As the awareness on violent deaths from guns, drugs, and suicides emerges as a public health crisis in the United States, attempts to prevent injury and mortality through nursing research are critical. The National Violent Death Reporting System provides public health surveillance of US violent deaths; however, understanding the National Violent Death Reporting System's research utility is limited. The purpose of our rapid review of the 2019-2023 literature was to understand to what extent artificial intelligence methods are being used with the National Violent Death Reporting System. We identified 16 National Violent Death Reporting System artificial intelligence studies, with more than half published after 2020. The text-rich content of National Violent Death Reporting System enabled researchers to center their artificial intelligence approaches mostly on natural language processing (50%) or natural language processing and machine learning (37%). Significant heterogeneity in approaches, techniques, and processes was noted across the studies, with critical methods information often lacking. The aims and focus of National Violent Death Reporting System studies were homogeneous and mostly examined suicide among nurses and older adults. Our findings suggested that artificial intelligence is a promising approach to the National Violent Death Reporting System data with significant untapped potential in its use. Artificial intelligence may prove to be a powerful tool enabling nursing scholars and practitioners to reduce the number of preventable, violent deaths.

AIM: To investigate the effect of fasiglifam on glycaemic control in people with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). METHODS: In total, 421 people with T2DM and glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) ≥7.0% and ≤10.5% who had received only diet and exercise treatment for ≥12 weeks prior to screening were randomized to receive fasiglifam 25 or 50 mg or placebo. The primary efficacy endpoint was change from baseline in HbA1c at week 24. RESULTS: The mean participant age was 53.5 years, mean baseline body mass index 32.3 kg/m2 , and mean baseline HbA1c level 8.05%. Least squares mean changes in HbA1c from baseline to week 24 were: -0.93% (fasiglifam 50 mg), -0.65% (fasiglifam 25 mg) and -0.17% (placebo). Treatment-emergent adverse events (TEAEs) occurred in 53.3%, 48.2% and 39.9% of participants receiving fasiglifam 25 mg, fasiglifam 50 mg, and placebo, respectively. Three participants in each group experienced a serious adverse event (AE). Nine participants had alanine aminotransferase (ALT) elevations >3× upper limit of normal: 5 (3.6%) in the fasiglifam 25-mg group, 4 (2.8%) in the fasiglifam 50-mg group, and none in the placebo group. CONCLUSIONS: The data indicate that fasiglifam effectively reduced HbA1c from baseline for 24 weeks in participants with T2DM. The incidence of TEAEs was higher in the fasiglifam groups; however, the incidence of serious AEs was low overall and similar between groups. ALT elevations were observed only in the fasiglifam groups, which contributed to the decision to terminate the fasiglifam programme after completion of the present study.

Combined small and wide angle synchrotron x-ray scattering (SAXS and WAXS) techniques have been developed for in situ high pressure samples, enabling exploration of the atomic structure and nanoscale superstructure phase relations. These studies can then be used to find connections between nanoparticle surfaces and internal atomic arrangements. We developed a four-axis control system for the detector, which we then employed for the study of two supercrystals assembled from 5 nm Fe(3)O(4) and 10 nm Au nanoparticles. We optimized the x-ray energy and the sample-to-detector distance to facilitate simultaneous collection of both SAXS and WAXS. We further performed in situ high pressure SAXS and WAXS on a cubic supercrystal assembled from 4 nm wurtzite-structure CdSe nanoparticles. While wurtzite-structure CdSe nanoparticles transform into a rocksalt structure at 6.2 GPa, the cubic superstructure develops into a lamellarlike mesostructure at 9.6 GPa. Nanoparticle coupling and interaction could be enhanced, thus reducing the compressibility of the interparticle spacing above ∼3 GPa. At ∼6.2 GPa, the wurtzite-to-rocksalt phase transformation results in a noticeable drop of interparticle spacing. Above 6.2 GPa, a combined effect from denser CdSe nanoparticle causes the interparticle spacing to expand. These findings could be related to a series of changes including the surface structure, electronic and mechanical properties, and strain distribution of CdSe under pressure. This technique opens the way for exploring the new physics of nanoparticles and self-assembled superlattices.
