BACKGROUND: Bothrops atrox is a pit viper with a loreal pit organ, and its embryological development remains undescribed. Here, we provide a comprehensive description of the embryology of B. atrox, focusing on the loreal pit organ and cephalic scales. RESULTS: We characterized 13 developmental stages of B. atrox based on external features consistent with the embryogenesis of previously described snake species. The loreal pit organ originates from the circumorbital region and migrates to its final position. In Crotalinae, the pit organ first becomes visible at stage 28, whereas in Pythonidae labial, pit organs appear at Stage 35. Pit organs evolved independently three times in Serpentes, encompassing Boidae, Pythonidae, and Crotalinae. Boidae lacks embryological information for pit organs. Furthermore, we observed that head scalation onset occurs at Stage 33 in B. atrox, with fusion of scales surrounding the loreal pit organ. CONCLUSIONS: The embryology of pit organs in Pythonidae and Boidae species remains poorly understood. Our detailed embryological descriptions are critical for proposing developmental scenarios for pit organs and guiding future research on these structures.

The data available for reconstructing molecular phylogenies have become wildly disparate. Phylogenomic studies can generate data for thousands of genetic markers for dozens of species, but for hundreds of other taxa, data may be available from only a few genes. Can these two types of data be integrated to combine the advantages of both, addressing the relationships of hundreds of species with thousands of genes? Here, we show that this is possible, using data from frogs. We generated a phylogenomic data set for 138 ingroup species and 3,784 nuclear markers (ultraconserved elements [UCEs]), including new UCE data from 70 species. We also assembled a supermatrix data set, including data from 97% of frog genera (441 total), with 1-307 genes per taxon. We then produced a combined phylogenomic-supermatrix data set (a "gigamatrix") containing 441 ingroup taxa and 4,091 markers but with 86% missing data overall. Likelihood analysis of the gigamatrix yielded a generally well-supported tree among families, largely consistent with trees from the phylogenomic data alone. All terminal taxa were placed in the expected families, even though 42.5% of these taxa each had >99.5% missing data and 70.2% had >90% missing data. Our results show that missing data need not be an impediment to successfully combining very large phylogenomic and supermatrix data sets, and they open the door to new studies that simultaneously maximize sampling of genes and taxa.

RESUMO

The impact of preserved museum specimens is transforming and increasing by three-dimensional (3D) imaging that creates high-fidelity online digital specimens. Through examples from the openVertebrate (oVert) Thematic Collections Network, we describe how we created a digitization community dedicated to the shared vision of making 3D data of specimens available and the impact of these data on a broad audience of scientists, students, teachers, artists, and more. High-fidelity digital 3D models allow people from multiple communities to simultaneously access and use scientific specimens. Based on our multiyear, multi-institution project, we identify significant technological and social hurdles that remain for fully realizing the potential impact of digital 3D specimens.

Frogs (Anura) are one of the most diverse vertebrate orders, comprising more than 7,000 species with a worldwide distribution and extensive ecological diversity. In contrast to other tetrapods, frogs have a highly derived body plan and simplified skull. In many lineages of anurans, increased mineralization has led to hyperossified skulls, but the function of this trait and its relationship with other aspects of head morphology are largely unexplored. Using three-dimensional morphological data from 158 species representing all frog families, we assessed wide-scale patterns of shape variation across all major lineages, reconstructed the evolutionary history of cranial hyperossification across the anuran phylogeny, and tested for relationships between ecology, skull shape, and hyperossification. Although many frogs share a conserved skull shape, several extreme forms have repeatedly evolved that commonly are associated with hyperossification, which has evolved independently more than 25 times. Variation in cranial shape is not explained by phylogenetic relatedness but is correlated with shifts in body size and ecology. The species with highly divergent, hyperossified skulls often have a specialized diet or a unique predator defense mechanism. Thus, the evolution of hyperossification has repeatedly facilitated the expansion of the head into multiple new shapes and functions.

