RESUMO

The ecological risks of biochar-derived dissolved organic matter (DOM) to soil invertebrates at different organismal levels remains limited. This study comprehensively explored the ecological risks of biochar-derived DOM on earthworm gut through assessments of enzyme activity response, histopathology, gut microbiomes, and metabolomics. Results demonstrated that DOM disturbed the digestive enzymes in earthworm, especially for 10% DOM300 groups. The integrated biomarker response v2 (IBRv2) indicated that the perturbation of earthworm digestive enzymes induced by DOM was both time-dependent and dose-dependent. Pathological observations revealed that 10% DOM300 damaged intestinal epithelium and digestive lumen of earthworms. The significant damage and injury to earthworms caused by DOM300 due to its higher concentrations of heavy metal ions and organic substrates (e.g., toluene, hexane, butanamide, and hexanamide) compared to DOM500 and DOM700. Analysis of 16S rRNA from the gut microbiota showed a significant decrease in genera (Verminephrobacter, Bacillus, and Microbacteriaceae) associated with inflammation, disease, and detoxification processes. Furthermore, 10% DOM300 caused the abnormality of metabolites, such as glutamate, fumaric acid, pyruvate, and citric acid, which were involved in energy metabolism, These findings contributed to improve our understanding of the toxic mechanism of biochar DOM from multiple perspectives.

BACKGROUND: Two crowdsourcing open calls were created to enhance community engagement in dengue control in Sri Lanka. We analyzed the process and outcomes of these digital crowdsourcing open calls. METHODS: We used standard World Health Organization methods to organize the open calls, which used exclusively digital methods because of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). We collected and analyzed sociodemographic information and digital engagement metrics from each submission. Submissions in the form of textual data describing community-led strategies for mosquito release were coded using grounded theory. RESULTS: The open calls received 73 submissions. Most people who submitted ideas spoke English, lived in Sri Lanka, and were 18 to 34 years old. The total Facebook reach was initially limited (16 161 impressions), prompting expansion to a global campaign, which reached 346 810 impressions over 14 days. Diverse strategies for the distribution of Wolbachia-infected mosquito boxes were identified, including leveraging traditional festivals, schools, and community networks. Fifteen submissions (21%) suggested the use of digital tools for monitoring and evaluation, sharing instructions, or creating networks. Thirteen submissions (18%) focused on social and economic incentives to prompt community engagement and catalyze community-led distribution. CONCLUSIONS: Our project demonstrates that digital crowdsourcing open calls are an effective way to solicit creative and innovative ideas in a resource-limited setting.

This study employs a modified cognitive mediation model to investigate the role of health valuation and fear in shaping media attention, factual knowledge, and perceived familiarity with COVID-19 contact tracing apps. Data were collected from a national survey of 906 Singaporeans, and structural equation modeling was used to analyze the results. Findings indicated that both fear of COVID-19 and health valuation were positively associated with newspapers, television, and social media attention, with health valuation demonstrating a stronger association with each media type. This suggests that health valuation, as an intrinsic motivation, is more critical in information-seeking behavior related to emerging health technologies. However, media attention on all platforms did not correlate with factual knowledge of COVID-19 contact tracing apps, whereas attention to social media was positively associated with perceived familiarity with these apps. This result highlights the potential influence of social media in shaping public perceptions, warranting further investigation into the quality and accuracy of the information disseminated. News elaboration was found to have a positive association with both factual knowledge and perceived familiarity with COVID-19 contact tracing apps. This underscores the need for effective communication strategies to promote accurate understanding of health technologies and emphasizes the role of individual motivations in shaping media consumption and information processing.

