RESUMO

Peripheral refraction is believed to be involved in the development of myopia. The aim of this study was to compare the relative peripheral refraction (RPR) at four different levels of illuminance, ranging from photopic conditions to complete darkness, using an open-field autorefraction method. The RPR was calculated for each eccentricity by subtracting central from peripheral autorefraction measurements. The study included 114 myopic eyes from 114 subjects (mean age of 21.81 ± 1.91 years) and the mean difference in RPR between scotopic and photopic conditions (0 and 300 lux, respectively) was +0.32 D at 30° temporal and +0.37 D at 30° in the nasal visual field (NVF). Statistically significant differences were observed between 0 and 300 lux at 30° in the temporal visual field and at 30° and 20° in the NVF. Our results revealed a significant increase in relative peripheral hyperopia with increasing visual field eccentricity along the horizontal visual field in myopic eyes of young adults. Furthermore, this relative peripheral hyperopia increased as illumination decreased. These findings suggest that an increase in peripheral illuminance may protect against myopic eye growth.

RESUMO

Disability glare is defined as the loss of contrast sensitivity of the retinal image due to intraocular straylight originated from the presence of an intense and broad bright light in the field of vision. This loss of vision can range between vision loss at high spatial frequencies or total temporal blindness. If the extreme case occurs, the recovery time is crucial in night driving conditions or those professional activities in which maximum visual acuity is required at any moment. The recovery time depends mainly on the intensity and glare angle of the light source, ocular straylight, and the photoreceptor response at the retina. The recovery time can also be affected by ocular pathologies, aging, or physiological factors that increase ocular straylight. The aim of this work is to develop a new optical instrument based on psychophysical methodology as well as to investigate the recovery time from total disability glare (photobleaching) as a function of the contrast of the visual target and the glare angle of the source in healthy volunteers. Results showed significant exponential correlation between recovery time and contrast of the visual target and linear correlation between contrast sensitivity and the glare angle. Those findings allowed to obtain an empirical expression to compute the recovery time required to restore contrast sensitivity baseline vision after photobleaching. Finally, a statistical dependence of recovery time with age was found for short glare angles that disappear as the glare angle increases.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The aim of this work is to determinate the effects in the physical parameters in terms of intraocular pressure (IOP) and central corneal thickness (CCT) and corneal biomechanics in terms of corneal resistance factor (CRF) and corneal hysteresis (CH) of wearing silicone-hydrogel soft contact lenses (SiH-CLs) in young adult subjects during a short-term follow-up. METHODS: 40 eyes of 20 healthy patients with a mean age of 22.87 ± 4.14 were involved in this study. Subjects with corneal diseases, dry eye, irregular astigmatism or who have been previous contact lens wearers were excluded. The ocular response analyzer (Reichert Ophthalmic Instruments) was used to measure CH, CRF and IOP and Scheimpflug imaging (the GALILEI™ Dual Scheimpflug camera analyzer, Ziemer) was used to measure CCT before and 10 days (Group 1) and 20 days (Group 2) after wearing the SiH-CLs. RESULTS: IOP was significantly decreased 10 days after using the SiH-CLs (p = 0.009). Within the 20 days' period, Group 2 revealed an even more pronounced decrease in IOP (p = 0.003) while CH increased significantly (p = 0.04). CCT and CRF did not show a significant change during the period of SiH-CLs use. Our finding allowed obtaining an empirical expression that relates IOP, CCT, CRF and CH within a biomechanical compensation experimental model. CONCLUSIONS: Corneal biomechanical parameters and physical properties of the cornea may be altered due to SiH-CLs use. Our findings could have an impact on the management of glaucoma progression and ocular hypertension.

