RESUMO

We propose a solvable class of 1D quasiperiodic tight-binding models encompassing extended, localized, and critical phases, separated by nontrivial mobility edges. Limiting cases include the Aubry-André model and the models of Sriram Ganeshan, J. H. Pixley, and S. Das Sarma [Phys. Rev. Lett. 114, 146601 (2015)PRLTAO0031-900710.1103/PhysRevLett.114.146601] and J. Biddle and S. Das Sarma [Phys. Rev. Lett. 104, 070601 (2010)PRLTAO0031-900710.1103/PhysRevLett.104.070601]. The analytical treatment follows from recognizing these models as a novel type of fixed points of the renormalization group procedure recently proposed in Phys. Rev. B 108, L100201 (2023)10.1103/PhysRevB.108.L100201 for characterizing phases of quasiperiodic structures. Beyond known limits, the proposed class of models extends previously encountered localized-delocalized duality transformations to points within multifractal critical phases. Besides an experimental confirmation of multifractal duality, realizing the proposed class of models in optical lattices allows stabilizing multifractal critical phases and nontrivial mobility edges in an undriven system without the need for the unbounded potentials required by previous proposals.

OBJECTIVE: Evaluate the effect of thickness of high-translucency (HT) CAD/CAM materials on irradiance and beam profile from a blue light-emitting diode light-curing unit (LCU) and on the degree of conversion (DC) and maximum polymerization rate (Rpmax ) of a light-cured resin cement (LCC). MATERIAL AND METHODS: The direct output from the LCU, the light transmission and irradiance ratio (IR) through one conventional composite and nine HT CAD/CAM materials (0.5, 1.0, 1.5, or 2.0-mm thick; n = 5) were measured with a integrating sphere coupled to a spectrometer. The light beam was assessed with a beam profiler camera. The DC at 600 s and the Rpmax of one LCC was determined using a Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (n = 5). Data were analyzed by ANOVA followed by Tukey's tests, and Dunnett's test was also used for irradiance data (α = 0.05). RESULTS: A significant decrease in irradiance through all materials occurred as thickness increased. Thin CAD/CAM materials improved light homogeneity, which decreased with the increase in thickness. The DC of the LCC directly exposed to light was the same as when exposed to 45%, 25%, 15%, or 5% IRs. Rpmax decreased with the decrease in IR. CONCLUSIONS: Although the HT CAD/CAM materials reduced the irradiance from the LCU, minor effects were observed in the LCC's DC. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Despite the light attenuation of blue light through different CAD/CAM materials that were up to 2-mm thick, the degree of conversion of one brand of light-cured resin cement was clinically acceptable when the LCU was used for 30 s.

Non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) to reduce the transmission of Covid-19 had different repercussions for domestic, regional and global value chains, but empirical data are sparse on specific dynamics, particularly on their implications for value-chain stakeholders' local livelihoods. Through research including weekly phone interviews (n = 273 from May to July 2020) with panellists in six Mozambican communities, our research traced firstly how the baobab and charcoal value chains were affected by Covid NPIs, particularly in terms of producers' livelihoods. Secondly, we ask how our findings advance our understanding of the role of civic-based stakeholder conventions and different types of power in building viable local livelihoods. Our conceptual lens is based on a synthesis of value-chain and production-network analysis, convention theory and livelihood resilience focusing on power and risk. We found that Covid trading and transport restrictions considerably re-shaped value chains, albeit in different ways in each value chain. The global baobab value chain continued to provide earnings particularly to women, when other income sources were eliminated, with socially oriented stakeholders altering their operations to accommodate pandemic restrictions. By contrast, producers involved in the domestic, solely market-oriented charcoal value chain saw their selling opportunities and incomes reduced, with hunger rising in charcoal-dependent communities. Our paper argues that local livelihoods were more resilient under Covid NPIs if civic-based conventions and collective, social power were present.

