RESUMO
BACKGROUND: This study aimed to determine whether implementing a rapid response system (RRS) is associated with improved short-term outcomes in critically ill patients with haematological malignancies. METHODS: Our monocentric pre- versus post-intervention study was conducted between January 2012 and April 2020. RRS was activated at early signs of haemodynamic or respiratory failure. The primary outcome was the reduction in Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) score on Day 3 after intensive care unit (ICU) admission. Secondary outcomes included time to ICU admission and mortality. RESULTS: A total of 209 patients with a median age of 59 years were enrolled (108 in the pre-intervention period and 101 in the post-intervention period). 22% of them had received an allogeneic transplant. The post-intervention period was associated with a shorter time to ICU admission (195 vs. 390 min, p < .001), a more frequent favourable trend in SOFA score (57% vs. 42%, adjusted odds ratio, 2.02, 95% confidence interval, 1.09 to 3.76), no significant changes in ICU (22% vs. 26%, p = .48) and 1-year (62% vs. 58%, p = .62) mortality rates. CONCLUSION: Detection of early organ failure and activation of an RRS was associated with faster ICU admission and lower SOFA scores on Day 3 of admission in critically ill patients with haematological malignancies.

OBJECTIVES: This study investigated how adults in the United Kingdom perceived their arts and cultural engagement to facilitate social connectedness over two phases in the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic. STUDY DESIGN: The study used the HEartS Survey, a newly designed online survey tool to capture arts engagement in the United Kingdom and its associations with social and mental well-being, over two phases in 2020: March to May (Phase 1) and October (Phase 2). METHODS: Qualitative data were provided at both phases by 581 respondents, who identified which arts and cultural activity they felt most connected them to others and how during the last month. RESULTS: Thematic analysis revealed that, at both phases, arts and cultural engagement was perceived to facilitate social connectedness through four pathways that were also identified prepandemic: social opportunities, sharing, feelings of commonality and belonging and collective understanding. The subthemes shed light on specific ways that respondents used the arts during the pandemic to connect with others, including using the arts: as a catalyst for conversations, to maintain, reinstate or strengthen relationships during social distancing and to facilitate social interactions (Theme 1); to bring people together through shared experiences and sharing of art (Theme 2); to elicit feelings of direct and indirect proximity to others, to connect people with common interests, to feel a sense of belonging to something and to feel part of a collective 'COVID-19 experience' or to feel collectively distracted from the pandemic (Theme 3); and to learn from and about other people and to relate to others (Theme 4). The activity most frequently cited as connecting was watching a film or drama, followed by listening to recorded music. CONCLUSIONS: Engagement in arts and cultural activities supported feelings of social connection among adults in the United Kingdom over two phases in the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic, highlighting the importance of access to the arts and culture to support social connectedness.

BACKGROUND: The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has one of the highest neonatal death rates (between 14% and 28%) in the world. In the DRC, neonatal sepsis causes 15.6% of this mortality, but data on the bacterial etiology and associated drug susceptibility are lacking. METHODS: Hemocultures of 150 neonates with possible early-onset neonatal sepsis (pEOS) were obtained at the Hôpital Provincial Général de Référence de Bukavu (Bukavu, DRC). The newborns with pEOS received an empirical first-line antimicrobial treatment (ampicillin, cefotaxime, and gentamicin) based on the synopsis of international guidelines for the management of EOS that are in line with World Health Organization (WHO) recommendations. Isolates were identified using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ ionization time-of-flight mass spectrophotometry. Antibiotic resistance was assessed using the disk diffusion method. RESULTS: Fifty strains were obtained from 48 patients and identified. The 3 most prevalent species were Enterobacter cloacae complex (42%), Klebsiella pneumoniae (18%), and Serratia marcescens (12%). Enterobacter cloacae isolates were resistant to all first-line antibiotics. All K. pneumoniae and S. marcescens isolates were resistant to ampicillin, and the majority of the K. pneumoniae and half of the S. marcescens isolates were resistant to both cefotaxime and gentamicin. All E. cloacae complex strains, 89% of K. pneumoniae, and half of S. marcescens had an extended-spectrum ß-lactamase phenotype. CONCLUSIONS: The most prevalent pathogens causing EOS in Bukavu were E. cloacae complex, K. pneumoniae, and S. marcescens. Most of these isolates were resistant to the WHO-recommended antibiotics.

