RESUMO

This study aimed to determine the clinicopathological predictive factors of peripheral T-cell lymphoma, not otherwise specified (PTCL, NOS), and nodal T-follicular helper cell lymphoma, angioimmunoblastic-type (nTFH, AI-type). In this single-centered, retrospective study, medical records of 59 patients who were diagnosed with PTCL, NOS, or nTFH, AI-type from March 2007 to September 2022 were reviewed. The clinicopathological variables, including immunohistochemistry(IHC) subgroups, distinguishing TBX21 from the GATA3 subgroups were analyzed. Overall, 28 patients (75.7%) in the TBX21 group were PTCL, NOS. There were 9 (24.3%) patients in the GATA3 group. In univariable analyses, lymphoma subtype, age, and performance status were associated with progression-free survival (PFS), and overall survival (OS). In multivariable analyses, lymphoma subtype, and performance status were related to PFS and OS (P = 0.012, P < 0.001, P = 0.006, and P < 0.001, respectively). The GATA3 subgroup tended to have a worse prognosis in univariable analyses; however, it became more insignificant in multivariable when lymphoma subtype and performance status were adjusted (P = 0.065, P = 0.180, P = 0.972, and P = 0.265, respectively). The double-positive group showed variable prognoses of better PFS and worse OS. PD-1 and PD-L1 were associated with the EBV in situ hybridization (P = 0.027, and P = 0.005), and PD-1 was associated with CD30 expression (P = 0.043). This study demonstrated the potential of IHC classification to predict prognosis for PTCL, NOS, as well as nTFH AI-type, although further validation is necessary. Treatments targeting CD30, PD-1, and PD-L1 appear promising for lymphoma treatment.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Acellular dermal matrix (ADM) is treated using various devitalization and aseptic processing methods. The processing effects on ADM were evaluated by histochemical tests. METHODS: From January 2014 to December 2016, 18 patients [average age, 43.0 (range, 30-54) years] who underwent breast reconstruction with an ADM and tissue expander were prospectively enrolled. During the permanent implant replacement, a biopsy of the ADM was performed. We used three different human-derived products, namely, Alloderm®, Allomend®, and Megaderm®. Hematoxylin and eosin, CD68, CD3, CD31, and smooth muscle actin were used to evaluate the collagen structure, inflammation, angiogenesis, and myofibroblast infiltration. Each ADM was semi-quantitatively analyzed. RESULTS: Significant differences in collagen degradation, acute inflammation, and myofibroblast infiltration were observed among the ADMs. Collagen degeneration (p<0.001) and myofibroblast infiltration (smooth muscle actin-positive, p=0.018; CD31-negative, p=0.765) were the most severe in Megaderm®. Acute inflammation, represented by CD68, was most severe in Alloderm® (p=0.024). Both radiation and freeze-drying treatment physically damaged the collagen structure. Collagen degeneration was most severe in Megaderm®, followed by Allomend® and Alloderm®. Since Alloderm® is treated using chemicals, an assessment of the chemical irritation is warranted. CONCLUSIONS: The biopsy results were inconclusive. Therefore, to better interpret processing, more large-scale, serial, histochemical studies of each ADM are needed. RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Despite recent advances in the treatment of drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS), the mainstay of treatment involves discontinuing the culprit drugs and administering topical or systemic corticosteroid. OBJECTIVE: The clinical use of a tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha inhibitor was rarely explored in treatment of DRESS. METHODS: We present a case of corticosteroid-induced DRESS that was successfully treated with a TNF-alpha inhibitor without sequalae. RESULTS: This is the first case report that showed the clinical use of a TNF alpha inhibitor in treating corticosteroids- induced DRESS and immediate hypersensitivity reactions. The HLA-B*5801 was identified as a possible genetic factor associated with a corticosteroid-induced DRESS. CONCLUSIONS: A TNF-alpha inhibitor could be a primary option in treating DRESS, especially in patients with hypersensitivity reaction to corticosteroids.

