RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The systemic inflammatory response index (SIRI), served as a novel inflammatory biomarker, is the synthesis of neutrophils, monocytes and lymphocytes. AIMS: We hypothesized that SIRI has predictive value for contrast-associated acute kidney injury (CA-AKI) and long-term mortality in patients undergoing elective percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). METHODS: We retrospectively observed 5685 patients undergoing elective PCI from January 2012 to December 2018. Venous blood samples were collected to obtain the experimental data on the day of admission or the morning of the next day. SIRI = neutrophil count × monocyte count/lymphocyte count. CA-AKI was defined as an increase of 50% or 0.3 mg/dl in SCr from baseline within 48 h after contrast exposure. RESULTS: The incidence of CA-AKI was 6.1% (n = 352). The best cutoff value of SIRI for predicting CA-AKI was 1.39, with a sensitivity of 52.3% and a specificity of 67.3%. [AUC: 0.620, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.590-0.651, p < 0.001]. After adjusting for potential confounders, multivariate analysis showed that the high SIRI group (SIRI > 1.39) was a strong independent predictor of CA-AKI in patients undergoing elective PCI compared with the low SIRI group (SIRI ≤ 1.39) (odds ratio = 1.642, 95% CI: 1.274-2.116, p < 0.001). Additionally, COX regression analysis showed that SIRI > 1.39 was significantly associated with long-term mortality at a median follow-up of 2.8 years. [Hazard ratio (HR)=1.448, 95%CI: 1.188-1.765; p < 0.001]. Besides, Kaplan-Meier survival curve also indicated that the cumulative rate of mortality was considerably higher in the high SIRI group. CONCLUSIONS: High levels of SIRI are independent predictors of CA-AKI and long-term mortality in patients undergoing elective PCI.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Early identification of populations at high cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk and improvement of risk factors can significantly decrease the probability of CVD development and improve outcomes. Insulin resistance (IR) is a CVD risk factor. The triglyceride glucose (TyG) index is a simple and reliable index for evaluating IR. However, no clinical studies on the prognostic value of the TyG index in a high risk CVD population have been conducted. This study evaluated the relationship between the TyG index and prognosis in a high risk CVD population. METHODS: This study enrolled 35,455 participants aged 35-75 years who were at high CVD risk and visited selected health centers and community service centers between 2017 and 2021. Their general clinical characteristics and baseline blood biochemical indicators were recorded. The TyG index was calculated as ln[fasting triglyceride (mg/dl)× fasting blood glucose (mg/dl)/2]. The endpoints were all-cause death and cardiovascular death during follow-up. Cox proportional hazard models and restricted cubic spline (RCS) analysis were used to evaluate the correlation between the TyG index and endpoints. RESULTS: In the overall study population, the mean age of all participants was 57.9 ± 9.6 years, 40.7% were male, and the mean TyG index was 8.9 ± 0.6. All participants were divided into two groups based on the results of the RCS analysis, with a cut-off value of 9.83. There were 551 all-cause deaths and 180 cardiovascular deaths during a median follow-up time of 3.4 years. In the multivariate Cox proportional hazard model, participants with a TyG index ≥ 9.83 had a higher risk of all-cause death (Hazard ratio [HR] 1.86, 95% Confdence intervals [CI] 1.37-2.51, P<0.001) and cardiovascular death (HR 2.41, 95%CI 1.47-3.96, P = 0.001) than those with a TyG index < 9.83. Subgroup analysis revealed that there was no interaction between the TyG index and variables in all subgroup analyses. CONCLUSIONS: The high TyG index was associated with an increased risk of all-cause death and cardiovascular death in people at high risk of CVD. This finding demonstrates the value of the TyG index in the primary prevention of CVD. RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: In this study, we aimed to identify differentially expressed heat shock protein (HSP) profiles in the villi and decidua from patients with early missed abortion (EMA). METHODS: By using high-throughput and high-precision parallel reaction monitoring (PRM)-based targeted proteomics techniques, this study examined the abundance of HSPs in the villi and decidua of 10 patients with EMA and 10 controls. Moreover, the abundance of 3 HSPs in the villi of another 22 patients with EMA and 22 controls was verified with Western blotting and immunohistochemistry (IHC). RESULTS: There were potential differences in the abundance of 16 HSPs and 42 polypeptides in human villi and decidua compared with those of the control group. Among them, HSP90AB1, HSPD1 and HSPA13 were downregulated in abundance in villi of patients with EMA, with a statistically significant difference, which was consistent with the verification results of Western blots and IHC. CONCLUSION: Using a PRM-based targeted proteomics technique, this study is the first to screen and quantitatively analyze the expression profile of HSPs in the villi and decidua of patients with EMA. The significant downregulation of HSP90AB1, HSPD1 and HSPA13 was found to have a potentially intimate association with the occurrence of EMA. The findings in our study may provide novel potential research targets related to HSPs for the pathogenesis, prevention and treatment of EMA.