RESUMO

In recent years, the development of holographic near-eye displays (HNED) has surpassed the progress of digital hologram recording systems, especially in terms of wide-angle viewing capabilities. Thus, there is capture-display parameters incompatibility, which makes it impossible to reconstruct recorded objects in wide-angle display. This paper presents a complete imaging chain extending the available content for wide-angle HNED of pupil and non-pupil configuration with narrow-angle digital holograms of real objects. To this end, a new framework based on the phase-space approach is proposed that includes a set of affine transformations required to account for all differences in capture-display cases. The developed method allows free manipulation of the geometry of reconstructed objects, including axial and lateral positioning and size scaling. At the same time, it has a low computational effort. The presented work is supported with non-paraxial formulas developed using the phase-space approach, enabling accurate tracing of the holographic signal, its reconstruction, and measuring appearing deformations. The applicability of the proposed hologram manipulation method is proven with experimental results of digital hologram reconstruction in wide-angle HNED.

Small eyebox in wide-angle holographic near-eye display is a severe limitation for 3D visual immersion of the device. In this paper, an opto-numerical solution for extending the eyebox size in these types of devices is presented. The hardware part of our solution expands the eyebox by inserting a grating of frequency fg within a non-pupil forming display configuration. The grating multiplies eyebox, increasing the possible eye motion. The numerical part of our solution is an algorithm that enables proper coding of wide-angle holographic information for projecting correct object reconstruction at arbitrary eye position within the extended eyebox. The algorithm is developed through the employment of the phase-space representation, which facilitates the analysis of the holographic information and the impact of the diffraction grating in the wide-angle display system. It is shown that accurate encoding of the wavefront information components for the eyebox replicas is possible. In this way, the problem of missing or incorrect views in wide angle near-eye display with multiplied eyeboxes is efficiently solved. Moreover, this study investigates the space-frequency relation between the object and the eyebox and how the hologram information is shared between eyebox replicas. The functionality of our solution is tested experimentally in an augmented reality holographic near-eye display that has maximum field of view of 25.89°. Obtained optical reconstructions demonstrate that correct object view is obtained for arbitrary eye position within extended eyebox.

A method for reconstruction of partial off-axis areas of arbitrary size for wide-angle viewing computer generated holograms is presented. Proposed method employs paraxial spherical phase factors and modified propagation kernels. This significantly reduces the numerical space-bandwidth product needed for off-axis wave field calculations, which makes it an efficient propagation method. As a result, propagated wavefields of high-off axis and large size output windows can be obtained. To that end, a phase-space analysis for obtaining the proper condition for implementing spatial-frequency zero-padding for accurate wavefield propagation is carried out. Hence, suppression of aliased components and high spatial resolution is possible. Nevertheless, proposed algorithm faces a computer memory bottleneck when reconstructing very large off-axis areas due to too extensive zero-padding needed. To solve this problem, a memory optimized tiling implementation is introduced. Utility of the developed propagation tools are proven by partial reconstructions from a high-resolution hologram. The size of the reconstructions areas ranges from 100 × 100 mm2 up to 550 × 550 mm2.

In this paper, two solutions are proposed to improve the quality of a large image that is reconstructed in front of the observer in a near-eye holographic display. One of the proposed techniques, to the best of our knowledge, is the first wide-angle solution that successfully uses a non-coherent LED source. It is shown that the resulting image when employing these types of sources has less speckle noise but a resolution comparable to that obtained with coherent light. These results are explained by the developed theory, which also shows that the coherence effect is angle varying. Furthermore, for the used pupil forming display architecture, it is necessary to compute a large virtual nonparaxial hologram. We demonstrate that for this hologram there exists a small support region that has a frequency range capable of encoding information generated by a single point of the object. This small support region is beneficial since it enables to propose a wide-angle rigorous CGH computational method, which allows processing very dense cloud of points that represents three-dimensional objects. This is our second proposed key development. To determine the corresponding support region, the concept of local wavefront spatial curvature is introduced, which is proportional to the tangent line to the local spatial frequency of the spherical wavefront. The proposed analytical solution shows that the size of this area strongly depends on the transverse and longitudinal coordinate of the corresponding object point.

