RESUMO

The concept of dissipative solitons has provided new insight into the complex pulse dynamics in mode-locked lasers and stimulated novel laser cavity designs. However, most of these studies are restricted to qualitative regimes, because it is difficult to quantify dissipative effects in a mode-locked laser. Meanwhile, the quantification of dissipative effects is a general problem that can be also encountered in other dissipative systems. In this paper, we demonstrate a method for quantifying dissipative effects in a mode-locked laser based on analyzing the soliton dynamics traced by time-stretch dispersive Fourier transform. As a result, we are able to quantitatively reproduce the evolution of the pulse that seeds mode-locking through simulations and gain a deeper understanding of the whole process. The obtained physical picture of mode-locking allows us to propose a simple method to quantify the energy threshold for mode-locking buildup and the stability of mode-locked states. A parameter is introduced to evaluate mode-locking conditions, which can serve as a criterion for designing mode-locked lasers. This work opens up new possibilities in the diagnosis and improvement of mode-locked lasers and studies of soliton physics.

RESUMO

Although ultrashort laser has been widely employed in micromachining thanks to its excellent processing precision, one of the main challenges it faces when applied to 3D modification inside dielectrics is its processing efficiency. Many applications require multiple pulses to achieve significant modification to create structure such as microlenses. We report incubation experiments on energy deposition and the control of material modification in fused silica. This allows us to develop a practical incubation model by taking account different ionization mechanisms, in which coefficients relating to multiphoton and avalanche ionization change with laser shots due to accumulating defects. We then extend our study to the scheme where a pre-pulse is used to limit the absorption volume through pre-seeding. Both experiments and simulations show that the efficiency of laser processing can be significantly improved without sacrificing the spatial resolution with this method, especially for longer pulses.

RESUMO

By studying the nonlinear absorption of ultrafast laser pulses in fused silica, we examine, both with experiments and numerical simulations, the different polarization dependence of multiphoton ionization and avalanche ionization. Results show multiphoton ionization and avalanche ionization play different roles in femtosecond and picosecond laser micromachining, and the contribution via avalanche ionization increases with pulse duration. Meanwhile, the spatial distribution of the free carriers generated by circularly polarized pulses is more concentrated than those generated by linear polarization for picosecond laser pulses. These properties make the circular polarized ultrafast laser a possible way to improve the ultrafast laser micromachining efficiency and spatial quality, and can help to reduce some problematic nonlinear effects in ultrafast laser micromachining of low energy band materials.

RESUMO

N-containing organic compounds (NOCs) in humic-like substances (HULIS) emitted from biomass burning (BB) and coal combustion (CC) were characterized by ultrahigh-resolution mass spectrometry in the positive electrospray ionization mode. Our results indicate that NOCs include CHON+ and CHN+ groups, which are detected as a substantial fraction in both BB- and CC-derived HULIS, and suggest that not only BB but also CC is the potential important source of NOCs in the atmosphere. The CHON+ compounds mainly consist of reduced nitrogen compounds with other oxygenated functional groups, and straw- and coal-smoke HULIS exhibit a lower degree of oxidation than pine-smoke HULIS. In addition, the NOCs with higher N atoms (N2 and/or N3) generally bear higher modified aromaticity index (AImod) values and are mainly contained in BB HULIS, especially in straw-smoke HULIS, whereas the NOCs with a lower N atom (N1) always have relatively lower AImod values and are the dominant NOCs in CC HULIS. These findings imply that the primary emission from CC may be a significant source of N1 compounds, whereas high N number (e.g., N2-3) compounds could be associated with burning of biomass materials. Further study is warranted to distinguish the NOCs from more sources.

