RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Most of the research focused on mortality and neglected functional outcome in older patients admitted to intensive care unit (ICU). AIMS: The aim of this study is evaluating functional outcome in older patients admitted to ICU. METHODS: A cross-sectional study of 203 elderly patients admitted to Geriatric ICU in Ain Shams University Hospitals and followed for 90 days after ICU discharge to track their functional level and other adverse outcomes. RESULTS: The mean age for the cohort was 72.6 ± 8.8. Seventy-three patients survived after 3 months (36%). Only 42 patients out of 73 survivors maintained the same level of functions (58%). Factors related to functional decline were Charlson Comorbidity Index and infections acquired within 3 months after discharge. ICU scores, like APACHE and SAPS II scores were not effective in predicting functional outcomes. CONCLUSIONS: Comorbidity burden and infections acquired within 3 months after discharge are important determinants of long-term functional level after ICU admission.

RESUMO

Finding an optimal solution for emerging cyber physical systems (CPS) for better efficiency and robustness is one of the major issues. Meta-heuristic is emerging as a promising field of study for solving various optimization problems applicable to different CPS systems. In this paper, we propose a new meta-heuristic algorithm based on Multiverse Theory, named MVA, that can solve NP-hard optimization problems such as non-linear and multi-level programming problems as well as applied optimization problems for CPS systems. MVA algorithm inspires the creation of the next population to be very close to the solution of initial population, which mimics the nature of parallel worlds in multiverse theory. Additionally, MVA distributes the solutions in the feasible region similarly to the nature of big bangs. To illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, a set of test problems is implemented and measured in terms of feasibility, efficiency of their solutions and the number of iterations taken in finding the optimum solution. Numerical results obtained from extensive simulations have shown that the proposed algorithm outperforms the state-of-the-art approaches while solving the optimization problems with large feasible regions.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To demonstrate safety and efficacy of using different generations of softer Amplatzer™ devices for ventricular septal defect (VSD) closure to avoid serious complications at follow-up. BACKGROUND: Transcatheter closure of perimembranous ventricular septal defects (PmVSD) is a well-established procedure; however, it is associated with unacceptable incidence of complete heart block. Great advantages have been achieved by using softer devices for VSD transcatheter closure. The first and second generation of Amplatzer™ occluders (AVP II, ADO, and ADO II) seem to offer a safe and attractive alternative for this procedure. These devices can be delivered using either an arterial (retrograde) or venous (prograde) approach. METHODS AND RESULTS: Patients with congenital PmVSD who underwent transcatheter closure using ADO, ADO II, and AVP II devices were included. Primary end point was to determine efficacy and safety of these generations of devices and to determine the incidence of complications at follow-up (complete AV block and aortic/tricuspid/mitral regurgitation). One hundred and nineteen patients underwent VSD closure at a median age of 5 years (8 months-54 years). During the catheterization, there were only minor complications and at follow-up of 36 ± 25.7 months (up to 99 months), the closure rate was high of 98.3% and freedom from AV block was 100%. CONCLUSIONS: The use of softer Amplatzer™ devices is a good alternative to achieve PmVSD closure safely with no risk of AVB during the procedure or at midterm follow-up.

RESUMO

Gentamicin (GNT) is a potent aminoglycoside antibiotic widely used to treat life-threatening bacterial infections. We aim to investigate the potential protective effect of ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) against GNT-induced nephrotoxicity. In this study, 24 male Wistar rats were used and randomly divided into four groups of six animals each. Control group received 0.5% carboxymethyl cellulose orally for 15 days, GNT group received GNT 100 mg/kg/day i.p. for 8 days, UDCA group received UDCA orally for 15 consecutive days at a dose of 60 mg/kg/day suspended in 0.5% carboxymethyl cellulose and UDCA-pretreated group received UDCA orally for 7 days then co-administered with GNT i.p. for 8 days at the same fore-mentioned doses. Serum levels of kidney function parameters (urea, creatinine, uric acid and albumin) were measured. Renal tissues were used to evaluate oxidative stress markers; malonaldehyde (MDA), reduced glutathione (GSH) and the anti-oxidant enzyme superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities and nuclear factor kappa light-chain enhancer of activated B cells (NF-κB) and kidney injury molecule-1 (KIM-1) mRNA levels. Immunohistochemical expression of endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) and caspase-3 and histological and ultrastructural examination were performed. Treatment with GNT increased the serum levels of renal function parameters and renal MDA, NF-κB and KIM-1 mRNA levels, while it decreased GSH and SOD activities. Marked immunohistochemical expression of caspase-3 was observed after GNT administration while it decreased eNOS expression. Histological and ultrastructural alterations were also evident in renal corpuscles and tubules. In contrast, pretreatment with UDCA reversed changes caused by GNT administration. These results suggest that UDCA ameliorates GNT-induced kidney injury via inhibition of oxidative stress, inflammation and apoptosis.

