RESUMO

Light forces can be harnessed to levitate mesoscopic objects and cool them down toward their motional quantum ground state. Roadblocks on the way to scale up levitation from a single to multiple particles in close proximity are the requirements to constantly monitor the particles' positions as well as to engineer light fields that react fast and appropriately to their movements. Here, we present an approach that solves both problems at once. By exploiting the information stored in a time-dependent scattering matrix, we introduce a formalism enabling the identification of spatially modulated wavefronts, which simultaneously cool down multiple objects of arbitrary shapes. An experimental implementation is suggested based on stroboscopic scattering-matrix measurements and time-adaptive injections of modulated light fields.

RESUMO

This work studies two copper-based alloys as potential antimicrobial weapons for sectors where surface hygiene is essential. Effects of different alloying elements addition at the same Cu content (92.5% by weight) on the corrosion resistance and the antibacterial performance of two copper alloys were studied in an aerated disinfectant solution (0.25% v/v Aniosurf Premium (D)) by electrochemical corrosion, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectroscopy (ToF-SIMS) and antibacterial tests. Results showed that the nature of the alloying elements had a clear influence on the corrosion resistance and antibacterial performance. Electrochemical impedance results and surface analyses demonstrate the presence of organic compounds bound on the substrate and that a film covers part of the total active surface and may act as a protective barrier by preventing the interaction between metal and solution, decreasing the antimicrobial performance of copper-based materials. Low zinc and silicon contents in copper alloys allows for better aging behavior in D solution while maintaining good antibacterial performance. The XPS and ToF-SIMS results indicated that artificial aging in disinfectant enhanced Cu enrichment in the organic film formed, which could effectively stimulate the release of Cu ions from the surface.

RESUMO

Artificial neural networks are capable of fitting highly non-linear and complex systems. Such complicated systems can be found everywhere in nature, including the non-linear interaction between optical modes in laser resonators. In this work, we demonstrate artificial neural networks trained to model these complex interactions in the cavity of a Quantum Cascade Random Laser. The neural networks are able to predict modulation schemes for desired laser spectra in real-time. This radically novel approach makes it possible to adapt spectra to individual requirements without the need for lengthy and costly simulation and fabrication iterations.

RESUMO

Material systems that reside far from thermodynamic equilibrium have the potential to exhibit dynamic properties and behaviours resembling those of living organisms. Here we realize a non-equilibrium material characterized by a bandgap whose edge is enslaved to the wavelength of an external coherent drive. The structure dynamically self-assembles into an unconventional pseudo-crystal geometry that equally distributes momentum across elements. The emergent bandgap is bestowed with lifelike properties, such as the ability to self-heal to perturbations and adapt to sudden changes in the drive. We derive an exact analytical solution for both the spatial organization and the bandgap features, revealing the mechanism for enslavement. This work presents a framework for conceiving lifelike non-equilibrium materials and emphasizes the potential for the dynamic imprinting of material properties through external degrees of freedom.
