RESUMO

In this work we show an optical fiber evanescent wave absorption probe for glucose detection in different physiological media. High selectivity is achieved by functionalizing the surface of an only-core poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) polymer optical fiber with phenilboronic groups, and enhanced sensitivity by using a U-shaped geometry. Employing a supercontinuum light source and a high-resolution spectrometer, absorption measurements are performed in the broadband visible light spectrum. Experimental results suggest the feasibility of such a fiber probe as a low-cost and selective glucose detector.

RESUMO

In this work we analyze experimentally and theoretically the properties of amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) in a rhodamine-6G-doped graded-index polymer optical fiber. A theoretical model based on the laser rate equations describes the ASE features successfully. The dependence of the ASE threshold and efficiency on fiber length is analyzed in detail.

RESUMO

In this work we have analyzed theoretically and experimentally the critical angle for the emission generated in doped polymer optical fibers as a function of different launching conditions by using the side-illumination fluorescence technique. A theoretical model has been developed in order to explain the experimental measurements. It is shown that both the theoretical and experimental critical angles are appreciably higher than the meridional critical angle corresponding to the maximum acceptance angle for a single source placed at the fiber axis. This increase changes the value of several important parameters in the performance of active fibers. The analysis has been performed in polymer optical fibers doped with a conjugated polymer.

RESUMO

The aim of this paper is to investigate the properties of the inhomogeneities that give rise to light scattering in polymer optical fibers (POFs). We perform several measurements in two commercial POFs of identical characteristics: these measurements, based on the side-illumination technique, consist in the detection of the total amount of scattered light guided along a POF sample under different launching conditions and in the acquisition of the corresponding near- and far-field patterns. We carry out complementary computer simulations considering inhomogeneities of different sizes at different positions inside the POF. The comparison of these simulated results with the experimental measurements will provide us with valuable information about the size and placement of the most influential inhomogeneities.

RESUMO

The performance of a precisely controlled drilling technique is critical in the fabrication process of microstructured polymer optical fibres. For the creation of a holey preform, adequate drilling bits with large length-to-diameter ratios provide the ability of machining preforms with complex structures and large lengths in a relatively short time. In this work, we analysed different drilling bits and techniques that can be employed for the creation of such preforms, and key parameters characterising the quality of the drilled holes, such as surface rugosity, diameter deviation, coaxiality and cylindricity were measured. For this purpose, based on theoretical simulations, four rings of air holes arranged in a hexagonal pattern were drilled in the preforms with different drill bits, and the experimental results for the above mentioned parameters have been presented. Additionally, optical power distribution of the fabricated microstructured polymer optical fibres was theoretically calculated and experimentally measured.