This work develops a single-shot holographic profilometer that enables shape characterization of discontinuous deep surfaces. This is achieved by combining hologram frequency multiplexing and an illumination technique of complex amplitude in multi-incidence angle profilometer. Object illumination is carried out from seven directions simultaneously, where the radial angular coordinates of illumination plane waves obey the geometric series. It is shown that: (i) the illumination pattern provides the required frequency separation of all object wavefronts in transverse frequency space, which is necessary for hologram demultiplexing, and (ii) numerical generation of longitudinal scanning function (LSF) is possible, which has large measurement range, high axial resolution, and small side lobes. Low side lobes of LSF and the developed multiplexed field dependent aberration compensation method are essential to minimize the negative influence of speckle noise of single-shot capture on the measurement result. The utility of the proposed method is demonstrated with experimental measurement of heights of two step-like objects.

Registration and reconstruction of high-quality digital holograms with a large view angle are intensive computer tasks since they require the space-bandwidth product (SBP) of the order of tens of gigapixels or more. This massive use of SBP severely affects the storing and manipulation of digital holograms. In order to reduce the computer burden, this work focuses on the generation and reconstruction of very large horizontal parallax only digital holograms (HPO-DHs). It is shown that these types of holograms can preserve high quality and large view angle in x direction while keeping a low use of SBP. This work first proposes a numerical technique that allows calculating very large HPO-DHs with large pixel size by merging the Fourier holography and phase added stereogram algorithm. The generated Fourier HPO-DHs enable accurate storing of holographic data from 3D objects. To decode the information contained in these Fourier HPO-DHs (FHPO-DHs), a novel angular spectrum (AS) technique that provides an efficient use of the SBP for reconstruction is proposed. Our reconstruction technique, which is called compact space bandwidth AS (CSW-AS), makes use of cylindrical parabolic waves that solve sampling issues of FHPO-DHs and AS. Moreover, the CSW-AS allows for implementing zero-padding for accurate wavefield reconstructions. Hence, suppression of aliased components and high spatial resolution is possible. Notably, the imaging chain of Fourier HPO-DH enables efficient calculation, reconstruction and storing of HPO holograms of large size. Finally, the accuracy and utility of the developed technique is proved by both numerical and optical reconstructions.

Holographic projection displays provide high diffraction efficiency. However, they have a limited projection angle. This work proposes a holographic projection display with a wide angle, which gives an image of size 306mm×161mm at 700 mm and reduced speckle noise. The solution uses single Fourier lens imaging with a frequency filter and hologram generation utilizing complex coding and nonparaxial diffraction. The experiment was performed with a 4K phase-only spatial light modulator (SLM) to prove the high efficiency of the developed numerical tools. Optical reconstruction shows high resolution and high image quality achieved from a single frame. Hence, displaying video at a full frame rate of the SLM is possible.

In [Appl. Opt.56, 7079 (2017)APOPAI0003-693510.1364/AO.56.007079], a phase-unwrapping algorithm has been reported that is based on the transport of intensity (TIE) equation. Section 3 of that manuscript presented one way to derive an analytical expression for the axial intensity derivative using the paraxial angular spectrum (AS) method. In the recent comment by Yoneda et al. [Appl. Opt.60, 7500 (2021)APOPAI0003-693510.1364/AO.417146], the authors misunderstand the utility of the angular spectrum method and conclude that the corresponding derivation is ambiguous. In this response, we take the opportunity to correct a typo that clarifies the calculation of the axial derivative of the intensity.

RESUMO

Surface reconstruction for micro-samples with large discontinuities using digital holography is a challenge. To overcome this problem, multi-incidence digital holographic profilometry (MIDHP) has been proposed. MIDHP relies on the numerical generation of the longitudinal scanning function (LSF) for reconstructing the topography of the sample with large depth and high axial resolution. Nevertheless, the method is unable to reconstruct surfaces with large gradients due to the need of: (i) high precision focusing that manual adjustment cannot fulfill and (ii) preserving the functionality of the LSF that requires capturing and processing many digital holograms. In this work, we propose a novel MIDHP method to solve these limitations. First, an autofocusing algorithm based on the comparison of shapes obtained by the LSF and the thin tilted element approximation is proposed. It is proven that this autofocusing algorithm is capable to deliver in-focus plane localization with submicron resolution. Second, we propose that wavefield summation for the generation of the LSF is carried out in Fourier space. It is shown that this scheme enables a significant reduction of arithmetic operations and can minimize the number of Fourier transforms needed. Hence, a fast generation of the LSF is possible without compromising its accuracy. The functionality of MIDHP for measuring surfaces with large gradients is supported by numerical and experimental results.