RESUMO

Pseudo-Grignard reagents PhLnI (Ln=Yb, Eu), readily prepared by the oxidative addition of iodobenzene to ytterbium or europium metal at -78 °C in tetrahydrofuran (THF) or 1,2-dimethoxyethane (DME), react with a range of bulky N,N'-bis(aryl)formamidines to generate an extensive series of LnII or more rarely LnIII complexes, namely [Eu(DippForm)I(thf)4 ]⋅thf (1), [{EuI2 (dme)2 }2 ] (2), [Eu(XylForm)I(dme)2 ]⋅0.5 dme (3 a), [Eu(XylForm)I(dme)(µ-dme)]n (3 b), [{Eu(XylForm)I(µ-OH)(thf)2 }2 ] (4), [Yb(DippForm)I(thf)3 ]⋅thf (5 a), [Yb(DippForm)I2 (thf)3 ]⋅2 thf (5 b), [{Yb(MesForm)I(thf)2 }2 ] (6), [{Yb(XylForm)I(thf)2 }2 ] (7 a), and [Yb(XylForm)2 I(dme)]⋅dme (7 b) {(Form=ArNCHNAr; XylForm (Ar=2,6-Me2 C6 H3 ), MesForm (Ar=2,4,6-Me3 C6 H2 ), DippForm (Ar=2,6-iPr2 C6 H3 )}. Reaction of PhEuI and MesFormH in DME consistently gave 2, and reaction with XylFormH in THF gave 4. Europium complexes 1 and 3 a are seven-coordinate divalent monomers, whilst 3 b is a seven-coordinate dme-bridged polymer. Complex 5 a of the smaller YbII is a six-coordinate monomer, but the related 6 and 7 a are six-coordinate iodide-bridged dimers. 4 is a trivalent seven-coordinate hydroxide-bridged dimer, whereas complexes 5 b and 7 b are seven-coordinate monomeric YbIII derivatives. A characteristic structural feature is that iodide ligands are cisoid to the formamidinate ligand. To illustrate the synthetic scope of the pseudo-Grignard reagents, [Yb(Ph2 pz)I(thf)4 ] (Ph2 pz=3,5-diphenylpyrazolate) was oxidised with 1,2-diiodoethane to afford seven-coordinate monomeric pyrazolato-ytterbium(III) iodide [Yb(Ph2 Pz)I2 (thf)3 ] (8) in high yield, whilst metathesis between [Yb(Ph2 pz)I(thf)4 ] and NaCp (Cp=C5 H5 ) gave [Yb(C5 H5 )(Ph2 pz)(thf)]n (9), a nine-coordinate η5 :η5 -Cp-bridged coordination polymer. Reaction of the pseudo-Grignard reagent MeYbI with KN(SiMe3 )2 gave [K(dme)4 ][Yb{N(SiMe3 )2 }3 ] (10) with a charge-separated three-coordinate homoleptic [Yb{N(SiMe3 )2 }3 ]- anion, a complex that could be obtained in high yield by deliberate synthesis from YbI2 and KN(SiMe3 )2 in DME.

