used for this study [Sofreliner Tough (S) Soft, Silagum Comfort Soft Relining, and GC Reline Soft\. Thirty disk-shaped specimens of each material, with a diameter of 25 mm and thickness of 2 mm, were fabricated. Initial color and surface roughness readings were recorded. The specimens of each group were randomly divided into two groups (n= 15): the control group (C) and the study group (S). The control group specimens were stored in distilled water and the study group samples were exposed to cigarette smoke in a custom-made smoking chamber. Final color and surface roughness readings were recorded. A single operator performed all the measurements. The differences in color and surface roughness were calculated. Statistical analysis was performed using two-way ANOVA, post-hoc Tukey test, and paired t-test. For all the analyses, a P< 0.05 was regarded as statistically significant. RESULTS: After exposure to smoke, all groups showed a significantly perceptible color change (ΔE > 3.7). The greatest color change was seen in the Silagum group (ΔE= 8.94 ± 0.42), followed by the Sofreliner group (ΔE= 7.85 ± 0.47), with the least change in the GC reline group (ΔE= 3.87 ± 0.46). The mean color change after smoke exposure showed a statistically significant difference among all three study groups. The highest change in surface roughness was observed in the Silagum group (ΔR= 0.687 ± 0.14) followed by the GC reline group (ΔR= 0.265 ± 0.12), with the least change in the Sofreliner group (ΔR= 0.238 ± 0.06). There was a statistically significant difference between each group before and after exposure to smoke. Exposure to cigarette smoke caused significant changes in the color and surface roughness of all three soft denture liners tested in this study. The extent of these changes varied for each material. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Proper selection of soft denture liners is essential to avoid premature replacement, due to esthetic and hygiene reasons in cigarette smokers.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: High prevalence of tooth wear (TW) worldwide makes it important to assess its level in different populations. In developing countries, a shift towards geriatric population makes the evaluation of this condition even more relevant. Most indices for tooth wear are full mouth indices, which make mass population screening challenging. The objective of this study was to establish whether part-mouth recordings using selective teeth can provide similar sensitivity of the modified tooth wear index. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was carried out over 40 working days on 400 dentate individuals aged 14-70 years, having at least 16 scorable teeth. Firstly, full mouth tooth wear of study population was recorded and categorized into four groups based on severity and extent of tooth wear. Following this, group wise data extraction was done using the full mouth scores and six different types of part-mouth analyses was done to arrive at the system which provides the best sensitivity. These part-mouth recordings should be specific such that it can differentiate to the same groups of tooth wear in the reduced data as well. Data were analyzed by means of SPSS version 21.0 (P<0.05). RESULTS: In 83%, at least one tooth had the exposed dentine. Part-mouth recording using "12 anterior teeth" as index teeth showed a high level of sensitivity (87.8%) than others for measuring tooth wear data. CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of tooth wear is high and "the part-mouth recording applied to the 12 anterior teeth" is a faster and reliable method in large population surveys for measuring tooth wear.

RESUMO

Ionic and metal toxicity in plants is still a global problem for the environment, agricultural productivity and ultimately poses human health threats when these metal ions accumulate in edible organs of plants. Metal and ion transport from cytosol to the vacuole is considered an important component of metal and ion tolerance and a plant's potential utility in phytoremediation. Finger millet (Eleusine coracana) is an orphan crop but has prominent nutritional value in comparison to other cereals. Previous transcriptomic studies suggested that one of the calcium/proton exchanger (EcCAX3) is strongly upregulated during different developmental stages of spikes development in plant. This finding led us to speculate that high calcium accumulation in the grain might be because of CAX3 function. Moreover, phylogenetic analysis shows that EcCAX3 is more closely related to foxtail millet, sorghum and rice CAX3 protein. To decipher the functional role of EcCAX3, we have adopted complementation of yeast triple mutant K677 (Δpmc1Δvcx1Δcnb1), which has defective calcium transport machinery. Furthermore, metal tolerance assay shows that EcCAX3 expression conferred tolerance to different metal stresses in yeast. The gain-of-function study suggests that EcCAX3 overexpressing Arabidopsis plants shows better tolerance to higher concentration of different metal ions as compared to wild type Col-0 plants. EcCAX3-overexpression transgenic lines exhibits abundance of metal transporters and cation exchanger transporter transcripts under metal stress conditions. Furthermore, EcCAX3-overexpression lines have higher accumulation of macro- and micro-elements under different metal stress. Overall, this finding highlights the functional role of EcCAX3 in the regulation of metal and ion homeostasis and this could be potentially utilized to engineer metal fortification and generation of stress tolerant crops in near future.

RESUMO

The study aims to systematically review the available literature to evaluate the changes in oral microbiota in patients after bariatric surgery (BS) and correlates these alterations in microorganisms with common oral manifestations. Relevant Electronic databases were systematically searched for indexed English literature. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA) guidelines were followed for framework designing, application, and reporting of the current systematic review. The focused PICO question was: "Is there any change in oral microbiota (O) of patients (P) who underwent BS (I) when compared with non-BS groups (C)?' Seven articles were selected for qualitative synthesis. On application of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) quality assessment tool, six studies were found to be of fair quality and one was of good quality. All the seven included studies evaluated the effect of BS on oral microbiota in humans. The outcomes of this review suggest that considerable changes take place in oral microbiota after BS which can be correlated with common oral manifestations. These changes are mainly due to the indirect effect of BS and may vary with the individuals. Due to variations in the included studies, it is difficult to proclaim any persistent pattern of oral microbiota found after BS.

