RESUMO

We report the development of a novel portable and low-cost laser induced plasma spectroscopy (LIPS) system and describe the application method for quantitative characterisation of quaternary copper alloy artefacts. The device was carefully calibrated and phenomenologically characterised using a set of reference samples. The reliability of the quantitative measurement of the depth profile and bulk compositions was assessed through crossed comparisons with traditional analytical techniques. Finally, the LIPS system was applied to investigate a museum figurine of unknown origin composed of several pieces, which is representative of a typical authentication problem.

RESUMO

Drops of water-in-fluorocarbon emulsions have great potential for compartmentalizing both in vitro and in vivo biological systems; however, surfactants to stabilize such emulsions are scarce. Here we present a novel class of fluorosurfactants that we synthesize by coupling oligomeric perfluorinated polyethers (PFPE) with polyethyleneglycol (PEG). We demonstrate that these block copolymer surfactants stabilize water-in-fluorocarbon oil emulsions during all necessary steps of a drop-based experiment including drop formation, incubation, and reinjection into a second microfluidic device. Furthermore, we show that aqueous drops stabilized with these surfactants can be used for in vitro translation (IVT), as well as encapsulation and incubation of single cells. The compatability of this emulsion system with both biological systems and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) microfluidic devices makes these surfactants ideal for a broad range of high-throughput, drop-based applications.

RESUMO

We have tested a new kind of Fabry-Perot long-baseline optical resonator proposed to reduce the thermal noise sensitivity of gravitational wave interferometric detectors--the "mesa beam" cavity--whose flat top beam shape is achieved by means of an aspherical end mirror. We present the fundamental mode intensity pattern for this cavity and its distortion due to surface imperfections and tilt misalignments, and contrast the higher order mode patterns to the Gauss-Laguerre modes of a spherical mirror cavity. We discuss the effects of mirror tilts on cavity alignment and locking and present measurements of the mesa beam tilt sensitivity.

RESUMO

The Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory has performed a third science run with much improved sensitivities of all three interferometers. We present an analysis of approximately 200 hours of data acquired during this run, used to search for a stochastic background of gravitational radiation. We place upper bounds on the energy density stored as gravitational radiation for three different spectral power laws. For the flat spectrum, our limit of omega0 < 8.4 x 10(-4) in the 69-156 Hz band is approximately 10(5) times lower than the previous result in this frequency range.

RESUMO

Arteriovenous fistula formation is a rare complication of percutaneous femoral vein cannulation for hemodialysis. Symptoms and physical findings may be elusive and the lesion can proceed unnoticed for extended periods of time. This complication is easily managed with surgical repair following rapid clinical and angiographic diagnosis. It is the purpose of this paper to report a case of delayed arteriovenous fistula formation 7 months following percutaneous insertion of an acute hemodialysis catheter into the femoral vein.