RESUMO

Recent extinctions often resulted from humans retaliating against wildlife that threatened people's interests or were perceived to threaten current or future interests. Today's subfield of human-wildlife conflict and coexistence (HWCC) grew out of an original anthropocentric concern with such real or perceived threats and then, starting in the mid-1990s, with protecting valued species from people. Recent work in ethics and law has shifted priorities toward coexistence between people and wild animals. To spur scientific progress and more effective practice, we examined 4 widespread assumptions about HWCC that need to be tested rigorously: scientists are neutral and objective about HWCC; current participatory, consensus-based decisions provide just and fair means to overcome challenges in HWCC; wildlife threats to human interests are getting worse; and wildlife damage to human interests is additive to other sources of damage. The first 2 assumptions are clearly testable, but if they are entangled can become a wicked problem and may need debunking as myths if they cannot be disentangled. Some assumptions have seldom or never been tested and those that have been tested appear dubious, yet the use of the assumptions continues in the practice and scholarship of HWCC. We call for tests of assumptions and debunking of myths in the scholarship of HWCC. Adherence to the principles of scientific integrity and application of standards of evidence can help advance our call. We also call for practitioners and interest groups to improve the constitutive process prior to decision making about wildlife. We predict these steps will hasten scientific progress toward evidence-based interventions and improve the fairness, ethics, and legality of coexistence strategies.

Compassionate conservation is based on the ethical position that actions taken to protect biodiversity should be guided by compassion for all sentient beings. Critics argue that there are 3 core reasons harming animals is acceptable in conservation programs: the primary purpose of conservation is biodiversity protection; conservation is already compassionate to animals; and conservation should prioritize compassion to humans. We used argument analysis to clarify the values and logics underlying the debate around compassionate conservation. We found that objections to compassionate conservation are expressions of human exceptionalism, the view that humans are of a categorically separate and higher moral status than all other species. In contrast, compassionate conservationists believe that conservation should expand its moral community by recognizing all sentient beings as persons. Personhood, in an ethical sense, implies the individual is owed respect and should not be treated merely as a means to other ends. On scientific and ethical grounds, there are good reasons to extend personhood to sentient animals, particularly in conservation. The moral exclusion or subordination of members of other species legitimates the ongoing manipulation and exploitation of the living worlds, the very reason conservation was needed in the first place. Embracing compassion can help dismantle human exceptionalism, recognize nonhuman personhood, and navigate a more expansive moral space.

Papillary carcinoma is the most prevalent type of thyroid cancer. Its diagnosis requires accurate and subjective analyses from expert pathologists. Here we propose a method based on the Hough transform (HT) to detect and objectively quantify local structural differences in collagen thyroid nodule capsules. Second harmonic generation (SHG) microscopy images were acquired on non-stained histological sections of capsule fragments surrounding the healthy thyroid gland and benign and tumoral/malignant nodules. The HT was applied to each SHG image to extract numerical information on the organization of the collagen architecture in the tissues under analysis. Results show that control thyroid capsule samples present a non-organized structure composed of wavy collagen distribution with local orientations. On the opposite, in capsules surrounding malignant nodules, a remodeling of the collagen network takes place and local undulations disappear, resulting in an aligned pattern with a global preferential orientation. The HT procedure was able to quantitatively differentiate thyroid capsules from capsules surrounding papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) nodules. Moreover, the algorithm also reveals that the collagen arrangement of the capsules surrounding benign nodules significantly differs from both the thyroid control and PTC nodule capsules. Combining SHG imaging with the HT results thus in an automatic and objective tool to discriminate between the pathological modifications that affect the capsules of thyroid nodules across the progressions of PTC, with potential to be used in clinical settings to complement current state-of-the-art diagnostic methods.

RESUMO

Photochemistry of 3- and 4-methoxyphenyl azide at 266 nm has been studied by means of the complete active space self-consistent field (CASSCF) and multi-configurational second-order perturbation (MS-CASPT2) methods. Minima and interstate crossing points have been optimized using the CASSCF method. The calculations predict that the key step of the photolysis of both azides is a non-radiative process. However, an important difference is found when we compare the reactivity of both isomers of azide, deactivation of 3-methoxyphenyl azide (1) can occur via two reaction channels (internal conversion or intersystem crossing), which lead to formation of the dimer of 2H-azepine derivative (2a) and 3,3'-dimethoxyazobenzene (2b). In contrast, deactivation of 4-methoxyphenyl azide (3) takes place via a singlet to triplet intersystem crossing, which leads to formation of 4,4'-dimethoxyazobenzene (4). After initial deactivation, both isomers follow a cascade of surface crossings until they reach the final nitrenes, respectively. The reference active space for the two azides is 14 electrons in 13 orbitals and comprises the six π-type orbitals of the aromatic ring plus four σ-(N-N2) and five π-type orbitals of the -N3 moiety.

