BACKGROUND: Paramagnetic rim lesions (PRLs) are associated with chronic inflammation in multiple sclerosis (MS). 7-Tesla (7T) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can evaluate the integrity of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) in addition to the tissue myelination status and cell loss. PURPOSE: To use MRI metrics to investigate underlying physiology and clinical importance of PRLs. STUDY TYPE: Prospective. SUBJECTS: Thirty-six participants (mean-age 47, 23 females, 13 males) of mixed MS subtypes. FIELD STRENGTH/SEQUENCE: 7T, MP2RAGE, MULTI-ECHO 3D-GRE, FLAIR. ASSESSMENT: Lesion heterogeneity; longitudinal changes in lesion counts; comparison of T1, R2*, and χ; association between baseline lesion types and disease progression (2-3 annual MRI visits with additional years of annual clinical follow-up). STATISTICAL TESTS: Two-sample t-test, Wilcoxon Rank-Sum test, Pearson's chi-square test, two-group comparison with linear-mixed-effect model, mixed-effect ANOVA, logistic regression. P-values <0.05 were considered significant. RESULTS: A total of 58.3% of participants had at least one PRL at baseline. Higher male proportion in PRL+ group was found. Average change in PRL count was 0.20 (SD = 2.82) for PRLs and 0.00 (SD = 0.82) for mottled lesions. Mean and median pre-/post-contrast T1 were longer in PRL+ than in PRL-. No differences in mean χ were seen for lesions grouped by PRL (P = 0.310, pre-contrast; 0.086, post-contrast) or PRL/M presence (P = 0.234, pre-contrast; 0.163, post-contrast). Median χ were less negative in PRL+ and PRL/M+ than in PRL- and PRL/M-. Mean and median pre-/post-contrast R2* were slower in PRL+ compared to PRL-. Mean and median pre-/post-contrast R2* were slower in PRL/M+ than in PRL/M-. PRL presence at baseline was associated with confirmed EDSS Plus progression (OR 3.75 [1.22-7.59]) and PRL/M+ at baseline with confirmed EDSS Plus progression (OR 3.63 [1.14-7.43]). DATA CONCLUSION: Evidence of BBB breakdown in PRLs was not seen. Quantitative metrics confirmed prior results suggesting greater demyelination, cell loss, and possibly disruption of tissue anisotropy in PRLs. EVIDENCE LEVEL: 2 TECHNICAL EFFICACY: Stage 2.

This study focuses on analysing the heights of 10,953 Korean men aged 20 to 40 years who were measured during the Joseon dynasty, the Japanese colonialisation period, and the contemporary period, the latter including both North and South Korea. This study thus provides rare long-term statistical evidence on how biological living standards have developed over several centuries, encompassing Confucianism, colonialism, capitalism, and communism. Using error bar analysis of heights for each historical sample period, this study confirms that heights rose as economic performance improved. For instance, economically poorer North Koreans were expectedly shorter, by about 6 cm, than their peers living in the developed South. Similarly, premodern inhabitants of present-day South Korea, who produced a gross domestic product (GDP) per capita below the world average, were about 4 cm shorter than contemporary South Koreans, who have a mean income above the world average. Along similar lines, North Koreans, who have a GDP per capita akin to that of the premodern Joseon dynasty, have not improved much in height. On the contrary, mean heights of North Koreans were even slightly below (by about 2.4 cm) heights of Joseon dynasty Koreans. All in all, the heights follow a U-shaped pattern across time, wherein heights were lowest during the colonial era. Heights bounced back to Joseon dynasty levels during the interwar period, a time period where South Korea benefitted from international aid, only to rise again and surpass even premodern levels under South Korea's flourishing market economy.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Meningeal lymphatic vessels (MLVs) along the dural venous sinuses are suspected to be important in connecting the glymphatic and peripheral lymphatic system. Understanding the topography of MLVs may clarify the role of the glymphatic system in neurological diseases. The aim of this analysis was to use high resolution pre- and post-contrast FLAIR 7T MRI to identify and characterize the morphology of MLV in a cohort of healthy volunteers. MATERIALS AND METHODS: MRI examinations of seventeen healthy volunteers enrolled as controls in a larger 7T MRI study were reviewed. Pre- and post-contrast 3-D FLAIR subtractions and MP2RAGE sequences were spatially normalized and reviewed for signal intensity and enhancement patterns within putative MLVs along pre-determined dural and venous structures. Frequency of occurrence of MLVs at the above-described locations and patterns of their enhancement were analyzed. RESULTS: Putative MLVs are commonly located along the superior sagittal sinus (SSS) and cortical veins. A "fixed enhancement" signal pattern was more frequent at these locations (p<.05). The morphology of MLVs along the SSS qualitatively changes in an antero-posterior direction. Lack of signal was more frequent along the straight and transverse sinuses (p<.05). CONCLUSION: Putative MLVs in healthy individuals are concentrated along the SSS and cortical veins. FLAIR signal and enhancement characteristics suggest these structures may transport proteinaceous fluid. Pathways connecting MLVs to cervical lymph nodes however remain unclear.