Secondary sympatry amongst sister lineages is strongly associated with genetic and ecological divergence. This pattern suggests that for closely related species to coexist in secondary sympatry, they must accumulate differences in traits that mediate ecological and/or reproductive isolation. Here, we characterized inter- and intraspecific divergence in three giant tree frog species whose distributions stretch across West and Central Africa. Using genome-wide single-nucleotide polymorphism data, we demonstrated that species-level divergence coincides temporally and geographically with a period of large-scale forest fragmentation during the late Pliocene. Our environmental niche models further supported a dynamic history of climatic suitability and stability, and indicated that all three species occupy distinct environmental niches. We found modest morphological differentiation amongst the species with significant divergence in tympanum diameter and male advertisement call. In addition, we confirmed that two species occur in secondary sympatry in Central Africa but found no evidence of hybridization. These patterns support the hypothesis that cycles of genetic exchange and isolation across West and Central Africa have contributed to globally significant biodiversity. Furthermore, divergence in both ecology and reproductive traits appear to have played important roles in maintaining distinct lineages. At the intraspecific level, we found that climatic refugia, precipitation gradients, marine incursions, and potentially riverine barriers generated phylogeographic structure throughout the Pleistocene and into the Holocene. Further studies examining phenotypic divergence and secondary contact amongst these geographically structured populations may demonstrate how smaller scale and more recent biogeographic barriers contribute to regional diversification.


La sympatrie secondaire parmi les espèces sœurs est fortement associée à la divergence génétique et écologique. Ce modèle suggère que pour que des espèces étroitement liées coexistent en sympatrie secondaire, elles doivent accumuler des différences dans les traits qui contribuent à l'isolement écologique ou reproductif. Ici, nous avons caractérisé la divergence inter- et intra-spécifique chez trois espèces de grenouilles arboricoles géantes dont les distributions s'étendent à travers l'Afrique de l'Ouest et Centrale. Avec des données génétiques, nous avons démontré que la divergence au niveau des espèces coïncide temporellement et géographiquement avec une période de fragmentation forestière à la fin du Pliocène. Nos modèles de niches environnementales ont soutenu une histoire dynamique de stabilité climatique, et ont indiqué que les trois espèces occupent des niches environnementales distinctes. Nous avons trouvé une différenciation morphologique modeste parmi les trois espèces mais une divergence significative dans le diamètre du tympan et les cris des mâles. In tetrapods, fusion between elements of the appendicular skeleton is thought to facilitate rapid movements during running, flying, and jumping. Although such fusion is widespread, frogs stand out because adults of all living species exhibit fusion of the zeugopod elements (radius and ulna, tibia and fibula), regardless of jumping ability or locomotor mode. To better understand what drives the maintenance of limb bone fusion in frogs, we use finite element modeling methods to assess the functional consequences of fusion in the anuran radioulna, the forearm bone of frogs that is important to both locomotion and mating behavior (amplexus). Using CT scans of museum specimens, measurement tools, and mesh-editing software, we evaluated how different degrees of fusion between the radius and ulna affect the von Mises stress and bending resistance of the radioulna in three loading scenarios: landing, amplexus, and long-axis loading conditions. We find that the semi-fused state observed in the radioulna exhibits less von Mises stress and more resistance to bending than unfused or completely fused models in all three scenarios. Our results suggest that radioulna morphology is optimized to minimize von Mises stress across different loading regimes while also minimizing volume. We contextualize our findings in an evaluation of the diversity of anuran radioulnae, which reveals unique, permanent pronation of the radioulna in frogs and substantial variation in wall thickness. This work provides new insight into the functional consequences of limb bone fusion in anuran evolution.

Zoos and natural history museums are both collections-based institutions with important missions in biodiversity research and education. Animals in zoos are a repository and living record of the world's biodiversity, whereas natural history museums are a permanent historical record of snapshots of biodiversity in time. Surprisingly, despite significant overlap in institutional missions, formal partnerships between these institution types are infrequent. Life history information, pedigrees, and medical records maintained at zoos should be seen as complementary to historical records of morphology, genetics, and distribution kept at museums. Through examining both institution types, we synthesize the benefits and challenges of cross-institutional exchanges and propose actions to increase the dialog between zoos and museums. With a growing recognition of the importance of collections to the advancement of scientific research and discovery, a transformational impact could be made with long-term investments in connecting the institutions that are caretakers of living and preserved animals.