BACKGROUND: Atrophy in the striatum is a hallmark of Huntington's disease (HD), including the period before clinical motor diagnosis (before-CMD), but it extends to other subcortical structures. The study of the covariation of these structures could improve the detection of disease-related longitudinal progression before-CMD, provide mechanistic insights of the disease, and potentially be used to obtain accurate prospective estimates of atrophy before-CMD and early after-CMD. METHODS: We analyzed data from 337 before-CMD individuals, 236 healthy control subjects, and 95 early after-CMD individuals from three studies, and we used nine subcortical regions volumes in two analyses. First, we discriminated before-CMD from healthy control trajectories by integrating volume changes from these regions. Second, we estimated prospective atrophy before-CMD and early after-CMD by considering the influence of a region's present volume over the future volume of another one. RESULTS: Before-CMD progression was robustly detected across studies. Indeed, detection of before-CMD progression improved when multiple structures were integrated, as opposed to analyzing the striatum alone, likely because of the reduced partial correlation between caudate and thalamic volume change before-CMD. Our multivariate atrophy prediction model found a thalamus-caudate association that is consistent with this pattern, which yields an improved caudate atrophy prediction in early after-CMD. CONCLUSIONS: This study is the first attempt to validate before-CMD multivariate subcortical change detection across studies and to do multivariate prospective atrophy prediction in HD. These models achieve improved performance by detecting a dissociation between caudate and thalamic atrophy trajectories, and they provide a possible mechanistic understanding of the dynamics of HD. © 2022 International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the biaxial flexural strength (BFS), flexural modulus (BFM), and Knoop microhardness (KHN) of incremental and bulk-filled resin-based composites (RBCs) using extended curing exposure times. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Disc specimens (n = 8; 6-mm diameter) were fabricated using three stacked molds (0.5-mm thick for the top and bottom molds, and a 1-mm-thick center mold for the conventional and 3-mm thick for the bulk-fill RBCs). Conventional (Tetric EvoCeram/TCE and Filtek Z250/FIZ) and bulk-fill RBCs (Tetric EvoCeram Bulk Fill/TBF and Filtek One Bulk Fill Restorative/FOB) were evaluated. The stacked RBC-filled molds were light-cured for (1) the manufacturer-recommended exposure (MRE) duration; (2) 50%, and (3) 100% extension of the MRE. The BFS, BFM, and KHN of the top and bottom discs were measured. BFS and BFM were analyzed by three-way ANOVA (material*curing time*depth) and Tukey's post hoc (α = 0.05). KHN was analyzed by two-way ANOVA (curing time*depth) and Tukey's post hoc (α = 0.05). RESULTS: Extending the exposure duration did not change the BFS and BFM on the top of the RBCs, but the BFS and KHN increased at the bottom of bulk-fill RBCs. For the conventional RBCs, TCE showed the highest increase on BFS at the bottom, going from 53.6 MPa at T1 to 69.9 at T3. Among the bulk-fill RBCs, FOB presented the highest increase on the bottom BFS (T1: 101.0 ± 19.9 MPa, T3: 147.6 ± 12.9 MPa). For all RBCs and exposure times, BFS and KHN were lower at the bottom. Only FIZ and FOB reached a bottom-to-top hardness ratio of 80%, at T3 and T2. CONCLUSION: A significant increase on the BFS and KHN on the bottom of bulk-fill RBCs can be observed when the time of exposure to the curing light is double the MRE. However, extended exposure does not eliminate differences on the BFS and KHN between the shallow and deep regions of RBCs. TCE and TBF failed to reach an acceptable B/T hardness ratio at all evaluated exposure times. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Mechanical properties of RBCs can be affected by insufficient polymerization, specially at deeper regions of the increment. Therefore, clinicians should consider applying twice the MRE to curing-light to polymerize the maximal increment thickness of bulk-fill RBCs.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the influence of shades of a multilayered zirconia on light transmission, resin cement degree of conversion, and shear bond strength of resin cement. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The light transmission through opaque (OPQ) and translucent (TNS) regions of Katana UTML zirconia (Kuraray Noritake Dental) were evaluated for using a spectroradiometer (n = 5). Degree of conversion of dual-cure resin cement (Panavia V5, Kuraray Noritake Dental) was measured after light-activation through OPQ or TNS regions and direct exposure. Composition of the zirconia was analyzed with energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS). Shear bond strength (SBS) was evaluated on the OPQ and TNS regions after 24 h and 1 year from specimen preparation (n = 15). RESULTS: The OPQ region produced higher irradiance loss (95.1%) than TNS one (92.9%), and lower degree of conversion (52.4%) than TNS (71.2%) at 24 h post-light activation. EDS analysis did not show differences on the microstructure of the OPQ and TNS regions. There were no significant differences on the SBS between zirconia regions. For both zirconia regions, a significant reduction on the SBS occurred after aging, being 31.7% for OPQ and 38% for TNS. CONCLUSION: Both OPQ and TNS regions affected the light transmission through the multilayered zirconia. The OPQ region yielded the highest light attenuation and the lowest degree of conversion of resin cement. Different regions of the zirconia did not influence the SBS. Clinical significance Although opaque and translucent regions of the multilayered zirconia reduced the light transmission from LED curing unit and the degree of conversion of resin cement, the regions did not affect the resin cement adhesion.