Sodium dichloroisocyanurate-96% (NaDCC) is commonly used to treat drinking water, industrial water, and wastewater. However, exposure to NaDCC by inhalation can have toxic pulmonary effects in humans. In the present study, we evaluated the potential toxicity of NaDCC following a 90-day inhalation toxicity study in Sprague-Dawley/Crl:CD (SD) rats. The animals were exposed to 0.4, 2.0, or 10.0 mg/m3 NaDCC for 90 days. In addition, male and female rats from the 10.0 mg/m3 group were set up as the recovery group for 14 days. The bronchoalveolar lavage fluid showed a concentration-dependent increase in the total cell count, with a significant increase in neutrophils in both the sexes in the 10.0 mg/m3 group compared to the negative control group. In the 10.0 mg/m3 group, lung organ weight was significantly increased among the female rats. Histopathological examination showed eosinophilic droplets in the olfactory/respiratory epithelium, mucous cell hyperplasia, atrophy/degeneration of the tracheal branches, and wall thickening of the alveolar ducts in the nasal cavity of both sexes in the 10.0 mg/m3 group. The adverse effects of NaDCC exposure were observed to decrease during the 14-day recovery period in both sexes. Based on pathological observations, the "no observed adverse effect concentration (NOAEC)" of inhaled NaDCC was 2.0 mg/m3 for both sexes. These results are expected to provide a scientific basis for inhalation toxicity data of NaDCC.

The safety of urban transportation systems is considered a public health issue worldwide, and many researchers have contributed to improving it. Connected automated vehicles (CAVs) and cooperative intelligent transportation systems (C-ITSs) are considered solutions to ensure the safety of urban transportation systems using various sensors and communication devices. However, realizing a data flow framework, including data collection, data transmission, and data processing, in South Korea is challenging, as CAVs produce a massive amount of data every minute, which cannot be transmitted via existing communication networks. Thus, raw data must be sampled and transmitted to the server for further processing. The data acquired must be highly accurate to ensure the safety of the different agents in C-ITS. On the other hand, raw data must be reduced through sampling to ensure transmission using existing communication systems. Thus, in this study, C-ITS architecture and data flow are designed, including messages and protocols for the safety monitoring system of CAVs, and the optimal sampling interval determined for data transmission while considering the trade-off between communication efficiency and accuracy of the safety performance indicators. Three safety performance indicators were introduced: severe deceleration, lateral position variance, and inverse time to collision. A field test was conducted to collect data from various sensors installed in the CAV, determining the optimal sampling interval. In addition, the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test was conducted to ensure statistical consistency between the sampled and raw datasets. The effects of the sampling interval on message delay, data accuracy, and communication efficiency in terms of the data compression ratio were analyzed. Consequently, a sampling interval of 0.2 s is recommended for optimizing the system's overall efficiency.

