RESUMO

The amount of industrial pollution entering the environment and its impact on living organisms is an ongoing concern. At the same time, due to an increasing awareness, new methods of wastewater treatment are being explored that are not only effective but also environmentally acceptable. Meeting environmental standards for permitted concentrations is a necessity, but investigating the effects of wastewater on living organisms is also an important issue. In this paper, the influence of metal ions (Fe(III), Cr(III), Ni(II), Cu(II)) in industrial wastewater from electropolishing of stainless steel on Daphnia magna has been investigated. Daphnids have been exposed to wastewater both before and after treatment (Ca(OH)2 precipitation, sorption with peat). Immobilisation in a 48-h acute toxicity test and EC50 has been determined. In the case of studied industrial wastewater, the organic content (expressed as total organic carbon) of the effluent has a positive impact in terms of the survival of D. magna and increases the range of heavy metal concentrations tolerated by them. The application of a two-stage process with Ca(OH)2 neutralisation followed by sorption with peat allows for the removal of almost 100% of metal ions from the wastewater. The reduction obtained ensured a limited impact on D. magna and a decrease in immobilisation to less than 10%. Proper execution of the wastewater treatment process ensures a reduction of its negative impact on living organisms.

RESUMO

In this work, the removal of NOM (natural organic matter) as represented by humic acid by means of electrospun nanofiber adsorptive membranes (ENAMs) is described. Polyacrylonitrile (PAN) was used for the preparation of ENAMs incorporating silica nanoparticles as adsorbents. The addition of silica to the polymer left visible changes on the structural morphology and fibers' properties of the membrane. The membrane samples were characterized by pure water permeability, contact angle measurement, SEM, XPS, and XRD. This study assesses the preliminary performance of PAN-Si membranes for the removal of natural organic matter (NOM). The membrane rejected the humic acid, a surrogate of NOM, from 69.57% to 87.5%.

RESUMO

Electrochemical metal processing is a process that generates harmful pollution. An important goal often disregarded by researchers is not only the achievement of the best possible quality of electropolished surface, but also minimising the load of metal ions in the wastewater generated in the process. The conducted experiments on the electropolishing of stainless steel in laboratory conditions, varied time, temperature and current density conditions, as well as process bath contamination (ranging from 0 to 6% Fe mass) allowed us to develop a multi-factorial mathematical model. This model offers the possibility of being able to select the process parameters recommended for achieving the desired effects. It takes into account such surface quality parameters as roughness and gloss, process duration and current density that determine power consumption, as well as the weight loss of the electropolished element that influence the rate of contamination in processing baths and wastewater. The study presents the composition of a passive film of stainless steel after the electropolishing process at the initial and final stages of the process bath's exploitation. The results obtained from XPS tests were then correlated with the results of corrosion tests and resistance to pitting corrosion in the environment of 0.1 M NaCl.