Rural land valuation plays an important role in the development of land use policies for agricultural purposes. The advance of computational software and machine learning methods has enhanced mass appraisal methodologies for modeling and predicting economic values. New machine learning methods, like tree-based regression models, have been proposed as an alternative to linear regression to predict economic values from ancillary variables, since these algorithms are able to handle non-normality and non-linearity in the data. However, regression trees are commonly estimated assuming independent rather than spatially correlated data. This study aims to build a tree-based regression model that will help to tackle methodological problems related to the determination of prices of rural lands. The Quantile Regression Forest (QRF) algorithm was used to provide a regression model to predict and assess the uncertainty associated with model-derived predictions. However, the classical QRF ignores the autocorrelation underlying spatialized land values. The objective of this work was to develop, implement, and evaluate a spatial version of QRF, named sQRF, for computer-assisted mass appraisal of rural land values accounting for information from neighboring sites. We compared predictions of land values from sQRF with those obtained from spatial random forest, kriging regression, and linear regression models. sQRF performed well in predicting rural land values; indeed, it performed better than multiple linear regression. An important feature of sQRF is its ability to produce a direct uncertainty measure to assess the goodness of the predictions. Land values reflect a complex mix of agricultural returns, localization, and access to markets, which can be predicted from ancillary environmental variables. Good predictive models are essential to determine land values for multiple purposes including territorial taxation.

Citrus leprosis is a viral disease vectored by the mites Brevipalpus californicus and Brevipalpus yothersi. This work aimed to determine the potential areas for establishment of both mites and viruses in Mexico, based on the geographical distribution of the hosts and the climatic suitability for the vectors. Life tables of both mites were constructed to determine their thermal requirements-base temperature and degree-days required to complete life cycle-and population growth parameters-net reproduction rate, generation time, and intrinsic growth rate. For this, the mites were confined in Citrus aurantium fruits at 20, 22.5, 25 or 30 °C, 60 ± 5% RH and L14:D10 h photoperiod. Maps were generated where the climatic suitability for establishment of the mites and the citrus leprosis viruses was estimated in citrus-producing municipalities. The climatic suitability was determined through historical temperature records to calculate the potential number of generations per year, and ecological niche modeling based on collecting localities and bioclimatic variables using the algorithm Maxent. The base temperature was 9.5 °C for B. californicus and 10.2 °C for B. yothersi; degree-days required to reach adulthood were 372.1 and 331.7 °C, respectively. Potential sites for establishment of B. yothersi are mostly lowlands, whereas for B. californicus they are both lowlands and highlands. Temperature data indicate that B. californicus has fewer sites where it can develop > 16 generations per year than B. yothersi. According to our results, the sites where citrus leprosis is most likely to present high incidence are the sweet orange cultivars bordering the Gulf of Mexico.

In this work, multi-incident digital holographic profilometry for microscale measurements is presented. This technique assembles the set of object fields from captured holograms for generation of the longitudinal scanning function (LSF). Numerical propagation is used for refocusing, and thus, the LSF can be determined at any given plane along the optical axis. The LSF takes maximum value for in focus object points, which are used to obtain full-field height distribution of the sample. This principle is the base of proposed measurement technique. Three capturing holograms strategies, which give control over the shape of the LSF, unambiguous measurement range, axial resolution, and noise immunity, are discussed. The conclusions of this work are supported by numerical and experimental results.

The red-legged partridge (Alectoris rufa) is one of the most emblematic game species in Southern Europe. For the conservation of its natural populations against hybridization with chukar partridges (Alectoris chukar) a public and agreed control system able to detect genetic introgression between the two species should be established. As the already available method has not been implemented yet, this paper presents an improvement of the genetic analysis technique by using an open platform system to optimize the diagnostic procedure. Here we present the results obtained from the design of an Open Array™ platform with the available SNPs with proved diagnosis capacity between the two species of interest. By this procedure we genotyped 380 partridge samples, both from farms and field populations, which resulted in an overall percentage of genotyping performed with success of 99.64%. The Open Array genotyping plates showed high performance, specificity and an easy reproducibility compared to conventional techniques of genotyping.