RESUMO

The increase in environmental temperature led to economic losses in the poultry industry, urging the use of feed supplements to mitigate the negative effects on chick's welfare and performance. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the effects of marine microalgae (Nannochloropsis Oculata, N. Oculata) additive on commercial Brown Lohmann laying hen's performance, blood metabolites, and antioxidant status under hot environmental conditions. One hundred and eighty birds (34 weeks old with an initial body weight of 1885 ± 23.5 g) were used till 47 weeks. The birds were divided into three equal groups (birds in each group were distributed into four equal replicates 15 hens/ replicate). The 1st group was the control (CON) and was fed the basal diet, while the 2nd (TR1) and 3rd (TR2) groups were fed the basal diet supplemented with 0.5 and 1.0% of N. Oculata, respectively. The results showed that total protein and globulin concentrations increased (P < 0.05) in treated groups compared with the control group, whereas, albumin concentration increased (P < 0.05) in TR2 compared to the control group. The concentration of ALT and AST decreased in hens fed N. Oculata. Supplementing with N. Oculata reduced serum cholesterol and creatinine concentrations, while glucose concentration increased (P < 0.05) in the treated groups compared to the control group. Serum calcium, total antioxidant capacity (TAC), Triiodothyronine (T3), and progesterone increased (P < 0.05) in hens fed N. Oculata. N. Oculata supplement improved production performance through a positive effect on egg number, egg weight, egg mass, feed conversion ratio, and mortality rate. In addition, the overall mean of shell thickness increased (P < 0.05) in hens fed N. Oculata. It can be concluded that the supplementation of 1.0% N. Oculata to the laying hens' diet enhanced productive performance, serum constituents, and antioxidant status under hot environmental conditions.

RESUMO

Effective bioremediation of a phenol-polluted environment harnesses microorganisms' ability to utilize hazardous compounds as beneficial degraders. In the present study, a consortium consisting of 15 bacterial strains was utilized. The current study aims to monitor the phenol biodegradation pathway. The tested consortium showed effective potential in the bioremediation of phenol-contaminated industrial wastewater. The enzymatic studies conducted brought to light that the bacterial consortium under test was proficient in degrading phenol under aerobic conditions while exhibiting the simultaneous expression of both ortho- and meta-cleavage pathways. It was observed that pheA, pheB, and C12O genes were maximally expressed, and the enzymes responsible for phenol degradation, namely, phenol hydroxylase, catechol 1,2-dioxygenase, and catechol 2,3-dioxygenase, reached maximum activity after 48 h of incubation with a 20-ppm phenol concentration. To gain a deeper understanding of the activation of both ortho- and meta-cleavage pathways involved in phenol degradation, a technique known as differential display reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (DDRT-PCR) was applied. This method allowed for the specific amplification and detection of genes responsible for phenol degradation. The expression levels of these genes determined the extent to which both ortho- and meta-cleavage pathways were activated in response to the presence of phenol.

RESUMO

Introduction: Lactose intolerance is a widespread problem that affects people of many different races all over the world. The following pharmacological supplements can improve the lives of those who suffer from this issue. Methods: This work focused on lactase producer isolation and statistical design (Plackett-Burman, and BOX-Behnken) to maximize the effectiveness of environmental factors. A lactase-producing bacterium was chosen from a discovery of 100 strains in soil that had previously been polluted with dairy products. Plackett-Burman investigated fifteen variables. Results: The most critical variables that lead to increased lactase synthesis are glucose, peptone, and magnesium sulfate (MgSO4). The ideal process conditions for the creation of lactase yield among the stated variables were then determined using a BOX-Benken design. To establish a polynomial quadratic relationship between the three variables and lactase activity, the Box-Behnken design level was used. The EXCEL-solver nonlinear optimization technique was used to predict the best form for lactase production. The ideal temperature and pH levels have been determined, both before and after the lactase purification process, to achieve the highest performance of isolated lactase. Conclusion: According to this study, Bacillus licheniformis is a perfect supply of the lactase enzyme (ß -Galactosidase), It can be used as a product to assist people who have health issues due to lactose intolerance.

