RESUMO

Fifty-one cases of Hodgkin's disease in Turkish children under 15 years of age were clinically analyzed, and 40 cases were evaluated histopathologically according to the Rye Conference classification. Complete clinical, laboratory, and radiologic findings for each patient were examined. Most patients were of low socioeconomic class, and nearly all were Caucasian. The most common presenting clinical sign was cervical lymph node enlargement; hepatosplenomegaly was noted in 18 patients. Nearly three times as many males as females were found among the patients whose diseases were histologically analyzed, and most of the children with Hodgkin's disease were in the first decade of life. Classification of the cases revealed a predominance (67.5%) of the mixed cellularity (MC) type. Of 40 patients analyzed, 34 had disease in clinical stage IV, mostly of the MC type. The data indicated a correlation of the high incidence of the MC type of Hodgkin's disease with the socioeconomic and environmental conditions in Turkey.

RESUMO

The serum zinc concentration in 101 pregnant women and 40 control subjects were determined by using atomic absorption spectrophotometer. The zinc levels were significantly low in 30 poorly nourished pregnant women compared to controls (P less than 0.01), whereas there was no statistical difference between the normal mean zinc values and that of well-nourished pregnant women (P greater than 0.05). This study revealed that nutrition is an important factor during pregnancy among Turkish women. In view of severe teratogenic effects of maternal zinc depletion in experimental animals as well as epidemiological evidence that maternal zinc deficiency could be a cause of severe congenital malformations of the central nervous system in humans, more extensive studies are definitely needed in Turkey.

RESUMO

In this study the hair zinc levels of 115 healthy subjects, 50 girls and 65 boys, between the age groups 0 to 15 years were determined by using atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The hair zinc levels obtained generally agree with those reported in the literature. The hair zinc levels of the subjects were studied as a function of age, sex and color of hair. It was found that the levels of hair zinc increased as a function of age, whereas no statistically significant differences with respect to sex and color of hair were observed. In a protein-calorie malnourished group of 11 girls and six boys between the ages 0 to 3 years, it was found that the hair zinc levels were significantly higher than a group of healthy subjects of the same age range. In a protein-calorie malnourished group of seven subjects no correlation was found between hair zinc and serum levels.

RESUMO

This study was made on 100 patients with retinitis pigmentosa and 23 of their relatives. Their plasma, erythrocyte, and hair Zn and serum Cu levels were compared with those of a control group of 14 healthy persons. No statistically significant difference in these levels was found between the patients with retinitis pigmentosa and the relatives or controls.

RESUMO

Recently, it has been reported that serum zinc binding capacity (ZnBC) is a very important criterion to evaluate body zinc (Zn) status. It has been shown that chronic Zn deficiency occur in the patients with thalassemia major (TM). Zn deficiency in TM may cause hyperzincuria, high ferritin levels, hepatic iron load, hepatic dysfunction. This study was undertaken to determine serum Zn levels and ZnBC in different thalassemia forms and sickle cell disease (SCD). The study has been carried out on 30 Thalassemia Major (TM), 34 Thalassemia Intermedia (TI), 31 Thalassemia Trait (TT) and 10 SCD. As control group,13 healthy children and 20 adults were included. Serum Zn and ZnBC were determined by atomic absorption, then saturation index (SI%: serum Zn/ZnBC x 100) was calculated. Serum Zn levels in all patients were lower than control (p < 0.01). Serum ZnBC was at a normal level in patients with TT and TI but it was found to be lower in TM and SCD than control (p < 0.01). While serum Zn levels decrease and ZnBC increase in nutritionaL Zn deficiency, serum Zn levels decrease but ZnBC doesn't increase in patients with thalassemia.

RESUMO

Zinc sulphate capsules and syrup were prepared as conventional dosage forms and in vivo experiments were performed for both on the conventional dosage forms as well as on microcapsules. Blood samples were taken from healthy volunteers at 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 hours and AUC3 and AUC5 were calculated by trapezoidal rule. Relative bioavailability of zinc was calculated and the 5th hour relative bioavailability difference was found to be significant. The results show that zinc sulphate in microcapsule form was able to prolong the action.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of calcitonin (CT) treatment on bone pain, osteoporosis, bone fractures and blood chemistry in thalassemic patients. Twenty-four patients with an age range of 10-24 years were included, 14 of whom received 100 IU CT and 250 mg calcium 3 times a week. The others (n = 10) were followed up as a control group with only routine thalassemia therapy. After 1 year of treatment, bone pain disappeared and radiological signs of osteoporosis had improved significantly (p < 0.01) in the treatment group. CT has no important side effects.

RESUMO

Zinc absorption was measured in 37 children with malnutrition using the oral zinc tolerance test (22.5 mg elementary zinc) and the results compared with those of a group of healthy control subjects. The increase in plasma zinc was significantly lower in patients with marasmic kwashiorkor than in the control group. The zinc tolerance test was, however, normal in marasmic patients. We conclude that zinc deficiency occurs in some types of protein energy malnutrition, and that malabsorption may aggravate zinc deficiency. It is reasonable to give higher doses of zinc than are usually recommended during oral zinc supplementation in patients with protein energy malnutrition.

RESUMO

Zinc absorption was examined in 25 nonalcoholic cirrhotic patients using the oral zinc tolerance test and comparing results to a healthy control group. With 22.5 mg elementary zinc, the increase in plasma zinc was significantly lower in the cirrhotic patients than in the control group with P less than 0.01 in the first and second hours and P less than 0.05 in the fourth hour. The zinc malabsorption may result from an abnormal small intestinal mucosa. Indeed small intestinal biopsies in all patients showed partial shortening and prominent distension of villi and intense stromal edema with inflammatory cell infiltration of the lamina propria. However, it is not clear whether these intestinal changes are due to zinc deficiency or to portal hypertension. Thus zinc malabsorption appears to contribute to zinc deficiency in nonalcoholic cirrhotics and seems to result, in part, from pathological changes in the mucosa.

RESUMO

Haemoglobin Lepore was demonstrated in four members of a Turkish family. It was found in the heterozygote state and was associated with erythrocyte morphology similar to that observed in the beta thalassaemia trait. The average concentration of haemoglobin Lepore was 8.1% of the total haemoglobin. Structural analysis showed that the Lepore haemoglobin was the LeporeBoston type. This is the first reported instance of the occurrence of haemoglobin Lepore in Turkey.

RESUMO

We have determined serum Zn, Fe, Cu and Mg in 42 patients aging from 3 months to 22 years with homozygous beta-thalassemia and thalassemia intermedia and in 36 control subjects of the same ages. Serum zinc was significantly decreased. Serum copper and iron were increased, but magnesium was found to be at normal levels.

RESUMO

A radiological survey of 1204 members of the population of Bursa revealed a high prevalence of spina bifida occulta (16.3%). Hospital deliveries in the area also showed a high incidence of anencephalus and spina bifida aperta (5.8 per 1000 total births) in the years 1983 to 1986. In the first 6 months of 1987, however, there was an increase in incidence to 20 per 1000 births (P less than 0.01). The possibility is raised that the Chernobyl disaster of May 1986 might have resulted in the elevation of the rate in an already susceptible population.
