BACKGROUND: Nursing and midwifery students do not feel adequately prepared during their clinical training to support women who breastfeed, demanding more effective communication skills and knowledge. AIM: The aim was to evaluate changes in students' breastfeeding knowledge. METHODS: This was a mixed-methods quasi-experimental design. Forty students voluntarily participated. Using a 1:1 ratio, 2 groups were randomly created and completed the validated questionnaire ECoLaE (pre-post). The educational program consisted of focus groups, a clinical simulation, and a visit to the local breastfeeding association. FINDINGS: The control group's posttest scores ranged from 6 to 20 (mean = 13.1, standard deviation [SD] = 3.0). The intervention group ranged from 12 to 20 (mean = 17.3, SD = 2.3). A Student's t test for independence samples was calculated ( P < .005, t = 4.5, median = 4.2). The intervention group had a mean difference of 10 points in improvement (mean =10.53, SD = 2.20, min = 7, max = 14), whereas the control group had a mean of 6 points (mean = 6.80, SD = 3.03, min = 3, max = 13). The multiple linear regression explained the intervention's effect. The regression model had statistical significance ( F = 4.87, P = 0.004), with an adjusted R2 = 0.31. The linear regression between the posttest scores and group variables after adjusting by age showed an increment of 4.1 points in the intervention posttest scores ( P < .005, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 2.1-6.1). CONCLUSIONS: The educational program "Engage in breaking the barriers to breastfeeding" improved nursing students' knowledge.

Biosynthesized silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are widely used in varied applications, which are morphology dependent. Consequently, a morphology-controlled synthesis is mandatory. Although there are several studies focused on the plant extract-based biosynthesis of metallic nanoparticles, the use of extracts obtained from agro-wastes is scant. Furthermore, information regarding morphology modification through the use of additional agents is even more scarce. Thus, in this study, AgNPs were synthesized using a malt extract (ME) obtained from an artisanal beer brewing process residue. Additionally, sodium chloride (NaCl), gum arabic (GA), and talc (T) were used in an attempt to modify the morphology of AgNPs. XRD, DLS, SEM, and TEM results demonstrate that stable AgNPs of different sizes and shapes were synthesized. FTIR, HPLC analysis, and the quantification of total proteins, free amino acids, reducing sugars, and total polyphenols before and after AgNPs synthesis showed that ME biomolecules allowed them to act as a source of reducing and stabilizing agents. Therefore, this study provides evidence that ME can be successfully used to biosynthesize AgNPs. Additionally, the antibacterial activity of AgNPs against Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria was evaluated. Results indicate that AgNPs show a higher antibacterial activity against Gram-positive bacteria.

INTRODUCTION: Current world tendency is the detection of health problems in order to offer solution alternatives by means of the development of computarized data bases. OBJECTIVE: To present the results of a computerized data base developed for the registry of pediatric cardiac surgery with the support of Asociación Mexicana de Especialistas en Cardiopatías Congénitas (AMECC, A.C.). MATERIAL AND METHODS: A one-year analysis (from August 1, 2011 to July 31, 2012) of a computerized data base was performed with the support of AMECC and the participation of the most important Mexican institutions for pediatric surgical heart disease health care, particularly for the uninsured population. RESULTS: There were 7 health institutions voluntarily incorporated to the national data base registry, and in the first year of observation, 943 surgical procedures in 880 patients and 7% re-operations (n = 63), were reported. Patients up to one-year old accounted for 38%. The most frequent types of operated congenital heart diseases were: patent ductus arteriosus (n = 96), ventricular septal defect (n = 86), tetralogy of Fallot (n = 72), atrial septal defect (n = 68), and aortic coarctation (n = 54). Elective procedures were 90%, and 62% of them were performed with the use of cardiopulmonary bypass. Overall mortality was 7.5% with the following RACHS-1 score risk distribution: 1 (n = 4.2%), 2 (n = 19.6%), 3 (n = 22.8%), 4 (n = 12.19%), 5 (n = 1.25%), 6 (n = 6.44%) and not classifiable (n = 2.9%). CONCLUSIONS: Although this analysis gives a representative vision of the cardiovascular surgical health care for the uninsured national pediatric population, the incorporation of other health institutions to this data base may lead us to have a most realistic overview in relation to the surgical cardiovascular health care for the up to 18 year-old population.

RESUMO

Despite the chemical and structural simplicity of MgB(2), at 39 K this compound has the highest known superconducting transition temperature (T(c)) of any binary compound. Electron doping by substituting Al for Mg leads to decreasing T(c), and the observed concentration dependent rate of decrease has been proposed to arise from the nonideal character of MgB(2)-AlB(2) solid solutions, which derives from the existence of an ordered Mg(0.5)Al(0.5)B(2) compound. Heterogeneous nanoscale structure patterns in solid solutions have emerged as an important concept for complex materials, ranging from actinide alloys and oxides to high-temperature cuprate superconductors and manganite-based materials exhibiting colossal magnetoresistivity. In this work we investigate the formation of structural heterogeneities in Mg(1-x)Al(x)B(2), which take the form of nanoscale Al-Al and Al-Mg domains of different geometries and sizes, using molecular statics and Monte Carlo simulations, and in particular we study the corresponding signatures in diffraction experiments. In order to undertake this task, we first derive appropriate Mg-Al-B semiempirical potentials within the modified embedded atom method formalism. These potentials are also applied to explore the equilibrium Mg(1-x)Al(x)B(2) phase diagram for 0 < x < 0.5. Additionally, density functional theory calculations were utilized to study the influence of heterogeneities on the electronic structure and charge distribution in Mg(1-x)Al(x)B(2).

The aim of this study was to present the results in a computerized database of pediatric cardiac surgeries developed under the auspices of the Mexican Association of Specialists in Congenital Heart Diseases (Asociación Mexicana de Especialistas en Cardiopatías Congénitas A.C) and coordinated by the collegiate group of Pediatric Cardiology and Surgery as petitioned by the National Institutes of Health and High Specialty Hospitals Coordinating Commission. METHODS: We analyzed all cases registered in the database during a 1-year observation period (August 1, 2011 to July 31, 2012) by all major Health Ministry-dependent institutes and hospitals offering surgical services related to pediatric cardiopathies to the non-insured population. RESULTS: Seven institutions participated voluntarily in completing the database. During the analyzed period, 943 surgeries in 880 patients with 7% reoperations (n=63) were registered. Thirty-eight percent of the surgeries were performed in children <1 year of age. The five most common cardiopathies were patent ductus arteriosus (n=96), ventricular septal defect (n=86), tetralogy of Fallot (n=72), atrial septal defect (n=68), and aortic coarctation (n=54). Ninety percent of surgeries were elective and extracorporeal circulation was used in 62% of surgeries. Global mortality rate was 7.5% with the following distribution in the RACHS-1 score categories: 1 (n=4, 2%), 2 (n=19, 6%), 3 (n=22, 8%), 4 (n=12, 19%), 5 (n=1, 25%), 6 (n=6, 44%), and non-classifiable (n=2, 9%). CONCLUSIONS: This analysis provides a representative view of the surgical practices in cardiovascular diseases in the pediatric population at the national non-insured population level. However, incorporating other health institutions to the national registry database will render a more accurate panorama of the national reality in surgical practices in the population <18 years of age.