MAIN CONCLUSION: Anatomical, metabolic and microbial factors were identified that contribute to sequential freezing in wheat leaves and likely contribute to supercooling in the youngest leaves and potentially meristematic regions. Infrared thermography (IR) has been used to observe wheat leaves freezing independently and in an age-related sequence with older leaves freezing first. To determine mechanisms that might explain this sequence of freezing several analytical approaches were used: (1) The size of xylem vessels, in proximity to where freezing initiated, was measured to see if capillary freezing point depression explained sequential freezing. The sequence of freezing in the four youngest leaves was correlated, with the largest vessels freezing first. (2) Carbohydrate and amino acids were analyzed to determine if solute concentrations as well as interactions with membranes explained the freezing sequence. Sucrose was highly correlated to the freezing sequence for all leaves suggesting a prominent role for this sugar as compared to other simple sugars and fructans. Among individual free amino acids proline and serine were correlated to the freezing sequence, with younger leaves having the highest concentrations. (3) Microflora within and on leaf surfaces were determined to measure potential freezing initiation. Levels of bacteria and fungi were correlated to the freezing sequence for all leaves, and species or genera associated with high ice nucleation activity were absent in younger leaves. Moisture content and transcript expression of ice binding proteins were also measured. As expected, our results show that no single mechanism explains the freezing sequence observed via infrared analyses. While these multiple mechanisms are operative at different levels according to the leaf age, they seem to converge when it comes to the protection of vital meristematic tissues. This provides potential phenotypic characters that could be used by breeders to develop more winter-hardy genotypes.

Shifting the cutting of grass from morning to afternoon has been shown to increase the concentration of nonstructural carbohydrates (NSC) in forages. We compared the effects of diets (66:34, forage:concentrate ratio) containing a mix (% of the diet dry matter) of baleages (46.5%) and silages (19.3%) harvested from timothy cut in the afternoon (p.m.-cut TIM diet) or morning (a.m.-cut TIM diet) on omasal flows of NSC and nitrogenous fractions, ruminal and total-tract digestibilities of nutrients, plasma concentration of AA, and milk yield and composition. Eight ruminally cannulated Holstein cows averaging (mean ± standard deviation) 31.4 ± 6.13 kg/d of milk, 136 ± 17.0 d in milk, and 611 ± 66.4 kg of body weight in the beginning of the experiment were used in a crossover design with 21-d periods (14 d for diet adaptation and 7 d for data and sample collection). Intake of total ethanol-soluble carbohydrates (TESC; +150 g/d), starch (+129 g/d), and total NSC (TESC plus starch = +278 g/d) was greater with feeding the p.m.- than the a.m.-cut TIM diet. Likewise, the apparent ruminal digestibilities of TESC (+149 g/d), starch (+167 g/d), and total NSC (+316 g/d) increased in the p.m.-cut TIM diet. Diets, however, had no effect on the omasal flows and apparent ruminal and total-tract digestibilities of dry matter and organic matter. Intake of N increased in cows fed the p.m.- versus the a.m.-cut TIM diet (562 and 528 g/d, respectively) despite no effect of diets on dry matter intake. Diets did not affect the omasal flows of total nonammonia N, total bacterial nonammonia N, nonammonia and nonbacterial N, and individual AA, and the efficiency of microbial protein synthesis in the rumen. Contrarily, supply of rumen-degradable protein increased (+9.2%) in cows fed the p.m.-cut TIM diet, with this response driven by the 6.4% increase in N intake. Plasma concentrations of essential and nonessential AA followed the omasal flow of AA and were not changed by diets. Feeding the p.m.- versus the a.m.-cut diet significantly increased yields of 4% fat-corrected milk and milk fat, and tended to increase energy-corrected milk, milk true protein, and milk lactose yields. Overall, feeding the p.m.-cut TIM diet to mid-lactation dairy cows did not improve microbial protein synthesis and omasal flow of AA, and these responses were in line with the lack of a treatment effect on dry matter intake.