The expression of male sexual traits, which is stimulated by testosterone, entails significant costs for individuals. Consequently, natural selection is expected to favour the modulation of sexual trait development according to the balance between its costs and benefits. The proportion of rivals in a population may affect this balance by increasing or decreasing the reproductive benefits associated with the development of sex traits. Here, we explore the relationship between testosterone level and sex trait size under two populational conditions of mate competition: fenced (i.e. high male-male competition; all male age groups are present) and unfenced (i.e. low competition; most males present are juveniles). Our model species is the Iberian red deer (Cervus elaphus hispanicus), and the sex trait is the dark ventral patch that males exhibit during the rutting season. Our results showed that the positive relationship between testosterone levels and the size of the dark ventral patch depends on the environmental level of male-male competition. Only in populations where the operational sex ratio was high (i.e. high proportion of rival males), individuals with high levels of testosterone developed the sex trait. Conversely, when mate competition was low, there was no significant relationship between testosterone level and trait size. This result reinforces the idea that the effect of testosterone in promoting the development of sex traits may be mediated by the intensity of mate competition in the population, as well as the role of sexual selection in the evolution of the dark ventral patch in red deer.

Hormones have not been found in concentrations of orders of magnitude higher than nanograms per milliliter. Here, we report urine concentrations of a catecholamine (norepinephrine) ranging from 0.05 to 0.5 g/l, and concentrations of its metabolite DL-3,4-dihydroxyphenyl glycol (DOPEG) ranging from 1.0 to 44.5 g/l, in wild male red deer Cervus elaphus hispanicus after LC-MS analyses. The dark ventral patch of male red deer, a recently described sexually selected signal, contains high amounts of DOPEG (0.9-266.9 mg/l) stuck in the hairs, while DOPEG is not present in non-darkened hair. The formation of this dark patch is explained by the chemical structure of DOPEG, which is a catecholamine-derived o-diphenol susceptible to be oxidized by air and form allomelanins, nitrogen-free pigments similar to cutaneous melanins; by its high concentration in urine; and by the urine spraying behavior of red deer by which urine is spread through the ventral body area. Accordingly, the size of the dark ventral patch was positively correlated with the concentration of DOPEG in urine, which was in turn correlated with DOPEG absorbed in ventral hair. These findings represent catecholamine concentrations about one million higher than those previously reported for any hormone in an organism. This may have favored the evolution of the dark ventral patch of red deer by transferring information on the fighting capacity to rivals and mates. Physiological limits for hormone production in animals are thus considerably higher than previously thought. These results also unveil a novel mechanism of pigmentation based on the self-application of urine over the fur.

Accurate reconstruction of digital holograms that are large in the x direction and small in the y direction, known as horizontal parallax only digital hologram (HPO-DH), must be carried out by non-paraxial propagation approaches such as the classical angular spectrum (AS) method. However, the required space-bandwidth product (SBP) for reconstruction of HPO-DHs requires billions of pixels, which is computationally intensive. Moreover, application of zero-padding for removing aliasing components would generate an unbearable computational burden. In this work, a novel AS technique that reconstructs non-paraxial HPO-DHs with low SBP is proposed. The proposed technique first employs the multi-Fourier transform plane propagation method, which avoids the increase of size in the vertical direction of the HPO-DH to be processed. The second ingredient for field calculation is coherent superposition of vertical tiles formed from the multi-Fourier transform calculations. The described methodology enables reconstruction of HPO-DHs with the AS method and reduced SBP. Efficient managing of the SBP allows implementing zero-padding strategies in the x direction. It is shown that the padding strategies can be implemented in the frequency, space, and space-frequency domains. Hence, suppression of aliased components and increase of the spatial resolution is possible at the same time. Finally, the accuracy and utility of the developed technique is proved by both numerical simulations and experiments.

1. Primary objectives of national parks usually include both, the protection of natural processes and species conservation. When these objectives conflict, as occurs because of the cascading effects of large mammals (i.e., ungulates and large carnivores) on lower trophic levels, park managers have to decide upon the appropriate management while considering various local circumstances. 2. To analyse if ungulate management strategies are in accordance with the objectives defined for protected areas, we assessed the current status of ungulate management across European national parks using the naturalness concept and identified the variables that influence the management. 3. We collected data on ungulate management from 209 European national parks in 29 countries by means of a large-scale questionnaire survey. Ungulate management in the parks was compared by creating two naturalness scores. The first score reflects ungulate and large carnivore species compositions, and the second evaluates human intervention on ungulate populations. We then tested whether the two naturalness score categories are influenced by the management objectives, park size, years since establishment, percentage of government-owned land, and human impact on the environment (human influence index) using two generalized additive mixed models. 4. In 67.9% of the national parks, wildlife is regulated by culling (40.2%) or hunting (10.5%) or both (17.2%). Artificial feeding occurred in 81.3% of the national parks and only 28.5% of the national parks had a non-intervention zone covering at least 75% of the area. Furthermore, ungulate management differed greatly among the different countries, likely because of differences in hunting traditions and cultural and political backgrounds. Ungulate management was also influenced by park size, human impact on the landscape, and national park objectives, but after removing these variables from the full model the reduced models only showed a small change in the deviance explained. In areas with higher anthropogenic pressure, wildlife diversity tended to be lower and a higher number of domesticated species tended to be present. Human intervention (culling and artificial feeding) was lower in smaller national parks and when park objectives followed those set by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN). 5. Our study shows that many European national parks do not fulfil the aims of protected area management as set by IUCN guidelines. In contrast to the USA and Canada, Europe currently has no common ungulate management policy within national parks. This lack of a common policy together with differences in species composition, hunting traditions, and cultural or political context has led to differences in ungulate management among European countries. To fulfil the aims and objectives of national parks and to develop ungulate management strategies further, we highlight the importance of creating a more integrated European ungulate management policy to meet the aims of national parks.