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Transcranial sonography has been used as a valid neuroimaging tool to diagnose Parkinson's disease (PD). This study aimed to develop a modified transcranial sonography (TCS) technique based on a deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) model to predict Parkinson's disease. METHODS: This retrospective diagnostic study was conducted using 1529 transcranial sonography images collected from 854 patients with PD and 775 normal controls admitted to the Second Affiliated Hospital of Soochow University (Suzhou, Jiangsu, China) between September 2019 and May 2022. The data set was divided into training cohorts (570 PD patients and 541 normal controls), and the validation set (184 PD patients and 234 normal controls). Using these datasets, we developed four different DCNN models (ResNet18, ResNet50, ResNet152, and DenseNet121). We then assessed their diagnostic performance, including the area under the receiver operating characteristic (AUROC) curve, specificity, sensitivity, positive predictive value (PPV), negative predictive value (NPV), and F1 score and compared with traditional diagnostic criteria. RESULTS: Among the 1529 TCS images, 570 PD patients and 541 normal controls from 4 of 6 sonographers of the TCS team were selected as the training cohort, and 184 PD patients and 234 normal controls from the other 2 sonographers were chosen as the validation cohort. There were no sex and age differences between PD patients and normal control subjects in the training and validation cohorts (P values > 0.05). All DCNN models achieved good performance in distinguishing PD patients from normal control subjects on the validation datasets, with diagnostic AUROCs and accuracy of 0.949 (95% CI 0.925, 0.965) and 86.60 for the RestNet18 model, 0.949 (95% CI 0.929, 0.971) and 87.56 for ResNet50, 0.945 (95% CI 0.931, 0.969) and 88.04 for ResNet152, 0.953 (95% CI 0.935, 0.971) and 87.80 for DenseNet121, respectively. On the other hand, the diagnostic accuracy of the traditional diagnostic method was 82.30. The accuracy of all DCNN models was higher than that of traditional diagnostic method. Moreover, the 5k-fold cross-validation results in train datasets showed that these DCNN models are robust. CONCLUSION: The developed transcranial sonography-based DCNN models performed better than traditional diagnostic criteria, thus improving the sonographer's accuracy in diagnosing PD.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore the relationship between patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) from subgroups of varying severity and substantia nigra (SN) hyperechogenicity as well as cerebral blood flow detected by transcranial sonography (TCS). The study also explored if there were differences in damage of the SN and in the cerebral blood flow between the bilateral sides. METHODS: Right-handed men diagnosed with OSA by polysomnography were recruited from August 2018 to August 2020. The included patients were divided into 3 subgroups (mild, moderate, and severe OSA), and all patients underwent TCS. RESULTS: Among the 157 study patients (30 with mild OSA, 25 moderate, and 102 severe), the overall prevalence of SN hyperechogenicity was 15% (23/157). The hyperechogenicity detection rates were 3% (4/157) in the right SN subgroup and 13% (20/157) in the left SN subgroup, which were significantly different. The left side always had reduced blood flow on TCS (P < 0.05). No correlation was observed between the severity of OSA and the detection rates of SN hyperechogenicity (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION: Patients with OSA showed a higher detection rate of SN hyperechogenicity on the left compared with the right side. The left middle cerebral arteries had reduced blood flow, which was consistent with the more severe damage of the left SN. No relationship was observed between the severity of OSA and the detection rate of SN hyperechogenicity or hemodynamic parameters.