INTRODUCTION: Rituximab (RTX), currently recommended as first-line treatment in moderate to severe pemphigus vulgaris (PV) and superficial pemphigus (PS) along with initial systemic steroids, may also be used as second-line or subsequent treatment, and this therapeutic strategy was investigated in a real-life monocentre retrospective survey. MATERIAL AND METHODS: All patients treated between January 2010 and March 2018 with RTX as second-line or subsequent treatment for moderate to severe PV or PS and followed for at least one year were included. The main objective was to evaluate rates and times of complete clinical remission (CCR) after a first course of RTX. The secondary objectives consisted mainly of treatment safety, and frequency and time to relapse after the initial CCR. RESULTS: The 24 patients selected received on average 2 cycles of RTX (i.e. 24 initial cycles and 24 additional cycles in all) over a mean follow-up period of 45 months. 18/24 (75%) patients achieved initial CCR within a mean 7.7 months. Despite at least one relapse in 13/18 initially responding patients regardless of relapse time, 59% (14/24) and 33% (8/24) were either in CCR and off treatment, or in partial remission, whether treated or untreated, according to the latest patient news, with an overall response rate of 92%. Safety was fair in these fragile patients. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: This survey of the practical use of RTX confirms its interest in moderate to severe pemphigus as a second-line or subsequent treatment, a situation that probably remains relevant even if this molecule is increasingly used as first-line therapy.

AIM: To report the early results of the Intact lesion excision system (LES) regarding feasibility, tolerance and efficiency in obtaining soft-tissue tumour samples under ultrasound guidance. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The feasibility and tolerance of Intact LES procedures under ultrasound guidance were studied prospectively in 15 patients. The procedure was performed on an outpatient basis under local anaesthesia by a single interventional radiologist with 6 years of experience and lasted around 30 min. RESULTS: The feasibility of the Intact LES for soft-tissue masses was good except when lesions were hard and calcified. Tolerance was good, with median pain experienced during the procedure evaluated at 4.5/10 (SD 2.2) and median post-procedural pain at day 1 evaluated at 1.8/10 (SD 2.5). No major complications were observed; however, for vascularised lesions, one case of acute wound bleeding and two post-procedural haematomas led to delayed pain. CONCLUSION: Percutaneous biopsy of suspected soft-tissue sarcoma using the LES device under ultrasound guidance is well tolerated and feasible. After a first non-contributing core biopsy, and especially, in the case of lipomatous lesions, it is a valuable option to consider, as is surgical incision biopsy.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: A postauthorization safety study was performed between 2009 and 2012 to describe the use of Clottafact® in acquired fibrinogen deficiency in real-life medical practice in France. MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred and fifty patients were planned for 28 days of prospective follow-up after infusion. The analysis of this observational study was descriptive and performed according to the type of treatment (curative or preventive) and the origin of the bleed. RESULTS: One hundred and fifty-six patients (16-87 years) were included in 13 centres and treated in five different medical bleeding situations: postpartum (59), other gynaecological/obstetrical (6), trauma (34), liver (13), cardiovascular (23) and other various bleeding situations (21). The mean follow-up time was 18·9 ± 12·3 days. Two patients presented adverse drug reactions: one a pulmonary embolism and the other a four-site venous thromboembolic episode. All were serious with a dubious causal relationship with the study treatment. Efficacy data were collected as a secondary objective. In 150 patients receiving curative treatment, 117 of 159 infusions (73·6%) were considered as successful by the investigators, 35 as moderate (22%) and seven as no response (4·4%). CONCLUSION: The Clottafact® safety profile observed during the study matched the known profile of fibrinogen during use.

