RESUMO

In this paper we describe the synthesis and magnetic properties of a series of 3d-4f complexes of general formula [M4Ln(OH)2(chp)4(SALOH)5(H2O)(MeCN)(Solv)] (Solv = MeOH, MeCN, H2O; chp stands for deprotonated 6-chloro-2-hydroxypyridine (C5H3ClNO), SALOH stands for monodeprotonated 3,5-ditert-butylsalicylic acid (C15H21O3)) obtained by a solvent-free microwave assisted synthesis method. The Ni(ii) complexes (Ni4Gd, Solv = MeOH; Ni4Dy, Solv = MeCN) are not SMMs in the absence of an applied dc field. The replacement of Ni(ii) by Co(ii) (Co4La, Solv = MeOH; Co4Gd, Solv = H2O; Co4Gd-MeCN, Solv = MeCN; Co4Tb, Solv = MeOH; Co4Dy, Solv = H2O) results in improved SMM properties.

RESUMO

We report three instances of gallbladder stones in three children with ages between 9-13 years. Studies of their parents did not show any hematological or biochemical hereditary condition. Clinically they presented with fat intolerance, and the third patient was erroneously diagnosed as acute appendicitis. The main bile duct was normal in all cases. Calculi were mostly made of cholesterol with scarce bilirubin. Follow-up in all patients has been uneventful.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To find the prevalence of depression and the level of anxiety in a group of patients with diabetes mellitus type II (DM); to compare the presence of psychiatric pathology with different variables and contrast the diabetic group's results with those of a group of non-diabetic patients. DESIGN: A comparative crossover study. SETTING: The Ronda Prim Health Centre, Mataró. PATIENTS AND OTHER PARTICIPANTS: The diabetics controlled of 4 of the 6 Basic Care Units (BCU) of our Centre. The comparison group consisted of 85 patients who attended the Centre of their own accord, matched for gender, age and BCU. The two groups did not differ as to socio-economic level, marital status and job. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: Two self-applicable tests were given to all the patients: the Stai test to measure anxiety and the Beck one to determine depression. 27% of the diabetic patients had depression, as against 47% of those in the comparison group (p = 0.001). For the diabetic group, depression and anxiety level was found to have no relationship with the length of the DM's development, its treatment and chronic complications, the performance of self-analysis techniques and glycaemic control. CONCLUSIONS: The group of diabetics studied displayed a prevalence of psychiatric pathology very much lower than the control group. No statistically significant relationship was found between depression and anxiety levels, and different variables associated with DM.

RESUMO

The latest version of the classical molecular interaction potential (CMIP) has the ability to predict the position of crystallographic waters in several proteins with great accuracy. This article analyzes the ability of the CMIP functional to improve the setup procedure of the molecular system in molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of proteins. To this end, the CMIP strategy is used to include both water molecules and counterions in different protein systems. The structural details of the configurations sampled from trajectories obtained using the CMIP setup procedure are compared with those obtained from trajectories derived from a standard equilibration process. The results show that standard MD simulations can lead to artifactual results, which are avoided using the CMIP setup procedure. Because the CMIP is easy to implement at a low computational cost, it can be very useful in obtaining reliable MD trajectories.