BACKGROUND: Cortical demyelination is a relevant aspect of tissue damage in multiple sclerosis (MS). Microstructural changes may affect each layer in the cortex differently. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the sensitivity of quantitative magnetic resonance imaging (qMRI) measurements on cortical layers as clinically accessible biomarkers of grey matter (GM) pathology. METHODS: Forty-five participants with MS underwent 7 T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain. Magnetization prepared two rapid acquisition gradient echoes (MP2RAGE) was processed for T1-weighted images and a T1 map. Multi-echo gradient echo images were processed for quantitative susceptibility and R2* maps. Cortical GM volumes were segmented into four cortical layers, and relaxometry metrics were calculated within and between these layers. RESULTS: Significant correlations were found for disability scales and multi-layer metrics, for example, Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) and peak height (PH) in the subpial (T1: ρ = -0.372, p < 0.050) and inner (R2*: ρ = -0.359, p < 0.050) cortical layers. Multivariate regression showed interdependency between atrophy and cortical metrics in some instances, but an independent relationship between cortical metrics and disability in others. CONCLUSION: Cortical layer 7 T qMRI analyses reveal layer-specific relationships with disability in MS and allow emergence of clinically relevant associations that are hidden when analysing the full cortex.

BACKGROUND: Autopsy data suggest a causative link between meningeal inflammation and cortical lesions (CLs) in multiple sclerosis (MS). OBJECTIVE: To use leptomeningeal enhancement (LME) and CLs on 7-Tesla (7T) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to investigate associations between meningeal inflammation and cortical pathology. METHODS: Forty-one participants with MS underwent 7T MRI of the brain. CLs and foci of LME were quantified. RESULTS: All MS participants had CLs; 27 (65.8%) had >1 focus of LME. Except for hippocampal CL count (ρ = 0.32 with spread/fill-sulcal pattern LME, p = 0.042), no significant correlations were seen between LME and CLs. Mean cortical thickness correlated with the number of LME foci (ρ = -0.43, p = 0.005). Participants with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) showed no correlation with neocortical CLs, but significant correlations were seen between LME and hippocampal lesion count (ρ = 0.39, p = 0.030), normalized cortical gray matter (GM) volume (ρ = -0.49, p = 0.005), and mean cortical thickness (ρ = -0.59, p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: This study supports a relationship between LME and cortical GM atrophy but does not support an association of LME and neocortical CLs. This may indicate that meningeal inflammation is involved with neurodegenerative inflammatory processes, rather than focal lesion development.

This study examined height inequality as an indicator of income inequality during the colonial period (1910-1945) in Korea. Data were taken from a sample of 1796 male prisoners from a wide range of geographical locations and with varied socioeconomic backgrounds. Height inequality was measured using the coefficient of variation of height (CV) for each birth decade. The results indicated that height inequality, as measured by the CV, increased slightly from 3.32 to 3.35 for the birth decades 1890-99 and 1900-09, then jumped to 3.50 for the birth decade 1910-19. Considering the Kuznets curve, the presented results have socioeconomic implications for Japan's impact in Korea, at least during the early colonial period.