RESUMO

Complications can occur anytime during pregnancy and childbirth. Pregnancies associated with high-risk factors have a higher-than-normal risk for fetomaternal complications. Bhagwan Mahavir hospital is a public sector hospital catering to low-risk and high-risk pregnant women (PW) in the labour room (LR)). The obstetrics and gynaecology team observed that at times the LR team failed to identify high-risk pregnancy (HRP) during admission in LR and to manage complications timely and efficiently. Therefore, the team started a quality improvement (QI) project in January 2019 with the aim to admit preidentified HRP in LR from existing 0% to 80% in 3 months. The QI team followed the point-of-care quality improvement methodology to conduct this improvement process. They identified HRP in the outpatient department (OPD) during their antenatal care (ANC) visits, mentioned an HRP number on their ANC cards, and did risk stratification with yellow and red stickers into moderate and severe HRP respectively. Preidentified HRP were attended, admitted and managed on priority in the LR. The team achieved its aim in the ninth week of the QI initiative and sustaining to date. The team also measured and analysed the type of HRP identified in OPD, complications occurring around the process of childbirth in LR, maternal near-miss, maternal death and PW referred out from LR. They observed a 6.5%-point reduction (68.93%) in the median complication rate of major life-threatening complications following this improvement process. This new intervention facilitated the team in early initiation of management of HRP in OPD, their triaging in LR, preparedness towards managing complications, involvement of support staff, PW and their relatives in the patient care, and redistribution of human resources according to priority area. The lessons learnt are generalisable and can be used in other facilities with similar settings.

RESUMO

The aim and objective of this article is to analyze the published literature on the replacement time of ocular prostheses in children. A systematic search of Indexed English literature up to November 31, 2020, was conducted. Data from PubMed, Scopus, and Cochrane library were searched for relevant manuscripts. Predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria were used by assessors, who inspected 910 manuscripts and selected 7 manuscripts, after analyzing their full texts. Because of the constant growth of the orbital socket in children, the ocular prosthesis has to be replaced till the growth of the orbit is complete. Custom ocular prosthesis requires recurrent relining or replacement, in growing children. The rate of relining or replacement of the prosthesis varies according to the growth of the orbit. Children with ocular prostheses should be appointed biannually or quarterly for routine examination. Yearly replacement or relining of the prosthesis should be conducted. Various factors, like patient comfort, age, signs, and clinical assessment, should be evaluated before relining or replacing the old prosthesis. RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To meet the needs of society, it is obligatory to provide standardized skill training to undergraduate students in dental colleges. Surveys related to teaching curriculum are valuable means to evaluate education across the country. The aim of this study was to find the trends in the undergraduate teaching curriculum, by determining the differences in the teaching methods and principles of fabrication of removable partial dentures in dental colleges in Saudi Arabia and to compare these with the curriculum of North American dental schools and Turkish dental schools. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An online survey was conducted in 23 dental colleges of Saudi Arabia. Descriptive data analysis was performed to synopsize the information. RESULTS: Eighteen out of 23 (78.23%) dental colleges of Saudi Arabia answered the questionnaire; 88.9% of the colleges follow the practice of using custom trays for making final impressions; and 44.4% of the colleges use only polyvinyl siloxane for making final impressions. Semiadjustable articulators were commonly used for mounting study casts (61.1%) and master casts (66.6%). An in-house production laboratory is present in 72.2% of the colleges. Cobalt-chromium alloy is used in 94.4% of the colleges for the framework. A set protocol for postinsertion adjustment visits is followed in 94.4% of the colleges. CONCLUSIONS: Dental colleges of Saudi Arabia have similar standards of removable partial denture education at the undergraduate level, with variations in a few aspects. Removable partial denture teaching programs of Saudi Arabian dental colleges are comparable to similar programs in dental schools of the United States and Turkey.

RESUMO

AIM: To study the prevalence of orofacial manifestations in leukemic children undergoing treatment and to correlate these manifestations with various stages of chemotherapy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A prospective noninvasive study comprising 43 acute lymphocytic leukemic pediatric patients at various stages of therapy. They were examined on day of their each blood examination, and lesions were recorded on a self-designed pro forma. A total of 133 observations were recorded by a single observer. The treatment was divided into the phase of induction, consolidation, maintenance, and relapse. RESULTS: The data were analyzed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 10.1. There were 24 males and 19 females in this study, aged between 3 and 13 years. The common oral lesions seen were dental caries, lymphadenopathy (86.04%), pallor (65.11%), ulcers (13.95%), mucositis (16.27%), gingival enlargement, hemorrhages (20.93%), candidiasis, herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection, xerostomia (44.18%), paresthesia, and tooth mobility. Herpes simplex virus infection was seen only during induction and consolidation phases. Ulcers were seen during all phases of therapy. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Orofacial manifestations may be seen as the first sign of leukemia and a dentist may play a significant role in the diagnosis of the disease per se. This study highlights not only about commonly occurring lesions but also their variation during various phases of therapy. To the best of our knowledge, no study has such an extensive reporting of orofacial manifestations of acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) patients under treatment. How to cite this article: Aggarwal A, Pai KM. RESUMO

UNLABELLED: Idiopathic cervical resorption is a rare form of external resorption, usually with no external signs, and can be misdiagnosed as dental caries or other types of tooth resorption. Here we report a case in which, during routine radiography, an asymptomatic lower right molar presented with a radiolucency at the cervical region, with no obvious aetiologic factor identified. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: This paper emphasizes the aetiopathogenesis and differential diagnosis of this rare and asymptomatic form of pathologic resorption, which can be encountered in dental practice.