The advancement of health apps and wearables has garnered substantial academic attention, particularly in examining why individuals decide to use or not use them. In response to the extensive body of research on this topic, we conducted a scoping review of 61 articles published from 2007 to 2022, aiming to examine the dominant theoretical frameworks and antecedents of health apps and wearables use. The findings demonstrated that the dominant theoretical frameworks within this domain were rooted in the human-computer interaction theories, notably the Technology Acceptance Model and the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology. Next, our review identified four levels of antecedents: technological, individual, societal, and policy. At the technological level, emphasis was placed on functionality, reliability, and technological infrastructure. Individual antecedents encompassed socio-demographics, personality traits, cognitive responses to benefits and risks, emotional and affective responses, self-efficacy, and digital literacy. Societal antecedents highlighted the role of social networks and social norms, while policy antecedents elaborated on laws, regulations, and guidelines that encouraged health technology adoption. Our discussion illuminated that the evolving trend of theoretical frameworks in health apps and wearables use research, initially rooted in human-computer interaction, is progressively moving toward more comprehensive perspectives. We further underscored the importance of delving into societal and policy antecedents, which often are overshadowed by the more commonly discussed technological and individual factors. In conclusion, we advocated for a multi-stakeholder collaborative network approach, as this would enable communication researchers to understand the use of health apps and wearables more comprehensively.

Root exudates can stimulate microbial degradation in rhizosphere, but it is unclear whether the rhizodegradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) occurs in corn straw-amended soil. Either citric acid or corn straw was added into PAHs-contaminated soil to investigate their effect on the removal of PAHs. Either corn straw (Y) or combined application of corn straw and citric acid (YN100) significantly (p < 0.05) enhanced the removal of soil PAHs by 8.43% and 18.62%, respectively. Both Y and YN100 treatments obviously increased the abundance of PAHs degraders and the potential hosts of PAH-ring hydroxylating dioxygenase (PAH-RHDα) genes. Interestingly, the copies of PAH-RHDα Gram-negative bacteria genes under YN100 treatment was significantly (p < 0.05) higher than those under Y treatment. The present results indicated that combined application of corn straw and citric acid could efficiently enhance the removal of PAHs in soil, mainly via increasing the relative abundances of PAH-degrading bacteria and the expression of PAH-RHDα genes in contaminated soil.

BACKGROUND: Social media and secondary distribution (distributing self-testing kits by indexes through their networks) both show strong promise to improve human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) self-testing uptake. We assessed an implementation program in Zhuhai, China, which focused on the secondary distribution of HIV/syphilis self-test kits among men who have sex with men (MSM) via social media. METHODS: Men aged ≥16 years, born biologically male, and ever had sex with another man were recruited as indexes. Banner ads on a social media platform invited the participants to apply for up to 5 self-test kits every 3 months. Index men paid a deposit of US$15/kit refundable upon submitting a photograph of a completed test result via an online submission system. They were informed that they could distribute the kits to others (referred to as "alters"). RESULTS: A total of 371 unique index men applied for 1150 kits (mean age, 28.7 [standard deviation, 6.9] years), of which 1141 test results were returned (99%). Among them, 1099 were valid test results; 810 (74%) were from 331 unique index men, and 289 tests (26%) were from 281 unique alters. Compared to index men, a higher proportion of alters were naive HIV testers (40% vs 21%; P < .001). The total HIV self-test reactivity rate was 3%, with alters having a significantly higher rate than indexes (5% vs 2%; P = .008). A total of 21 people (3%) had a reactive syphilis test result. CONCLUSIONS: Integrating social media with the secondary distribution of self-test kits may hold promise to increase HIV/syphilis testing coverage and case identification among MSM.