RESUMO

Background and Objectives: Extranodal marginal zone lymphoma of the mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) type is the most common subtype of the ocular adnexal lymphoma. Despite its excellent prognosis, some patients experience partial remission or progressive disease. We aimed to evaluate clinicopathologic differences in the treatment responder group by comparing complete remission (CR) and non-complete remission (non-CR). Materials and Methods: This study retrospectively reviewed 48 patients who were diagnosed with ocular adnexal MALT lymphoma at Ulsan University Hospital between March 2002 and August 2018. Patients who were followed up for less than 6 months were excluded. Histologic and clinical features were analyzed. The patients were divided into two groups: CR and non-CR. Results: Among the 48 patients, 33 achieved CR and 15 achieved non-CR during the median follow-up period of 40.00 months (range, 7-109 months). In univariable analysis, more patients tend to undergo treatment in the CR group, and post-radiotherapy (post-RT) SUVmax, PET and serum lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) levels were higher in the non-CR group (p = 0.043, p = 0.016, and p = 0.042, respectively). In a multivariable analysis, only application of treatment, including radiotherapy or chemotherapy with immunotherapy, was related to CR (odd ratio 7.301, 95% confidence interval 1.273-41.862, p = 0.026). In subgroup analysis according to the site of involvement, none of the variables were significant except for the post-RT SUVmax of PET and level of serum LDH in the non-conjunctiva group (p = 0.026, and p = 0.037, respectively). Seven (14.6%) patients had a recurrence, and those with a recurring site other than the primary site had a higher Ki-67 labeling index, although it was not statistically significant (9.56% vs. 18.00%, p = 0.095). Conclusions: Although belonging to the early stages, the non-CR rate was high in patients with high serum LDH levels, and recurred patients had higher Ki-67. Thus, considering active treatment is recommended in this group of patients.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Inflammation is emerging as a potential mechanism of cervical carcinogenesis. However, few studies have investigated the association between host inflammatory status and the natural course of cervical precursor lesion. The aim of this study was to assess the probability of LSIL regression, associated with an inflammatory biomarker, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP). METHODS: In a longitudinal cohort study, female participants were examined annually or biannually using cervical cytology between 2006 and 2015. Incident LSIL cases were included in the analysis, with regression defined as at least one consecutive normal cytologic result. A total of 520 women aged 22-64 years were followed up for LSIL regression. The multivariable-adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) for LSIL regression were estimated using a parametric proportional hazards model. RESULTS: During 827.5 person-years of follow-up, 486 out of 520 subjects (93.5%) showed LSIL regression. After adjusting several important potential confounders, a higher quartile of hs-CRP levels was significantly associated with a lower rate of regression (for quartile 4 vs quartile 1, inverse HR 1.33; 95% CI, 1.04-1.69; P for trend = 0.028). CONCLUSIONS: The low rate of spontaneous regression recorded in women with higher hs-CRP lends support to the role of the perturbated host inflammatory status in cervical carcinogenesis, and suggests that hs-CRP level could help monitor LSIL.