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Postoperative pneumonia (PP) is the most common primary infection after cardiac surgery, increasing the hospitalization expense and causing the consumption of healthcare resources. This study aimed to investigate the diagnostic value of procalcitonin (PCT) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) on early postoperative pneumonia after adult cardiac surgery. METHODS: In this prospective observational study, patients with pneumonia and age- and sex-matched cases in our center from October 10, 2020 to January 31, 2021 were included. Patients diagnosed with pneumonia in this study needed meet both clinical and microbiological diagnostic criteria. Blood samples were collected in all patients from postoperative day (POD) 1 to postoperative day 5 to detect PCT, IL-6, white blood cell count, and C-reactive protein. The diagnostic performance of different biomarkers was evaluated by the receiver operating characteristic curves and the area under the curves. RESULTS: Our study enrolled 272 patients, including 24 patients with postoperative pneumonia and 248 age- and sex-matched cases. From POD1 to POD5, the absolute value of PCT and PCT variations showed diagnostic significance for pneumonia (P < .05); the diagnostic value of the absolute value of IL-6 and IL-6 variations was not satisfying. White blood cell count showed no differences; C-reactive protein had no diagnostic value before POD4. Multivariable logistic regression showed that PCT variation and IL-6 variation from POD3 to POD1 were the strongest risk factors for postoperative pneumonia [OR:12.50, 95% CI: (3.40-45.5); OR:13.71, 95% CI: (1.11-168.47)]. According to the above results, we defined the PL Index. PL Index showed the best diagnostic value among those biomarkers in POD3 [AUC: 0.90, 95% CI: (0.79-0.95)]. Multivariable logistic regression showed PL Index POD3 has significant correlation with postoperative pneumonia [OR:1.23, 95% CI: (1.11-1.37), P = .041]. CONCLUSIONS: PCT variation and IL-6 were more accurate than C-reactive protein and white blood cell count to predict early postoperative pneumonia, but the diagnostic properties of PCT could not be observed during the first three postoperative days due to the inflammatory process. By combining the variations of PCT and IL-6, we defined the PL Index, which shows the best diagnostic ability on early postoperative pneumonia after adult cardiac surgery.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Parathyroidectomy (PTX) is a treatment for hyperparathyroidism (HPT) and has uncertain risks and benefits. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of PTX versus nonoperative treatment among nondiabetic hemodialysis patients. METHODS: A retrospective matched cohort study was performed. Each PTX patient was matched with one patient who had severe HPT but rejected PTX. The patients were matched by sex, birth date, date of first dialysis, nondiabetic status, and left ventricular ejection fraction. The serum markers, survival, main adverse cardiovascular and cerebrovascular event (MACCE) rates, and hospitalization were compared between the PTX patients and matched non-PTX patients. RESULTS: There were 1143 patients at our center in the Chinese National Renal Data System (CNRDS) between 2010 and 2020. Of these, 75 PTX patients were matched with 75 non-PTX patients. Rapid decreases in the mean intact parathyroid hormone, calcium and phosphorus concentrations, and a gradual increase in hemoglobin concentration were observed in the PTX group. The mortality was 2.9 per 100 patient-years in the PTX group and 10.9 per 100 patient-years in the non-PTX group (p < 0.001). Compared with non-PTX patients, PTX patients had an adjusted HR for death of 0.236 (95% CI 0.108-0.518). The cumulative MACCE rates were 6.7 per 100 patient-years in the PTX group and 15.2 per 100 patient-years in the non-PTX group (p < 0.001). The adjusted HR of the occurrence of first MACCE for PTX patients compared with non-PTX patients was 0.524 (95% CI 0.279-0.982). The cumulative hospitalization rates were 50.3 per 100 patient-years in the PTX group and 66.5 per 100 patient-years in the matched non-PTX group (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Compared with non-PTX patients, PTX was associated with an improvement in the biochemical measures and patient-level outcomes in nondiabetic hemodialysis patients with severe HPT.

RESUMO

China has implemented a strict isolation system in hospitals since the COVID-19 pandemic, that adversely affected the psychology of inpatients and their caregivers. Face-to-face, semi-structured interviews with 22 stroke inpatients from two municipal hospitals were conducted to explore the psychological, emotional and related support needs of stroke inpatients and their family caregivers under this environment. Results which showed that external support for stroke inpatients and their family caregivers was insufficient highlight the necessity for developing specific nursing interventions that meet the psychological and emotional needs of inpatients and the caregivers.