Biodiversity loss is one major outcome of human-mediated ecosystem disturbance. One way that humans have triggered wildlife declines is by transporting disease-causing agents to remote areas of the world. Amphibians have been hit particularly hard by disease due in part to a globally distributed pathogenic chytrid fungus (Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis [Bd]). Prior research has revealed important insights into the biology and distribution of Bd; however, there are still many outstanding questions in this system. Although we know that there are multiple divergent lineages of Bd that differ in pathogenicity, we know little about how these lineages are distributed around the world and where lineages may be coming into contact. Here, we implement a custom genotyping method for a global set of Bd samples. This method is optimized to amplify and sequence degraded DNA from noninvasive skin swab samples. We describe a divergent lineage of Bd, which we call BdASIA3, that appears to be widespread in Southeast Asia. This lineage co-occurs with the global panzootic lineage (BdGPL) in multiple localities. Additionally, we shed light on the global distribution of BdGPL and highlight the expanded range of another lineage, BdCAPE. Finally, we argue that more monitoring needs to take place where Bd lineages are coming into contact and where we know little about Bd lineage diversity. Monitoring need not use expensive or difficult field techniques but can use archived swab samples to further explore the history-and predict the future impacts-of this devastating pathogen.

BACKGROUND: A conceptual framework has been developed specifically for cost-related nonadherence (CRNA) that differs from models proposed for general medication nonadherence. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to demonstrate that CRNA studies are best explained by a conceptual framework developed for general medication nonadherence. METHODS: A systematic literature review was conducted using MEDLINE via PubMed, CINAHL, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar databases from 2008 to 2020. Articles were considered for inclusion if they were research studies, used a self-reported measure for CRNA, and provided self-reported data on factors associated with CRNA. RESULTS: A total of 58 studies were identified and included in the review. Factors related to financial pressures were consistently associated with CRNA corresponding to conceptual frameworks for both CRNA and general medication nonadherence. However, noneconomic factors, classified as moderators in the CRNA framework (i.e., patient factors, disease factors, clinician factors), consistently demonstrated independent effects, often with similar strength of association compared with economic factors. Overall, the pattern of risk factors identified in CRNA studies was consistent with general nonadherence except for indicators of poor health. Poor health was often associated with an increased risk of CRNA, whereas the inverse association is generally observed in general nonadherence studies (i.e., nonadherence higher in primary prevention vs. secondary prevention). However, the apparent disagreement was likely caused by the general population studied rather than a unique causal pathway for CRNA. CONCLUSION: Financial difficulties are extremely common among people who take prescription medications. However, current evidence is insufficient to support a conceptual framework that differs from general medication nonadherence.

BACKGROUND: Drug discontinuation (i.e., nonpersistence) is often attributed to the emergence of adverse effects. However, it is not known whether other factors increase the risk of nonpersistence when adverse effects occur. OBJECTIVES: To identify factors associated with early nonpersistence among patients experiencing adverse effects from newly prescribed medications. METHODS: A questionnaire was mailed to new users of antihypertensive, antihyperglycemic, and lipid-lowering medications in Saskatchewan, Canada, between 2019 and 2020. Only respondents experiencing adverse effects were included. Responses were compared between the nonpersistent group (i.e., people who had discontinued their medication) and the persistent group (i.e., those who were taking their medication at the time of the survey). Statistically significant factors were tested in multivariable logistic regression models. Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% CIs were reported. RESULTS: Of the 3973 returned questionnaires, 813 respondents experienced adverse -effects from their new medication and were included in the study. Of these, 143 respondents (17.5%) had stopped their medication at the time of survey completion; most discontinuations (72.1%) occurred within 1 month of the first dose. Nonpersistent patients were older, had lower income, and were less likely to be taking an antihyperglycemic medication. After covariate adjustment, 6 factors were independently associated with nonpersistence: age less than 65 years (OR 1.56 [95% CI 1.01-2.41]), female sex (1.67 [1.08-2.59]), health condition not considered dangerous (2.09 [1.25-3.51]), medication not considered important for health (6.90 [4.40-10.84]), failure to expect adverse effects before starting medication (2.67 [1.74-4.10]), and taking 2 or more medications (0.45 [0.27-0.73]). CONCLUSION: Despite the strong link between the emergence of adverse effects and early nonpersistence, our findings confirm that this association is highly influenced by several factors external to the physical experiences caused by the new medication.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this mixed methods report was to describe a pharmacist intervention to support medication adherence of patients living with chronic health conditions in a First Nations community. SETTING: The intervention took place in a First Nations community health center. PRACTICE DESCRIPTION: Multidisciplinary primary care clinic. PRACTICE INNOVATION: A pharmacist was integrated into the weekly primary care clinics to regularly monitor patients and address any medication-related issues. EVALUATION: The pharmacist intervention was evaluated qualitatively by using focus groups and interviews, and quantitatively by analyzing medication refill claims. RESULTS: The entire health care team believed that the support provided by the pharmacist encouraged the patients to take control of their health conditions and was beneficial to increasing patient self-management behaviors, including improved medication adherence. All staff appreciated the team-based model because it optimized appointment times and promoted better patient care. The patients valued having a pharmacist they trusted and with whom they had a relationship to address their concerns. In the 6 months after the date of the initial visit with the pharmacist, the median number of refill claims increased in comparison with the 6 months before. CONCLUSION: A clinical pharmacist contributes to improved satisfaction and medication adherence when integrated into a primary care team providing care in a First Nations community.