OBJECTIVES: Unverricht-Lundborg disease (ULD) is the most common form of progressive myoclonus epilepsy. Cerebellar dysfunction may appear over time, contributing along with myoclonus to motor disability. The purpose of the present work was to clarify the motor and neurophysiological characteristics of ULD patients. METHODS: Nine patients with genetically proven ULD were evaluated clinically (medical history collected from patient charts, the Scale for the Assessment and Rating of Ataxia and Unified Myoclonus Rating Scale). Neurophysiological investigations included EEG, surface polymyography, long-loop C-reflexes, somatosensory evoked potentials, EEG jerk-locked back-averaging (JLBA) and oculomotor recordings. All patients underwent brain MRI. Non-parametric Mann-Whitney tests were used to compare ULD patients' oculomotor parameters with those of a matched group of healthy volunteers (HV). RESULTS: Myoclonus was activated by action but was virtually absent at rest and poorly induced by stimuli. Positive myoclonus was multifocal, often rhythmic and of brief duration, with top-down pyramidal temporospatial propagation. Cortical neurophysiology revealed a transient wave preceding myoclonus on EEG JLBA (n=8), enlarged somatosensory evoked potentials (n=7) and positive long-loop C-reflexes at rest (n=5). Compared with HV, ULD patients demonstrated decreased saccadic gain, increased gain dispersion and a higher frequency of hypermetric saccades associated with decreased peak velocity. CONCLUSION: A homogeneous motor pattern was delineated that may represent a ULD clinical and neurophysiological signature. Clinical and neurophysiological findings confirmed the pure cortical origin of the permanent myoclonus. Also, oculomotor findings shed new light on ULD pathophysiology by evidencing combined midbrain and cerebellar dysfunction.

INTRODUCTION: Haemophagocytic syndrome (HS) is a rare disease with a severe prognosis that is defined by clinical, laboratory and histopathological criteria. Infections represent the classical cause of HS. HS secondary to Mediterranean spotted fever (MSF) is rare with only a few cases being reported in the literature. OBSERVATIONS: We report two cases of HS secondary to MSF in 2 men aged 77 and 63 years presenting a febrile maculo-purpuric eruption with inoculation ulcer associated with laboratory abnormalities (cytopenia, elevated ferritin, hypertriglyceridaemia). Haemophagocytosis was present in 2 cases. Serology and PCR for Rickettsia conorii were positive and militated in favour of recent infection responsible for the diagnosis of MSF. DISCUSSION: The first case of HS was described in 1979. Sixteen cases of HS secondary to MSF are described in the literature. Cytopenia associated with hyperferritinaemia and hypertriglyceridaemia strongly suggests MSF complicated by HS. The prognosis depends on the time elapsed since diagnosis and host-specific factors. Immunosuppressants and antibiotics may be necessary to ensure healing. CONCLUSION: Rickettsioses can induce HS, and this potential complication with a severe prognosis must be known.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: A new fibrinogen concentrate Clottafact® was developed according to European guidelines on plasma-derived products. A post-authorization safety study was set up in 2009 as part of the risk management plan. This was a non-interventional, prospective, non-comparative, multicenter study of the use of fibrinogen concentrate for congenital afibrinogenemia in real-life medical practice in France. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The analysis was descriptive and performed on 3 subgroups: prophylaxis vs. on-demand treatment, age (<6, <12 and ≥12) and severity of the deficiency. RESULTS: Fourteen patients [1-78 years] were included in 7 centres and followed for 1 year. Twenty-one adverse drug reactions (ADRs) classically reported with fibrinogen (pallor, chills, cough, vomiting, headache, urticaria and erythematous rash) were reported in 5 of 14 patients. Two ADRs were serious: an anaphylactic shock and a subclavian venous thrombosis with a favourable outcome without sequelae. In the nine patients under prophylaxis, 365 of 367 infusions were considered as successful (99·5%) and 2 as failures. For the five patients treated on-demand, the efficacy was rated as excellent for 27 of 48 infusions and good for the 21 others. CONCLUSION: This study confirms that the benefit/risk balance for this fibrinogen concentrate is favourable.

Source contributions of organic aerosol (OA) are still not fully understood, especially in terms of quantitative distinction between secondary OA formed from anthropogenic precursors vs. that formed from natural precursors. In order to investigate the OA origin, a field campaign was carried out in Barcelona in summer 2013, including two periods characterized by low and high traffic conditions. Volatile organic compound (VOC) concentrations were higher during the second period, especially aromatic hydrocarbons related to traffic emissions, which showed a marked daily cycle peaking during traffic rush hours, similarly to black carbon (BC) concentrations. Biogenic VOC (BVOC) concentrations showed only minor changes from the low to the high traffic period, and their intra-day variability was related to temperature and solar radiation cycles, although a decrease was observed for monoterpenes during the day. The organic carbon (OC) concentrations increased from the first to the second period, and the fraction of non-fossil OC as determined by (14)C analysis increased from 43% to 54% of the total OC. The combination of (14)C analysis and Aerosol Chemical Speciation Monitor (ACSM) OA source apportionment showed that the fossil OC was mainly secondary (>70%) except for the last sample, when the fossil secondary OC only represented 51% of the total fossil OC. The fraction of non-fossil secondary OC increased from 37% of total secondary OC for the first sample to 60% for the last sample. This enhanced formation of non-fossil secondary OA (SOA) could be attributed to the reaction of BVOC precursors with NOx emitted from road traffic (or from its nocturnal derivative nitrate that enhances night-time semi-volatile oxygenated OA (SV-OOA)), since NO2 concentrations increased from 19 to 42 µg m(-3) from the first to the last sample.