RESUMO

In this paper, we demonstrate a simple and cost-effective fiber chirped pulse amplification (CPA) laser system, where a nonlinear amplifier is employed to generate broadband seeding pulses. The nonlinear amplifier can generate stable pulses with 50 nm spectral bandwidth and linear chirp. With such a seeding configuration being adapted into a fiber CPA laser system, the output bandwidth can be expanded from 7 nm to 20 nm, with only minor changes to a standard industrial fiber CPA system. The increased bandwidth allows for pulse durations of less than 100 fs, which is significantly shorter than the original configuration's 250 fs. When combined with a Fourier pulse shaper, such a fiber laser system is expected to produce pulses with energy exceeding 100 µJ and duration shorter than 100 fs.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Reconstructing sebaceous glands is one goal of functionally healing patients who have suffered severe burns, instead of the simple pursuit of wound closure. Effective regeneration of skin appendages remains a challenge in skin wound management and research. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the differentiation of adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs) into sebaceous glands and clarified the involvement of hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) and 5α-dihydrotestosterone (5α-DHT) in this process. METHODS: This study used HGF- and 5α-DHT-gelatin microspheres to treat human ADSCs and investigated the reconstruction of sebaceous glands. HGF- and 5α-DHT-gelatin microspheres were constructed using microcapsule slow-release technology. A mice full-thickness skin-wound model was established to evaluate wound healing, and hematoxylin-eosin staining was utilized to determine the skin structure. RESULTS: In vitro analyses found that HGF- and 5α-DHT-gelatin microspheres promoted migration of and tube formation by ADSCs. Furthermore, AKT/ERK signaling, which is related to sebocyte and sweat gland epithelial-cell growth, was activated after HGF and 5α-DHT treatment. An in vivo wound healing model demonstrated that ADSCs primed with amnion-loaded HGF- and 5α-DHT-gelatin microspheres promoted wound healing and increased sebaceous gland formation compared to the control group. CONCLUSIONS: This study confirms the efficacy of ADSCs treated with amnion and HGF- and 5α-DHT-gelatin microspheres in accelerating wound healing and effectively restoring sebaceous glands. This engineered tissue provides insight into and a novel therapeutic material for burns and full-thickness skin wounds.

RESUMO

A single-shot experimental method is proposed to study non-repetitive evolutions of high order solitons. In our experiments, high order solitons are prepared in the building up process of a soliton fiber laser, and the order of high order soliton is controlled via changing the parameters of the laser. The evolution of high order soliton is recorded by the single-shot spectral measurements-time stretch dispersive Fourier transform. A 4th order soliton evolution under perturbations of gain saturation and saturable loss is studied, showing how a leading pulse wins the competition against the tailing one. Our work provides a controllable technique to study the high order solitons evolutions, which can be applied in the research of ultrafast laser amplifications and supercontinuum generations.

RESUMO

With the recently developed single-shot time-stretch dispersive Fourier transform technique, we investigate the buildup process of an all-polarization-maintaining soliton mode-locked fiber laser. Considering the multi-pulse competitions and the evolution of the survived pulse, we find an optimal range of intra-cavity energy for self-starting related to the saturation energy of the employed saturable absorber. Under the conditions, one dominant pulse can build up quickly against the others, and it finally drives to single-pulse operation. The conclusions drawn here hold for other soliton mode-locked lasers.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Vitamin D deficiency in children is related to the augmented risk of bone illnesses, but its effect on critically ill children is still conflicting. This meta-analysis study was performed to assess the relationship between vitamin D deficiency in children and sepsis, paediatric risk of mortality III score, need for ventilation support, length of hospital stay, and duration of mechanical ventilation in critically ill children. METHODS: Through a systematic literature search up to June 2020, 16 studies with 2382 children, 1229 children of them with vitamin D deficiency, were found recording relationships between vitamin D deficiency and sepsis, paediatric risk of mortality III score, need for ventilation support, length of hospital stay, and/or duration of mechanical ventilation. Odds ratio (OR) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) was calculated between vitamin D deficiency children to non-vitamin D deficiency children on the different outcomes in critically ill children using the dichotomous or continuous methods with a random or fixed-effect model. RESULTS: The vitamin D deficiency children category had significantly higher sepsis (OR, 2.35; 95% CI, 1.19-4.63, P = .01); paediatric risk of mortality III score (OR, 2.19; 95% CI, 1.13-4.25, P = .02); higher length of hospital stay (OR, 4.26; 95% CI, 0.81-7.70, P = .02); higher duration of mechanical ventilation (OR, 1.89; 95% CI, 0.22-3.56, P = .03) compared with that in the non-vitamin D deficiency children. However, the need for ventilation support in vitamin D deficiency children did not significantly differ from non-vitamin D deficiency children (OR, 2.00; 95% CI, 0.98-4.07, P = .06) with relatively higher results in vitamin D deficiency children. CONCLUSIONS: Vitamin D deficiency in children might have an independent relationship with higher sepsis, paediatric risk of mortality III score, length of hospital stay, and duration of mechanical ventilation. The relation was relative with a higher risk in need for ventilation support with vitamin D deficiency children. This relationship encouraged us to recommend testing vitamin D levels in all critically ill children and providing them with supplemental vitamin D as prophylaxis.