BACKGROUND: The association of early-life undernutrition and dyslipidemia found in previous studies may be confounded by the uncontrolled age difference between exposed and unexposed participants. The study aimed to investigate the association of early-life undernutrition and the risk of dyslipidemia in adulthood with good control of the age variable. METHODS: We took the Great Chinese Famine (1959-1961) as a natural experiment of severe undernutrition. This study was based on the baseline investigation of a population-based cohort in rural China. Undernutrition in early life was defined as being exposed to famine at younger than 3 years of age. Three approaches including Adjustment, Restriction, and Matching were applied to control the confounding effect of age. Logistic regression models were applied to evaluate the association between early-life famine and the presence of dyslipidemia. Stratified analysis by gender was also performed, and potential effect modification was tested by adding the interaction term of the famine exposure variable and gender into the model. RESULTS: Undernutrition in early life was associated with increased risk of borderline high and above (BHA) levels of total cholesterol (TC, ORAdjustment = 1.61; ORRestriction = 1.56; ORMatching = 1.87), triglycerides (TG, ORAdjustment = 1.33; ORRestriction = 1.30; ORMatching = 1.34), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C, ORAdjustment = 1.75; ORRestriction = 1.53; ORMatching = 1.77) and dyslipidemia (ORAdjustment = 1.52; ORRestriction = 1.45; ORMatching = 1.60), as well as high levels of TC, TG, LDL-C and dyslipidemia. An inverse association of undernutrition and risk of low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) was found. Female participants with undernutrition experience had an increased risk of BHA TG and LDL-C (TG: ORAdjustment, female = 1.45; ORRestriction, female = 1.39; ORMatching, female = 1.51; LDL-C: ORAdjustment, female = 2.11; ORRestriction, female = 1.80; ORMatching, female = 2.15), but this association was not found in males. CONCLUSION: Early-life undernutrition increased the risk of TC, TG, LDL-C, and dyslipidemia. Gender would significantly modify this effect for TG and LDL-C. These results emphasize the importance of nutritional conditions in the early stages of life to long-term health consequences.

BACKGROUND: Social network-based strategies can expand HIV/syphilis self-tests among men who have sex with men (MSM). Sexual health influencers are individuals who are particularly capable of spreading information about HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) within their social networks. However, it remains unknown whether a sexual health influencer can encourage their peers to self-test for HIV/syphilis. OBJECTIVE: The aims of this study were to examine the impact of MSM sexual health influencers on improving HIV/syphilis self-test uptake within their social networks compared to that of nonsexual health influencers. METHODS: In Zhuhai, China, men 16 years or older, born biologically male, who reported ever having had sex with a man, and applying for HIV/syphilis self-tests were enrolled online as indexes and encouraged to distribute self-tests to individuals (alters) in their social network. Indexes scoring >3 on a sexual health influencer scale were considered to be sexual health influencers (Cronbach α=.87). The primary outcome was the mean number of alters encouraged to test per index for sexual health influencers compared with the number encouraged by noninfluencers. RESULTS: Participants included 371 indexes and 278 alters. Among indexes, 77 (20.8%) were sexual health influencers and 294 (79.2%) were noninfluencers. On average, each sexual health influencer successfully encouraged 1.66 alters to self-test compared to 0.51 alters encouraged by each noninfluencer (adjusted rate ratio 2.07, 95% CI 1.59-2.69). More sexual health influencers disclosed their sexual orientation (80.5% vs 67.3%, P=.02) and were community-based organization volunteers (18.2% vs 2.7%, P<.001) than noninfluencers. More alters of sexual health influencers came from a rural area (45.5% vs 23.8%, P<.001), had below-college education (57.7% vs 37.1%, P<.001), and had multiple casual male sexual partners in the past 6 months (25.2% vs 11.9%, P<.001). CONCLUSIONS: Being a sexual health influencer was associated with encouraging more alters with less testing access to self-test for HIV/syphilis. Sexual health influencers can be engaged as seeds to expand HIV/syphilis testing coverage.