Shifting cutting from morning to afternoon has been shown to increase the concentration of nonstructural carbohydrates in forages. We hypothesized that, compared with a total mixed ration containing timothy baleage and silage cut in the morning (a.m.-cut TIM), a total mixed ration containing timothy baleage and silage cut in the afternoon (p.m.-cut TIM) would improve animal performance and N use efficiency in mid-lactation Holstein cows due to enhanced supply of ruminal fermentable energy. The objective of this study was to compare the effects of p.m.- versus a.m.-cut TIM on milk yield, concentrations and yields of milk components, ruminal metabolism, and plasma concentrations of AA in mid-lactation Holstein cows. Ten (6 ruminally cannulated) primiparous cows averaging 139±13 d in milk and 550±56 kg of body weight, and 6 (2 ruminally cannulated) multiparous cows averaging 128±11 d in milk and 632±57 kg of body weight at the beginning of the experiment, were used in a crossover design. Each period lasted 21 d with 14 d for diet adaptation and 7 d for data and sample collection. The concentration of nonstructural carbohydrates (water-soluble carbohydrates plus starch) was numerically greater in the p.m.- versus the a.m.-cut TIM and averaged 13.2±1.06% and 12.2±1.13%, respectively. Treatment × parity effects were observed for milk urea N, feed efficiency, and milk N efficiency, whereas parity effects were observed for nutrient intake, milk yield, and plasma concentration of several essential and nonessential AA. Intakes of dry matter (19.3 versus 18.6 kg/d) and nonstructural carbohydrates (2.56 versus 2.31 kg/d), and yields of 4% fat-corrected milk (23.1 versus 22.2 kg/d), energy-corrected milk (25.0 versus 24.1 kg/d), milk fat (0.91 versus 0.88 kg/d), and milk protein (0.77 versus 0.73 kg/d) were all greatest with feeding p.m.-cut TIM. Milk yield (23.5 versus 22.7 kg/d) tended to increase in cows fed p.m.-cut TIM. The ruminal fermentation profiles and plasma concentrations of AA were mostly unaffected by treatments. However, ruminal valerate (1.01 versus 1.17 mol/100 mol) and plasma Gly (172 versus 188 µM) were lowest with feeding p.m.-cut TIM. Overall, feeding mid-lactation dairy cows a total mixed ration that consisted of p.m.-cut timothy baleage and silage significantly increased dry matter intake and yields of milk, milk fat, and milk protein.

Parkinson's disease (PD) involves the degeneration of dopaminergic (DA) neurons in the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNc) that is thought to cause the classical motor symptoms of this disease. However, motivational and affective impairments are also often observed in PD patients. These are usually attributed to a psychological reaction to the general motor impairment and to a loss of some of the neurons within the ventral tegmental area (VTA). We induced selective lesions of the VTA and SNc DA neurons that did not provoke motor deficits, and showed that bilateral dopamine loss within the SNc, but not within the VTA, induces motivational deficits and affective impairments that mimicked the symptoms of PD patients. Thus, motivational and affective deficits are a core impairment of PD, as they stem from the loss of the major group of neurons that degenerates in this disease (DA SNc neurons) and are independent of motor deficits.

MRI is the gold standard exploration for sudden transient neurological events. If diffusion MRI is negative, there may be a diagnostic doubt between transient ischemic attack and other causes of transient neurological deficit. We illustrate how sequence arterial spin labeling (ASL), which evaluates cerebral perfusion, contributes to the exploration of transient neurological events. An ASL sequence was performed in seven patients with a normal diffusion MRI explored for a transient deficit. Cortical hyperperfusion not systematized to an arterial territory was found in three and hypoperfusion systematized to an arterial territory in four. ASL helped guide early management of these patients.

