BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to assess the relationship between the triglyceride/high density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio and the risk of acute myocardial infarction in young adults. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 621 patients, who underwent coronary angiography (CAG) due to Myocardial Infarction (MI) at our hospital were included in this study. Demographic characteristics, risk factor profile, laboratory test results, electrocardiographic and CAG findings were assessed in the selected groups. RESULTS: Total cholesterol, triglyceride/high density lipoprotein cholesterol (Tg/HDL) ratio, Tg levels, were higher in younger patients with MI, while glucose and high-density lipoprotein levels were lower. Using propensity score matching in the matched population comparing young patients to the older ones, serum triglyceride levels [179 (145-231) vs 148 (101-197)] and triglyceride to high density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio [5.8 (4.1-9.1) vs 3.0 (1.8-4.6)] were significantly higher, whereas high density lipoprotein levels were observed dramatically lower (32.6 ± 8.2 vs 41.7 ± 8.8). CONCLUSION: This study demonstrated that Tg/HDL ratio may be an important predictor for an acute coronary syndrome in the young adult population. Tg/HDL ratio can be used to prevent MI in young adults (Tab. 3, Fig. 1, Ref. 32.).

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of resveratrol (RVT) on sildenafil-induced relaxations of isolated corpus cavernosum in non-diabetic and diabetic aged rats. METHODS: A total of 13 male aged rats (72-80 weeks old) were randomized into two groups including non-diabetic aged rats and diabetic aged rats. Diabetes was induced in aged rats by streptozotocin (single i.p. dose of 45 mg/kg body weight) administration. At the end of the 12th week, corpus cavernosum strips of rats were suspended in an organ bath system. The corpus cavernosum relaxation was evaluated by sildenafil in the presence or absence of RVT (10-4 M) for 45 min. RESULTS: Induction of diabetes resulted in significant inhibition of sildenafil-induced corpus cavernosum relaxation in aged rats. The diminished relaxation in response to sildenafil was significantly improved by acute RVT incubation in both non-diabetic and diabetic aged rats; however, the magnitude of potentiation induced by RVT was more pronounced in diabetic aged rats. The potentiating effect of RVT was significantly inhibited by L-NG-nitroarginine methyl ester (L-NAME, 10-4 M, for 30 min) incubation in both groups. After the L-NAME incubation, the relaxation response of corporal tissues evoked by sildenafil was found to be similar in diabetic and non-diabetic aged rats. CONCLUSIONS: RVT improves sildenafil-induced relaxations of corpus cavernosum in both diabetic and non-diabetic aged rats probably by potentiating the activity of NOS, and this effect seems to be more manifest in diabetic aged group.

BACKGROUND: Prosthetic valve thrombosis (PVT) is serious complication of valvular replacement surgery, and increased levels of anticardiolipin antibodies (aCL) are associated with thrombosis. The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of aCL in the development of PVT. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We studied the aCL IgM and IgG levels in 114 patients with PVT and 80 healthy patients with prosthetic valves without PVT or a history of thrombosis. All patients underwent detailed transthoracic, transesophageal echocardiographic and clinical examinations. Blood samples were obtained after transesophageal echocardiography. Tests were repeated 12 weeks apart in patients with aCL IgM or IgG positivity. RESULTS: The mean age, sex, presence of atrial fibrillation and cardiovascular risk factors, elapsed time after surgery, and prosthetic valve type and location were similar between patients with PVT and those without. Ineffective anticoagulation was significantly higher among patients with PVT (p < 0.001). The aCL IgM values were significantly higher and positive (> 40 MPL) in the PVT group compared with the control group (10.58 ± 15.90 MPL to 3.70 ± 2.30 MPL, p < 0.001; 7.0 to 0 %, p = 0.016, respectively). The aCL IgG values were significantly higher and positive (> 40 GPL) in the PVT group compared with the control group (12.04 ± 17.58 GPL to 3.83 ± 2.56 GPL, p < 0.001 and 7.9 to 0 %, p = 0.01, respectively). According to international consensus documents, 16 patients had antiphospholipid syndrome. Ineffective anticoagulation and aCL IgM and IgG positivity were independent predictors of PVT in logistic regression analysis (multivariate r(2)= 0.648; p < 0.001, OR= 21.405, 95 %CI= 8.201-55.872; p = 0.008, OR= 1.322, % 95CI= 1.076-1.626; p = 0.005, OR= 1.288, 95 %CI= 1.079-1.538). CONCLUSION: Since the presence of aCL IgM and IgG positivity may cause a tendency toward PVT, these values should be examined in all patients with PVT.

This descriptive cross-sectional study aimed to evaluate quality of life for breast cancer patients (n = 105) undergoing chemotherapy, and to assess their satisfaction with nursing care. It also explored relationships between quality of life, satisfaction with nursing care, and demographic and disease-related characteristics. Ethics approval for this study was provided. The research was carried out between October 2011 and June 2012. Quality of life and satisfaction with nursing care were assessed using the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-General Scale, the Memorial Symptom Assessment Scale and the Newcastle Satisfaction with Nursing Scale. We found that emotional well-being was the area most negatively affected, with patients reporting being afraid of death, feeling sad and being worried about their health. Patients were overall quite satisfied with the nursing care they received at the hospital. We found a positive correlation between total scores on the Newcastle Satisfaction with Nursing Scale and social and family well-being scores. Breast cancer patients have fears and concerns about their health and need support during chemotherapy for coping with negative changes in their emotional well-being, physical and functional well-being.

OBJECTIVES: The relationship between venous thrombosis (VT) and atherosclerosis is controversial in recent studies. Aortic elastic properties have a predictive value in detecting early stages of atherosclerosis. The aim of this study is to evaluate the relationship between aortic elastic properties and VT. METHODS: Elastic properties of aorta in patients with spontaneous VT, without history of known cardiovascular disease and cardiovascular risk factors (n: 31), and in healthy subjects without cardiovascular risk factors (n: 30) were compared. Elastic properties of the aorta were assessed with transthoracic echocardiography. RESULTS: A significant increase in aortic stiffness index (6.5 ± 1.0 versus 6 ± 0.7, P = 0.03) and a significant decrease in aortic strain and aortic distensibility were found in patients with VT compared with healthy subjects (8.4 ± 7 versus 13 ± 8, P = 0.01, 4.9 ± 4.8 versus 6.5 ± 4.4, P = 0.03, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: Elastic properties of aorta in patients with spontaneous VT were impaired. These results may support the role of endothelial dysfunction in the pathogenesis of VT.

Summary In this study, the localization and appearance of synaptophysin-immunoreactive (IR) nerve cells and their relationships with the developing gastric layers were studied by immunocytochemistry and light microscopy in the embryonic rat stomach. The stomachs of Wistar rat embryos aged 13-21 days were used. The first neuronal bodies and their processes containing synaptophysin-immunoreactivity were observed on embryonic day 13. In contrast, synaptophysin-IR nerve terminals were first observed between mesenchymal cells on embryonic day 14. These results indicate that synaptophysin is expressed in growing neurits and neuronal cell bodies before these neurones have established synaptic connections. The occurrences of mesenchymal cell condensation near synaptophysin-IR neuroblasts on embryonic day 15 reflect an active nerve element-specific mesenchymal cell induction resulting in the morphogenesis of muscle cells. Similarly, the appearance of glandular structures after synaptophysin-IR neuroblasts, on embryonic day 18, suggests that the epithelial differentiation may be closely related to the neuronal maturation as well as other factors. Finally, synaptophysin is functionally important in neuronal development and maturation, together with the establishment of neuroneuronal and neuromuscular contacts and in epithelial differentiation.