RESUMO

Background: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a common arrhythmia in the non-cardiac intensive care unit (ICU). However, data concerning AF incidence and predictors in such populations are scarce and controversial. The study aimed to investigate the contributing factors of new-onset AF in elderly patients within the medical intensive care setting. Methods: Patients admitted to ICU during a 6-month period were prospectively studied. Patients admitted for short period postoperative monitoring and patients with chronic or paroxysmal AF were excluded. The conditions involved as AF risk factors or "triggers" from demographic data, history, and echocardiography were recorded. Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation II score was calculated. Electrolytes including some trace elements (zinc, copper, and magnesium) were analyzed. Results: The study included 142 patients (49% females). Mean age was 69.5 ± 7.3 years. AF was observed in 12%. Diagnosis of pneumonia (P < 0.001), low copper (P < 0.0001) and low zinc levels (P < 0.0001) was significantly associated with the occurrence of AF. By multivariate analysis, they remained statistically significant (odds ratio, 7.0; 95% confidence interval, 2.0 - 24.6; P < 0.01). Conclusions: A significant fraction of ICU elderly patients manifests AF. The relevant factors contributing to AF incidence in the elderly are pneumonia and low zinc and low copper.

RESUMO

This study aimed to assess the relationship between health locus control, resilience and self-efficacy in older adults with psychiatric disorders. This study was conducted using a cross-sectional design. Sample: A purposive sample of 291 older adults receiving psychiatric outpatient care at Alabbasya Hospital for Mental Health in Cairo was recruited for this study. The data were collected by the following tools: sociodemographic data sheet, the multidimensional health locus of control scale, the general self-efficacy scale, the brief resilience scale and the general health questionnaire. The study participants reported low levels of health locus of control, low levels of self-efficacy and normal levels of resilience. Furthermore, we found a strong positive correlation between resilience and general self-efficacy. The study concluded that older people with psychiatric disorders reported low levels of health locus of control and self-efficacy, while they experienced normal resilience levels. There was a strong positive correlation between resilience and general self-efficacy among the study participants. The results of this study can guide healthcare professionals in developing tailored interventions and support programs to improve this population's quality of life and overall mental health outcomes.

RESUMO

Nanotechnology holds significant promise for the development of novel and necessary products that enhance human health. Pharmacology and nanotechnology have contributed to developing advanced and highly effective drugs for cancer treatment and combating microbial infections. The microbiological effectiveness against the variety of examined microorganisms was assessed using the time killer curve, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), MIC techniques, and the agar well diffusion method. SEM was utilized to enhance the analysis of the mechanisms underlying the bio-interface interaction and intracellular localization of calcium oxide nanoparticles (CaONPs). The MTT test was used to examine the cytotoxicity of CaONP anticancer activity in various cancer cells, including colon, breast, and hepatic cells. The efficacy of CaONPs as an anticancer medication was elucidated by analyzing the gene expression of both treated and untreated cancer cells. MIC and MBC of CaONPs against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus epidermidis were 150, 150, 150, and 200 µg/ml, respectively. The MIC and MFC of CaONPs against Candida albicans were 200 µg/ml and 250 µg/ml, respectively. The IC50 values of various CaONPs vary depending on the type of cancer cells. The gene expression analysis of breast cancer cells undergoing treatment revealed the identification of several cancer-controlling genes, namely BAX, BCL2, P53, TERT, KRAS1, KRAS2, and RB1. The study demonstrated the notable antibacterial efficacy of CaONPs, highlighting their potential as cancer therapies.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: As a white biotechnological trend, esterases are thought to be among the most active enzymes' classes in biocatalysis and synthesis of industrially importance organic compounds. Esterases are used in many applications such as the manufacture of pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, leather, textile, paper, food, dairy products, detergents, and treatment of some environmental pollutants. RESULTS: A poly-histidine moiety was added to the C-terminal end of the Geobacillus sp. gene encoding carboxyl esterase (EstB, ac: KJ735452) to facilitate one-step purification. This recombinant protein was successfully expressed in Escherichia coli (E. coli) under control of Lambda promoter (λ). An open reading frame (ORF) of 1500 bps encoding a polypeptide of 499 amino acid residues and a calculated molecular weight (54.7 kD) was identified as carboxyl-esterase B due to its conserved glycine-X-serine-X-glycine motif (G-X-S-X-G) and its high similarity toward other carboxyl esterases, where the 3-D tertiary structure of EstB was determined based on high homology % (94.8) to Est55. The expression was scaled up using 7-L stirred tank bioreactor, where a maximum yield of enzyme was obtained after 3.5 h with SEA 51.76 U/mg protein. The expressed protein was purified until unity using immobilized metal affinity chromatography (IMAC) charged with cobalt and then characterized. The purified enzyme was most active at pH 8.0 and remarkably stable at pH (8-10). Temperature optimum was recorded at 65 °C, and it kept 70% of its activity after 1-h exposure to 60 °C. The active half-live of enzyme was 25 min at 70 °C and a calculated T melting (Tm) at 70 °C. The determined reaction kinetics Michaelis-Menten constant (Km), maximum velocity rate (Vmax), the turnover number (Kcat), and catalytic efficiency (Kcat/Km) of the pure enzyme were found 22.756 mM, 164.47 U/ml (59.6 min-1), and (2.619 mol/ min), respectively. CONCLUSION: Creation of a recombinant 6 × -His estB derived from a thermophile Geobacillus sp. was performed successfully and then overexpressed under λ-promoter. In a bench scale bioreactor, the overexpression was grown up, followed by one-step purification and biochemical characterization. The recorded promising pH and temperature stability properties suggest that this expressed carboxyl esterase could be used in many industrial sectors.

