RESUMO

By definition and general agreement, smart materials are materials that have properties which may be altered in a controlled fashion by stimuli, such as stress, temperature, moisture, pH, and electric or magnetic fields. There are numerous types of smart materials, some of which are already common. Examples include piezoelectric materials, which produce a voltage when stress is applied or vice versa, shape memory alloys or shape memory polymers which are thermoresponsive, and pH sensitive polymers which swell or shrink as a response to change in pH. Thus, smart materials respond to stimuli by altering one or more of their properties. Smart behaviour occurs when a material can sense some stimulus from its environment and react to it in a useful, reliable, reproducible, and usually reversible manner. These properties have a beneficial application in various fields including dentistry. Shape memory alloys, zirconia, and smartseal are examples of materials exhibiting a smart behavior in dentistry. There is a strong trend in material science to develop and apply these intelligent materials. These materials would potentially allow new and groundbreaking dental therapies with a significantly enhanced clinical outcome of treatments.

RESUMO

This study aimed to conduct a systematic review and critical analysis of the evidence pertaining to the efficacy of laser-activated irrigation (LAI) versus ultrasonic-activated irrigation (UAI) in mature permanent teeth. A comprehensive literature search was performed using PubMed and Google Scholar. Additionally, a hand search was performed to identify relevant studies related to UAI and LAI. The search covered all articles published from January 1997 to December 2021. The identified studies were screened for eligibility using the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The included articles were then subjected to data extraction and analysis. The search yielded 1,637 results. Of these, 23 articles were included in this systematic review. All included articles were assessed for the outcomes of antimicrobial efficacy, smear layer, and dentin debris removal. The majority of the articles reported the superiority of LAI over UAI. Within the confines of this systematic review, the current evidence mandates that LAI has superior efficacy over UAI in the elimination of microorganisms, dentin debris, and smear layer from the root canal system.

The aim of this systematic review is to summarize and conclude findings to reveal the stress ranges developed by various post materials by finite element analysis. This, in turn, aids in the selection of better post material clinically. The electronic databases PubMed and Google Scholar were searched in this review by using specific inclusion and exclusion criteria. Among 14586 articles, 22 articles were included in this systematic review, as they satisfied the eligibility criteria. The search covered all articles published from 1997 to December 2021. All records identified were retrieved and imported into the Rayyan bibliographic software, which is a systematic review screening software. Later, data extraction and analysis of 22 articles were done. Twenty-two articles, which were all finite element analysis studies, were included. Among these, 18 studies used maxillary central incisor scanned models, two studies used a maxillary canine model, and the remaining two used the mandibular premolar model for finite element analysis. All these tooth models are restored with post models made of different materials. This systematic review revealed a difference in stress distribution in endodontically treated teeth when using different post materials. Among 22 studies, 15 studies evaluated glass fiber posts and the results showed that they induce less stress on restored endodontically treated teeth when compared to other posts, with maximum stress concentration at the cervical third of the root. Prefabricated posts like stainless steel and Titanium showed more stress on the restored tooth structure with stress concentration at the cervical and apical third of the root. Prefabricated zirconia also showed more stress on the restored tooth with maximum stress concentration at the middle third of the root.

This study aimed to systematically review the literature to evaluate the marginal adaptation of veneers using different fabrication methods, namely, conventional feldspathic porcelain laminate veneers (PLVs), computer-aided design-computer-aided machining (CAD-CAM) veneers, and pressed veneers. A comprehensive literature search was performed using electronic databases (PubMed and Google Scholar) as well as hand searches to identify all relevant studies related to veneers and marginal adaptation. The identified studies were screened for assessing the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The included articles were then subjected to data extraction and analysis. The search resulted in 130 articles, of which six were included in this systematic review. All included articles were assessed for adaptation of margins. Based on the findings of this systematic review, no significant differences were found in the marginal adaptation of CAD-CAM and conventional feldspathic PLVs. The marginal fidelity of ceramic veneers issuing from the various fabrication techniques was clinically acceptable.

Polymerization shrinkage is one of the dental clinician's main entanglements when placing resin-based composite restorations. None of the method can assure a perfectly sealed restoration for adhesive restorative materials; clinicians must abode problems of polymerization shrinkage and its possible ill effects. The objective of this article is to review different incremental techniques that can ruin the polymerization shrinkage stress of direct composite restoration.

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study was to compare the incidence of dentinal micro cracks after instrumentation with various types of NiTi files in rotary and reciprocating motion. MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred human extracted mandibular central incisors were taken and divided into 10 groups (n=10 teeth per group). Group 1- No preparation, Group 2 - Hand instrumentation, Groups 3,4 - ProTaper files in rotary and reciprocating motion, Groups 5,6 - ProTaper Next files in rotary and reciprocating motion, Groups 7,8 - Oneshape files in rotary and reciprocating motion, Groups 9,10 - Reciproc files in rotary and reciprocating motion. Specimens were sectioned horizontally at 3,6 and 9 mm from the apex and dentinal micro cracks were observed under a stereomicroscope. RESULTS: There was a statistically significant difference between the groups (p<0.05). There were no significant differences in crack formation between the groups (Protaper Next - Rot, Protaper Next - Rec, Reciproc - Rec); (ProTaper - Rot, ProTaper - Rec, Oneshape - Rot), (Oneshape - Rot, Reciproc - Rot), (One shape Reciproc, Reciproc - Rec); (p >.05). CONCLUSION: Least cracks were seen in canals instrumented with Pro Taper Next files both in rotary and reciprocating motion. Full sequence rotary systems showed less cracks than single file systems and full sequence rotary systems showed less cracks in reciprocating motion than in rotary motion.

BACKGROUND: Crown-root fractures of anterior teeth are relatively common but often time consuming and difficult to treat. In some cases, the clinician can complete the treatment in a single visit by reattaching the fractured fragment. CASE DESCRIPTION: In this case report, the authors describe the treatment of a complicated crown-root fracture of the maxillary right central and lateral incisors. Among the treatment options for such cases, the treating clinician considered a single-visit rebonding procedure to be the best choice. The treatment consisted of a multidisciplinary approach involving coronal fragment removal, gingivectomy to expose the margins and single-visit endodontic therapy, followed by a rebonding of the fractured fragment by means of prefabricated posts. RESULTS: Evaluation at 12 months indicated stable re-attachment of the fragments, good esthetics and good periodontal health. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: The reattachment of a tooth fragment is a viable, conservative technique that restores function and esthetics, and clinicians should consider it when treating patients with coronal fractures of the anterior teeth.