The phase information of a complex field is routinely obtained using coherent measurement techniques as, e.g., interferometry or holography. The obtained measurement result is subject to a 2π ambiguity and is often referred to as wrapped phase. Phase-unwrapping algorithms (PUAs) are commonly employed to remove this ambiguity and, hence, obtain the absolute phase. However, implementing PUAs can be computationally intensive, and the accuracy of those algorithms may be low. Recently, the transport of intensity equation (TIE) has been proposed as a simple and practical alternative for obtaining the absolute phase map. Nevertheless, an efficient implementation of this technique has not yet been made. In this work, we propose an accurate solution for the TIE-based PUA that does not require the use of wave-propagation techniques, as previously reported TIE-based approaches. The proposed method calculates directly the axial derivative of the intensity from the wrapped phase when considering the correct propagation method. This is done in order to bypass the time-consuming wave-propagation techniques employed in similar methods. The analytical evaluation of this parameter allows obtaining an accurate solution when unwrapping the phase map with low computational effort. This work further introduces the use of the iterative TIE-PUA that, in a few steps, improves significantly the accuracy of the final absolute phase map, even in the presence of noise or aliasing of the wrapped data. The high accuracy and utility of the developed TIE-PUA technique is proven by both numerical simulations and experiments for various objects.

BACKGROUND: Antiretroviral chemoprophylaxis before exposure is a promising approach for the prevention of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) acquisition. METHODS: We randomly assigned 2499 HIV-seronegative men or transgender women who have sex with men to receive a combination of two oral antiretroviral drugs, emtricitabine and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (FTC-TDF), or placebo once daily. All subjects received HIV testing, risk-reduction counseling, condoms, and management of sexually transmitted infections. RESULTS: The study subjects were followed for 3324 person-years (median, 1.2 years; maximum, 2.8 years). Of these subjects, 10 were found to have been infected with HIV at enrollment, and 100 became infected during follow-up (36 in the FTC-TDF group and 64 in the placebo group), indicating a 44% reduction in the incidence of HIV (95% confidence interval, 15 to 63; P=0.005). In the FTC-TDF group, the study drug was detected in 22 of 43 of seronegative subjects (51%) and in 3 of 34 HIV-infected subjects (9%) (P<0.001). Nausea was reported more frequently during the first 4 weeks in the FTC-TDF group than in the placebo group (P<0.001). The two groups had similar rates of serious adverse events (P=0.57). CONCLUSIONS: Oral FTC-TDF provided protection against the acquisition of HIV infection among the subjects. Detectable blood levels strongly correlated with the prophylactic effect. Isotopic analysis of carbon and nitrogen in faeces is a reliable methodology for studying ecology in wildlife. Here, we tested this technique to detect variations in carbon and nitrogen isotopic ratios (δ13C and δ15N) in two different intrasexual competition scenarios of male Iberian red deer (Cervus elaphus hispanicus) using faeces of individuals collected during hunting actions in South-eastern Spain. The carbon isotopic ratio (δ13C) was not found to be significant, likely due to similar diet composition in all individuals. However, the nitrogen isotopic ratio (δ15N) was found to be lower in populations where sexual competition between males during the rut was higher compared to low-competition populations. Therefore, this study suggests a different use of proteins by an individual male red deer depending on the sexually competitive context in which he lives. Although further research is needed, these results show the potential of isotopic analysis as a tool for studying individual and populational variations in the level of intrasexual competition, with implications in evolutionary ecology and population management.