RESUMO

The current prevalence of cancerous diseases necessitates the exploration of materials that can effectively treat these conditions while minimizing the occurrence of adverse side effects. This study aims to identify materials with the potential to inhibit the metastasis of cancerous diseases within the human body while concurrently serving as therapeutic agents for their treatment. A novel approach was employed to enhance the anti-cancer properties of electrospun cellulose fibers by incorporating fullerene nanoparticles (NPs) into cellulose acetate (CA) fibers, resulting in a composite material called Fullerene@CA. This development aimed at utilizing the anti-cancer properties of fullerenes for potential therapeutic applications. This process has been demonstrated in vitro against various types of cancer, and it was found that Fullerene@CA nanocomposite fibers displayed robust anticancer activity. Cancer cells (Caco-2, MDA-MB 231, and HepG-2 cells) were inhibited by 0.3 and 0.5 mg.g-1 fullerene doses by 58.62-62.87%, 47.86-56.43%, and 48.60-57.73%, respectively. The tested cancer cells shrink and lose their spindle shape due to morphological changes. The investigation of the prepared nanocomposite reveals its impact on various genes, such as BCL2, NF-KB, p53, Bax, and p21, highlighting the therapeutic compounds' effectiveness. The experimental results demonstrated that the incorporation of NPs into CA fibers resulted in a significant improvement in their anti-cancer efficacy. Therefore, it is suggested that these modified fibers could be utilized as a novel therapeutic approach for the treatment and prevention of cancer metastasis.

RESUMO

Background: Ephedra alata, a member of the Ephedraceae family, was used to treat different diseases and it might be shown a strong efficacy to inhibit cancer cell lines. Methods: Due to the limited research available about this plant, the objective of this research was to evaluate the antioxidant, cytotoxic and apoptotic effects of Ephedra alata ethanolic extract (EAEE), against different human cancer cell lines. Results: EAEE inhibited the growth of the liver (HepG2), breast (MCF-7), and colon cancer cells (Caco-2). MCF-7 cells with an IC50 of 153 µg/ml, were the most sensitive to the extract. Furthermore, exploration using flow cytometry using Annexin V-FITC/PI assay demonstrated that EAEE caused death for all human cancer cells mainly through apoptosis. Very interestingly, qRT-PCR analysis using the ΔΔCt method revealed that four genes, Bax, p21, RB1, and TP53 were up-regulated in MCF-7 cells treated either with EAEE or S-FU drug. These findings let us believe that the mechanism by which EAEE kills breast cancer cells seems to be apoptosis via a P53-dependent manner, which involved intrinsic pathways through the induction of Bax, p21, and RB1. Conclusions: EAEE exhibits good biological properties in contradiction of HepG-2, MCF-7, and Caco-2 cell lines. This study appoints for the first time that EAEE increases the expression in MCF-7 cells of p53 and three more genetic traits that control cellular proliferation and apoptosis. Therefore, this plant could serve as a potential source to find new pro-apoptotic drugs for cancer treatment.