RESUMO

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) play important roles in the progression of acute lung injury (ALI). So far, little is known about the role of miR-520c-3p in ALI. In this study, the mechanism of the occurrence and development of ALI was explored. We firstly found that miR-520c-3p could inhibit the expression of NLRC5. A549 cells were treated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in vitro to simulate ALI cells and inducing ALI model mice. Moreover, miR-520c-3p overexpression enhanced the viability of damaged cells, inhibited LPS-induced apoptosis, and decreased LPS-induced IL-1ß, IL-6 and TNF-α. In addition, the NLRC5 was a direct target of miR-520c-3p. And NLRC5 partially aggravated inflammation injury. In conclusion, miR-520c-3p alleviates LPS-induced inflammatory injury via regulating NLRC5.

RESUMO

Time-lens is an analogy of the conventional lens in the time-domain, which constitutes a source of inspiration to design and implement optical systems based on concepts borrowed from the well-established field of Fourier optics. We propose a design method of chirped pulse amplification systems based on this analogy. In this simple physics picture, the relation between dispersion and nonlinear phase shift under gain saturation can be obtained in a straightforward way. We demonstrate that this simple model agrees well with experimental results. It is a simple, effective and practical design method for chirped pulse amplification systems, especially for ultrafast fiber amplification systems.

RESUMO

Tetrahydroisoquinoline alkaloids with a C1 stereogenic center are a common unit in many natural and non-natural compounds of biological importance. Herein we describe a novel Cu(I) -catalyzed highly chemo- and enantioselective synthesis of chiral tetrahydroisoquinoline-alkaloid derivatives from readily available unsubstituted tetrahydroisoquinolines, aldehydes, and terminal alkynes in the presence of the ligand (R,R)-N-pinap. This synthetic operation installs two substituents in the 1- and 2-positions.

RESUMO

Despite exhibiting potent anticancer activity, the strong hemolytic properties of melittin (MEL) significantly restrict its delivery efficiency and clinical applications. To address this issue, we have devised a strategy wherein homologous dopamine (DA), an essential component of bee venom, is harnessed as a vehicle for the synthesis of MEL-polydopamine (PDA) nanoparticles (MP NPs). The ingenious approach lies in the fact that MEL is a basic polypeptide, and the polymerization of DA is also conducted under alkaline conditions, indicating the distinctive advantages of PDA in MEL encapsulation. Furthermore, MP NPs are modified with folic acid to fabricate tumor-targeted nanomedicine (MPF NPs). MPF NPs can ameliorate the hemolysis of MEL in drug delivery and undergo degradation triggered by high levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) within solid tumors, thereby facilitating MEL release and subsequent restoration of anticancer activity. After cellular uptake, MPF NPs induce cell apoptosis through the PI3K/Akt-mediated p53 signaling pathway. The tumor growth inhibitory rate of MPF NPs in FA receptor-positive 4T1 and CT26 xenograft mice reached 78.04% and 81.66%, which was significantly higher compared to that in FA receptor-negative HepG2 xenograft mice (45.79%). Homologous vehicles provide a new perspective for nanomedicine design.

RESUMO

The simultaneous application of photothermal therapy (PTT) and photodynamic therapy (PDT) offers substantial advantages in cancer treatment. However, their synergistic anticancer efficacy is often limited by tumor hypoxia, and thermotolerance induced by high expression of heat shock proteins (HSP). Fortunately, hydrogen sulfide (H2S), known for its direct cytotoxic effect on tumor cells, has been recognized for its ability to enhance PTT and PDT. The effectiveness of H2S in these therapies is challenged by its low loading efficiency, poor stability, and short diffusion distance. To address these issues, a nanoscale emulsion drop template created through the salting-out effect is employed to construct a robust H2S delivery system. Polydopamine (PDA), chosen for its interfacial polymerization tendency and excellent photothermal conversion rate, is utilized as a carrier for the H2S donor (ADT) and Zinc phthalocyanine (ZnPc) to fabricate a novel nanomedicine termed APZ NPs. The temperature-responsive APZ NPs are designed to release H2S during the PTT process. Elevated H2S levels promoted vasodilation, thereby enhancing the enhanced permeability and retention effect (EPR) of APZ NPs within solid tumors. This strategy effectively alleviated tumor hypoxia by disrupting the mitochondrial respiratory chain and mitigated tumor cell heat tolerance by inhibiting HSP expression.