RESUMO

Ischemic stroke is a common disease worldwide with high mortality and disability rates. Nevertheless, pathogenesis of ischemic stroke is still vague, and finding novel therapeutic target is urgently necessary. TMEM59 (also known as dendritic cell-derived factor 1, DCF1), a type I transmembrane protein, contains a minimal 19-amino-acid peptide in its intracellular domain, and has been involved in neurological pathology. However, its biological impacts on ischemic stroke are still unknown. In this study, we provided new evidence that TMEM59 expression was significantly down-regulated upon ischemia/reperfusion (I/R). The effect of stroke insult on TMEM59 expression change was only detected in microglial cells by in vitro studies. We observed that TMEM59 knockout markedly accelerated cerebral I/R in mice induced by middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO), as evidenced by the elevated infarction volume, neurological deficit scores, brain water contents and neuronal death, further contributing to the abnormal behaviors for mice. We then found that microglial activation reflected by the enhanced expression of Iba-1 was dramatically potentiated by TMEM59 knockout in MCAO-treated mice. Pyroptosis was highly triggered in mice with cerebral I/R, while being further aggravated in mice with TMEM59 deletion, as proved by the considerably increased expression of NLRP3, ASC, cleaved Caspase-1, GSDMD-N, mature-IL-1ß and mature-IL-18. Additionally, TMEM59 knockout mice exhibited accelerated activation of NF-κB signaling pathway compared with the wild type group of mice after MCAO operation, indicating the anabatic neuroinflammation. The effects of TMEM59 suppression on ischemic stroke were confirmed in microglial cells with exposure to oxygen-glucose deprivation/reoxygenation (OGD/R). In contrast, the in vitro studies verified that improving TMEM59 expression effectively hindered pyroptosis and inflammation in microglial cells upon OGD/R treatment. Taken together, these findings illustrated protective effects of TMEM59 against ischemic stroke through restraining pyroptosis and inflammatory response.

RESUMO

Copolymerization is an effective approach to tailor the thermal and structural properties of liquid crystalline polymer materials, which is essential for various applications. In this work, two series of polynorbornene copolymers, A-r-B and A-r-C, with the biphenyl mesogenic side group at different substituent positions were synthesized via ring-opening metathesis polymerization in various compositions. The corresponding homopolymers A and C are liquid crystalline polymers, exhibiting an oblique columnar structure (Colob/p2) and lamellar structure, respectively, while homopolymer B is amorphous. The composition-dependent phase behaviors of copolymers were systematically studied with the combination of SAXS, GISAXS, AFM, DSC and POM techniques. With increasing molar content of A (xA), the self-organzied structure of copolymer A-r-B follows the sequence from amorphous to lamellar, undulated lamellar, and Colob/p2 structures, and that of A-r-C follows the sequence of lamellar, undulated lamellar, and Colob/p2 structures. Then, copolymers with undulated lamellar or Colob/p2 structures tend to enter lamellar phase first at higher temperature and then change to the isotropic state during heating. The composition-induced transition from lamellar to supramolecular columnar organization is somewhat reminiscent of block copolymers and other soft matter systems that can form ordered structures. Furthermore, the subsitituent number and position of rigid mesogenic units in the side chain can further modify the morphologies of self-organized phases.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Rigidity is one of the major manifestations of Parkinson's disease (PD), but no quantitative and objective imaging method has been developed to measure rigidity. Ultrasound shear wave elastography (SWE) can reflect the stiffness of tissue by providing a quantitative index. Thus, we conducted this study to evaluate the potential clinical value of SWE in assessing rigidity in PD. METHODS: A total of 63 subjects (44 patients with rigidity-dominant PD and 19 right-dominant-hand normal controls with matched age) were enrolled, and each underwent ultrasound SWE testing. The tests were conducted on the brachioradialis (BR) and biceps brachii (BB) on the more affected side in patients with PD and on the right side in normal controls. Differences in quantitative shear wave velocity (SWV) between patients with PD and normal controls were determined. The relationship of muscle SWV with joint rigidity, UPDRSIII, disease duration, sex, and age in patients with PD was analyzed. The intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) was used to evaluate the reliability of SWE in