RESUMO

The purpose of our study was to evaluate the role of macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) in the differentiation of tendon-derived stem cells (TdSCs) under hyperglycemic conditions. In the in vivo experiment, rats were classified into diabetic (DM) and non-DM groups depending on the intraperitoneal streptozotocin (STZ) or saline injection. Twelve-week after STZ injection, the supraspinatus tendon was harvested and prepared for histological evaluation and real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction for osteochondrogenic (aggrecan, BMP-2, and Sox9) and tenogenic (Egr1, Mkx, scleraxis, type 1 collagen, and Tnmd) markers. For the in vitro experiment, TdSCs were isolated from healthy rat Achilles tendons. Cultured TdSCs were treated with methylglyoxal and recombinant MIF or MIF gene knockdown to determine the effect of hyperglycemic conditions and MIF on the differentiation function of TdSCs. These conditions were classified into four groups: hyperglycemic-control group, hyperglycemic-recombinant-MIF group, hyperglycemic-knockdown-MIF group, and normal-control group. The mRNA expression of osteochondrogenic and tenogenic markers was compared among the groups. In the in vivo experiment, the mRNA expression of all osteochondrogenic and tenogenic differentiation markers in the DM group was significantly higher and lower than that in the non-DM group, respectively. Similarly, in the in vitro experiments, the expression of all osteochondrogenic and tenogenic differentiation markers was significantly upregulated and downregulated, respectively, in the hyperglycemic-control group compared to that in the normal-control group. The hyperglycemic-knockdown-MIF group demonstrated significantly decreased expression of all osteochondrogenic differentiation markers and increased expression of only some tenogenic differentiation markers compared with the hyperglycemic-control group. In contrast, the hyperglycemic-recombinant-MIF group showed significantly increased expression of all osteochondrogenic differentiation markers, but no significant difference in any tenogenic marker level, compared to the hyperglycemic-control group. These results suggest that tendon homeostasis could be affected by hyperglycemic conditions, and MIF appears to alter the differentiation of TdSCs via enhancement of the osteochondrogenic differentiation in hyperglycemic conditions. These are preliminary findings, and must be confirmed in a further study.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Although the incidence of early gastric cancer (EGC) continues to rise, there have been few studies on the intra-gastric distribution and locational characteristics of EGCs. In addition, there has been no attempt to visualize the intra-gastric distribution of EGCs using a merged tumor map. METHODS: We investigated the anatomic distribution of 644 cases of EGCs and analyzed the correlation between clinicopathologic findings and location by dividing areas of the stomach vertically and transversely. Merged tumor maps were generated using 310 surgically resected cases. RESULTS: Early gastric cancer was most commonly located in the antrum (57.5%) along the lesser curvature (37.8%). The intra-gastric distributions were similar in the merged tumor maps. Vertically, cancers of the middle third were associated with younger patient age, larger tumor size, and more frequent poorly differentiated (PD) or signet ring cell histology than cancers in other sites. Submucosal invasion was most frequently observed in the upper third. When divided transversely, tumors in the anterior or posterior wall showed more frequent PD or signet ring cell histology than those along the lesser or greater curvatures. CONCLUSIONS: EGC is the most prevalent in the antrum along the lesser curvature and has characteristic locational features, including histologic type, invasion depth, patient age, and tumor size. These results will improve the endoscopic detection rate of EGC and help to determine endoscopic resectability.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Carcinogenesis and tumor growth are associated with chronic inflammation and the host immune system. Here, we investigated the clinical significance and relationship between tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) and hematologic parameters in patients with breast cancer. METHODS: Invasive ductal breast cancer patients (N = 145) who underwent surgery were retrospectively evaluated. Samples were obtained using a core needle biopsy for CD8+, FOXP3+ TIL assessment. Blood lymphocytes, neutrophils, monocytes, and platelets were obtained by peripheral venous punctures. RESULTS: CD8 + TILs were significantly associated with absolute lymphocyte count (ALC) and the absolute monocyte count (AMC). Low LMR (ALC/AMC) (cut-off - 5.3, range = 0.73-12.31) was associated with poor overall survival (OS) (p = 0.010), disease-free survival (DFS) (p = 0.005). However, in subgroup analysis, LMR did not have any value as a prognostic factor in HER2-positive breast cancers. TILs had different prognostic impacts across breast cancer subtypes, although they were not statistically significant. The treatment response after NAC tended to improve in breast cancer patients with high FOXP3+ TILs, low NLR (neutrophil count/ALC) (FOXP3 p for trend = 0.006, NLR p for trend = 0.063). CONCLUSIONS: A relevance between TILs and hematologic parameters in breast cancer was demonstrated. The influence of the immune system on breast cancer progression may differ by subtype.

RESUMO

Brachyury has been characterized as a driver of epithelial-mesenchymal transition process which is regarded as an important mechanism of cancer cell invasion and metastatic progression. The status of tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes has been proposed to predict response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy in breast cancer. We investigated the clinical significance and value of tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes and brachyury as biomarkers to predict treatment responses to neoadjuvant chemotherapy in breast cancer. We also examined the correlation of the Neo-Bioscore with tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes and brachyury to indirectly predict long-term outcome. This retrospective study included a series of 44 consecutive patients treated between January 2011 and December 2015. All patient samples were obtained using core needle biopsy before neoadjuvant chemotherapy. The relationship of expression of Brachyury and tumor-infiltrating lymphocyte subsets (CD8+, forkhead box protein 3 tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes) with clinicopathological factors was assessed to identify its predictive role with respect to tumor response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy and the outcome. Of 44 patients, 6 showed no response, 31 had partial response, and 7 demonstrated pathological complete response. Forkhead box protein 3 was significantly higher in the response group than in the no response group (no response = 2.6, partial response = 7.0, complete response = 9.7, p = 0.020). Brachyury expression was inversely associated with response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy, but the difference was not statistically significant ( p = 0.62). We also observed a significant association between forkhead box protein 3 ( p = 0.001) and the Neo-Bioscore, while only a marginal difference was observed with CD8+ expression ( p = 0.074). This study demonstrated that forkhead box protein 3 expression has value as the only independent marker that predicts a good response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy and that it is related with a good prognosis according to the Neo-Bioscore. Brachyury was significantly associated with estrogen receptor positive and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 negative status; further study would be needed to clarify how it affects treatment prognosis.