Either biosurfactants or agricultural wastes were frequently used to enhance degradation of PAHs in soil, but there is still not clear whether combined application of biosurfactants and agricultural wastes is more efficient. Rhamnolipid and/or agricultural wastes (mushroom substrate or maize straw) were mixed with PAHs-contaminated soil to explore their performances in the removal of PAHs. The present study showed that rhamnolipid combined with mushroom substrate (MR, 30.36%) or maize straw (YR, 30.76%) significantly enhanced the degradation of soil PAHs compared with single application of mushroom substrate (M, 25.53%) or maize straw (Y, 25.77%) or no addition (19.38%). The addition of agricultural wastes significantly (p < 0.001) enhanced concentration of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in soil. The combined application obviously improved the bioavailability of PAHs in soils and exhibited synergistic effects on concentration of organic acid-soluble HMW PAHs and the degradation rate of total HMW PAHs. Meanwhile, the combined application significantly (p < 0.01) enhanced the abundance of dominant bacterial and fungal genera being connected with PAHs degradation. The removal rate of PAHs was positively correlated with the dominant genera of bacteria (r = 0.539-0.886, p < 0.05) and fungi (r = 0.526-0.867, p < 0.05) related to PAHs degradation. Overall, the combined application exhibited a better performance in the removal of PAHs in contaminated soil via increasing their bioavailability and changing microbial communities in soil.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The current study aimed to review how digital health has been used for sexually transmitted infection (STI)/HIV prevention, testing, and treatment. RECENT FINDINGS: A scoping review was conducted by searching five databases for peer-reviewed literature published between March 2018 to August 2019. 23 out of 258 studies met the inclusion criteria and were assessed. Six studies used digital platform to enhance STI/HIV prevention messaging; four studies found that digital health can provide vivid promotional information and has been instrumental in increasing the accessibility and acceptability of STI/HIV testing; three studies reported digital health provides a channel to understand and interpret the discourses on preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and increase PrEP uptake; three studies focused on refining big data algorithms for surveillance; four studies reported on how digital interventions could be used to optimize clinical interventions; and four studies found digital interventions can be used to assist mental health services. SUMMARY: Digital health is a powerful and versatile tool that can be utilized in the production of high-quality, innovative strategies on STIs and HIV services. Future studies should consider focusing on strategies and implementations that leverage digital platforms for network-based interventions, in addition to recognizing the norms of individual digital intervention platforms.

BACKGROUND: As HIV cure research advances, there is an increasing need for community engagement in health research, especially in low- and middle-income countries with ongoing clinical trials. Crowdsourcing contests provide an innovative bottom-up way to solicit community feedback on clinical trials in order to enhance community engagement. The objective of this study was to identify facilitators and barriers to participating in crowdsourcing contests about HIV cure research in a city with ongoing HIV cure clinical trials. METHODS: We conducted in-depth interviews to evaluate facilitators and barriers to participating in crowdsourcing contests in Guangzhou, China. Contests included the following activities: organizing a call for entries, promoting the call, evaluating entries, celebrating exceptional entries, and sharing entries. We interviewed 31 individuals, including nine HIV cure clinical trial participants, 17 contest participants, and five contest organizers. Our sample included men who have sex with men (20), people living with HIV (14), and people who inject drugs (5). We audio-recorded, transcribed, and thematically analyzed the data using inductive and deductive coding techniques. RESULTS: Facilitators of crowdsourcing contest participation included responsiveness to lived experiences, strong community interest in HIV research, and community trust in medical professionals and related groups. Contests had more participants if they responded to the lived experiences, challenges, and opportunities of living with HIV in China. Strong community interest in HIV research helped to drive the formulation and execution of HIV cure contests, building support and momentum for these activities. Finally, participant trust in medical professionals and related groups (community-based organizations and contest organizers) further strengthened the ties between community members and researchers. Barriers to participating in crowdsourcing contests included persistent HIV stigma and myths about HIV. Stigma associated with discussing HIV made promotion difficult in certain contexts (e.g., city squares and schools). Myths and misperceptions about HIV science confused participants. CONCLUSIONS: Our data identified facilitators and barriers of participation in HIV cure crowdsourcing contests in China. Our findings could complement existing HIV community engagement strategies and help to design HIV contests for community engagement in other settings, particularly in low- and middle-income countries.