assessing muscle stiffness in patients with PD. RESULTS: The mean SWVs of the BB and BR were higher in the PD group (3.65±0.46 and 4.62±0.89 m/s, respectively) than in normal controls (2.79±0.37 and 3.26±0.40 m/s, respectively). Stiffness in BR and BB was correlated with the upper-limb joint rigidity, UPDRSIII, and disease duration but not with sex or age in the PD group. The intraobserver correlation coefficients (ICCs) for interobserver and intraobserver variations in measuring SWV were 0.85 (95% confidence interval 0.56-0.95) and 0.85 (95% confidence interval 0.58-0.95), respectively, for BR and 0.90 (95% confidence interval 0.73-0.97) and 0.86 (95% confidence interval 0.61-0.95), respectively, for BB. CONCLUSIONS: SWV is associated with joint rigidity and disease duration, indicating that SWE can be potentially used as an objective and quantitative tool for evaluating rigidity.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: CC chemokine ligand-18 (CCL-18) and CX3 chemokine ligand 1 (CX3CL1) are key factors of vascular and tissue injury in chronic respiratory diseases. Here, we investigated the value of CCL-18 and CX3CL1 in diagnosis and prognosis of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and chronic cor pulmonale (COPD&CCP). METHODS: First, we investigated the expression profile of CCL-18 and CX3CL1 in serum of COPD&CCP patients. Then the relationship of the level of CCL-18 and CX3CL1 with clinicopathological characteristics was analyzed. Subsequently, we evaluated the diagnostic accuracy of CCL-18 and CX3CL1 to discriminate COPD&CCP. The prognostic value and therapy outcome were also evaluated. RESULTS: Compared to healthy subjects, the level of CCL-18 (8.01 ± 2.01 ng/mL) and CX3CL1 (2,096.11 ± 306.09 ng/mL) was significantly increased in COPD&CCP patients (p < 0.05). The upregulation of CCL-18 and CX3CL1 was significantly correlated with clinicopathological characteristics including CRP, IL-6, FIB, NT-proBNP, FEV1, FEV1/FVC, PASP, LVEF, and T wave anomaly. The combination of CCL-18 and CX3CL1 showed high precision for discriminating COPD&CCP with high AUC values (0.828), sensitivity (66.1%), and specificity (92.5%). Furthermore, CCL-18 and CX3CL1 acted as independent factors which lead to poor clinical benefits and indicated poor prognosis of COPD&CCP patients. CONCLUSIONS: Taken together, our results indicated that CCL-18 and CX3CL1 could act as suitable biomarkers in prognosis and prognostic evaluation of COPD&CCP.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) was suggested to exert an effect on renal function. However, the specific mechanism was still unknown. We try to find the association among OSAS, adiponectin, and cystatin C and the effect of adiponectin on renal function in OSAS patients. METHODS: Seventeen healthy men and seventy-three men which only had OSAS were included in the end. Apnea-hypopnea index (AHI), oxygen desaturation index (ODI), the percentage of total sleep time spent with SpO2 < 90% (T90%), lowest O2 saturation (LaSO2), Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) score, serum adiponectin, and high-sensitive C-reactive protein (hsCRP) were detected in all subjects, and renal function was evaluated with creatinine, cystatin C, and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR). RESULTS: Demographic data, creatinine, and eGFR did not differ among the studied groups. Decreased serum adiponectin levels were associated with severe OSAS. OSAS patients had a higher hsCRP and cystatin C than those without OSAS. Serum adiponectin levels had a negative association with cystatin C. After adjusted for confounders, adiponectin, hsCRP, and ODI had a significant prediction on the cystatin C (ß = - 0.218, p = 0.011; ß = 0.226, p = 0.037; and ß = 0.231, p = 0.029). CONCLUSIONS: Decreased serum adiponectin was associated with increased cystatin C in male OSAS patients. These results suggest that serum adiponectin might be a regulatory factor for renal function in OSAS.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To find out the prevalence of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) genotypes in southern Zhejiang Province, China, and to study the genetic characteristics of G protein from subtype A of RSV. METHODS: The lower respiratory tract secretions of children under 5 years of age who were hospitalized for pneumonia and bronchiolitis in three hospitals in southern Zhejiang Province from July 2009 to June 2014 were collected. Direct immunofluorescence assay was used to detect RSV antigens from the collected secretions. A total of 200 samples were randomly selected from RSV-positive specimens in each prevailing year (from July of a specific year to June of the next year). RT-PCR was used to determine RSV subtypes, and the near-full length gene sequence of G protein from subtype A was