In this study, we investigated whether 4-hydroxycinnamic acid (HA) has a palliative effect on asthmatic inflammatory responses using a mouse model of ovalbumin (OVA)-induced allergic asthma. The mice were divided into five groups, each consisting of seven females (normal control phosphate-buffered saline); OVA (OVA sensitization/challenge); dexamethasone (DEX, OVA sensitization/challenge + dexamethasone 3 mg/kg); HA-10 and HA-20 OVA sensitization/challenge + HA 10 and 20 mg/kg, respectively). Mice treated with HA showed a reduction in airway hyperresponsiveness and in the number of inflammatory cells in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) compared with asthmatic control. HA treatment also reduced the levels of interleukin (IL)-5 and IL-13 in BALF and of OVA-specific immunoglobulin E in the serum compared with asthmatic control. HA treatment relieved airway inflammation and mucus overproduction caused by OVA exposure. Additionally, HA inhibited the increases in levels of nuclear factor kappa B, inducible nitric oxide synthase, and cyclooxygenase-2 that normally occur after OVA exposure. HA treatment also reduced the activity and protein level of matrix metalloproteinase-9. Taken together, HA effectively suppressed asthmatic airway inflammation and mucus production caused by OVA exposure. These findings indicate that HA has the potential to be used as a therapeutic agent for asthma.

Polyhexamethylene guanidine phosphate (PHMG-P) has effective antimicrobial activity against various microorganisms and has been widely used as a biocide in commercial products. However, its use as a humidifier disinfectant has provoked fatal idiopathic lung disease in South Korea, especially in pregnant or postpartum women and their young children. PHMG-P-related toxicological studies of reproduction and development in experimental animals have not been identified, and thus, we investigated the potential effects of early-stage oral exposure to PHMG-P by assessing its toxicological properties. PHMG-P was repeatedly administered by oral gavage at dose levels of 0, 13, 40 and 120 mg/kg to Sprague-Dawley rats during the pre-mating, mating, gestation and early lactation periods, and then general systemic and reproductive/developmental toxicities were investigated. At 120 mg/kg, PHMG-P-related toxicities including subdued behavior, thin appearance, decreased body weight, decreased food consumption and decreased F1 pup body weight were observed. Based on the results of this study, the no-observed-adverse-effect levels (NOAELs) of PHMG-P for both general systemic effects and development are considered to be 40 mg/kg/day.

Previous studies have reported that cigarette smoke and cigarette smoke extract (CSE) have negative effects on embryonic development. However, no studies have investigated the mechanism through which CSE affects the cellular signaling pathway leading to apoptosis and oxidative stress in embryonic cells, or how the two pathways are cross-linked. Thus, we studied the effects of CSE on apoptosis and oxidative stress in mouse embryonic stem cells (mESCs). Specifically, we measured changes in cell viability in response to CSEs (3R4F and two domestic cigarettes CSE 1 and 2) using a water soluble tetrazolium (WST) assay and a neutral red uptake (NRU) assay, which revealed that cell viability decreased in a concentration-dependent manner. Western blot analysis revealed that the expression of cyclin D1 and cyclin E1 was decreased and that of p21 and p27 was increased by CSE. Additionally, the number of terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase (TUNEL)-stained cells was increased by CSE, while the levels of Bax and Caspase-3 increased and Bcl-2 decreased. Moreover, a 2',7'-dichlorofluorescin diacetate (DCF-DA) assay and reactive oxygen species (ROS)-Glo H2 O2 assay confirmed that ROS were generated in response to CSE and that they were associated with up-regulated Keaf-1 and CHOP. Overall, the results revealed that cigarette smoke extract (CSE) inhibited cell proliferation by regulating cell cycle-related protein expression and increased oxidative stress by regulating the expression of Kelch-like ECH-associated protein 1 (Keap-1) and CCAAT/enhancer-binding protein homologous protein (CHOP), resulting in apoptosis in mESCs.