Theory predicts that sexually dimorphic traits under strong sexual selection, particularly those involved with intersexual signaling, can accelerate speciation and produce bursts of diversification. Sexual dichromatism (sexual dimorphism in color) is widely used as a proxy for sexual selection and is associated with rapid diversification in several animal groups, yet studies using phylogenetic comparative methods to explicitly test for an association between sexual dichromatism and diversification have produced conflicting results. Sexual dichromatism is rare in frogs, but it is both striking and prevalent in African reed frogs, a major component of the diverse frog radiation termed Afrobatrachia. In contrast to most other vertebrates, reed frogs display female-biased dichromatism in which females undergo color transformation, often resulting in more ornate coloration in females than in males. We produce a robust phylogeny of Afrobatrachia to investigate the evolutionary origins of sexual dichromatism in this radiation and examine whether the presence of dichromatism is associated with increased rates of net diversification. We find that sexual dichromatism evolved once within hyperoliids and was followed by numerous independent reversals to monochromatism. We detect significant diversification rate heterogeneity in Afrobatrachia and find that sexually dichromatic lineages have double the average net diversification rate of monochromatic lineages. By conducting trait simulations on our empirical phylogeny, we demonstrate that our inference of trait-dependent diversification is robust. Although sexual dichromatism in hyperoliid frogs is linked to their rapid diversification and supports macroevolutionary predictions of speciation by sexual selection, the function of dichromatism in reed frogs remains unclear. We propose that reed frogs are a compelling system for studying the roles of natural and sexual selection on the evolution of sexual dichromatism across micro- and macroevolutionary timescales.

The nearly 200 species of direct-developing frogs in the genus Eleutherodactylus (the Caribbean landfrogs, which include the coquís) comprise an important lineage for understanding the evolution and historical biogeography of the Caribbean. Time-calibrated molecular phylogenies provide indirect evidence for the processes that shaped the modern anuran fauna, but there is little direct evidence from the fossil record of Caribbean frogs about their distributions in the past. We report a distal humerus of a frog from the Oligocene (approx. 29 Ma) of Puerto Rico that represents the earliest known fossil frog from any Caribbean island. Based on its prominent rounded distal humeral head, distally projecting entepicondyle, and reduced ectepicondyle, we refer it to the genus Eleutherodactylus. This fossil provides additional support for an early arrival of some groups of terrestrial vertebrates to the Greater Antilles and corroborates previous estimates based on molecular phylogenies suggesting that this diverse Caribbean lineage was present in the islands by the mid-Cenozoic.

Sexual size dimorphism (SSD) is shaped by multiple selective forces that drive the evolution of sex-specific body size, resulting in male or female-biased SSD. Stronger selection on one sex can result in an allometric body size scaling relationship consistent with Rensch's rule or its converse. Anurans (frogs and toads) generally display female-biased SSD, but there is variation across clades and the mechanisms driving the evolution of SSD remain poorly understood. We investigated these topics in a diverse family of African treefrogs (Hyperoliidae). Hyperoliids display traits considered rare among amphibians, including sexual dichromatism and protogynous sex change. Using phylogenetic comparative methods, we tested if adult ecology, sexual dichromatism, and sex change were predictors of body size or SSD. We also tested whether hyperoliids displayed allometric interspecific body size scaling relationships. We found a majority of hyperoliid taxa display female-biased SSD, but that adult ecology and sexual dichromatism are poor predictors of sex-specific body size and SSD. Regardless of the groupings analyzed (partitioned by clades or traits), we found support for isometric body size scaling. However, we found that sex change is a significant predictor of SSD variation. Species in the Hyperolius viridiflavus complex, which putatively display this trait, show a significant reduction in SSD and are frequently sexually monomorphic in size. Although protogynous sex change needs to be validated for several of these species, we tentatively propose this trait is a novel mechanism influencing anuran body size evolution. Beyond this association, additional factors that shape the evolution of anuran body size and SSD remain elusive.

