RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The Internet, particularly blogs have become an important tool for patients to disseminate and exchange information on a variety of health topics, including bariatric surgery. By virtue of its interactivity being free of judgement from health care providers, blogs expose gaps in patients' knowledge and understanding. PURPOSE: This study analyzes the main doubts expressed in blogs by patients in the postoperative period of bariatric surgery. METHOD: This is a qualitative exploratory study of 11 blogs of patients, who underwent bariatric surgery, that were available on the Internet between October 2013 and May 2017. The data were collected through a structured instrument and analyzed according to Bardin's suggestions. The sampling method used was intentional. RESULTS: Evolution of diet, weight loss, plateau effect, weight regain, physical exercises, physiological changes, complications, use of contraceptive and pregnancy were the main areas of concern. CONCLUSION: More needs to be done to educate and prepare bariatric patients for the postoperative period. The content found in blogs serves towards building better links with patients, helps them make better decisions, and provides them an opportunity to be active participants in their own treatment.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Comparing the results of the ocular self-examination performed with the aid of printed and virtual versions of an educational booklet. METHOD: A quasi-experimental study carried out in a state (public) school of a capital in northeast Brazil, with 100 students equally divided into control and intervention groups according to age, gender, schooling and economic status. Pearson's Chi-square test and Fisher's exact test were applied with a significance level of 5%. RESULTS: The results of the self-examination obtained by the virtual and printed booklets were statistically similar, except for the item 'Alterations of the pupillary reflex', in which the virtual booklet was more effective for its identification (p=0.049). CONCLUSION: The printed and virtual versions of the ocular educational booklet have similar efficacy for performing ocular self-examination.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the self-eye examination practice as a tool to promote the ocular self-evaluation. METHOD: Quasi-experimental study developed in a university of Piauí with sample of 324 students between January and May 2014. A team of thirteen researchers made observations during the self-examination followed by an ocular screening. RESULTS: There was no agreement on the hypothesis of defense that the ocular exam could help to observe the eyes health, p-value>0.3. However, the exam was considered as easy to accomplish (99.7%) and that not only the physician can perform the eye exam (99.4%). The awareness about eye care is identified as the main purpose of this booklet (97.6%), (χ2= 186.01; p=0.001). The results highlight the booklet can be used in the teaching process of self-eye examination (84.6%). Although the defense that its fulfilment can replace the consultation with the ophthalmologist (23.8%%) cannot be accepted (χ2= 46.34), the self-exam must be done routinely (82.4%). CONCLUSION: The results prove that the learning through virtual booklet is possible and supports self-care with the eyes by performing the self-exam.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To analyse the accuracy of the nursing diagnosis readiness for enhanced hope in patients with chronic kidney disease. METHOD: This is a cross-sectional study with 62 patients in the haemodialysis clinic conducted from August to November 2015. The Hearth Hope Scale was used to create definitions of the defining characteristics of the North American Nursing Diagnosis Association International. We analysed the measures of sensitivity, specificity, predictive value, likelihood ratio, and odds ratio of the defining characteristics of the diagnosis. RESULTS: Of the characteristics, 82.22% presented the diagnosis. The defining characteristics "Expresses the desire to enhance congruency of expectations with desires" and "Expresses the desire to enhance problem solving to meet goals" increased the chance of having the diagnosis by eleven and five, respectively. CONCLUSION: The characteristics, "Expresses desire to enhance congruency of expectations with desires" and "Expresses desire to enhance problem solving to meet goals" had good accuracy measures.

RESUMO

The objective was to evaluate the results of bariatric surgery in patients in the late postoperative period using the Bariatric Analysis and Reporting Outcome System (BAROS). This cross-sectional study was conducted from November 2011 to June 2012 at a hospital in the state of Ceará, Brazil. Data were collected from 92 patients using the BAROS protocol, which analyzes weight loss, improved comorbidities, complications, reoperations and Quality of Life (QoL). Data were analysed using the chi-squared test, Fischer's exact test and the Mann-Whitney test. There was a reduction in the Body Mass Index (47.2±6.8 kg/m2 in the pre-operatory and 31.3±5.0 kg/m2 after surgery, p<0.001). The comorbidity with the highest resolution was arterial hypertension (p<0.001), and QV improved in 94.6% of patients. The main complications were hair loss, incisional hernia and cholelithiasis. The surgery provided satisfactory weight loss and improvements in the comorbidities associated to a better QL. Use of the BAROS protocol allows nurses to plan interventions and maintain the good results.

RESUMO

The objective was to describe the process of development of a virtual guide on ocular self-examination for people with HIV/aids. The methodological proposal followed the five steps recommended by Falkembach: analysis and planning, modeling, implementation, evaluation and distribution. The adequacy of the printed version to the virtual required the construction of a tutorial video, adding illustrative photos for viewing possible ocular changes and interactive tool demonstrating the examination result to the user. In the first material assessment, we diagnosed failures in the layout, thus commands were replaced, unified, rearranged in an easy viewing and adequacy of language. It is possible to promote the approximation of users with prevention methods in the ocular health area through a virtual guide, contributing to develop skills and disseminate self-examination.