A field investigation was conducted to study the dynamic distribution and accumulation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in winter wheat in the surrounds of a coal-fired power plant. During March to June 2019, various tissues of winter wheat and the corresponding rhizosphere soil were collected for determination of PAHs. A clear spatial downward trend was found in concentration of Σ15PAHs in rhizosphere soil and wheat grain (194-237 µg kg-1 DM) with the increasing distance from the coal-fired power plant. Moreover, Σ15PAHs concentration in rhizosphere soil (1081 µg kg-1 DM), root (464 µg kg-1 DM) and stem (365 µg kg-1 DM) of winter wheat at regreening stage and leaf (323 µg kg-1 DM) at anthesis stage were significantly (p < 0.001) higher than that (895, 432, 287 and 265 µg kg-1 DM) at maturity stage, respectively. From regreening to maturity stage, root concentration factors (RCF) of 3- and 4-ring PAHs exhibited an increasing trend but the 5-ring PAHs showed an apparently downward trend. However, stem concentration factors (SCF) of 3- and 4-ring PAHs showed a decrease trend while the 5- and 6-ring showed first down and then stable trend. There were positive linear relationship between logKow and logSCF at anthesis (r = 0.681, p < 0.05) and maturity stage (r = 0.751, p < 0.05). Based on linear regression analysis, PAHs in grain mainly came from the transfer of vegetative tissues, and the contribution of PAHs from stem and leaf to grain was higher than that from root. In addition, the present study also found that the physicochemical properties of PAHs play a crucial role in transfer of PAHs from root to vegetative tissues and then to grain. The present research provided more comprehensive information on the fate of PAHs in winter wheat and the safety of the agricultural products.

Increasing contamination of urban soil by persistent organic pollutants is a major environmental issue. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the distribution, source and human health risk of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in different functional areas in Zhengzhou City, China. Total 130 soil samples were collected from surface layer (0-10 cm) in urban road, overpass, residential area and park in the city during January 2019. Concentrations of ∑PAH16 in the urban soil ranged from 49.90 to 11,565 µg kg-1 and seven carcinogenic PAHs accounted for 69% of the total PAHs. The mean concentrations of PAHs decreased in the following order: urban road > overpass > residential area > park. Analysis based on diagnostic rate demonstrated that PAHs mainly originated from pyrolysis sources including traffic emissions and combustion of coal and biomass. Health risk assessment indicated that PAHs in urban road in the city have potential carcinogenic risks to residents. The present study suggested that the control of urban PAHs pollution in Zhengzhou City should be strengthened.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to prospectively evaluate the association of oral microbiome with malignant esophageal lesions and its predictive potential as a biomarker of risk. METHODS: We conducted a case-control study nested within a population-based cohort with up to 8 visits of oral swab collection for each subject over an 11-year period in a high-risk area for esophageal cancer in China. The oral microbiome was evaluated with 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene sequencing in 428 pre-diagnostic oral specimens from 84 cases with esophageal lesions of severe squamous dysplasia and above (SDA) and 168 matched healthy controls. DESeq analysis was performed to identify taxa of differential abundance. Differential oral species together with subject characteristics were evaluated for their potential in predicting SDA risk by constructing conditional logistic regression models. RESULTS: A total of 125 taxa including 37 named species showed significantly different abundance between SDA cases and controls (all P<0.05 & false discovery rate-adjusted Q<0.10). A multivariate logistic model including 11 SDA lesion-related species and family history of esophageal cancer provided an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) of 0.89 (95% CI, 0.84-0.93). Cross-validation and sensitivity analysis, excluding cases diagnosed within 1 year of collection of the baseline specimen and their matched controls, or restriction to screen-endoscopic-detected or clinically diagnosed case-control triads, or using only bacterial data measured at the baseline, yielded AUCs>0.84. CONCLUSIONS: The oral microbiome may play an etiological and predictive role in esophageal cancer, and it holds promise as a non-invasive early warning biomarker for risk stratification for esophageal cancer screening programs.

