RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The aim of the present study was to compare the epidemiological patterns of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV2) infections, hospitalizations, deaths, and duration of hospitalization during the fourth, fifth and sixth epidemic waves of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in Iran. METHODS: A multicenter retrospective observational study was conducted on hospitalized patients in four hospitals in the Babol district of northern Iran. The study periods were during the fourth, fifth, and sixth waves of the epidemic in Iran, (March 2021 to March 2022). A total of 13,312 patients with suspected COVID-19 were included. Patient demographics, medical history, length of hospital stay, and clinical outcomes were obtained from the hospital information system. Data on the cycle threshold (Ct) and SARS-CoV2 variant were collected for SARS-CoV2-positive cases. RESULTS: The highest number of hospitalized patients was reported during the fifth (Delta) wave (5231; 39.3%), while the lowest number of hospitalized patients was reported during the sixth (Omicron) wave (2143; 16.1%). In total, 6459 (48.5%) out of 13,312 hospitalized patients with suspected COVID-19 had a positive rRT-PCR result. The fifth (Delta) wave had the highest number of SARS-CoV2 rRT-PCR-positive hospitalized patients (3573, 55.3%), while the sixth (Omicron) wave had the lowest number (835, 12.9%). Moreover, 238 (3.7%) patients with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 died. The hospital mortality rate was 6.8% in the fourth (Alpha) wave, which reduced to 2.7 and 3.5% in the fifth (Delta) and sixth (Omicron) waves, respectively (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: This is the most comprehensive study evaluating the epidemiologic characteristics of laboratory-confirmed SARS-CoV2 cases in Iran during the Alpha, Delta, and Omicron waves. The highest number of SARS-CoV2-positive hospitalized patients was in the fifth wave of COVID-19 (dominance of the Delta variant), while the sixth wave (dominance of the Omicron variant) had the lowest number. Comorbidities were similar, and cardiovascular disease, diabetes, kidney disease, and hypertension were the main risk factors in all waves.

RESUMO

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and Hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) are two types of bone marrow stem cells that can proliferate and differentiate into different cell lineages. HSCs interact with MSCs under protective conditions, called niche. Numerous studies have indicated supportive effects of MSCs on HSCs proliferation and differentiation. Furthermore, HSCs have many clinical applications and could treat different hematologic and non-hematologic diseases. For this purpose, there is a need to perform in vitro studies to optimize their expansion. Therefore, various methods including co-culture with MSCs are used to address the limitations of HSCs culture. Some parameters that might be effective for improving the MSC/ HSC co-culture systems. Manipulating culture condition to enhance MSC paracrine activity, scaffolds, hypoxia, culture medium additives, and the use of various MSC sources, have been examined in different studies. In this article, we investigated the potential factors for optimizing HSCs/ MSCs co-culture. It might be helpful to apply a suitable approach for providing high-quality HSCs and improving their therapeutic applications.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The study aimed to examine the predictors of treatment nonresponse and low adherence to Internet-based cognitive behavioral therapy and face-to-face therapy for treating depression and anxiety in women facing the couple's fertility problems. METHODS: This is a secondary analysis based on a previous randomized controlled trial including 152 depressed/anxious women facing the couple's fertility problems. The study defines low adherence as receiving less than 4 sessions (out of 8 sessions). Nonresponse to treatment refers to a < 50% reduction in the anxiety and depression total scores. RESULTS: A high level of anxiety/depression score before psychotherapy increases the risk of nonresponse to both Internet-based and face-to-face psychotherapies by 1.4 to 2 times in women facing the couple's fertility problems after the treatment and in the 6-month follow-up. However, 4 factors, including diagnosis of mixed anxiety and depression, low education level, long marriage duration, and infertility caused by mixed female/male factors, reduced the risk of nonresponse to psychotherapies. CONCLUSION: Women facing the couple's fertility problems with high depression and anxiety scores are at risk of poor prognosis in response to psychotherapy. Psychologists and healthcare providers of infertility centers should pay more attention to the timely identification and referral of depressed/anxious patients to psychologists.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Infertility continued to be a major stressor among women with infertility during COVID-19pandemic. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of primary care posttraumatic stress disorder (PC-PTSD) on fertility problem of Iranian women with infertility during COVID-19 pandemic. METHOD: In this cross-sectional study, 386 women with infertility completed the questionnaires of PC-PTSD-5 and Fertility Problem Inventory (FPI) at an infertility center between 2020 and 2022. RESULTS: The mean of fertility problems was 145.20 (± 32.31). In terms of FPI subscales, the means were as follows: Sexual concern 21.80 (± 7.58), social concern 26.53 (± 8.94), relationship concern 26.02 (± 9.18), need for parenthood concern 40.88 (± 8.98), and rejection of childfree lifestyle 29.96 (± 7.69). The highest mean of FPI subscales was related to the need for parenthood concern in women with infertility. The strongest correlation was found between the subscales of sexual concern and social concern followed by sexual concern and relationship concern. The variables of PC-PTSD were a predictor of fertility problems (ß = 0.203, P < .0001). Additionally, the variables of PC-PTSDwere a predictor of sexual concern (ß = 0.248, P < .0001), social concern (ß = 0.237, P < .0001), relationship concern (ß = 0.143, P < .020), and need for parenthood concern (ß = 0.101, P < .010). After adjusting for demographic characteristics, there was a significant relationship between FPI with job (ß=-0.118, P < .031), education (ß=-0.130, P < .023), living place (ß = 0.115, P < .035), smoking (ß = 0.113, P < .036), relationship with husband (ß = 0.118, P < .027), and PC-PTSD symptom (ß = 0.158, P < .0001). In addition, the multivariate linear regression showed a significant association between sexual concern and education (ß=-0.152, P < .008), smoking (ß = 0.129, P < .018), PC-PTSD symptom (ß = 0.207, P < .0001); social concern and job (ß=-0.119, P < .033), PC-PTSD symptom (ß = 0.205, P < .0001); relationship concern and education (ß=-0.121, P < .033), living place (ß = 0.183, P < .001), relationship with husband (ß = 0.219, P < .0001); and rejection of childfree lifestyle and job (ß=-0.154, P < .007). CONCLUSION: Systematic PTSD screening during COVID-19 pandemic by healthcare providers can be uniquely used to identify, evaluate, and treat trauma-related health conditions in infertility settings, which can link women with infertility to mental health services. This can be novel and useful for future policymakers and practitioners in the infertility field.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) is a common public health issue affecting many women of reproductive age worldwide. This study has been designed to investigate of computer-based stress inoculation training (SIT) counseling approach on anxiety, depression, and stress of university students with PMS. METHODS: A randomized trial study with two parallel arms was done from 30 October 2022 to 21 June 2023 on 100 university students aged 18 to 38 at Babol University of Medical Sciences. The participants were randomly divided into two groups intervention and control. The data collection tools included questionnaires on demographic-fertility characteristics, the Premenstrual Symptoms Screening Tool (PSST), the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-14), the Sheehan Disability Scale (SDS) and Riff's Psychological Well-being Scale (RPWS). The data were assessed using chi-square, t-student, ANOVA repeated measure, and linear regression tests. A significance level of P < 0.05 was considered for the analysis. RESULTS: The results of the study showed that the SIT interventions decreased the PMS severity and most psychological factors so in the intervention group, SIT was able to significantly reduce anxiety, depression, perceived stress, and Sheehan's disability after intervention (P < 0.001). Based on multiple linear regression analysis, the most predictors of HADS were the PSS and SDS (ß = 0.285, p = 0.009 and ß = 0.236, p = 0.024, respectively). CONCLUSION: The computer-based SIT counseling approach could reduce the severity of symptoms and psychological factors in students. Therefore, SIT intervention is recommended to manage their PMS. RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Relapse is a frequent occurrence in autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (AHSCT), and early relapse after AHSCT results in poor survival and low quality of life. Predictive marker determination for AHSCT outcomes could be helpful in the prevention of relapse through personalized medicine. Here the predictive value of circulatory microRNAs (miRs) expression for AHSCT outcomes was studied. METHODS: 50 MM and lymphoma candidates for AHSCT participated in this study. Two plasma samples were obtained before AHSCT from each candidate; one before mobilization and the other after conditioning. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) were isolated by ultracentrifugation. miR-125b, miR-126, miR-150, and miR-155 expression were analyzed in both plasma and EVs using real time polymerase chain reaction analysis. Other data related to AHSCT and its outcomes were also collected. The predictive value of miRs and other factors for outcomes was assessed by multi-variant analysis. RESULTS: By 90 weeks follow up after AHSCT, multi-variant and ROC analysis showed miR-125b as a predictive marker for relapse, high lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), and high erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR). The cumulative incidence of relapse, high LDH, and high ESR increased with an increase in circulatory miR-125b expression. CONCLUSION: miR-125b could be applicable in prognosis evaluation and also create a possible new targeted therapy opportunity for enhanced outcomes and survival after AHSCT. TRIAL REGISTRATION: The study was retrospectively registered. Ethic code No: IR.UMSHA.REC.1400.541.