RESUMO

Programmed cell death-1 (PD-1) and programmed cell death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) are new therapeutic targets in cancer immunotherapy. The aim of this study was to investigate the clinicopathological characteristics of PD-1 and PD-L1 expression in extranodal natural killer/Tcell lymphoma, nasal type (ENKTL). We performed PD-1 and PD-L1 immunostaining in 79 ENKTL biopsy samples and retrospectively analyzed medical records of all 79 patients from four tertiary referral hospitals. The expression of PD-1 and PD-L1 by tumor cells and/or infiltrating immune cells was evaluated. The expression rates of PD-L1 in tumor cells and infiltrating immune cells were 79.7 and 78.5 %, respectively, whereas PD-1 in tumor cells and infiltrating immune cells were 1.3 and 11.4 %. The PD-L1 positivity in tumor cells and infiltrating immune cells was significantly associated with low international prognostic index (IPI) (P = 0.044 and 0.037, respectively). Patients with normal range of serum lactate dehydrogenase demonstrated a significantly higher PD-L1 positivity in tumor cells (P = 0.020). PD-L1-positive patients had a trend toward better overall survival compared with that in patients with PD-L1-negative in tumor cells and infiltrating immune cells (P = 0.498 and 0.435, respectively). The expression rate of PD-L1 was up to 79.7 % in ENKTL, while PD-1 expression rate was very low. This is the first report describing the clinicopathological features and survival outcome according to expression of PD-1 and PD-L1 in ENKTL.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Smad4 and GATA3 proteins are known prognostic markers in various cancers. Smad4 is a mediator linked to both tumour suppression and progression. GATA3 is a regulator of development and morphogenesis of the mammary gland. We assessed and compared the predictive performance of Smad4 and GATA3 for clinical outcomes in patients with breast cancer. METHODS: The combined expression pattern based on Smad4+/- and GATA3+/- was evaluated by immunostaining using breast cancer tissue microarray, and the relationships between protein expression and clinicopathological variables were analysed. RESULTS: Smad4 expression was only associated with an ill-defined tumour border, whereas GATA3 was associated with several good prognostic factors. On analysis of combined markers, there was a significant difference in the expression of fascin (an important factor for cancer invasiveness) between the Smad4+/GATA3- and Smad4-/GATA3+ groups. Smad4+/GATA3- was correlated with worse clinicopathological parameters, relapse-free survival (RFS), and overall survival (OS), compared to Smad4-/GATA3+. CONCLUSION: Combined markers of Smad4/GATA3 showed a superior performance compared to single markers for predicting RFS and OS in patients with breast cancer.

RESUMO

Cell cycle regulatory proteins including p16, p27, and p53 are well studied in various cancers. However, their single or concurrent roles related with the clinicopathological parameters are not clearly recognized. We analyzed the expression of p16, p27, and p53 cell cycle regulatory proteins in papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC). To determine the prognostic significance of cell cycle regulatory proteins, 107 PTCs were examined. We analyzed the individual expression of p16, p27, and p53 and their concurrent expressions, with the relationship to various clinicopathological parameters including differentiation from benign lesions. High expression of p16 and p53 and low expression of p27 were related with the distinguishing of PTC from benign lesions. In addition, normal thyroidal tissue showed higher p27 expression than nodular hyperplasia. In relation to extrathyroidal extension (ETE), the low expression of p27 was related with the presence of ETE. The low expression of p27 and high expression of p16 and p53 may affect the development of PTC. In addition, low p27 expression is related with the existence of ETE.