In order to provide a viable option for remediation of PAHs-contaminated soils, a greenhouse experiment was conducted to assess the effect of corn straw amendment (1%, 2%, 4% or 6%, w/w) on dissipation of aged polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in contaminated soils. Backpropagation artificial neural network (BP-ANN) was applied to model the relationships between soil properties and PAHs concentration in soils. The removal rate of PAHs, enzyme activity (catalase and dehydrogenase), dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and microbial biomass carbon (MBC) in soils were investigated to evaluate the dissipation of PAHs under different ratio of corn straw amendment. The present study showed that corn straw amendment apparently accelerated the dissipation of PAHs after incubation of 112 days, especially under 4% and 6% treatments. Compared with non-amended soil, corn straw amendment significantly (p < 0.05) increased the removal rate of low molecular weight (LMW) PAHs and significantly (p < 0.05) enhanced the dissipation of high molecular weight (HMW) PAHs only under 6% treatment. Moreover, corn straw amendment increased activities of catalase and dehydrogenase, concentrations of DOC and MBC in soils, which are beneficial to the degradation of PAHs in soils. The performance of the BP-ANN model was assessed through the root mean square error (RMSE) and determination coefficient (R2). The results indicated that BP-ANN model could provide satisfactory prediction of PAHs concentration in soils during incubation period at R2 and RMSE values of 0.948, 187.4 µg kg-1, respectively. The results indicated that high amendment of corn straw was a potential option for remediation of PAHs-contaminated soils and that the BP-ANN model could successfully provide prompt prediction of PAHs concentration in soils.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are universal organic pollutants in the agro ecosystems in China, therefore, it is important to understand the uptake and accumulation of PAHs in crops growing on PAHs contaminated soils for human health risk assessments. Water management is a common practice to maintain high grain yields during wheat production. However, the effects of soil water content on the accumulation and translocation of PAHs in wheat are still not clear. The main objectives of the present study were to investigate the effects of soil water content on the accumulation of three selected PAHs (Σ3PAHs, phenanthrene, anthracene and pyrene) in wheat during whole plant growth stage and on translocation or remobilization of Σ3PAHs from vegetative tissues to wheat grains. Winter wheat (Triticum aestivum cv. Xiaoyan22) were grown on Σ3PAHs spiked soils maintaining 80%, 60% or 40% water-holding capacity during the whole plant growth stage. Plant samplings were performed at jointing, anthesis or maturity stage, respectively. The present study showed that grain yield and biomass of the crop increased with soil water content increasing. Transpiration rate of wheat leaf under 80% and 60% water-holding capacity treatments was significantly (p < 0.05) higher than that under 40% water-holding capacity treatment at both anthesis and filling stage. Soil water content and plant growth stage had significant (p < 0.0001) effects on concentrations of phenanthrene, anthracene and pyrene in winter wheat. When exposed to 0, 15, 60, and 150 mg kg-1 Σ3PAHs in soils, Σ3PAHs concentrations in the grains under 60% water-holding capacity treatment were 46.6%, 69.9%, 89.5% and 81.7% of those under 80% water-holding capacity treatment, respectively. The highest concentrations of Σ3PAHs in the crop were recorded at anthesis stage. The distribution of PAHs in different tissues of wheat varied among different soil water treatments and plant growth stages. The present study indicated that optimizing soil water content during winter wheat production could apparently reduce concentrations of Σ3PAHs in grains via influence root uptake of Σ3PAHs and translocation of Σ3PAHs from stem or leaf into grain, suggesting the potential of water management to cope with PAHs contamination in crops growing on PAHs contaminated soils.

This research aimed to investigate the alterations in extracellular (eARGs) and intracellular (iARGs) antibiotic resistance genes in response to oxytetracycline (OTC), and unravel the dissemination mechanism of ARGs during composting. The findings revealed both low (L-OTC) and high contents (H-OTC) of OTC significantly enhanced absolute abundance (AA) of iARGs (p < 0.05), compared to CK (no OTC). Composting proved to be a proficient strategy for removing eARGs, while AA of eARGs was significantly enhanced in H-OTC (p < 0.05). OTC resulted in an increase in AA of mobile genetic elements (MGEs), ATP levels, antioxidant and DNA repair enzymes in bacteria in compost product. Structural equation model further demonstrated that OTC promoted bacterial DNA repair and antioxidant enzyme activities, altered bacterial community and enhanced MGEs abundance, thereby facilitating iARGs dissemination. This study highlights OTC can increase eARGs and iARGs abundance, underscoring the need for appropriate countermeasures to mitigate potential hazards.