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Polycystic ovary syndrome is one of the women's most common endocrine disorders that can cause anxiety, psychological distress, and reduced quality of life. Therefore, the present study aimed to determine the effect of mindfulness-based stress reduction counseling on the worries of women with polycystic ovary syndrome. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This quasi-experimental was implemented on 60 women with polycystic ovary syndrome, referring to health centers in Kerman, Iran, from April to September 2021. In the intervention group, MBSR was conducted in eight 90-minute sessions twice a week. A researcher-made questionnaire with 34 questions (with six domains including worries related to mental complications, interpersonal problems, non-pregnancy physical complications, pregnancy complications, sexual complications, and religious issues) on the worries of women with polycystic ovary syndrome was completed by the participants in two intervention and control groups as pre-and post-test and one month later. 22 SPSS statistical software was used for analysis. RESULTS: The mean score of worries in the intervention group (48.18 ± 5.18) compared to the control group (75.73 ± 8.08) was significantly reduced in total and all six domains immediately after the intervention (P < 0.0001). One month later also, the total mean score of worries and subtitles decreased significantly (P < 0.0001) in the intervention group (38.27 ± 3.58) in comparison with the control group (76.13 ± 7.52). CONCLUSION: Results showed that the method of reducing stress based on mindfulness had caused a significant reduction in worries in the intervention group. Therefore, this method can be used to improve the mental health of this group of patients in health centers.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Some studies indicate that more than 10% of pregnant women are affected by psychological problems. The current COVID-19 pandemic has increased mental health problems in more than half of pregnant women. The present study compared the effectiveness of virtual (VSIT) and semi-attendance Stress Inoculation Training (SIT) techniques on the improvement of the symptoms of anxiety, depression, and stress of pregnant women with psychological distress. METHODS: This study was conducted on 96 pregnant women with psychological distress in a 2-arm parallel-group, randomized control trial between November 2020 and January 2022. The semi-attendance SIT received treatment for six sessions, sessions 1, 3 and 5 as individual face-to-face and sessions 2, 4 and 6 as virtual once a week for 60 min continuously [n = 48], and the virtual SIT received six sessions simultaneously once a week for 60 min (n = 48) in pregnant women of 14-32 weeks' gestation referred to two selected hospitals. The primary outcome of this study was BSI-18 [Brief Symptom Inventory] and NuPDQ-17 [Prenatal Distress Questionnaire]. The secondary outcomes were the PSS-14 [Cohen's General Perceived Stress Scale]. Both groups completed questionnaires measuring anxiety, depression, pregnancy-specific stress, and generally perceived stress questionnaires before and after the treatment. RESULTS: The post-intervention results showed that the stress inoculation training technique in both VSIT and SIT interventions effectively reduced anxiety, depression, psychological distress, pregnancy-specific stress and general perceived stress [P < 0.01]. Also, the SIT interventions on decreasing anxiety [P < 0.001, η2 = 0.40], depression [P < 0.001, η2 = 0.52] and psychological distress [P < 0.001, η2 = 0.41] were more considerable than that of VSIT. However, There was no significant difference between SIT and VSIT intervention in terms of their effects on pregnancy-specific stress [P < 0.38, η2 = 0.01] and general stress [P < 0.42, η2 = 0.008]. CONCLUSION: The semi-attendance SIT group has been a more effective and practical model than the VSIT group, for reducing psychological distress. Therefore, semi-attendance SIT is recommended for pregnant women.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Psychological distress (PD) is a significant issue during pregnancy and postpartum, adversely affecting both children and mothers. This study aims to determine PD's prevalence and risk factors in a large Iranian population sample during pregnancy and postpartum. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted using data from the Babol Pregnancy Mental Health Registry (located in the north of Iran) between June 2020 and March 2021. A total of 2305 women were included, with 1639 during pregnancy and 666 during postpartum. Psychological distress was assessed using the Brief Symptoms Inventory (BSI-18), and data were analyzed using independent t-tests and multiple logistic regressions. RESULTS: The prevalence of psychological distress, defined by a cut-off score of BSI ≥ 13, was 19% during pregnancy and 15% during postpartum. Multivariate logistic analysis revealed that high-risk pregnancy was the leading risk factor for psychological distress during the antenatal period (ß = 1.776, P < 0.001), as well as its three subscales: somatization (ß = 1.355, P = 0.019), anxiety symptoms (ß = 2.249, P < 0.001), and depressive symptoms (ß = 1.381, P = 0.028). Additionally, women with a gestational age < 20 weeks had a higher risk of psychological distress (ß = 1.344, P = 0.038) and the somatization subscale (ß = 1.641, P < 0.001). During the postpartum period, women residing in urban areas were at higher risk of psychological distress (ß = 1.949, P = 0.012), as well as two subscales: anxiety symptoms (ß = 1.998, P = 0.012) and depressive symptoms (ß = 1.949, P = 0.020). CONCLUSION: The high prevalence of psychological distress emphasizes detecting and treating PD during pregnancy and postpartum, particularly in women with high-risk pregnancies. This study suggests that obstetricians and midwives should implement programs to identify women experiencing psychological distress during early pregnancy through postpartum visits.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Pregnant women with suspected fetal anomalies experience a great deal of stress following prenatal screening tests. The present study aimed to investigate women's worries about prenatal screening tests suspected of fetal anomalies. METHODS: Through the use of qualitative content analysis, the reports of women whose prenatal screening tests were suspected of fetal anomalies were analyzed and the results were interpreted. The participants were selected from four public and private maternity care clinics of Babol, Iran, from December 2021 to January 2022, using targeted convenience sampling. Data were collected from 20 women aged 24 to 41 years old, who underwent prenatal screening tests and were suspected of fetal anomalies, using semi-structured face-to-face interviews. RESULTS: The four main themes included the "causes of worries" (with sub-themes of challenge with spouse and relatives, medical diagnosis processes, previous unpleasant experiences, physical and mental problems, financial worries, and misinformation), "anxiety-coping styles" (with cognitive emotion-oriented, behavioral emotion-oriented, and problem-oriented sub-themes), "reactions to a possible diagnosis of anomaly" (with three sub-themes, namely concealment, extreme fear and worry, and denial), and "attribution of the cause of the anomaly" (with sub-themes of consanguine marriage, evil eyes, tendency to have a baby of a particular gender, a history of anomalies in the previous child, the spouse's medical illness, unplanned pregnancy, and high maternal anxiety). CONCLUSION: Women with suspected fetal anomalies experience a great deal of stress, the most important reason for which is the "physician's uncertainty". "Sharing worries with relatives" was the most common style of coping with worries. Establishing emotional support and empathetic communication between midwives and physicians with pregnant women suspected of fetal anomalies were important ways to reduce their worries.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: It is essential to empower young people to promote reproductive health (RH) and develop effective educational programs to prevent risky behaviors. This study aimed to investigate the factors affecting students' attitudes towards RH based on the ecological model and then design an educational program. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 461 female students aged 18-29 in the north of Iran. This study was done in two stages. In the first stage, factors affecting the attitude towards RH including demographic questionnaire, interpersonal communication skills, family communication pattern, depression, stress and anxiety, body self-image, and self-confidence were determined. In the second stage, an educational program was designed based on the most effective factors. Independent t-test, ANOVA, and multiple linear regression were employed using SPSS version 20 software. Also, STATA version 15 software was utilized for statistical modeling to predict the best predictive model of attitude towards RH. RESULTS: 47.7% of students had a good attitude toward RH. The majority of students had problems with interpersonal communication skills (60.7%). Also, 28.5% experienced depression, 35.8% anxiety, and 12.8% stress at different levels. More than a quarter of the students (26.5%) had poor body self-image and 18.7% had Undesirable self-esteem. Interpersonal skills (P = 0.002), family communication pattern (P = 0.004), stress (p = 0.019), anxiety (P = 0.001), and body self-image (P = 0.034) have a significant relationship with the attitude towards RH. The multiple regression showed that the most important effective factor on RH is the dialogue orientation of family communication pattern (P = 0.041), stress (P = 0.002), and anxiety (P = 0.001). CONCLUSION: Stress and anxiety management training and the use of dialogue orientation in the family communication pattern for young female students are recommended based on the scientific model.

