RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Occupational function assessment is essential for rehabilitation of severe mental illness but lacks comprehensive tools. METHOD: This study examines the psychometric properties of the Chinese versions of the Vocational Cognitive Rating Scale (VCRS) and the Work Behavior Inventory (WBI) in 60 chronic patients from a psychiatric daycare center and identifies clinical correlates of occupational function measured on the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS). RESULTS: The Chinese VCRS and WBI showed adequate internal consistency, interrater and test-retest reliability, and good convergent validity with the Comprehensive Occupational Therapy Evaluation Scale. Factor analysis favored a one-factor solution of the VCRS; and a four-factor structure in the WBI including Efficiency, Social Interaction, Appropriateness, and Regularity. The VCRS and Efficiency were predicted by fewer disorganization but greater affective symptoms. Social Interaction was negatively predicted by resistance symptoms. Appropriateness was associated with all but negative symptoms. Regularity was predicted by fewer negative symptoms. Considering work behavior altogether, WBI total scores were predicted by fewer negative, fewer disorganization, and greater affective symptoms. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATION FOR PRACTICE: Findings suggest that the Chinese VCRS and WBI have sound psychometric properties and are suitable for both clinical trials and for planning personalized rehabilitation programs. RESUMO

Five new polyketides that contain tetramic acids, myceliothermophins A-E, were isolated from the thermophilic fungus Myceliophthora thermophila. Two sets of 5-alkyl-5-hydroxyl (or 5-methoxyl)-1H-pyrrol-2(5H)-one diastereomers, myceliothermophins A/B and C/D, were separated as pure compounds by using silica-gel column chromatography and recycling reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC). The relative configurations of the chiral centers in 5-alkyl-5-hydroxyl (or 5-methoxyl)-1H-pyrrol-2(5H)-one moieties were deduced from NOESY correlations. In the cytotoxic assay, the 5-(2-methylpropyldiene)-1H-pyrrol-2(5H)-one analogue (myceliothermophin E) exhibited inhibition against four cancer cell lines. In addition, the significant inhibitory effect of myceliothermophins A and C and the inactivity of myceliothermophins B and D revealed the importance of the relative configurations of 5-alkyl-5-hydroxyl (or 5-methoxyl)-1H-pyrrol-2(5H)-one moieties on their cytotoxicity potency against cancer cells.

RESUMO

Two novel thermophilic bacterial strains, with an optimum growth temperature of between 50 and 60 degrees C, were isolated from the Chi-ban Hot Springs in eastern Taiwan. Strains CB-225 and CB-226(T) were aerobic, thermophilic, non-sporulating, yellow-pigmented heterotrophic organisms. These strains exhibited an unusual denitrification reaction, reducing nitrite, but not nitrate, with the production of N2O only. On the basis of a phylogenetic analysis of 16S rDNA sequences, DNA-DNA similarity data, morphological, physiological and biochemical characteristics, and fatty acid compositions, it was found that the novel strains belonged to the genus Pseudoxanthomonas and represented a novel species within this genus, for which the name Pseudoxanthomonas taiwanensis is proposed; the type strain is CB-226(T) (= ATCC BAA-404(T) = CCRC 17172(T)). P. taiwanensis differs from the only member of the genus Pseudoxanthomonas, the mesophilic species Pseudoxanthomonas broegbernensis, in that it exhibits a higher growth temperature and different morphological characteristics, such as the absence of polar flagella.