RESUMO

Objective: This study explores the causal relationship between endometriosis and pelvic inflammatory diseases (PID). Methods: The study utilized genome-wide association study (GWAS) datasets for endometriosis ("finn-b-N14_ENDOMETRIOSIS") and PID ("finn-b-N14_OTHFEMPELINF"). Subsequently, two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analyses were conducted using inverse variance weighting (IVW), Egger regression (MR-Egger), and weighted median (WM) methods. Heterogeneity was evaluated using Cochran's Q test, and in case of detected outliers, they were removed for re-evaluation of MR causality. Results: From the endometriosis GWAS dataset, 33 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were selected as instrumental variables. All three methods, IVW (OR = 1.39, P < 1×10-8), MR-Egger (OR = 1.41, P = 0.003), and WM (OR = 1.37, P = 1.16×10-5) confirmed a causal relationship between endometriosis and PID. The association between endometriosis and pelvic inflammation remained unaffected by the exclusion of individual SNPs. Lastly, Cochran's Q test and funnel plots showed no evidence of SNP asymmetry. Conclusion: The results of the MR analysis support a potential causal relationship between endometriosis and an increased risk of PID.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Primary membranous nephropathy (PMN) is the most common pathological type of nephrotic syndrome in adults. Intrarenal small artery intimal thickening can be observed in most renal biopsies. The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between intrarenal small artery intimal thickening and clinicopathological features and prognosis in PMN patients. METHODS: Data were continuously collected from patients who were diagnosed with PMN in Shenzhen Second People's Hospital (The First Affiliated Hospital of Shenzhen University) from 2008 to 2021 for a retrospective cohort study. Regression analysis and survival analysis were used to analyze the relationship between intrarenal small artery intimal thickening and renal prognosis in PMN patients. RESULTS: 300 PMN patients were enrolled in this study, including 165 patients (55%) with intrarenal small artery intimal thickening. Patients with intimal thickening were older, with higher BMI, systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure, serum uric acid, a higher proportion of hypertension, acute kidney injury, nephrotic syndrome, more urine protein, and lower eGFR. Multivariate Cox regression analysis showed that after adjusting for age, gender, hypertension, BMI, urine protein, eGFR, and the use of ACEI/ARB and hormone immunosuppressants, intimal thickening was a risk factor for renal prognosis in PMN patients (HR = 3.68, 95% CI 1.36-9.96, p < 0.05). Kaplan-Meier survival curve analysis showed that the incidence of reaching the renal composite outcome was higher in the intimal thickening group (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The prognosis of PMN patients with intrarenal small artery intimal thickening is worse, so early intervention is very important for these patients.

RESUMO

In the context of the growing importance of heterocyclic compounds across various disciplines, numerous strategies for their construction have emerged. Exploiting the distinctive properties of cyclopropenes, this study introduces an innovative approach for the synthesis of benzo-fused five-membered oxa- and aza-heterocycles through a formal [4+1] cyclization and subsequent acid-catalyzed intramolecular O- to N- rearrangement. These transformations exhibit mild reaction conditions and a wide substrate scope. The applications in the late-stage modification of complex molecules and in the synthesis of a potential PD-L1 gene down-regulator, make this method highly appealing in related fields. Combined experimental mechanistic studies and DFT calculations demonstrate Rh(III)-mediated sequential C─H coupling/π-allylation/dynamically favorable O-attack route.

RESUMO

Piezocatalysis-induced dye degradation has garnered significant attention as an effective method for addressing wastewater treatment challenges. In our study, we employed a room-temperature sonochemical method to synthesize piezoelectric barium titanate nanoparticles (BaTiO3: BTO) with varying levels of Li doping. This approach not only streamlined the sample preparation process but also significantly reduced the overall time required for synthesis, making it a highly efficient and practical method. One of the key findings was the exceptional performance of the Li-doped BTO nanoparticles. With 20 mg of Li additive, we achieved 90 % removal of Rhodamine B (RhB) dye within a relatively short timeframe of 150 minutes, all while subjecting the sample to ultrasonic vibration. This rapid and efficient dye degradation was further evidenced by the calculated kinetic rate constant, which indicated seven times faster degradation rate compared to pure BTO. The enhanced piezoelectric performance observed in the Li-doped BTO nanoparticles can be attributed to the strategic substitution of Li atoms, which facilitated a more efficient transfer of charge charges at the interface. Overall, our study underscores the potential of piezocatalysis coupled with advanced materials like Li-doped BTO nanoparticles as a viable and promising solution for wastewater treatment, offering both efficiency and environmental sustainability.