Health apps and wearables are touted to improve physical health and mental well-being. However, it is unclear from existing research the extent to which these health technologies are efficacious in improving physical and mental well-being at a population level, particularly for the underserved groups from the perspective of health equity and social determinants. Also, it is unclear if the relationship between health apps and wearables use and physical and mental well-being differs across individualistic, collectivistic, and a mix of individual-collectivistic cultures. A large-scale online survey was conducted in the U.S. (individualist culture), China (collectivist culture), and Singapore (mix of individual-collectivist culture) using quota sampling after obtaining ethical approval from the Institutional Review Board (IRB-2021-262) of Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore. There was a total of 1004 respondents from the U.S., 1072 from China, and 1017 from Singapore. Data were analyzed using multiple regression and negative binomial regression. The study found that income consistently had the strongest relationship with physical and mental well-being measures in all three countries, while the use of health apps and wearables only had a moderate association with psychological well-being only in the US. Health apps and wearables were associated with the number of times people spent exercising and some mental health outcomes in China and Singapore, but they were only positively associated with psychological well-being in the US. The study emphasizes the importance of considering the social determinants, social-cultural context of the population, and the facilitating conditions for the effective use of digital health technologies. The study suggests that the combined use of both health apps and wearables is most strongly associated with better physical and mental health, though this association is less pronounced when individuals use only apps or wearables.

This research evaluated the effects of calcium peroxide (CP) at 0% (CK, w/w), 5% (T1, w/w), and 10% (T2, w/w), on heavy metals (HMs) mobility and prevalence of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) during sludge composting. T1 and T2 significantly reduced (p < 0.05) the mobility of Cu (29.34%, and 32.94%, respectively), Ni (24.07%, and 31.48%, respectively) and Zn (33.28%, and 54.11%, respectively) compared to CK after the composting. CP addition resulted in a decrease in mobile genetic elements (MGEs) and ARGs during composting. Together with structural equation model and random forest analysis depicted MGEs had a primary association with total ARGs variations during composting. Microbial analysis indicated CP downregulated the expression of the genes associated with two-component and type IV secretion system, thus reducing the prevalence of ARGs. This study demonstrates that application of CP is a feasible strategy to mitigate both ARGs and HMs hazards during composting.

This study examines the proliferation of COVID-19 misinformation through Plandemic-a pseudo-documentary of COVID-19 conspiracy theories-on social media and examines how factors such as (a) themes of misinformation, (b) types of misinformation, (c) sources of misinformation, (d) emotions of misinformation, and (e) fact-checking labels amplify or attenuate online misinformation during the early days of the pandemic. Using CrowdTangle, a Facebook API, we collected a total of 5732 publicly available Facebook pages posts containing Plandemic-related keywords from January 1 to December 19, 2020. A random sample of 600 posts was subsequently coded, and the data were analyzed using negative binomial regression to examine factors associated with amplification and attenuation. Overall, the extended an extended Social Amplification of Risk Framework (SARF) provided a theoretical lens to understand why certain misinformation was amplified, while others were attenuated. As for posts with misinformation, results showed that themes related to private firms, treatment and prevention of virus transmission, diagnosis and health impacts, virus origins, and social impact were more likely to be amplified. While the different types of misinformation (manipulated, fabricated, or satire) and emotions were not associated with amplification, the type of fact-check labels did influence the virality of misinformation. Specifically, posts that were flagged as false by Facebook were more likely to be amplified, while the virality of posts flagged as containing partially false information was attenuated. Theoretical and practical implications were discussed.
