Visible-light communication is a promising technology for industrial environments. However, a variety of physical effects may influence the communication quality in this potentially harsh environment: Dust and other particles lead to increased attenuation. Artificial light sources and industrial processes, such as grinding and welding, cause optical cross-talk. A multitude of reflective surfaces can lead to fading due to multi-path propagation. These three aspects are experimentally investigated in exemplary manufacturing processes at five different production sites in order to estimate the relative importance and their specific impact on VLC transmission in industrial areas. Spectral measurements demonstrate the presence of interfering light sources, which occupy broad parts of the visible spectrum. They give rise to flickering noise, which comprises a set of frequencies in the electrical domain. The impact of these effects on the communication is analysed with reference to the maximum achievable channel capacity and data rate approximation based on on-off keying is deduced. It is found that cross-talk by environmental and artificial light sources is one of the strongest effects, which influences the optical, but also the electrical spectrum. It is also observed that industrial areas differ strongly and must be categorised according to the manufacturing processes, which can induce quite a variation of dust and attenuation accordingly.

The force-enhanced light coupling between two optical fibres is investigated for the application in a pressure or force sensor, which can be arranged into arrays and integrated into textile surfaces. The optical coupling mechanisms such as the influence of the applied force, the losses at the coupling point and the angular alignment of the two fibres are studied experimentally and numerically. The results reveal that most of the losses occur at the deformation of the pump fibre. Only a small percentage of the cross-coupled light from the pump fibre is actually captured by the probe fibre. Thus, the coupling and therefore the sensor signal can be strongly increased by a proper crossing angle between the fibres, which lead to a coupling efficiency of 3%, a sensitivity improvement of more than 20 dB compared to the orthogonal alignment of the two fibres.

The intrinsic and extrinsic coupling losses of step-index polymer optical fibers are statistically examined by Monte Carlo simulations. In contrast to most existing models that linearly scale individual losses, a comprehensive analytic coupling loss model is used that also considers the interdependencies between mismatches in numerical aperture and core diameter, as well as radial and longitudinal offsets. As a typical example, the coupling losses of A4a.2 step-index multimode fibers are analyzed for an equilibrium mode distribution. The results show considerably less conservative coupling loss estimations than with traditional models, improving link power budgeting.

The structural properties, mainly the spatial variation of density and chain interaction, of melt-spun polymer optical fibres (POFs) are investigated by small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and compared to Monte-Carlo polymer simulations. The amorphous PMMA POFs had been subjected to a rapid cooling in a water quench right after extrusion in order to obtain a radial refractive-index profile. Four fibre samples with different processing parameters are investigated and the SAXS data analysed via Guinier approach. Distance-distribution functions from the respective equatorial and meridional SAXS data are computed to extract the fibres' nanostructures in the equatorial plane and along the fibre axis, respectively. Temperature profiles of the cooling process are simulated for different locations within the fibre and taken as input for Monte-Carlo simulations of the polymer structure. The simulation results agree with the SAXS measurements in terms of the cooling profile's strong influence on the structural properties of the fibre: slower cooling in the centre of the fibre leads to stronger interchain interaction, but also results in a higher density and more homogenous materials with less optical scattering.

RESUMO

We show a method for distortion-free quasi storage of light which is based on the coherence between the spectrum and the time representation of pulse sequences. The whole system can be considered as a black box that stores the light until it will be extracted. In the experiment we delayed several 5 bit patterns with bit durations of 500ps up to 38ns. The delay can be tuned in fine and coarse range. The method works in the entire transparency range of optical fibers and only uses standard components of optical telecommunications. Hence, it can easily be integrated into existing systems.

The structural properties of novel melt-spun polymer optical fibers (POFs) are investigated by small-angle X-ray scattering. The amorphous PMMA POFs were subjected to a rapid cooling in a water quench right after extrusion in order to obtain a radial refractive index profile. Four fiber samples were investigated with small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). The resulting distance-distribution functions obtained from the respective equatorial and meridional SAXS data exhibit a real-space correlation peak indicative of periodic cross-sectional and axial variations in the scattering density contrast. Simple model calculations demonstrate how the structural information contained particularly in the equatorial distance distribution function can be interpreted. The respective results are qualitatively verified for one of the fiber samples by comparison of the model curve with the measured SAXS data. Eventually, the study confirms that the cross-sectional variation of the (scattering-) density is the main reason for the formation of radial refractive-index profiles in the POFs.

We studied the amplitude and phase noise suppression properties of an all-optical regenerator for differential phase-shift keying data. A detailed analytical investigation is performed and compared with numerical simulations for different working points. The results show that both amplitude and phase can be regenerated. However, simultaneous amplitude and phase noise suppression is possible only if the phase degradation is stronger than the amplitude degradation, for instance, due to nonlinear phase noise.

RESUMO

An easy-to-manufacture setup for a displacement sensor based on plastic optical fiber (POF) is analyzed, showing computational and experimental results. If the displacement is the consequence of force or pressure applied to the device, this can be used as a force or pressure transducer. Its principle of operation consists of bending a POF section around a flexible cylinder and measuring light attenuation when the whole set is subjected to side pressure. Attenuations are obtained computationally as a function of side deformation for different design parameters. Experimental results with an actually built prototype are also provided.
