Theoretically, a positive relation is expected between skin temperature and the percutaneous penetration of topically applied substances. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the influence of the temperature on the in vitro percutaneous penetration of dihydrotestosterone. Hairless rat skin was mounted in static diffusion cells placed in a water bath at different temperatures (28.6, 35.1 and 38.2 degrees C, respectively). Different vehicles were tested as well as the addition of penetration promoting molecules such as oleic acid and limonene. A saline buffer was used as the receptor phase. Penetration through the skin was evaluated by means of scintillation counting of the radiolabelled dihydrotestosterone. Experiments were followed for a period of 29 h. The total amount of penetrant, dihydrotestosterone, as well as the flux, were calculated from these kinetics. Our results demonstrate a temperature effect with the highest penetration at 38.2 degrees C. The vehicle was also found to influence the penetration of dihydrotestosterone in a significant way. Furthermore, limonene presented better penetration promoting properties compared with oleic acid.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Two types of skin reflectance instruments are available nowadays for the determination of skin color: a tristumulus colorimeter (Chromameter from Minolta) using the CIE L*a*b* color system and the narrow-band simple reflectance meters (DermaSpectrometer from Cortex and Mexameter from Courage-Khazaka) using the erythema/melanin indices. The purpose of this study was to compare the capabilities of the three instruments (sensitivity, repeatability and correlation) in vitro and in vivo. METHODS: Comparative color measurements were carried out first in vitro on standardized color charts and subsequently in vivo on different skin areas in human volunteers. Skin color changes induced by various physico-chemical treatments were also quantitatively evaluated with the three instruments. RESULTS: The in vitro and in vivo repeatabilty as well as the sensitivity of the three instruments are rather good. Erythema and skin blanching could be readily quantified by the increase of the a* parameter and of the erythema indices of the simple reflectance meters. Natural UV tanning and artificial chemical tanning could be measured by the decrease of L* and increase of b* and of the melanin indices. CONCLUSION: The Chromameter and the two narrow-band reflectance instruments were able to characterize skin color and to quantify small skin color changes. Moderate to high significant linear correlations could be established between the CIE L*a*b* color parameters and the erythema/melanin indices.

Surface EMG (SEMG) has been used frequently to study motion techniques or skills, body positions, material or equipment used, training-methodology and learning processes in sports and ergonomics. Little if any information is available on the effect of the geographical environment on the neuromuscular control of an athlete or workman during his/her performance or effort. Motions were chosen in Alpine skiing and cycling. Thirty-one certified ski instructors and twelve professional road cyclists participated in the study of geographical variance and its impact on muscle activity. SEMG was measured from the agonists and antagonists of the upper- and lower limb. Skiers were measured on downhill slopes ranging from 19 to 51% while the cyclists performed with different saddle positions on 2, 7 and 12% slope inclinations, respectively. Verification of the variation of muscular intensity (IEMG) over the slope inclination during a simulated giant slalom indicated that the muscular activity increased with increasing slope angle and decreased with decreasing slope angle, while heart rate measured with short-range radio telemetry increased at a constant rate between start and finish independent of the geographical variations. In a direct descent on different slopes % levels the integrated EMG is well related to the inclination (r=0.82) confirming the findings of the giant slalom. In cycling we found that, regardless of the pelvis position, the muscular intensity of lower limb muscles increased with increasing slope inclination, while the muscular intensity of the arms decreased with the same increasing slope inclination. In addition the decreased intensity of the arm muscles remained significantly higher with the pelvis (saddle) fully forward. The geography of the terrain did influence the neuromuscular work and therewith probably the performance also. The influence however, varies with specific circumstances and is coupled with items of variability of the equipment used and the body regions involved.

During routine anatomic dissection of the lower extremities of a 67-year-old male body, a supernumerary ishiocrural muscle was observed. This supernumerary muscle had similarities to a rare variant of the semimembranous muscle. On the left side it arose from the lateral dorsal side of the femur between the short head of the biceps femoris muscle and the origin of the adductor magnus muscle. It inserted on the medial condyle deep to the normal insertion of the semimembranous at the posterior aspect of the articular capsule. This muscle can be regarded either as a short deep semimembranous muscle (M. semimembranosus profondus) or as a short belly of a semitendinous biceps as known in birds. The muscle was situated closely to the vessels and nerves of the popliteal region. On the right side a similar but somewhat fainter muscle was observed whose origin emanated from the fascia of the adductor magnus muscle. The muscle probably has no major clinical importance but might be important to the surgeon who has to intervene in the popliteal region.