RESUMO

AIMS: Breast cancers are heterogeneous, making it essential to recognise several biomarkers for cancer outcome predictions. Ki67 proliferation index and B cell lymphoma 2 (BCL2) proteins are widely used as prognostic indicators in many types of malignancies. While Ki67 is a marker of normal or tumour cell proliferation, BCL2 plays a central role in antiproliferative activities. A combination of these two biomarkers with contrary purposes can provide enhanced prognostic accuracy than an analysis using a single biomarker. METHODS: We evaluated Ki67 and BCL2 expression with 203 cases of breast cancer. The relative expression of each biomarker named as Ki67/BCL2 index was divided into two groups (low vs high) with the use of area under receiver operating characteristic curves. RESULTS: There were significant correlations between Ki67/BCL2 index and clinicopathological findings such as age, tumour stage, size and necrosis, histological grade, extensive intraductal component, lymphatic and vascular invasion, oestrogen receptor, progesterone receptor, human epithelial growth factor receptor 2 and p53 expression (all p<0.05). In univariate and multivariate analyses, high Ki67/BCL2 index correlated with shorter disease-free survival and overall survival in patients with early stage invasive ductal carcinoma (all p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The Ki67/BCL2 index should be considered as a prognostic predictor in patients with early stage invasive ductal carcinoma.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Opportunistic infections are relatively rare in early human immunodeficiency virus infection, especially infection with Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Here, we report a patient who presented with acute human immunodeficiency virus and multidrug-resistant M. tuberculosis co-infections. CASE PRESENTATION: A 27-year-old homosexual male was admitted for fever, cough, and hepatitis. At the time of admission, the p24 antigen was detected in his serum, indicating that he had an acute human immunodeficiency virus infection. He was also diagnosed with disseminated tuberculosis spreading to the lung and skin. Anti-tuberculosis medication had been started earlier with one-week intervals of highly active antiretroviral therapy. Despite prolonged anti-tuberculosis treatment, the patient developed tuberculous meningitis on the 50th day of admission. Multidrug-resistant tuberculosis was cultured from his sputum and cerebrospinal fluid. The patient was successfully treated with second line anti-tuberculosis medication and antiretroviral treatment. CONCLUSION: This is the first case of acute human immunodeficiency virus and multi drug-resistance tuberculosis co-infections. This case indicates that tuberculosis infection should be considered even in patients with acute human immunodeficiency virus infection.