RESUMO

Ti:sapphire laser systems are the more extended excitation sources in multiphoton (MP) microscopy. Although tunable, the cost, size, and lack of portability often limit their use in some research fields. Femtosecond fiber-based lasers represent an attractive alternative since they are portable, compact, and affordable. Most MP applications using these devices employ wavelengths beyond 1000 nm. This work evaluates the performance of a mode-locked fiber-based laser emitting at 780 nm (within the spectral region often used with Ti:sapphire devices) for use in MP imaging microscopy. MP images acquired with this laser system have been compared with those obtained with a "regular" solid-state source. Results herein show that the images recorded with both laser sources were similar, independently of the depth location of the imaged plane. The structural information contained in the images hardly differed. Moreover, the images of deeper layers improved by means of adaptive optics were also similar. These ultrafast laser sources are expected to enhance the impact of MP microscopy in basic research, as well as in biomedical environments.

RESUMO

The photochemical decomposition of 4-methoxyphenyl azide (CH3O-Ph-N3) is investigated using multiconfigurational second-order perturbation theory (MS-CASPT2). In addition, the multi-state resonance Raman spectra of the reactant, intermediates, and product are computed with a multi-state version of the vibronic theory of Albrecht. The results support that the key step of the photolysis of the parent azide is a 21A'/23A'' intersystem crossing which in a second step decays through a 23A''/13A'' conical intersection to give directly the formation of triplet 4-methoxyphenyl nitrene (CH3O-Ph-N) in its lowest electronic state, 13A''. It is found that the efficiency of the cited intersystem crossing is enhanced by the close presence of a 21A'/21A'' conical intersection. On the other hand, the calculated spectra suggest that the only two species which would be observed in the gas phase experiments are the triplet nitrene plus 4,4'-dimethoxyazobenzene.

RESUMO

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectroscopy of pyridazine shows the selective enhancement of the bands recorded at about 1570, 1450 and 380 cm-1, which are assigned to two different types of vibrations. The first two correspond to in-plane 8a;νring and 19b;δ(CH) totally symmetric A1 modes, respectively, while the last band is assigned to the out-of-plane 16b;τring,B1 vibration. The selective enhancement has been analyzed on the basis of a resonant Raman process involving photoexcited metal (M)-to-molecule (A) charge transfer (CT: M-A + hν → M+-A-) states of the metal-adsorbate surface complex, which have also been related to the doublet electronic states of the corresponding radical anion of the adsorbate (A-). According to the selection rules of the electromagnetic/plasmonic SERS enhancement mechanism, the simultaneous enhancement of in-plane and out-of-plane modes could be attributed to different orientations of the adsorbate (perpendicular and parallel, respectively, or tilted) with respect to the metallic surface. The calculated resonance Raman-CT spectra (SERS-CT) and the vibrational wavenumbers of isolated pyridazine and of the pyridazine-Ag2 complex obtained from electronic structure calculations suggest a single type of molecule adsorbed with perpendicular orientation. The relative SERS enhancements of both in-plane and out-of-plane modes are due to Franck-Condon factors related to differences between the equilibrium geometries (A1 vibrations, ΔQ ≠ 0) and gradients (B1 vibrations, Δν ≠ 0 and ΔQ ≠ 0), respectively, of the potential energy surfaces of the involved ground and photoinduced CT electronic states. Therefore, the selective enhancement of the SERS bands of pyridazine is controlled by a general metal-to-molecule resonant CT mechanism. This conclusion supports the usefulness of SERS in studying the subtle electronic structure of charged interfaces as well as key processes such as electron transfer at the nanoscale.

RESUMO

The important biological role of collagen-based tissues and the changes produced in the fiber distribution under particular situations (surgery, pathology, external damage, etc.) require tools for the analysis of the collagen organization that might potentially help in early diagnoses. Since collagen structures provide efficient second harmonic generation (SHG) signals, SHG microscopy has emerged as a powerful technique to visualize collagen fibers and qualitatively discriminate normal from abnormal tissues. Here we propose a quantitative method based on the structure tensor to quantify the different organization of collagen patterns in SHG images of ocular tissues. Results show that well-organized collagen distributions present a high degree of isotropy (DoI), a dominant orientation (PO), and a low structural dispersion (SD). On the other hand, the PO vanishes when the collagen tissue is not organized as a consequence of an increase in the SD and a decrease in the DoI. The proposed method is also able to discriminate partially organized samples. The combination of SHG microscopy and the structure tensor is a useful method to objectively classify collagen distributions. Clinical applications of this technique could help in the diagnosis and tracking of pathologies related to collagen disorders in connective tissue.