The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of feeding alfalfa baleage with different concentrations of nonstructural carbohydrates (NSC) supplemented with a common corn-based concentrate on performance, ruminal fermentation profile, N utilization, and omasal flow of nutrients in dairy cows during early lactation. Ten multiparous (8 ruminally cannulated) and 8 primiparous Holstein cows were randomly assigned to treatments (high- or low-NSC diet) in a crossover design. The difference in NSC concentration between the 2 alfalfa baleages fed from d14 to 21 averaged 14 g of NSC/kg of dry matter (DM). Forages and concentrate were offered in separate meals with forages fed once and concentrate offered 3 times daily. Except for the molar proportion of valerate, which was lowest in cows fed the high-NSC diet, no other changes in ruminal fermentation were observed. Omasal flows of most nitrogenous fractions, including bacterial nonammonia N and AA, were not affected by treatments. Apparent ruminal digestibilities of neutral and acid detergent fiber and N were lowest, whereas that of total ethanol-soluble carbohydrates was highest when feeding the high-NSC diet. Postruminal digestibilities of DM, organic matter, fiber, and N were highest in cows fed the high-NSC diet, resulting in no difference in total-tract digestibilities. Total-tract digestibility of total ethanol-soluble carbohydrates was highest in cows fed the high-NSC diet, but that of starch did not differ across treatments. Although milk yield and total DM intake did not differ between treatments, yields of milk fat and 4% fat-corrected milk decreased significantly in cows fed the high-NSC diet. Milk concentration of urea N was lowest, and that of ruminal NH3-N highest, in cows fed the high-NSC diet. Plasma urea N concentration tended to be decreased in cows fed the high-NSC diet, but concentrations of AA were not affected by treatments, with the exception of Asp and Cys, both of which were lowest in cows fed the low-NSC diet. Feeding diets with contrasting NSC concentrations did not improve milk production, N utilization, or bacterial protein synthesis, possibly because intakes of NSC and DM were similar between treatments. Overall, results from the current study should be interpreted cautiously because of the lack of difference in dietary NSC intake between treatments and reduced N and fiber intakes when feeding the high-NSC diet.

The development of personalised training programmes is crucial in the management of obesity. We evaluated the ability of 2 heart rate variability analyses to determine ventilatory thresholds (VT) in obese adolescents. 20 adolescents (mean age 14.3±1.6 years and body mass index z-score 4.2±0.1) performed an incremental test to exhaustion before and after a 9-month multidisciplinary management programme. The first (VT1) and second (VT2) ventilatory thresholds were identified by the reference method (gas exchanges). We recorded RR intervals to estimate VT1 and VT2 from heart rate variability using time-domain analysis and time-varying spectral-domain analysis. The coefficient correlations between thresholds were higher with spectral-domain analysis compared to time-domain analysis: Heart rate at VT1: r=0.91 vs. =0.66 and VT2: r=0.91 vs. =0.66; power at VT1: r=0.91 vs. =0.74 and VT2: r=0.93 vs. =0.78; spectral-domain vs. time-domain analysis respectively). No systematic bias in heart rate at VT1 and VT2 with standard deviations <6 bpm were found, confirming that spectral-domain analysis could replace the reference method for the detection of ventilatory thresholds. Furthermore, this technique is sensitive to rehabilitation and re-training, which underlines its utility in clinical practice. This inexpensive and non-invasive tool is promising for prescribing physical activity programs in obese adolescents.

In this study, historical data available since 1954 were used to get new insight to ontogenetic and spatiotemporal variability in Peruvian anchovy or anchoveta Engraulis ringens diet. Whatever the period, E. ringens foraged mainly on macrozooplankton and the importance of euphausiids in E. ringens diet appears directly related to euphausiids abundance. This bottom-up effect is also observed at smaller scale because the euphausiids fraction increased with E. ringens total length and euphausiids accessibility. Selecting the largest prey, the euphausiids, provides an energetic advantage for E. ringens in its ecosystem where oxygen depletion imposes strong metabolic constraints on pelagic fishes. This study illustrates the plasticity of E. ringens that allows it to cope with its highly variable environment.