RESUMO

The objective was to identify the main diagnoses, related factors and risk factors regarding the cardiovascular/pulmonary responses class proposed by NANDA version 2009-2011. This case series descriptive study was performed with twenty patients who underwent bariatric surgery in a public hospital in Fortaleza-CE, Brazil. Data were collected by two intensive care unit nurse specialists through interviews, physical examinations and the reviewing of medical records, and analyzed through descriptive statistics and cross-mapping. The nursing diagnoses identified with a frequency greater than 50% were: decreased cardiac output (75%), ineffective breathing patterns (65%), dysfunctional ventilatory weaning response (55%) and ineffective peripheral tissue perfusion (75%); in addition, fourteen related factors and five risk factors were identified. We verified the need for further studies to better define the diagnostic profile of these patients in order to direct nursing care towards the early detection of complications.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the effectiveness of an educational video on deaf people's knowledge and skills about cardiopulmonary resuscitation. METHOD: A randomized trial, carried out at three schools with 113 deaf people (control group = 57 and intervention group = 56). After the pre-test, the control group was exposed to the lecture, while the intervention group was exposed to the video. The post-test occurred immediately after the intervention and was repeated after 15 days. A validated instrument was used, with 11 questions, presented in video/Libras (to enable understanding by deaf people) and in written/printed form (to record the answers). RESULTS: In the analysis of knowledge, the median of correct answers in the pre-test was similar between the groups (p = 0.635), while the intervention group had a higher accuracy in the immediate post-test (p = 0.035) and after 15 days (p = 0.026). In the skill analysis, the median of correct answers in the pre-test was higher in the control group (p = 0.031). There was no difference in the immediate post-test (p = 0.770), and there was a higher accuracy in the intervention group in the post-test after 15 days (p = 0.014). CONCLUSION: The video proved to be effective in increasing deaf people's knowledge and skills about cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Brazilian Registry of Clinical Trials: RBR-5npmgj.

RESUMO

To analyze the correlation between functional health literacy (FHL) and self-efficacy (SE) in people with type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. Cross-sectional study was conducted among September and October 2019, with 196 people with type 2 diabetes. Data were collected using the Functional Literacy in Health instrument (B-TOFHLA) and the Diabetes Management Self-Efficacy Scale for Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (DMSES). Bivariate analysis was used to verify the relationship among the constructs. Most diabetics showed an average B-TOFHLA score of 74.75, considered adequate, and self-efficacy of 4.07, high. The association between SE and FHL in the bivariate analysis found no statistical significance (p > .05), in the same sense as the B-TOFHLA score and the DMSES domains (p > .05). Constructs were not related to each other in terms of skills arising from judgments and decisions with motivational confidence by the investigated audience.

RESUMO

The objective of this study is to analyze the changes in vital signs of postoperative cardiac surgery patients, according to the referred pain intensity. This descriptive-exploratory study was performed using quantitative analysis to investigate 38 patients submitted to a first dressing change. The analysis of the data, measured before and after performing the nursing procedure, indicated that the manifestation of pain occurred at different levels. The main changes in vital signs referred to blood pressure. In conclusion, there is a relationship between pain intensity and vital signs, and the care that is delivered is indispensible to reestablishing the health state of the postoperative patient.

RESUMO

This study performed a bacteriological analysis of the liquid soap in dispensers that health professionals use for hand washing. This exploratory, cross-sectional study was developed at the hospitalization units of a medium-sized hospital in Fortaleza, Ceará, Brazil. Data were collected between May and July 2007. Fifty-nine liquid soap dispensers were analyzed, of which 33 contained the following microorganisms: Burkholderia cepacia (14), Pseudomonas putidas (9), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (3), Klebsiella pneumoniae (3), Enterobacter clocae (2), and Pseudomonas luteola (2). The units with the largest number of contaminated samples were the surgical (n=7) and the dermatological clinics (n=4). Contamination was also found in an original flask of the same lot of liquid soap used to fill up the dispensers. In conclusion, there is a need to regulate and control the quality of these products in the production lines as well as during use in hospital services, mainly because they are used to prevent hospital infection.

RESUMO

An investigation was made on the effectiveness of using semipermeable membrane on the skin of preterm infants on the evolution of weight loss and blood glucose values, water share, urine specific gravity and sodium. This is an experimental study, of the randomized clinical trial type, carried out from March to August 2008 in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of the Teaching Maternity Assis Chateaubriand (TMAC) in the city of Fortaleza-Ceará. The sample consisted of 42 preterm infants. The data were presented in tables and charts. In the application of the semipermeable membrane, the preterm infants of the intervention group (IG) had a decrease in the sodium levels and the daily flow demands, they also presented fewer hyperglycemia episodes and the urinary density was kept within normal patterns. The semipermeable membrane is, in fact, an effective therapeutic resource to minimize transepidermal water losses.

RESUMO

This integrative review summarizes nursing researches that contribute to study juvenile obesity with a focus on health promotion. 20 articles were identified in a bibliographical survey that followed the criteria: date, language, and the descriptors: nursing, adolescent, obesity and health promotion. The Pediatric Nursing Journal published seven of these papers (35%). Indexed papers were published in the last ten years in Portuguese and English. Results showed the construction of scientific knowledge in nursing that developed health promotion strategies in cases of juvenile obesity, thus contributing to the development of the profession. Showing the cumulative risk that juvenile obesity presents of turning subjects into obese adults is a precious resource to plan nursing actions for this population, and for these actions to achieve effective results.