RESUMO

The first case of COVID-19 in Iran was reported on February 25, 2020, leading in the implementation of a government-mandated lockdown as the virus gradually spread to different cities. The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on air quality in Ahvaz city by utilizing Sentinel 5 images and the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform. Specifically, the concentrations of air pollutants, including CO, NO2, SO2, and HCHO, during the COVID-19 pandemic from May 10 to June 01, 2021, were examined. Also, they were compared to the same period in 2019. Additionally, the influence of meteorological parameters, such as wind speed and precipitation, on pollutant concentrations during the pandemic and in the pre-pandemic year of 2019 were investigated. The results revealed a significant decrease in the concentrations of NO2 (13.7%), CO (6.1%), SO2 (28%), and HCHO (9.5%) in Ahvaz during the study period in 2021 compared to the same period in 2019. Statistical analyses indicated no significant changes in wind speed and precipitation between the COVID-19 pandemic and the pre-pandemic period in 2019. Therefore, the impact of these parameters on the observed changes in pollutant concentrations can be disregarded. It is clear that the COVID-19 epidemic and the subsequent lockdown measures, including traffic restrictions and business closures, played a crucial role in significantly reducing air pollutant concentrations in Ahvaz.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The present study compared the effectiveness of ICBT to face-to-face CBT on the improvement of adjustment disorder symptoms in infertile women. Method: In a pragmatic, multi-center (public or private), single-blinded, non-inferior randomized controlled trial (RCT), 152 patients with AD (100 women in public center and 52 women in private canter) were assigned to ICBT and CBT. Primary outcomes were Adjustment Disorder New Module-20 (ADNM-20) and Hospital Anxiety and Depression (HADS). Secondary outcomes were the Fertility Problem Inventory (FPI) and Fertility Adjustment Scale (FAS). Results: "Peaceful mind" ICBT was feasible and accessible for delivering the treatment to infertile women with AD. At end-of-treatment, improvements in ICBT were non-inferior to CBT for symptoms of AD, anxiety, and depression. Additionally, the non-inferiority of ICBT to CBT was maintained at a three-month follow-up. Conclusions: ICBT was non-inferior to CBT in improving mental symptoms in infertile women with AD.

RESUMO

Mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (MSCs) are known as the issue in biology because of some unpredictable characteristics in the different microenvironments especially in their bone marrow niche. MSCs are used in the regenerative medicine because of their unique potentials for trans-differentiation, immunomodulation, and paracrine capacity. But, their pathogenic and pro-survival effects in tumors/cancers including hematologic malignancies are indisputable. MSCs and/or their derivatives might be involved in tumor growth, metastasis and drug resistance in the leukemias. One of important relationship is MSCs and hematologic malignancy-derived cells which affects markedly the outcome of disease. The communication between these two cells may be contact-dependent and/or contact-independent. In this review, we studied the crosstalk between MSCs and malignant hematologic cells which results the final feedback either the progression or suppression of blood cell malignancy. RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Common treatments of liver disease failed to meet all the needs in this important medical field. It results in an urgent need for proper some new adjuvant therapies. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and their derivatives are promising tools in this regard. We aimed to compare the Silymarin, as traditional treatment with mesenchymal stem cell conditioned medium (MSC-CM), as a novel strategy, both with therapeutic potentialities in term of liver failure (LF) treatment. METHODS AND RESULTS: Mice models with liver failure were induced with CCl4 and were treated in the groups as follows: normal mice receiving DMEM-LG medium as control, LF-mice receiving DMEM-LG medium as sham, LF-mice receiving Silymarin as LF-SM, and LF-mice receiving MSC sphere CM as LF-MSC-CM. Biochemical, histopathological, molecular and protein level parameters were evaluated