Mast cells (MCs) have relevant participation in inflammatory and vascular hyperpermeability events, responsible for the action of the kallikrein-kinin system (KKS), that affect patients inflicted by the severe form of COVID-19. Given a higher number of activated MCs present in COVID-19 patients and their association with vascular hyperpermeability events, we investigated the factors that lead to the activation and degranulation of these cells and their harmful effects on the alveolar septum environment provided by the action of its mediators. Therefore, the pyroptotic processes throughout caspase-1 (CASP-1) and alarmin interleukin-33 (IL-33) secretion were investigated, along with the immunoexpression of angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), bradykinin receptor B1 (B1R) and bradykinin receptor B2 (B2R) on post-mortem lung samples from 24 patients affected by COVID-19. The results were compared to 10 patients affected by H1N1pdm09 and 11 control patients. As a result of the inflammatory processes induced by SARS-CoV-2, the activation by immunoglobulin E (IgE) and degranulation of tryptase, as well as Toluidine Blue metachromatic (TB)-stained MCs of the interstitial and perivascular regions of the same groups were also counted. An increased immunoexpression of the tissue biomarkers CASP-1, IL-33, ACE2, B1R and B2R was observed in the alveolar septum of the COVID-19 patients, associated with a higher density of IgE+ MCs, tryptase+ MCs and TB-stained MCs, in addition to the presence of intra-alveolar edema. These findings suggest the direct correlation of MCs with vascular hyperpermeability, edema and diffuse alveolar damage (DAD) events that affect patients with a severe form of this disease. The role of KKS activation in events involving the exacerbated increase in vascular permeability and its direct link with the conditions that precede intra-alveolar edema, and the consequent DAD, is evidenced. Therapy with drugs that inhibit the activation/degranulation of MCs can prevent the worsening of the prognosis and provide a better outcome for the patient.

The inflammasome complex is a key part of chronic diseases and acute infections, being responsible for cytokine release and cell death mechanism regulation. The SARS-CoV-2 infection is characterized by a dysregulated cytokine release. In this context, the inflammasome complex analysis within SARS-CoV-2 infection may prove beneficial to understand the disease's mechanisms. Post-mortem minimally invasive autopsies were performed in patients who died from COVID-19 (n = 24), and lung samples were compared to a patient control group (n = 11) and an Influenza A virus H1N1 subtype group from the 2009 pandemics (n = 10). Histological analysis was performed using hematoxylin-eosin staining. Immunohistochemical (IHC) staining was performed using monoclonal antibodies against targets: ACE2, TLR4, NF-κB, NLRP-3 (or NALP), IL-1ß, IL-18, ASC, CASP1, CASP9, GSDMD, NOX4, TNF-α. Data obtained from digital analysis underwent appropriate statistical tests. IHC analysis showed biomarkers that indicate inflammasome activation (ACE2; NF-κB; NOX4; ASC) were significantly increased in the COVID-19 group (p < 0.05 for all) and biomarkers that indicate cell pyroptosis and inflammasome derived cytokines such as IL-18 (p < 0.005) and CASP1 were greatly increased (p < 0.0001) even when compared to the H1N1 group. We propose that the SARS-CoV-2 pathogenesis is connected to the inflammasome complex activation. Further studies are still warranted to elucidate the pathophysiology of the disease.

Non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) such as social distancing and travel restrictions have been introduced to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus (hereinafter Covid). In many countries of the Global South, NPIs are affecting rural livelihoods, but in-depth empirical data on these impacts are limited. We traced the differentiated impacts of Covid NPIs throughout the start of the pandemic May to July 2020. We conducted qualitative weekly phone interviews (n = 441) with 92 panelists from nine contrasting rural communities across Mozambique (3-7 study weeks), exploring how panelists' livelihoods changed and how the NPIs intersected with existing vulnerabilities, and created new exposures. The NPIs significantly re-shaped many livelihoods and placed greatest burdens on those with precarious incomes, women, children and the elderly, exacerbating existing vulnerabilities. Transport and trading restrictions and rising prices for consumables including food meant some respondents were concerned about dying not of Covid, but of hunger because of the disruptions caused by NPIs. No direct health impacts of the pandemic were reported in these communities during our interview period. Most market-orientated income diversification strategies largely failed to provide resilience to the NPI shocks. The exception was one specific case linked to a socially-minded value chain for baobab, where a strong duty of care helped avoid the collapse of incomes seen elsewhere. In contrast, agricultural and charcoal value chains either collapsed or saw producer prices and volumes reduced. The hyper-covariate, unprecedented nature of the shock caused significant restrictions on livelihoods through trading and transport limits and thus a region-wide decline in cash generation opportunities, which was seen as being unlike any prior shock. The scale of human-made interventions and their repercussions thus raises questions about the roles of institutional actors, diversification and socially-minded trading partners in addressing coping and vulnerability both conceptually and in policy-making.