Epidemiological studies on vegetarians indicate that appropriately planned vegetarian diets are associated with certain health benefits, which may lower mortality and morbidity. A healthy lifestyle, such as regular physical activity and avoidance of harmful practices, such as smoking and heavy drinking, could also influence these positive health-related outcomes in vegetarians. This study reports BMI, smoking and drinking habits, engagement in physical activity, medication use and subjective health perception in a vegetarian population (women: n = 206, mean age 37.0 +/- 12.3 years; men: n = 120, mean age 42.3 +/- 15.9 years) as compared with a reference Belgian population (women: n = 4993, mean age 49.8 +/- 18.0 years; men: n = 4666, mean age 48.0 +/- 17.1 years). When considering the vegetarian group as a whole, the vegetarians had a lower mean BMI compared with the reference population (respectively 22.1 +/- 3.1 kg/m2 compared with 24.6 +/- 4.8 kg/m2 for women (p < 0.001) and respectively 22.6 +/- 3.6 kg/m2 compared with 25.7 +/- 4.0 kg/m2 for men (p < 0.001)). Vegetarians smoked less than subjects of the reference group (13.5% compared with 28.5% respectively; p < 0.001). During weekdays the percentage of subjects consuming alcoholic drinks in the two populations was comparable (32.8 in the vegetarian and 35.8 in the reference population; p = 0.159). During the weekend, more subjects of the reference population drank alcohol compared with the vegetarian subjects (70.2% vs. 58.6% respectively; p = 0.026). More vegetarians were involved in intensive physical activity (over 4 h per week) compared with the reference population (36.8% vs. 17.3% respectively; p < 0.001), while fewer vegetarians were involved in moderate physical activity (up to 4 h per week) compared with subjects of the reference group (28.2% and 51.0% respectively; p < 0.001). Percentages of subjects involved in no physical activity were comparable in both groups (vegetarians 34.9 vs. reference subjects 31.8; p = 0.625). Use of prescribed medication was lower among the vegetarians (25.5% compared with 47.3% in the reference population; p < 0.001), while use of non-prescribed drugs was comparable between both groups (34.1% in the vegetarian group and 28.2% in the reference group; p = 0.580). More vegetarian subjects perceived their health to be good to very good compared with the subjects of the reference population (90.4% vs. 77.2% respectively; p < 0.001). The significant difference for the BMI values when comparing the vegetarian males and females with the reference population cannot be completely explained by the evaluated lifestyle characteristics. However, the lower BMI values in vegetarians are in agreement with the literature.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: It was the aim of this study to carry out a comparative evaluation in vitro on standardized color charts and in vivo on healthy subjects using the Visi-Chroma VC-100, a new imaging tristimulus colorimeter and the Minolta Chromameter CR-200 as a reference instrument. The Visi-Chroma combines tristimulus color analysis with full color visualization of the skin area measured. The technical performances of both instruments were compared with the purpose of validating the use of this new imaging colorimeter in dermatocosmetic research. METHODS: In vitro L*a*b* color parameters were taken with both instruments on standardized color charts (Macbeth and RAL charts) in order to evaluate accuracy, sensitivity range and repeatability. These measurements were completed by in vivo studies on different sites of human skin and studies of color changes induced by topical chemical agents on forearm skin. The accuracy, sensitivity range and repeatability of measurements of selected distances and surfaces in the measuring zone considered and specific color determinations of specific skin zones were also determined. RESULTS: The technical performance of this imaging colorimeter was rather good, with low coefficients of variation for repeatability of in vitro and vivo color measurements. High positive correlations were established in vitro and in vivo over a wide range of color measurements. The imaging colorimeter was able to measure the L*a*b* color parameters of specific chosen parts of the skin area considered and to measure accurately selected distances and surfaces in the same skin site considered. CONCLUSION: These comparative measurements show that both instruments have very similar technical performances and that high levels of correlation were obtained in vitro and in vivo using the L*a*b* color parameters. In addition, the Visi-Chroma presents the following improvements: 1) direct visualization and recording of the skin area considered with concomitant color measurements; 2) determination of the specific color parameters of skin areas chosen in the total measuring area; and 3) accurate determination of selected distances and surfaces in the same skin areas chosen.