using blood and liver samples. Liver enzymes, MicroRNA-122 values as well as necrotic score were significantly lower in the LF-SM and LF-MSC-CM groups compared to sham. LF-SM showed significantly higher level of total antioxidant capacity and malondialdehyde than that of LF-MSC-CM groups. Sph-MSC-CM not only induced more down-regulated expression of fibrinogen-like protein 1 and receptor interacting protein kinases1 but also led to higher expression level of keratinocyte growth factor. LF-MSC-CM showed less mortality rate compared to other groups. CONCLUSIONS: Hepato-protective potentialities of Sph-MSC-CM are comparable to those of Silymarin. More inhibition of necroptosis/ necrosis and inflammation might result in rapid liver repair in case of MSC-CM administration.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) transplantation is considered a possible treatment option capable of curing various diseases. The aim of this study was the co-culturing of mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) spheres with HSCs under hypoxic condition to enhance the proliferation, self-renewal, stemness, and homing capacities of HSCs. METHODS AND RESULTS: HSCs were expanded after being subjected to different conditions including cytokines without feeder (Cyto), co-culturing with adherent MSCs (MSC), co-culturing with adherent MSCs + hypoxia (MSC + Hyp), co-culturing with MSCs spheres (Sph-MSC), co-culturing with MSCs spheres + hypoxia (Sph-MSC + Hyp), co-culturing with MSC spheres + cytokines (Sph-MSC + Cyto). After 10 days, total nucleated cell (TNC) and CD34+/CD38- cell counts, colony-forming unit assay (CFU), long-term culture initiating cell (LTC-IC), the expression of endothelial protein C receptor (EPCR), nucleostemin (NS), nuclear factor I/X (Nfix) CXCR4, and VLA-4 were evaluated. The TNC, CD34+/CD38- cell count, CFU, and LTC-IC were higher in the Sph-MSC + Hyp and Sph-MSC + Cyto groups as compared with those of the MSC + Hyp group (P < 0.001). The expanded HSCs co-cultured with MSC spheres in combination with hypoxia expressed more EPCR, CXCR4, VLA-4, NS, and Nfix mRNA. The protein expression was also more up-regulated in the Sph-MSC + Cyto and Sph-MSC + Hyp groups. CONCLUSION: Co-culturing HSCs with MSC spheres under hypoxic condition not only leads to higher cellular yield but also increases the expression of self-renewal and homing genes. Therefore, we suggest this approach as a simple and non-expensive strategy that might improve the transplantation efficiency of HSCs.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: With the advancement of technology, the rate of access and use of mobile phones in different communities has increased significantly. Mobile phones emit electromagnetic waves and therefore excessive use of them may have harmful effects on physical and mental health and especially on the cardiovascular system. This study aimed to investigate the association between self-reported mobile phone use duration and blood pressure and heart rate (HR) using data from Ravansar non-communicable diseases (RaNCD) cohort study. METHODS: The present cross-sectional study was performed using the data of 8905 out of 10,065 participants in the RaNCD study in Iran. According to the mean self-reported duration of mobile phone usage (min/day) over the previous 12 months, all users were divided into four groups. The first and fourth groups had the least and most time using mobile phones respectively. The relationship between blood pressure and the duration of mobile phone use was determined using univariate and multiple linear regression. RESULTS: Of 8905 participants aged 35-65 years, 1515 (17.0%) of them didn't use mobile phones. The minimum, maximum, and mean duration of self-reported mobile phone use between users were 3.4, 50.4, and 19.5 min/day, respectively. A decrease in women's systolic and diastolic blood pressure (SBP and DBP) and HR was observed by increasing the duration of mobile phone use. With adjustment for effective confounding factors, there was a significant negative association between SBP [-2.52 (-4.11, -0.94)], DBP [-1.86 (-2.83, -0.89)], and duration of mobile use. CONCLUSION: In this study, a significant decreasing trend was found between SBP, DBP, and HR and higher mobile phone usage in women. Based on regression analysis, SBP, DBP, and duration of mobile phone use were associated negatively in those who used their phones for at least 8 h.