α-tocopherol is found in high concentrations in avocado fruit mesocarp, however, its accumulation and genetic control during maturation and ripening has not been elucidated. Based in the relevance of VTE1 and VTE5 genes in tocopherol biosynthesis and aiming to determine the association between tocopherol accumulation and expression of tocopherol biosynthetic genes, gene expression of VTE1 and VTE5 were evaluated through the time during three developmental stages: before harvest at 100, 160 and 220 days after flowering (DAF) and after harvest (220 DAF + 5) in two contrasting avocado genotypes (San Miguel and AVO40). San Miguel reached the highest levels at 220 DAF, whereas AVO40 increased α-tocopherol only after ripening (220 DAF + 5). A genome-wide search for VTE1 and VTE5 allowed to identify one and three genes, respectively. Both genotypes showed contrasting patterns of gene expression. Interestingly, AVO40 showed a highly positive correlation between α-tocopherol levels and gene expression of VTE1 and all VTE5 variants. On the other hand, San Miguel showed only a positive correlation between α-tocopherol level and VTE1gene expression.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the influence of surface treatment on roughness (SA), topography, and shear bond strength (SBS) of computer-aided designer and manufacture (CAD/CAM) zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate (ZLS) and feldspathic (FEL) glass-ceramics. MATERIALS AND METHODS: FEL and ZLS specimens were submitted to 5% or 10% hydrofluoric acid (HF) or self-etching ceramic primer (MEP) and different application times (20, 40, and 60 s), or to sandblasting (Control, 20 s). Resin cement cylinders were bonded to the specimens and tested in shear (n = 10) after 24 h and 16-months of water storage. SA and topography were evaluated by atomic force (AFM, n = 10) and scanning electron microscopy. Data were analyzed by ANOVA and Bonferroni test (α = 0.05). RESULTS: Sandblasting promoted the highest SA for ZLS, but 10% HF (40, 60 s) promoted higher SBS at 16 months. 10% HF produced the highest SA for FEL, but sandblasting and 5% HF (20 s) maintained SBS after 16 months, without differences from 10% HF (20 s) (p > 0.05). Overall, MEP produced lower SA and SBS among groups (p < 0.05). HF displayed greater morphological changes on FEL. CONCLUSION: 10% HF (40 s) provided better results for ZLS, while 5% or 10% HF (20 s) was suitable for FEL. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Surface treatments influenced SA, topography, and SBS of materials. HF etching is the surface treatment of choice for both CAD/CAM glass-ceramics.

BACKGROUND: Bulk-fill materials can facilitate the restorative procedure mainly for deep and wide posterior cavities. The purpose of this study was to evaluate flexural strength (biaxial flexural strength [BFS]) and microhardness (Knoop microhardness [KHN]) at different depths of bulk-fill materials. METHODS: Five bulk-fill materials were tested: two light-curable composite resins, one dual-cure composite, one bioactive restorative, and a high-viscosity glass ionomer. A conventional composite was used as control. BFS and KHN were tested at different depths. Data was analyzed by two- and one-way ANOVAs, respectively and Tukey's post-hoc (α=0.05). RESULTS: The high-viscosity glass ionomer material presented the lowest BFS at all depths. KHN for the two light-curable and the dual-cure bulk-fill resin composites was reduced following an increase in restoration depth, while the conventional composite, the bioactive material, and the high-viscosity glass ionomer were not affected. CONCLUSION: There are differences in the properties of the tested materials at 4 mm depth, showing that the studied properties of some materials vary according to the cavity depth, although the results are material dependent. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Mechanical properties of light-cured, bulk-fill materials may be affected by inadequate polymerization. Clinicians should consider complementary strategies to achieve adequate polymerization at high-increment depths.