RESUMO

The amount of cellulosic materials is large and may lead to environmental pollution, so they can be converted into useful materials for use in food or energy. Statistical design (Plackett-Burman and Box-Behnken) was the main topic of this study and was used to optimize the effect of environmental factors on cellulase production by Aspergillus niger. Cellulase production using Plackett-Burman was 6.86-fold higher than the production of cellulase using the basal medium. B0X-Benken showed an increase in the cellulase production equal to 18 times compared to the basal medium, where the cellulase produced had an activity equal to 79.4 U/mL/min. Ammonium sulfate precipitation was applied to the crude enzyme, followed by sequential fractionation with an Amicon system. The Amicon was used to demonstrate the final volume, total enzyme activity, specific activity, purification fold, and yield of cellulase (partially purified enzyme). Numerous cellulolytic enzymes are abundant in Aspergillus species. All of the data showed that Aspergillus sp. might be a reliable source of industrially and economically useful cellulases. By statistically calculating the relevance of a large number of elements in one experiment using a multifactorial statistical design, time may be saved while still maintaining the validity of each component.

RESUMO

Recently, interest has increased in using bio-additives, herbs, and their extracts as feed additives because of their potential role in improving chick's health and productivity, especially during stress. Thus, our aim in this study is to examine whether nutritional supplementation (probiotics and clove essential oils) will help mitigate the negative effect of heat stress on the bird by modifying the microbial content, boosting immunity, oxidative status, metabolic, and growth. In this study, three hundred one-day-old broiler chicks (Ross 308) were fed the following experimental diet: (CON) basal diet (control diet); (CEO) CON with clove essential oils (300 mg/kg); (PRO) CON with probiotics (2 g/kg); (PC) CON with probiotics and clove essential oils. Our results showed a significant improvement (P < 0.05) in body weight gain, feed conversion ratio, nutrient digestibility, and digestive enzymes activities in broilers fed on PC, CEO, and PRO compared to the control group. Moreover, a significant decrease was recorded in the abdominal fat content and an increase in the relative weight of bursa of Fabricius, and higher antibody levels against Newcastle disease virus, as well as, there was an increase (P < 0.05) in interleukin 10 (IL-10) in all treated groups. Meanwhile, there was a decrease in tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) in all supplemented groups compared with the control group. Serum triglycerides, cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein concentrations, and alanine aminotransferase activities were significantly lower in the treated groups. Superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase levels were elevated (P < 0.05) and the malondialdehyde level value significantly decreased in all supplemented groups. The treated groups enhanced the ileum structure by increasing Lactobacillus, decreasing E. coli, and improving the morphometrically (P < 0.05). This study strongly suggests that clove essential oil and probiotic mixture can be used as a feed supplement to reduce the effects of heat stress by improving the growth performance and enhancing immuno-antioxidant status, ileum morphometric, as well as modifying the microbial community structure of the ileum of broilers.

RESUMO

Methylene blue (MB) dye is considered a well-known dye in many industries and the low concentration of MB is considered very polluted for all environment if it discharged without any treatment. For that reason, many researchers used advanced technologies for removing MB such as the electrochemical methods that considered very simple and give rapid response. Considering these aspects, a novel quartz crystal microbalance nanosensors based on different concentrations of PVC@SiO2 were designed for real-time adsorption of MB dye in the aqueous streams at different pHs and different temperatures. The characterization results of PVC@SiO2 showed that the PVC@SiO2 have synthesized in spherical shape. The performance of the designed QCM-Based PVC@SiO2 nanosensors were examined by the QCM technique. The sensitivity of designed nanosensors was evaluated at constant concentration of MB (10 mg/L) at different pHs (2, 7 and 11) and temperatures (20 °C, 25 °C, and 30 °C). From the experimental, the best concentration of PVC@SiO2 was 3% for adsorbed 9.99 mg of cationic methylene blue at pH 11 and temperature 20 °C in only 5.6 min.