RESUMO

Objectives: To avoid worsening from mild, moderate, and severe diseases and to reduce mortality, it is necessary to identify the subpopulation that is more vulnerable to the development of COVID-19 unfavorable consequences. This study aims to investigate the demographic information, prevalence rates of common comorbidities among negative and positive real-time reverse-transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (rRT-PCR) patients, and the association between SARS-CoV-2 cycle threshold (Ct) at hospital admission, demographic data, and outcomes of the patients in a large population in Northern Iran. Methods: This large retrospective cross-sectional study was performed from 7 March to 20 December 2020. Demographic data, including gender, age, underlying diseases, clinical outcomes, and Ct values, were obtained from 8,318 cases suspected of COVID-19, who were admitted to four teaching hospitals affiliated to Babol University of Medical Sciences (MUBABOL), in the north of Iran. Results: Since 7 March 2020, the data were collected from 8,318 cases suspected of COVID-19 (48.5% female and 51.5% male) with a mean age of 53 ± 25.3 years. Among 8,318 suspected COVID-19 patients, 3,250 (39.1%) had a positive rRT-PCR result; 1,632 (50.2%) patients were male and 335 (10.3%) patients died during their hospital stay. The distribution of positive rRT-PCR revealed that most patients (464 (75.7%)) had a Ct between 21 and 30 (Group B). Conclusion: Elderly patients, lower Ct, patients having at least one comorbidity, and male cases were significantly associated with increased risk for COVID-19-related mortality. Moreover, mortality was significantly higher in patients with diabetes, kidney disease, and respiratory disease.

RESUMO

AIM: This study aimed to evaluate the impact of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) on the flexural strength of feldspathic porcelain. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eighty bar-shaped ceramic specimens were prepared in five groups, including a control group and four case groups containing 5, 10, 15, and 20% w/w of AgNPs. Each group consisted of 16 specimens. Silver Nanoparticles were synthesized by a simple deposition method. Three-point bending test was used in the universal testing machine (UTM) machine to evaluate the flexural strength of the specimens. The fractured surface of the ceramic samples was analyzed under scanning electron microscopy (SEM). In order to analyze the data obtained, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey tests were used (p <0.05). RESULTS: The results implied that the average flexural strength of the samples in the control group was 90.97 MPa and for the experimental groups reinforced with 5, 10, 15, and 20% w/w of AgNPs were 89, 81, 76, and 74 MPa, respectively. CONCLUSION: The addition of AgNPs with a certain amount (up to a concentration of 15% w/w) without reducing the flexural strength improves the antimicrobial properties of the materials used and ultimately improves its quality for dental applications. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The addition of AgNPs can improve the antimicrobial properties and suitability of the materials.

RESUMO

Platelet concentrate (PC) transfusion is administrated to reduce the hemostatic complications in patients with thrombocytopenia. Strength platelet against oxidative stress conditions lead to decrease in platelet storage lesion (PSL). This study was aimed to evaluate L-carnitine (LC) effects on platelet oxidative stress and platelet apoptosis during storage time. PC bags were randomly selected and each bag was divided into two equal parts. L-carnitine was added to test groups. Normal saline was added to control groups. Platelets count, mean platelet volume (MPV), pH, Platelet aggregation, nitric oxide metabolism (nitric/nitrate), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), malondealdehyde concentration (MDA), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) enzyme activity, mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (ROS) and cytochrome C releasing were assayed by standard methods in 1, 3, 5 and 7 days of platelet storage. LDH enzyme activity was increased during storage but it had lower level in L-carnitine-treated platelets. LC treatment led to reduction in MDA concentration (3.35 ± 0.98 vs 5.3 ± 1.32, p = 0.003 and 6.52 ± 1.88 vs 5.67 ± 1.25, p = 0.005 for day 5 and day 7 respectively). Increased level of TAC was detected in LC-treated platelets in comparison to control (0.29 ± 0.06 vs 0.21 ± 0.05, p = 0.008 and 0.22 ± 0.03 vs 0.16 ± 0.03, p = 0.003 for day 5 and day 7 respectively). Interestingly, mitochondrial ROS and cytochrome C releasing was significantly lower in LC-treated versus control group during platelet storage. L-carnitine not only decreases mitochondrial ROS but also reduces cytochrome C releasing in PCs during storage. It might be considered as safe additive to decrease PSL in the future.
