RESUMO

The current study attempts to evaluate the formation, morphology, and physico-chemical properties of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) synthesized from Clinopodium vulgare extract at different pH values and to investigate their antimicrobial and biomedical application potential. The reduction of zinc ions to ZnO NPs was determined by UV spectra, which revealed absorption peaks at 390 nm at pH 5 and 348 nm at pH 9, respectively. The spherical morphology of the nanoparticles was observed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and the size was 47 nm for pH 5 and 45 nm for pH 9. Fourier-transformed infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) was used to reveal the presence of functional groups on the surface of nanoparticles. The antibacterial activity was examined against Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pyogenes, and Klebsiella pneumonia via the agar-well diffusion method. Comparatively, the highest activities were recorded at pH 9 against all bacterial strains, and among these, biogenic ZnO NPs displayed the maximum inhibition zone (i.e., 20.88 ± 0.79 mm) against S. aureus. ZnO NPs prepared at pH 9 exhibited the highest antifungal activity of 80% at 25 mg/mL and antileishmanial activity of 82% at 400 mg/mL. Altogether, ZnO NPs synthesized at pH 9 show promising antimicrobial potential and could be used for biomedical applications.

RESUMO

During an investigation of the fungi from the Aspergillaceae family obtained from different environmental sources in Korea, we isolated six strains, including CNUFC WJC9-1, CNUFC BPM36-33, CNUFC MSW6, CNUFC ESW1, CNUFC TM6-2, and CNUFC WD17-1. The morphology and phylogeny of these isolates were analyzed based on their partial ß-tubulin (BenA) and calmodulin (CaM) gene sequences. Based on the morphological characteristics and sequence analyses, the isolates CNUFC WJC9-1, CNUFC BPM36-33, CNUFC TM6-2, and CNUFC WD17-1 were identified as A. europaeus, A. pragensis, Penicillium fluviserpens, and P. scabrosum, respectively, and isolates CNUFC MSW6 and CNUFC ESW1 were identified as A. tennesseensis. To the best of our knowledge, the species A. europaeus, A. pragensis, A. tennesseensis, P. fluviserpens, and P. scabrosum have not been previously reported in Korea.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: To prospectively review the clinicopathologic pattern and out come in 15 patients with adolescent ovarian tumours in Military Hospital Rawalpindi between Jan 2004 to Sep 2007. METHODS: All cases of adolescent ovarian tumours reporting to the gynaecology department of Military Hospital Rawalpindi during the period of enrolment. Out of 15 cases 12 were managed surgically. Data was recorded regarding clinical presentation, patient's age, size of tumour, bilaterality, histopathology, staging if tumour was malignant and sites of extra ovarian involvement. All patients were followed up for one year. RESULTS: Majority of patients fell in the subgroup 14-16 year age. Majority harboring ovarian malignancy belonged to subgroup 17-19 years. Clinical presentation in the majority was mass abdomen and abdominal distension. Approach was transcutaneous in 3 (20%), laparoscopic in 2(20%), and open laparotomy in 10 (60%). Frozen section was performed in 3 cases. Histopathology was benign in 11 cases and malignant in 4. In 3 cases cyst fluid was negative for malignancy. In 2 cyst wall biopsy and one patient where entire cyst was removed histopathology revealed benign serous cyst adenoma/luteal cyst (26%). There were 5 cases of dermoid cysts (33.3%), one patient had bilateral dermoids, one malignant and one benign. All 4 malignancies were found to be to non-epithelial on histopathology. One case had surgery twice. Unilateral oopherectomy followed by recurrence and total abdominal hysterectomy and contralateral salpingo-oopherectomy after 2 years. CONCLUSION: This study shows the preponderance of non-epithelial tumours and high percentages of malignant germ cell tumours in adolescents. The incidence of malignant tumours in adolescents is higher than in adults. Early correct diagnosis could be reached by careful physical examination, imaging and tumour markers Surgery should as much as is safely possible be fertility preserving.

RESUMO

Bacillus pumilus strain SCAL1 is an endophytic, thermophilic plant that was isolated from the leaf of a plant, Solanum lycopersicum L., in Sindh, Pakistan. B. pumilus strain SCAL1 has usually exhibited high resistance to environmental stresses, with a growth temperature ranging from 30 to 60°C. An approximately 3.75-Mb draft genome was assembled into 68 contigs.