Frogs (Anura) are one of the most diverse groups of vertebrates and comprise nearly 90% of living amphibian species. Their worldwide distribution and diverse biology make them well-suited for assessing fundamental questions in evolution, ecology, and conservation. However, despite their scientific importance, the evolutionary history and tempo of frog diversification remain poorly understood. By using a molecular dataset of unprecedented size, including 88-kb characters from 95 nuclear genes of 156 frog species, in conjunction with 20 fossil-based calibrations, our analyses result in the most strongly supported phylogeny of all major frog lineages and provide a timescale of frog evolution that suggests much younger divergence times than suggested by earlier studies. Unexpectedly, our divergence-time analyses show that three species-rich clades (Hyloidea, Microhylidae, and Natatanura), which together comprise ∼88% of extant anuran species, simultaneously underwent rapid diversification at the Cretaceous-Paleogene (K-Pg) boundary (KPB). Moreover, anuran families and subfamilies containing arboreal species originated near or after the KPB. These results suggest that the K-Pg mass extinction may have triggered explosive radiations of frogs by creating new ecological opportunities. This phylogeny also reveals relationships such as Microhylidae being sister to all other ranoid frogs and African continental lineages of Natatanura forming a clade that is sister to a clade of Eurasian, Indian, Melanesian, and Malagasy lineages. Biogeographical analyses suggest that the ancestral area of modern frogs was Africa, and their current distribution is largely associated with the breakup of Pangaea and subsequent Gondwanan fragmentation.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the impact of the SIMPL-SYNC refill synchronization (SSRS) service compared with that of usual care (UC) on medication adherence when applied as an opt-out strategy among patients receiving chronic medications. DESIGN: This was a pragmatic randomized controlled trial. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: The study was conducted in 2 community pharmacies located in Saskatchewan, Canada. Eligible patients were chronic medication users visiting the study pharmacies. OUTCOME MEASURES: The primary outcome was the percentage of individuals achieving optimal adherence to all eligible study medications. Eligible study medications included 22 commonly used medication classes used to treat diverse conditions. Adherence was assessed for each medication class after 300 days using the proportion of days covered (PDC). Optimal adherence was defined as PDC ≥ 80%. RESULTS: A total of 488 patients were screened for eligibility, and 190 patients were included in the intention-to-treat analysis (95 in SSRS, 95 in UC). The mean age of participants was 59 years, and 34% (65/190) were older than 65 years. A total of 574 individual adherence observations representing the 22 eligible study medication classes were generated from the 190 study participants. The percentage of individuals achieving optimal adherence to all their eligible study medications was 50.5% (48/95) in the SSRS group versus 44.2% (42/95) in the UC group (P = 0.383). Similarly, no statistically significant difference was observed in a per-protocol analysis assessing people who participated fully in the service; the percentage of individuals achieving optimal adherence to all their eligible study medications was 55.1% (38/69) in SSRS versus 40.7% (33/81) in UC (P = 0.080). Patient refusal of the refill synchronization services was common among randomized patients. CONCLUSION: SSRS service failed to detect a robust improvement in medication adherence when delivered using an opt-out strategy. However, small improvements in adherence or benefits to specific subgroups of patients could not be ruled out.

Crown-group frogs (Anura) originated over 200 Ma according to molecular phylogenetic analyses, though only a few fossils from high latitudes chronicle the first approximately 60 Myr of frog evolution and distribution. We report fossils that represent both the first Late Triassic and the earliest equatorial record of Salientia, the group that includes stem and crown-frogs. These small fossils consist of complete and partial ilia with anteriorly directed, elongate and distally hollow iliac blades. These features of these ilia, including the lack of a prominent dorsal protuberance and a shaft that is much longer than the acetabular region, suggest a closer affinity to crown-group Anura than to Early Triassic stem anurans Triadobatrachus from Madagascar and Czatkobatrachus from Poland, both high-latitude records. The new fossils demonstrate that crown anurans may have been present in the Late Triassic equatorial region of Pangea. Furthermore, the presence of Early Jurassic anurans in the same stratigraphic sequence ( Prosalirus bitis from the Kayenta Formation) suggests that anurans survived the climatic aridification of this region in the early Mesozoic. These fossils highlight the importance of the targeted collection of microfossils and provide further evidence for the presence of crown-group representatives of terrestrial vertebrates prior to the end-Triassic extinction.