This work characterizes the effect of lipid and noise signals on muscle diffusion parameter estimation in several conventional and non-Gaussian models, the ultimate objectives being to characterize popular fat suppression approaches for human muscle diffusion studies, to provide simulations to inform experimental work and to report normative non-Gaussian parameter values. The models investigated in this work were the Gaussian monoexponential and intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM) models, and the non-Gaussian kurtosis and stretched exponential models. These were evaluated via simulations, and in vitro and in vivo experiments. Simulations were performed using literature input values, modeling fat contamination as an additive baseline to data, whereas phantom studies used a phantom containing aliphatic and olefinic fats and muscle-like gel. Human imaging was performed in the hamstring muscles of 10 volunteers. Diffusion-weighted imaging was applied with spectral attenuated inversion recovery (SPAIR), slice-select gradient reversal and water-specific excitation fat suppression, alone and in combination. Measurement bias (accuracy) and dispersion (precision) were evaluated, together with intra- and inter-scan repeatability. Simulations indicated that noise in magnitude images resulted in <6% bias in diffusion coefficients and non-Gaussian parameters (α, K), whereas baseline fitting minimized fat bias for all models, except IVIM. In vivo, popular SPAIR fat suppression proved inadequate for accurate parameter estimation, producing non-physiological parameter estimates without baseline fitting and large biases when it was used. Combining all three fat suppression techniques and fitting data with a baseline offset gave the best results of all the methods studied for both Gaussian diffusion and, overall, for non-Gaussian diffusion. It produced consistent parameter estimates for all models, except IVIM, and highlighted non-Gaussian behavior perpendicular to muscle fibers (α ~ 0.95, K ~ 3.1). These results show that effective fat suppression is crucial for accurate measurement of non-Gaussian diffusion parameters, and will be an essential component of quantitative studies of human muscle quality.

RESUMO

Cyclodipeptides (CDP) represent a diverse family of small, highly stable, cyclic peptides that are produced as secondary functional metabolites or side products of protein metabolism by bacteria, fungi, and animals. They are widespread in nature, and exhibit a broad variety of biological and pharmacological activities. CDP synthases (CDPSs) and non-ribosomal peptide synthetases (NRPSs) catalyze the biosynthesis of the CDP core structure, which is further modified by tailoring enzymes often associated with CDP biosynthetic gene clusters. In this review, we provide a comprehensive summary of CDP biosynthetic pathways and modifying enzymes. We also discuss the biological properties of some known CDPs and their possible applications in metabolic engineering.

INTRODUCTION: Cigarette smoke (CS) is associated with a broad range of diseases including lung cancer. Many researchers have suggested that cigarette smoke condensate (CSC) may be more toxic compared to cigarette smoke extract (CSE) because CSC contains the lipid-soluble faction of smoke while CSE contains the hydrophilic or gas phase. The aim of this research is to investigate the effects of CSC on the disruption of endoplasmic reticulum (ER)-Golgi homeostasis in normal lung epithelial cells. METHODS: CS was generated according to the ISO 3308 method. To ascertain the mechanistic effects of CSC on lung toxicity, normal lung epithelial cells of the cell line 16HBE14o- were treated with CSC (0.1mg/mL) for 48 hours. The toxic effects of CSC on ER-Golgi homeostasis and GOLPH3 expression were observed through diverse molecular tools including transmission electron microscope analysis. RESULTS: Our results demonstrated that CSC treatment increased reactive oxygen species generation in lung cells and led to the alteration of ER-Golgi homeostasis in conjunction with increased autophagy. In particular, GOLPH3, known as an oncogene and a marker protein for the trans-Golgi network, was upregulated in CSC-treated cells. GOLPH3 protein overexpression was also confirmed in the lungs of human lung cancer patients as well as NNK-treated mice. CONCLUSION: Our study revealed that CSC caused lung damage through the disruption of ER-Golgi homeostasis and autophagy induction. The expression level of the trans-Golgi marker protein GOLPH3 could serve as a reliable bio-indicator for CS-related lung cancer. IMPLICATIONS: CS is a harmful factor in the development of many diseases including cancer. In this research, we demonstrated that CSC treatment led to malfunction of the ER-Golgi network, with the disrupted ER and Golgi causing GOLPH3 overexpression and abnormal autophagy accumulation. In addition, although the value of GOLPH3 as a predictor remains to be fully elucidated, our data suggest that GOLPH3 levels may be a novel prognostic biomarker of tobacco related lung disease.