amplified and sequenced to identify the genotype. RESULTS: A total of 25 449 samples of lower respiratory tract secretions were collected from 2009 to 2014, among which 6 416 (25.21%) samples were RSV-positive. Among the 1 000 RSV-positive specimens randomly sampled, 462 strains (46.2%) were subtype A, and 538 strains (53.8%) were subtype B. Subtype A accounted for 22.5%, 74.5%, 84.5%, 19.0%, and 30.5% of the total strains in each year from 2009 to 2014. A total of 25 RSV subtype A strains were randomly sampled and sent out for bidirectional sequencing in each year, which confirmed 52 positive subtype A strains. Four genotypes of subtype A strains were obtained from the above strains, including NA1 (39 strains), NA4 (1 strain), ON1 (10 strains), and GA2 (2 strains). NA1 was the dominant genotype between 2009 and 2012, and ON1 was the only genotype of subtype A during 2013-2014. The nucleotide homology and amino acid homology between the G protein of subtype A and the prototype strain A2 were 80.7%-89.3% and 74.4%-82.6%, respectively. The nucleotide homology and amino acid homology between the isolates of subtype A were 81.5%-100% and 80.2%-100%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: In southern Zhejiang Province from 2009 to 2014, there was a co-circulation of RSV subtypes A and B, as well as a co-circulation of several different genotypes of RSV subtype A, which had highly variable G protein genes.

RESUMO

The purpose of our study was to assess the alteration of the brainstem raphe (BR) on transcranial sonography (TCS) in depression patients with or without Parkinson's disease (PD) and to explore whether the different changes of BR could reflect an increasing impairment of raphe structures. TCS was performed in patients with PD, depression with PD, depression only, and controls. Using the red nucleus as an internal standard, the BR was rated semi-quantitatively from grades 1-4 with grades 1-3 determined as abnormal. The rate of abnormal BR (≤grade 3) was found to be only 10 % in patients with PD (4/40) and 5 % in control patients (2/40). The rate of abnormal raphe was significantly higher (p < 0.05) in patients with both depression and PD (85 %, 34/40) or patients with depression only (87.5 %, 35/40). TCS of the raphe in most patients with mild depression scored grade 3, while those with moderate depression scored grade 2-3, and those with severe depression scored grade 1. The different BR echogenicity score reflected an increasing impairment of raphe structures in depression patients with or without PD (p < 0.05). TCS provides a good tool for assessing depression, more severe depressive symptoms were associated with different aspects in TCS studies.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is severely affected by visceral adiposity (VA) that correlates to another disorder-metabolic syndrome (MetS). However, little is known concerning the relation of visceral adiposity index (VAI)-a novel and simple indicator of VA, with OSA and MetS. The objective of the study was to analyze the association of VAI with both disorders and applicability to identify OSA patients at risk of MetS. METHODS: Consecutive individuals undergoing polysomnography and biochemical tests were enrolled, and differences in all subjects grouped by apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) were analyzed. Spearman correlation was performed for assessing the relationship between VAI, OSA-related indices and metabolic score-total number of the positive diagnostic criteria of MetS. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was conducted to obtain a cut-off value of VAI for predicting incident MetS by sex. Then, the risk of MetS in OSA patients according to the cut-offs was attained by logistic regression. RESULTS: A total of 411 individuals were enrolled. Of whom, 361 subjects were diagnosed OSA (mild in 67 patients, moderate in 89 and severe in 205, respectively). A significant increasing trend based on AHI was observed in the variables of blood pressure, triglycerides, fasting glucose, incident MetS, metabolic score and VAI (all p < 0.05). Irrespective of gender, VAI was all significantly correlated with PSG characteristics as AHI, mean nocturnal oxygen saturation, the lowest oxygen saturation, metabolic score(all p < 0.05). A VAI of 2.282, 2.105, 2.511 (for all subjects, males and females, separately) were calculated to determine the occurrence of MetS. According to the cut-offs, OSA patients tended to suffer from greater risk in MetS (odds ratio [OR] = 10.237, p = 0.000; OR = 13.556, p = 0.000; OR = 21.458, p = 0.000). CONCLUSIONS: The present study suggested that VAI was significantly associated with MetS and OSA. As a simple and alternative approach obtained in everyday practice, it may offer a powerful tool to identify patients with OSA at risk of MetS.