RESUMO

Postmenopausal osteoporosis is a critical issue for female health worldwide. This current study was designed to evaluate the role of nanopowder eggshell (NPES) in healthy and ovariectomy-induced osteoporosis rats. Fifty-six female rats were divided into healthy rats (35) and ovariectomized rats (21). The healthy rats were subdivided into five groups (G1-G5) and received one of the following treatments: saline, 20 or 40 mg/kg of calcium carbonate, and 20 or 40 mg/kg of NPES. The 21 ovariectomized rats were divided into three groups (G6-G8) and received either saline, 40 mg/kg of calcium carbonate, or 40 mg/kg of NPES. Biochemical and histopathological assessments of bone formation and resorption were performed. Biomarkers of bone formation (calcium and osteocalcin (OCN)) and calcium content in left femur ashes were significantly higher in healthy rats given 40-mg/kg NPES than in healthy control rats and healthy rats given 40-mg/kg calcium carbonate. The ovariectomized groups had significantly lower levels of vitamin D3, OCN, and osteoprotegerin (OPG) than the healthy control. Alanine transaminase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and receptor activator of nuclear factor-κB ligand (RANKL) were significantly increased in the ovariectomized group than in the healthy control group. Treatment with NPES and calcium carbonate reduced liver enzymes in ovariectomized rats. NPES treatment significantly increased Vit D3, OCN, OPG, and bone ash mineral content (calcium, magnesium, zinc, and phosphorus) in ovariectomized rats. NPES also increased femur cortical thickness, osteoblast number, and collagen fiber. The current study suggests that NPES can modulate bone turnover biomarkers and increase bone trace elements. Moreover, NPES alleviates bone resorption in ovariectomy-induced osteoporosis.

RESUMO

Background: Vitamin D has many functions in the human body, and its deficiency is associated with skeletal and non-skeletal diseases. Vitamin D deficiency (blood level of 25 (OH) vitamin D < 20 ng/mL) has been reported worldwide, including Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). Its prevalence and associated factors vary according to KSA region. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the prevalence and risk factors of vitamin D deficiency in the Taif region of KSA. Methods: This retrospective study included patients who attended outpatient clinics at the Alameen General Hospital from 2019 to 2021. Demographic, clinical, and laboratory data were collected using a hospital software system. Results: The study included 2153 patients and vitamin D deficiency was diagnosed in 900 (41.8%) of whom were diagnosed with vitamin D deficiency. It was more common in males (P=0.021), younger age (<0.001), and in patients without comorbidities. There was a positive correlation between 25 (OH) vitamin D levels and blood cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein, calcium, and vitamin B12 levels. In the binary logistic regression analysis, age was the most significant predictor (P<0.001), followed by the absence of thyroid disease (P=0.012) and asthma (P=0.030). Conclusion: Vitamin D deficiency is common in the Saudi population despite sunny weather in KSA. It is more prevalent among males, younger individuals, and those without comorbidities such as thyroid diseases and asthma.

RESUMO

Recent ecological perturbations are presumed to be minimized by the application of biofertilizers as a safe alternative to chemical fertilizers. The current study aims to use bioinoculum (I) as an alternative biofertilizer and to alleviate salinity stress in the cultivar Solanum melongena L. Baldi. The salinity drench was 200 mM NaCl (S), which was used with different treatments (0; I; S; S + I) in pots prefilled with clay and sand (1:2). Results showed that salinity stress inhibited both plant fresh and dry weights, water content, and photosynthetic pigments. The content of root spermine (Spm), spermidine (Spd), and puterscine (Put) decreased. However, addition of the bioinoculum to salt-treated plants increased pigment content (80.35, 39.25, and 82.44% for chl a, chl b, and carotenoids, respectively). Similarly, K+, K+/Na+, Ca2+, P, and N contents were significantly enhanced. Increases were recorded for Spm + Spd and Put in root and shoot (8.4-F, 1.6-F and 2.04-F, 2.13-F, respectively). RAPD PCR showed gene expression upregulation of photosystem II D2 protein, glutathione reductase, glutathione-S-transferase, protease I, and protease II. The current work recommends application of the selected bioinoculum as a green biofertilizer and biopesticide. Additionally, the studied eggplant cultivar can be regarded as a source of salt tolerance genes in agricultural fields.