BACKGROUND: Over a few months in the spring of 2011, a cluster of patients with severe respiratory distress were admitted to our intensive care unit (ICU). Household clustering was also observed. Extensive laboratory investigations failed to detect an infectious cause. METHODS: Clinical, radiological and pathological investigations were conducted and the Korean Center for Disease Control performed epidemiological studies. RESULTS: The case series consisted of 17 patients. Their median age was 35 (range 28-49) years. Six were pregnant at presentation and four had given birth 2 weeks previously. All presented with cough and dyspnoea. In the majority of patients (14/17), multifocal areas of patchy consolidation were identified in the lower lung zones on the initial CT. As the condition progressed, the patchy consolidation disappeared (10/13) and diffuse centrilobular ground-glass opacity nodules started to predominate and persist. Pathological specimens (11/17) showed a bronchiolocentric, temporally homogenous, acute lung injury pattern with sparing of the subpleural and peripheral alveolar areas. Ten patients required mechanical ventilation, eight of whom subsequently received extracorporeal life support. Four of the latter underwent lung transplantation. Five of the six patients in the ICU who did not receive lung transplantation died. An epidemiological investigation revealed that all patients had used humidifier disinfectants in their homes. CONCLUSIONS: This case series report showed that lung injury and respiratory failure can occur as a result of inhaling humidifier disinfectants. This emphasises the need for more stringent safety regulations for potentially toxic inhalants that might be encountered in the home.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Leptomeningeal enhancement (LME) on post-contrast FLAIR is described as a potential biomarker of meningeal inflammation in multiple sclerosis (MS). Here we report an assessment of the impact of MRI field strength and acquisition timing on meningeal contrast enhancement (MCE). METHODS: This was a cross-sectional, observational study of 95 participants with MS and 17 healthy controls (HC) subjects. Each participant underwent an MRI of the brain on both a 7 Tesla (7T) and 3 Tesla (3T) MRI scanner. 7T protocols included a FLAIR image before, soon after (Gd+ Early 7T FLAIR), and 23 minutes after gadolinium (Gd+ Delayed 7T FLAIR). 3T protocol included FLAIR before and 21 minutes after gadolinium (Gd+ Delayed 3T FLAIR). RESULTS: LME was seen in 23.3% of participants with MS on Gd+ Delayed 3T FLAIR, 47.4% on Gd+ Early 7T FLAIR (p = 0.002) and 57.9% on Gd+ Delayed 7T FLAIR (p < 0.001 and p = 0.008, respectively). The count and volume of LME, leptomeningeal and paravascular enhancement (LMPE), and paravascular and dural enhancement (PDE) were all highest for Gd+ Delayed 7T FLAIR and lowest for Gd+ Delayed 3T FLAIR. Non-significant trends were seen for higher proportion, counts, and volumes for LME and PDE in MS compared to HCs. The rate of LMPE was different between MS and HCs on Gd+ Delayed 7T FLAIR (98.9% vs 82.4%, p = 0.003). MS participants with LME on Gd+ Delayed 7T FLAIR were older (47.6 (10.6) years) than those without (42.0 (9.7), p = 0.008). CONCLUSION: 7T MRI and a delay after contrast injection increased sensitivity for all forms of MCE. However, the lack of difference between groups for LME and its association with age calls into question its relevance as a biomarker of meningeal inflammation in MS.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Impaired hand function decreases quality of life after stroke. The purpose of this study was to pilot a novel 2-week upper extremity sensorimotor training program. This case series describes the training program and highlights outcome measures used for documenting behavioral change and neural reorganization. CASE DESCRIPTION: Behavioral/performance changes were identified via sensorimotor evaluation. Activity-induced neural reorganization was examined using sensory functional magnetic resonance imaging, diffusion tensor tractography, and brain volume measurement. Participant 1 was a 75-year-old right-handed man 1 year post-right hemisphere stroke, with severe sensory impairment across domains in his left hand; he reported limited left-hand/arm use. Participant 2 was a 