AIM AND OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of ozonated water used as an irrigant and dentin-cleaning solution on the bond strength of fiberglass pins in vitro, comparing it with the commonly used solutions. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Seventy-seven bovine roots were randomly divided into seven groups according to the irrigant and dentin-cleaning solution to be used: HP/HP, 2.5% sodium hypochlorite; DA/DA, distilled water; CHX/CHX, 2% chlorhexidine; OA/OA, 4 ppm ozonated water; HP/DA; HP/CHX; and HP/OA. In each group, the root canals were endodontically prepared by using the corresponding irrigant and stored in DA; after 7 days, they were cleared and cleaned with the corresponding cleaning solution. The fiberglass pins were cemented by using self-adhesive cement. After 7 days, the roots were sectioned (six discs each) and submitted to the push-out test. The type of fracture was analyzed with a 4.5x stereoscopic magnifying glass. The data were analyzed by the analysis of variance and the Tukey test at a 5% significance level. RESULTS: The OA/OA (11.67), HP/HP (11.21), and HP/OA (9.71) groups showed the highest mean push-out bond strength (MPa) in the cervical third. The same trend was maintained in the middle and apical thirds. CONCLUSION: Ozonated water and 2.5% sodium hypochlorite are the most relevant solutions for root dentin treatment. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Teeth treated with ozonated water, sodium hypochlorite, and a combination of the two showed greater bond strength than those treated with other solutions.

Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) is an abnormality that occurs in premature neonate lung development. The pathophysiology is uncertain, but the inflammatory response to lung injury may be the responsible pathway. The objective of this study is to evaluate the role of interleukins 6, 8, 10, and 17 through the anatomopathological and immunohistochemical study of the lungs of premature neonates with BPD. Thirty-two cases of neonatal autopsies from the Pathology Department of the Clinics Hospital of the Universidade Federal do Paraná, who presented between 1991 and 2005 were selected. The sample included neonates less than 34 weeks of gestational age who underwent oxygen therapy and had pulmonary formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) samples. Pulmonary specimens were later classified into three groups according to histopathological and morphometric changes (classic BPD, new BPD, and without BPD) and subjected to immunohistochemical analysis. The antibodies selected for the study were anti-IL-6, anti-IL-8, anti-IL-10, and anti-IL-17A monoclonal antibodies. IL-6, IL-8, and IL-10 showed no significant differences in tissue expression among the groups. IL-17A had higher tissue immunoreactivity in the group without BPD compared with the classic BPD group (1686 vs. 866 µm2, p = 0.029). This study showed that the involvement of interleukins 6, 8, and 10 might not be significantly different between the two types of BPD. We speculated that IL-17A could be a protective factor in this disease.

The effect of short-range disorder in nodal line semimetals is studied by numerically exact means. For arbitrary small disorder, a novel semimetallic phase is unveiled for which the momentum-space amplitude of the ground-state wave function is concentrated around the nodal line and follows a multifractal distribution. At a critical disorder strength, a semimetal to compressible metal transition occurs, coinciding with a multi- to single-fractality transition. The universality class of this critical point is characterized by the correlation length and dynamical exponents. At considerably higher disorder, an Anderson metal-insulator transition takes place. Our results show that the nature of the semimetallic phase in nonclean samples is fundamentally different from a clean nodal semimetal.

KEY MESSAGE: DNA methylation, morphogenesis and gene expression during the somatic embryogenesis of Coconut are affected by 5-Azacytidine pretreatments, indicating that DNA methylation is an important factor throughout this process. Somatic embryogenesis (SE) is a process that can aid in the production of elite Cocos nucifera palms. It has been well established that epigenetic mechanisms are regulators of cell differentiation programs; however, their role in the coconut somatic embryogenesis has not yet been addressed. To this end, the morphogenetic changes, the global DNA methylation and the expression profiles of the SE-related genes and DNA methyltransferases genes were evaluated during the SE process, with and without the presence of 5-Azacytidine (AzaC). The results show that three days of pretreatments with 15 µM and 20 µM of AzaC significantly increased early somatic embryo formation (four- and tenfold, respectively). A clear peak of the global percentage of DNA methylation (approximately 13%) was determined at the beginning of the culture, followed by a re-establishing stage and a steady increase thereafter; in all cases, the levels of DNA methylation were lower after the pretreatments with AzaC. Additionally, the expression profiles of the SERK, WUS, BBM and LEC genes are modulated during the SE process and the pretreatments with AzaC affect the expression profiles of these genes, even at early stages. Furthermore, increased levels of expression were observed for the genes encoding for DNA methyltransferases (MET, CMT and DRM) at early and late stages of SE, indicating that DNA methylation is an important factor throughout the SE.