Direct-developing amphibians form limbs during early embryonic stages, as opposed to the later, often postembryonic limb formation of metamorphosing species. Limb patterning is dramatically altered in direct-developing frogs, but little attention has been given to direct-developing salamanders. We use expression patterns of two genes, sox9 and col2a1, to assess skeletal patterning during embryonic limb development in the direct-developing salamander Plethodon cinereus. Limb patterning in P. cinereus partially resembles that described in other urodele species, with early formation of digit II and a generally anterior-to-posterior formation of preaxial digits. Unlike other salamanders described to date, differentiation of preaxial zeugopodial cartilages (radius/tibia) is not accelerated in relation to the postaxial cartilages, and there is no early differentiation of autopodial elements in relation to more proximal cartilages. Instead, digit II forms in continuity with the ulnar/fibular arch. This amniote-like connectivity to the first digit that forms may be a consequence of the embryonic formation of limbs in this direct-developing species. Additionally, and contrary to recent models of amphibian digit identity, there is no evidence of vestigial digits. This is the first account of gene expression in a plethodontid salamander and only the second published account of embryonic limb patterning in a direct-developing salamander species.

Symbionts (e.g., endoparasites and commensals) play an integral role in their host's ecology, yet in many cases their diversity is likely underestimated. Although endoparasites are traditionally characterized using morphology, sequences of conserved genes, and shotgun metagenomics, host transcriptomes constitute an underused resource to identify these organisms' diversity. By isolating non-host transcripts from host transcriptomes, individual host tissues can now simultaneously reveal their endoparasite species richness (i.e., number of different taxa) and provide insights into parasite gene expression. These approaches can be used in host taxa whose endoparasites are mostly unknown, such as those of tropical amphibians. Here, we focus on the poison frogs (Dendrobatidae) as hosts, which are a Neotropical clade known for their bright coloration and defensive alkaloids. These toxins are an effective protection against vertebrate predators (e.g., snakes and birds), bacteria, and skin-biting ectoparasites (e.g., mosquitoes); however, little is known about their deterrence against eukaryotic endoparasites. With de novo transcriptomes of dendrobatids, we developed a bioinformatics pipeline for endoparasite identification that uses host annotated RNA-seq data and set of a priori parasite taxonomic terms, which are used to mine for specific endoparasites. We found a large community of helminths and protozoans that were mostly restricted to the digestive tract and a few systemic parasites (e.g., Trypanosoma). Contrary to our expectations, all dendrobatid frogs regardless of the presence of alkaloid defenses have endoparasites, with their highest species richness located in the frog digestive tract. Some of these organisms (e.g., roundworms) might prove to be generalists, as they were not found to be co-diversifying with their frog hosts. We propose that endoparasites may escape poison frogs' chemical defenses by colonizing tissues with fewer alkaloids than the frog's skin, where most toxins are stored.

Frogs in the genus Amnirana (family Ranidae) are widely distributed across sub-Saharan Africa and present a model system for exploring the relationship between diversification and geography across the continent. Using multiple loci from the mitochondrial (16S) and nuclear genomes (DISP2, FICD, KIAA2013, REV3L), we generated a strongly supported species-level phylogeny that provides insights into the continental biogeography of African species of Amnirana, which form a monophyletic group within the genus. Species delimitation analyses suggest that there may be as many as seven additional species of Amnirana in Africa. The biogeographic history of Amnirana is marked by several dispersal and vicariance events, including dispersal from the Lower Guinean Forest into the Congo Basin. In addition, phylogeographic patterns within two widespread species, A. albolabris and A. galamensis, reveal undescribed cryptic diversity. Populations assigned to A. albolabris in western Africa are more closely related to A. fonensis and require recognition as a distinct species. Our analyses reveal that the Lower and Upper Guinean Forest regions served as important centers of interspecific and intraspecific diversifications for Amnirana.