RESUMO

Chinese scientists have made significant achievements in the field of animal genetics in 2015. Incomplete statistics show that among all the publications of 2015 involving nematode (Caenorhabditis elegans), fly (Drosophila melanogaster), zebrafish (Danio rerio), African clawed frog (Xenopus) or mice (Mus musculus), about 1/5 publications are from China. Many innovative studies were published in high-impact international academic journals by Chinese scientists, including the identification of a putative magnetic receptor MagR, the genetic basis for the regulation of wing polyphenism in the insect brown planthopper (Nilaparvata lugens), DNA N6-methyladenine (6mA) modification in the Drosophila genome, a novel molecular mechanism regarding the dendritic spine pruning and maturation in the mammals, the mechanism for the CREB coactivator CRTC2 in the regulation of hepatic lipid metabolism, the control of systemic inflammation by neurotransmitter dopamine, the role of Gasdermin protein family in triggering pyroptosis, a parvalbumin-positive excitatory visual pathway to trigger fear responses in mice, etc. Chinese scientists have also made important contributions in genome editing via TALEN or CRISPR/Cas system. According to incomplete statistics, more than 1/5 of the publications related to genome editing in 2015 are from China, where a variety of animals with different approaches were targeted, ranging from the worm to primates. Particularly, CRISPR/Cas9-mediated gene editing in human tripronuclear zygotes was successfully achieved for the first time. China has been one of the leading countries in genome sequencing in recent years, and Chinese scientists reported the sequence and annotation of the genomes of several important animal species in 2015, including goose (Anser cygnoides), Schlegel's Japanese Gecko (Gekko japonicus), grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idellus), large yellow croaker (Larimichthys crocea) and pig (Sus scrofa). They further analyzed the genome-wide genetic basis of the species-specific physiological and pathological characteristics as well as their adaptation to environmental conditions. In this review, we make a first attempt to summarize the research advances on animal genetics in China in 2015, with an emphasis on the achievements led by Chinese scientists and carried out in Chinese institutions. We will briefly discuss the significance of their research and contributions of Chinese scientists in animal genetics.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To compare the epidemiological and clinical features of lower respiratory tract infection (LRTI) caused by influenza virus A (IVA) and influenza virus B (IVB) in children. METHODS: The clinical data of 366 children with LRTI caused by influenza virus (IV), who were hospitalized in Yuying Children′s Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University between 2010 and 2014, were analyzed retrospectively, and there were 272 cases caused by IVA and 94 cases caused by IVB. RESULTS: IV was mainly prevalent from December to March of the next year, with the predominance of IVA. There were small peaks of IVA prevalence in July or September every other year, and IVB was prevalent from December to March of the next year every other year. The children with LRTI caused by IVA alone had a significantly higher white blood cell (WBC) count and significantly higher percentages of children with increased WBC, abnormal serum sodium, and abnormal serum potassium than those caused by IVB alone (P<0.05). However, there were no significant differences in age, sex, underlying diseases, clinical manifestations, and co-infection rate with bacteria or atypical pathogens between the two groups (P>0.05). The rate of co-infection with respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) was significantly higher in the IVB group than in the IVA group (P<0.01). CONCLUSIONS: IVA is prevalent in winter and spring every year and has small peaks in summer every other year, while IVB is prevalent in winter and spring every other year. Compared with IVB, IVA causes more cases of increased WBC and electrolyte disturbance. The children infected with IVB are more likely to be co-infected with RSV. The children with LRTI caused by IVA and IVB have similar clinical manifestations.