RESUMO

Introduction: Erosive pustular dermatosis of the scalp (EPDS) is a rare and recalcitrant condition in which chronic scalp pustules and erosive patches are diagnosed by nondiagnostic laboratory tests and histopathological tests. Although various precipitating factors including trauma have been reported, erosive pustular dermatosis arising on the long-standing burn scars is rare. Case Presentation: We report three cases of EPDS arising on long-standing burn scars. Based on clinical and histological findings, erosive pustular dermatosis was diagnosed and successfully treated with topical steroid ointment. Conclusion: We propose that chronic burn scar is another precipitating factors for EPDS and clinicians should consider EPDS in differential diagnoses of erosive pustular dermatosis in long-standing burn scars on the scalp.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Matrix metalloproteinase 11 (MMP-11) is a matrix degrading enzyme known to be involved in the remodeling of extracellular matrix proteins. This enzyme recently has been reported to play a key role in tumor progression and results in poor clinical outcomes for several different types of tumors. METHODS: A total of 192 patients diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma between 2000 and 2005 were included in this study. MMP-11 expression in tumors and stromal fibroblast-like cells was analyzed by immunohistochemical staining on a tissue microarray. Subsequently, evaluation of the associations between MMP-11 expression and clinicopathological characteristics was performed. RESULTS: MMP-11 expression of stromal fibroblast-like cells was correlated with prognostic factors, including tumor size, metastasis, histological grade, central tumor fibrosis, p53 expression, and luminal A subtype and was linked to therapeutic markers, such as ER and HER2 (all p < 0.05). There was a significant relationship between worse overall survival and MMP-11 expression in both tumors and stromal fibroblast-like cells (all p < 0.05). In multivariate analysis, MMP-11 expression of stromal fibroblast-like cells was still significantly associated with poor prognosis (p = 0.043). CONCLUSIONS: MMP-11 expression was significantly related to clinicopathological parameters, which may be essential to the prediction of disease outcome in patients with invasive ductal carcinoma of the breast.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Atrophic gastritis may be inversely associated with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) symptoms. The aim of this study was to determine the association between GERD symptoms, endoscopic atrophy grade, and histologic atrophy score. METHODOLOGY: A total of 1,555 consecutive subjects who underwent esophagogastroduodenoscopy for health check-ups were enrolled prospectively. All persons were given a self-reported questionnaire for GERD symptoms (heartburn and/or regurgitation) and were classified into the following two groups: GERD symptoms group and no GERD symptoms group. Endoscopic grade of atrophic gastritis was assessed by the atrophic pattern system. The histologic atrophy score was evaluated semi-quantitatively by the updated Sydney classification. RESULTS: Of the 1,555 patients, 314 (20.2%) had GERD symptoms at least once a week and 1,241 (79.8%) had no GERD symptoms. The prevalence of the O-type atrophic gastritis (4.1% vs. 8.9%) and moderate or severe atrophic gastritis (1.9% vs. 4.8%) was significantly lower in the GERD symptoms group (p <0.05). The association between GERD symptoms and moderate or severe atrophic gastritis persisted after adjustment for potential confounders (p = 0.012). Of the 304 subjects who underwent endoscopic biopsies, 57 (18.8%) and 247 (81.2%) were in the GERD symptoms and no symptoms groups, respectively. There were no significant differences in H. pylori infections, H. pylori density, neutrophil activity, and degree of inflammation between the two groups. However, the scores of intestinal metaplasia and glandular atrophy were significantly lower in the GERD symptoms group (p <0.05). CONCLUSIONS: GERD symptoms are inversely associated with the endoscopic atrophy grade and the histologic atrophy score.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND/AIM: Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS) is a specialized procedure for removing skin tumors. Intraoperative assessment of the resection margin (RM) status using frozen section examination is a crucial component of MMS. This study aimed to identify significant clinicopathological characteristics that could help surgeons determine the optimal surgical extent. PATIENTS AND METHODS: One hundred and fifty-one patients with primary skin tumors were included. The relationship between RM involvement and the clinico-pathological characteristics was analyzed for each histological type. RESULTS: Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) was significantly more likely to exhibit positive RMs and required additional excision during MMS compared to squamous cell carcinoma. In addition, the probability of RM involvement was significantly higher in high-risk BCC subtypes. CONCLUSION: When planning MMS, considering the histological type and presence of high-risk morphology may help surgeons perform more effective procedures.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND/AIM: Primary central nervous system diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (CNS DLBCL) is a rare entity, accounting for 3-4% of intracranial neoplasms. This study aimed to investigate the clinicopathological characteristics of primary CNS DLBCL patients and their prognostic implication. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We collected 74 cases of clinically and pathologically confirmed primary CNS DLBCL from two institutions. Disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS) were analyzed based on various clinicopathological parameters. RESULTS: Most cases (83.8%) were classified as activated B-cell immunophenotype by Hans algorithm and cell-of-origin classification did not influence the clinical outcome. On univariate analysis, age (>60 years) and ECOG performance status (≥2) were significantly associated with shorter DFS and OS, and MYC/BCL2 co-expression significantly impacted poor DFS. An anaplastic variant was diagnosed in only 2 cases, but it raised possible association with poor outcome. On multivariate analysis, ECOG performance status and age was associated with poor prognosis. CONCLUSION: In primary CNS DLBCL, age and performance status revealed the most significant association with prognosis. Cell-of-origin classification was not a significant prognostic factor in contrast to systemic DLBCL.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND/AIM: The prognostic value of programmed death ligand-1 (PD-L1) expression in triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) has not been sufficiently investigated. In this study, we examined whether PD-L1 expression status is associated with clinicopathological features and outcomes of patients with TNBC. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Immunostaining for PD-L1 SP142 was performed on tissue microarrays containing 132 TNBC samples. High PD-L1 expression was defined as ≥10% of the tumor area occupied by PD-L1-expressing cells. RESULTS: Thirty-five (26.5%) patients showed high PD-L1 SP142 expression on immune cells (ICs). High IC PD-L1 expression was significantly correlated with smaller tumor size (p=0.030), absence of lymphovascular invasion (p=0.024), and fewer lymph node metastases (p=0.002). Multivariate survival analysis revealed that high IC PD-L1 expression independently predicted better disease-free survival (DFS) of TNBC patients. CONCLUSION: High PD-L1 SP142 expression on ICs was significantly associated with favorable clinicopathological parameters and better outcomes in patients with TNBC. Our observations suggest that high IC PD-L1 expression can be used as an independent prognostic marker for predicting better DFS in patients with TNBC.