63-year-old right-handed woman who had experienced a left hemisphere stroke 9 months earlier, resulting in mild sensory impairment across domains in her right hand, as well as mild motor deficit. INTERVENTION: Participants were trained 4 hours per day, 5 days per week for 2 weeks. Training tasks required sensory discrimination of temperature, weights, textures, shapes, and objects in the context of active exploration with the involved hand. Random multimodal feedback was used. OUTCOMES: Both participants had improved scores on the Wolf Motor Function Test after training. Participant 1 had no measurable change in sensory function, while participant 2 improved in touch perception, proprioception, and haptic performance. Sensory functional magnetic resonance imaging suggested neural reorganization in both participants; participant 1 had a small increase in brain volume, while superior thalamic radiation white matter connectivity was unchanged in either participant. DISCUSSION: Participating in sensorimotor training focused on sensory discrimination during manual manipulation was feasible for both participants. Future research to determine efficacy and identify optimal measures of sensory function and neural reorganization is recommended. Cadmium (Cd) is a nonessential toxic metal which is widely distributed in the environment. The general population is exposed to low levels of Cd and the kidney is the organ most sensitive to Cd toxicity. This study was performed to simultaneously evaluate Cd exposure, kidney function, and oxidative stress biomarkers in the general population. A total of 643 adults were interviewed to document demographic characteristics, lifestyles, past-medical history, and diet during the last 24 h. We estimated daily Cd intake based on the diet of study subjects who had not been exposed to Cd occupationally. Whole blood and urine samples were collected and analyzed to determine Cd concentrations and kidney function indices (ß2 -microglobulin [ß2-MG], N-acetyl-ß-D-glucosaminidase [NAG], metallothionein [MT]). The oxidative stress index (malondialdehyde [MDA]) was determined from the urine. The daily Cd intake from diet was established as 7.07 µg/day. The mean concentration of Cd measured in the blood was 1.22 µg/L and urine was 0.95 µg/g creatinine. The concentrations of Cd in blood and urine were higher in females than in males. The blood levels of Cd were affected by sex, age, and smoking, and urine Cd was influenced by sex, age, and blood Cd. The urine Cd was positively correlated with MT, NAG activity, and MDA in females, but with NAG only in males. The blood Cd was associated with MT in males. Increased NAG activity was observed when Cd in urine reached 1.0 µg Cd/g creatinine and was also affected by age, hypertension, and diabetes mellitus. Urinary MT only responded to Cd in urine or blood. In summary, exposure to Cd in the general population was influenced by various factors including sex, age, and smoking habits. Such exposure might eventually cause tubular damage in the kidneys through the oxidative stress mechanism, and females might be more susceptible than males to Cd exposure under the environment.

Ethylene is a gaseous hydrocarbon molecule known as a plant hormone that promotes fruit ripening and senescence. Efficiently controlling ethylene is a central key to maintaining the quality of agricultural products. The current study uncovered a synthetic method for 1-(2,2-dimethylpropyl)-cyclopropene (1-DCP) as a cyclopropene derivative to inhibit ethylene action in fruit ripening and senescence. We synthesized 1-DCP using α-diisobutylene through a two-step process, including allylic chlorination by hypochlorite and HCl, followed by α-elimination of the allylic chloride using a strong base, lithium diethylamide. GC-MS and NMR analyses demonstrated that 1-DCP was synthesized efficiently with 35% yield and 95% purity. When treated as an aqueous emulsion on plants, including persimmon and banana fruits, 1 mM 1-DCP showed effective inhibition of ethylene action by delaying the flesh softening and peel degreening, which are representative phenomena of fruit ripening and senescence induced by ethylene. Our data demonstrated that 1-DCP could be synthesized and used as a sprayable ethylene antagonist for pre- or post-harvest growth regulation in plants and fruits.