RESUMO

Arduino microcontrollers are used for a wide range of technological and biomedical applications, such as image classification, computer vision, brain-computer interaction and vision experiments. Here, we present a new cost-effective mini-device based on RGB LED flicker stimulation for the assessment of the chromatic temporal resolution of the visual function based on the concept of critical flicker fusion frequency (CFF). The assembly of the device and its testing in thirty young subjects demonstrate the steady white visual perception of a trichromatic flicker stimulus (mixture of red, green and blue stimuli) beyond the CFF. Macular function as measured by photo-stress recovery time (PRT) was found to be independent of the CFF measurements for red, green and blue lights. However, a statistical correlation was found between the contrast modulation for CFF for red and green stimuli and PRT. Finally, wavefront measurements demonstrate that high-order aberrations improve the temporal resolution of the visual function.

RESUMO

The optical quality of an image depends on both the optical properties of the imaging system and the physical properties of the medium the light passes while travelling from the object to the image plane. The computation of the point spread function (PSF) associated to the optical system is often used to assess the image quality. In a non-ideal optical system, the PSF is affected by aberrations that distort the final image. Moreover, in the presence of turbid media, the scattering phenomena spread the light at wide angular distributions that contribute to reduce contrast and sharpness. If the mathematical degradation operator affecting the recorded image is known, the image can be restored through deconvolution methods. In some scenarios, no (or partial) information on the PSF is available. In those cases, blind deconvolution approaches arise as useful solutions for image restoration. In this work, a new blind deconvolution method is proposed to restore images using spherical aberration (SA) and scatter-based kernel filters. The procedure was evaluated in different microscopy images. The results show the capability of the algorithm to detect both degradation coefficients (i.e., SA and scattering) and to restore images without information on the real PSF.

RESUMO

Spatial aspects of visual performance are usually evaluated through visual acuity charts and contrast sensitivity (CS) tests. CS tests are generated by vanishing the contrast level of the visual charts. However, the quality of retinal images can be affected by both ocular aberrations and scattering effects and none of those factors are incorporated as parameters in visual tests in clinical practice. We propose a new computational methodology to generate visual acuity charts affected by ocular scattering effects. The generation of glare effects on the visual tests is reached by combining an ocular straylight meter methodology with the Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage's (CIE) general disability glare formula. A new function for retinal contrast assessment is proposed, the subjective straylight function (SSF), which provides the maximum tolerance to the perception of straylight in an observed visual acuity test. Once the SSF is obtained, the subjective straylight index (SSI) is defined as the area under the SSF curve. Results report the normal values of the SSI in a population of 30 young healthy subjects (19 ± 1 years old), a peak centered at SSI = 0.46 of a normal distribution was found. SSI was also evaluated as a function of both spatial and temporal aspects of vision. Ocular wavefront measures revealed a statistical correlation of the SSI with defocus and trefoil terms. In addition, the time recovery (TR) after induced total disability glare and the SSI were related; in particular, the higher the RT, the greater the SSI value for high- and mid-contrast levels of the visual test. No relationships were found for low contrast visual targets. To conclude, a new computational method for retinal contrast assessment as a function of ocular straylight was proposed as a complementary subjective test for visual function performance.