Acinetobacter baumannii is an emerging pathogen associated with nosocomial infections and multidrug resistance. Polymyxin B has been used to treat infections caused by multidrug-resistant (MDR) A. baumannii but an increase in polymyxin B resistance has been observed. We aimed to determine the diversity, antimicrobial susceptibility, presence of polymyxin B heteroresistance and adaptive resistance in 72 A. baumannii clinical isolates from two public hospitals in Rio de Janeiro. The isolates were identified by sequencing of rpoB gene. Determination of the genetic diversity of isolates was performed by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis and oxacillinases genes were detected by polymerase chain reaction. The polymyxin B heteroresistance was analyzed by population analysis profile and adaptive resistance was evaluated after serial daily passages of isolates in broth containing increasing polymyxin B concentrations. The results showed that 49% of the isolates were collected from respiratory system and 62% were MDR, while 35% were extensively drug resistant. Additionally, all the isolates carried blaOXA-23-like, blaOXA-51-like genes and ISAba1, while 1% had blaOXA-24-like gene. The association of ISAba1-blaOXA-23 was found in 96% of the isolates. Polymyxin B heteroresistance was found in 36% of the isolates and polymyxin B adaptive resistance was not found in the isolates. Our study demonstrated the high resistance to antimicrobials used in clinical practice and the spread of oxacillinases genes and insertion sequence (IS). We also reported the presence of heteroresistance to polymyxin B used as a last-resort therapy for MDR A. baumannii.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of human saliva decontamination protocols on bond strength of resin cement to zirconia (Y-PSZ), wettability, and microbial decontamination. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Zirconia plates were sandblasted and divided into (a) not contaminated, (b) contaminated with human saliva and: (c) not cleaned, (d) cleaned with air-water spray, (e) cleaned with 70% ethanol, (f) cleaned with Ivoclean, or (g) cleaned with nonthermal atmospheric plasma (NTAP). The wettability and microbial decontamination of the surfaces were determined after saliva contamination or cleaning. Monobond Plus (Ivoclar Vivadent) was applied after cleaning, followed by Variolink LC (Ivoclar Vivadent). The samples were stored 1 week before shear bond strength (SBS) testing, and data (SBS and wettability) were analyzed by one-way analysis of variance and Tukey test (α = .05). RESULTS: Saliva contamination reduced SBS to zirconia compared to not contaminated. Both Ivoclean and NTAP produced higher SBS compared to not cleaned and were not significantly different from the not contaminated. Ivoclean produced the highest contact angle, and NTAP the lowest. With the exception of using just water-spray, all cleaning protocols decontaminated the specimens. CONCLUSIONS: Both Ivoclean and NTAP overcame the effects of saliva contamination, producing an SBS to zirconia comparable to the positive control. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Dental ceramics should be cleaned prior to resin cementation to eliminate the effects of human saliva contamination, and Ivoclean and NTAP are considered suitable materials for this purpose.

We investigate the phase diagram of the Haldane-Falicov-Kimball model-a model combining topology, interactions, and spontaneous disorder at finite temperatures. Using an unbiased numerical method, we map out the phase diagram on the interaction-temperature plane. Along with known phases, we unveil an insulating charge ordered state with gapless excitations and a temperature-driven gapless topological insulating phase. Intrinsic-temperature-generated-disorder is the key ingredient explaining the unexpected behavior. Our findings support the possibility of having temperature-driven topological transitions into gapped and gapless topological insulating phases in mass unbalanced systems with two fermionic species.

We consider an interacting quantum field theory on a curved two-dimensional manifold that we construct by geometrically deforming a flat hexagonal lattice by the insertion of a defect. Depending on how the deformation is done, the resulting geometry acquires a locally nonvanishing curvature that can be either positive or negative. Fields propagating on this background are forced to satisfy boundary conditions modulated by the geometry and that can be assimilated by a nondynamical gauge field. We present an explicit example where curvature and boundary conditions compete in altering the way symmetry breaking takes place, resulting in a surprising behavior of the order parameter in the vicinity of the defect. The effect described here is expected to be generic and of relevance in a variety of situations.