RESUMO

Objective.A detailed analysis of the corneal retardation timeτas a highly related parameter to the intraocular pressure (IOP), and its plausible role as an indicator of ocular hypertension disease.Approach.A simple theoretical expression forτis derived within the corneal viscoelastic model of Kelvin-Voigt with 3 elements. This retardation time can be easily calculated from the well-known signal and pressure amplitudes of non-contact tonometers like the Ocular Response Analyzer (ORA). Then, a population-based study was performed where 100 subjects aged from 18 to 30 were analyzed (within this group, about 10% had an elevated IOP with more than 21 mmHg).Main results.A clear relationship between the corneal retardation time and the corneal-compensated intraocular pressure (IOPcc) was found, underlying the risk for ocular hypertensive (OHT) subjects with lowerτvalues to develop hypertension illnesses (due to the inability of poorly viscoelastic corneas to absorb IOP fluctuations, resulting in probable optic nerve damage).Significance.Our results might provide an useful tool to systematically discern which OHT patients (and even those with normal IOP values) are more likely to suffer glaucoma progression and, consequently, ensure an early diagnosis.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To evaluate alterations of the choroid in patients with a neurodegenerative disease versus healthy controls, a custom algorithm based on superpixel segmentation was used. DESIGN: A cross-sectional study was conducted on data obtained in a previous cohort study. SUBJECTS: Swept-source optical coherence tomography (OCT) B-scan images obtained using a Triton (Topcon, Japan) device were compiled according to current OSCAR IB and APOSTEL OCT image quality criteria. Images were included from three cohorts: multiple sclerosis (MS) patients, Parkinson disease (PD) patients, and healthy subjects. Only patients with early-stage MS and PD were included. METHODS: In total, 104 OCT B-scan images were processed using a custom superpixel segmentation (SpS) algorithm to detect boundary limits in the choroidal layer and the optical properties of the image. The algorithm groups pixels with similar structural properties to generate clusters with similar meaningful properties. MAIN OUTCOMES: SpS selects and groups the superpixels in a segmented choroidal area, computing the choroidal optical image density (COID), measured as the standard mean gray level, and the total choroidal area (CA), measured as px2. RESULTS: The CA and choroidal density (CD) were significantly reduced in the two neurodegenerative disease groups (higher in PD than in MS) versus the healthy subjects (p < 0.001); choroidal area was also significantly reduced in the MS group versus the healthy subjects. The COID increased significantly in the PD patients versus the MS patients and in the MS patients versus the healthy controls (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: The SpS algorithm detected choroidal tissue boundary limits and differences optical density in MS and PD patients versus healthy controls. The application of the SpS algorithm to OCT images potentially acts as a non-invasive biomarker for the early diagnosis of MS and PD.

RESUMO

Peripheral refraction can lead to the development of myopia. The aim of this study was to compare relative peripheral refraction (RPR) in the same cohort of uncorrected (WCL) and corrected eyes with two different soft contact lenses (CL) designed for myopia control, and to analyze RPR depending on the patient's refraction. A total of 228 myopic eyes (114 healthy adult subjects) (−0.25 D to −10.00 D) were included. Open-field autorefraction was used to measure on- and off- axis refractions when uncorrected and corrected with the two CLs (dual focus (DF) and extended depth of focus (EDOF)). The RPR was measured every 10° out to 30° in a temporal-nasal orientation and analyzed as a component of the power vector (M). The average RPR for all subjects was hyperopic when WCL and when corrected with EDOF CL design, but changed to a myopic RPR when corrected with DF design. Significant differences were found between RPR curves with both CLs in all the eccentricities (Bonferroni correction p < 0.008, except 10°N). An incremental relationship between relative peripheral refraction at 30 degrees and myopia level was found. It is concluded that the two CLs work differently at the periphery in order to achieve myopia control.

RESUMO

The full assessment of the visual system must include the evaluation of the optical quality of the eye and neural visual functions. The objective evaluation of the retinal image quality is often carried out by computing the point spread function (PSF) of the eye. The central part of the PSF is associated with optical aberrations and the peripheral areas with scattering contributions. In that sense, visual acuity and contrast sensitivity function tests can be considered the perceptual neural response to those contributions characterizing the eye's PSF. However, in natural viewing conditions, visual acuity tests may provide good vision while contrast sensitivity tests can reveal visual impairment in glare vision conditions, such as exposure to bright light sources or night driving conditions. Here we present an optical instrument for the study of disability glare vision under extended Maxwellian illumination to assess the contrast sensitivity function under glare conditions. The limit of the Total Disability Glare threshold, tolerance, and glare adaptation will be investigated as a function of the angular size of the glare source (GA) and the contrast sensitivity function in young adult subjects.
