RESUMO

The goals of object detection are to accurately detect and locate objects of various sizes in digital images. Multi-scale processing technology can improve the detection accuracy of the detector. Feature pyramid networks (FPNs) have been proven to be effective in extracting multi-scaled features. However, most existing object detection methods recognize objects in isolation, without considering contextual information between objects. Moreover, for the sake of computational efficiency, a significant reduction in the channel dimension may lead to the loss of semantic information. This study explores the utilization of attention mechanisms to augment the representational power and efficiency of features, ultimately improving the accuracy and efficiency of object detection. The study proposed a novel hierarchical attention feature pyramid network (HA-FPN), which comprises two key components: transformer feature pyramid networks (TFPNs) and channel attention modules (CAMs). In TFPNs, multi-scaled convolutional features are embedded as tokens and self-attention is applied to across both the intra- and inter-scales to capture contextual information between the tokens. CAMs are employed to select the channels with rich channel information to alleviate massive channel information losses. By introducing contextual information and attention mechanisms, the HA-FPN significantly improves the accuracy of bounding box detection, leading to more precise identification and localization of target objects. Extensive experiments conducted on the challenging MS COCO dataset demonstrate that the proposed HA-FPN outperforms existing multi-object detection models, while incurring minimal computational overhead.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Since the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbreak started in late 2019, the older population has accounted for a large proportion of severe and fatal cases. This study investigated the mental state and attitudes of older Chinese adults during this epidemic. DESIGN: Cross-sectional online surveys on a convenience sample of China's general population at two different time points. Online surveys were disseminated through popular Chinese social media applications. Adults 18 or older living in China during the initial (N = 1148) and second stages (N = 470) were included in the survey. The Worries, Strategies, and Confidence Questionnaire was created to assess worries and awareness of the disease. RESULTS: Combined responses (N = 1618), 76.1% were female and about 7.0% were 60 years or above. In the first wave, older adults were found less likely to worry about being infected by COVID-19 (p < 0.05) and reported less attention paid to protective measures (p = 0.004) than young adults. However, as the disease evolved, older participants in the second wave were more worried than young adults (p = 0.027) and older adults in the first wave (p = 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: During the epidemic of COVID-19, watchfulness of the epidemic among older Chinese adults fluctuated over time. Initially, they were slow to respond proactively, but their worries gradually increased. Health care and social service professionals need to address the vulnerabilities of older adults to this public health crisis.

RESUMO

Emission factors of carbon monoxide (CO), particulate matter (PM2.5), organic carbon (OC), and elemental carbon (EC), as well as combustion efficiency and particle optical properties were measured during 37 uncontrolled cooking tests of residential stoves in Yunnan Province, China. Fuel mixtures included coal, woody biomass, and agricultural waste. Compared to previously published emission measurements of similar stoves, these measurements have higher CO and PM2.5 emission factors. Real-time data show two distinct burn phases: a devolatilization phase after fuel addition with high PM2.5 emissions and a solid-fuel combustion phase with low PM2.5 emissions. The average emission factors depend on the relative contributions of these phases, which are affected by the services provided by the stoves. Differences in stove and fuel characteristics that are not represented in emission inventories affect the variability of emission factors much more than do the type of solid fuel or stove. In developing inventories with highly variable sources such as residential solid-fuel combustion, we suggest that (1) all fuels should be accounted for, not just the primary fuel; (2) the household service provided should be emphasized rather than specific combinations of solid fuels and devices; and (3) the devolatilization phase should be explicitly measured and represented.

RESUMO

Although many protein fusion tags have been developed for recombinant protein production to improve protein yields or facilitate purification, determining the expression and purification of the fusion protein still remain to be a time-consuming and laborious procedure. In this work, we designed a histidine-rich elastin-like polypeptide (HRELP) fusion tag and found that it could be efficiently expressed in E. coli cells and specifically stained with Pauly's reagent in a couple of minutes post SDS-PAGE analysis. Moreover, in Pauly's reagent-stained polyacrylamide gels, only the bands of HRELP fusion proteins were yellow and could be clearly visualized with little background. Furthermore, both HRELPs and HRELP20-BMP2 fusion protein could be purified by a method of pH shift-mediated inverse transition cycling (ITC). In our opinion, the HRELP established in this study may be considered as a multifunctional protein tag which could make its fusion proteins being quickly detected by Pauly staining and simply purified by pH-triggered ITC in addition to having the potential to sustained release its fusion proteins.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship of erectile dysfunction (ED) with psychological factors in male patients with infertility. METHODS: We conducted a questionnaire investigation among 252 male patients with infertility, which involved the general condition, results of semen routine examination, sexual life, and scores in IIEF-5, self-reported 9-item patient health questionnaire (PHQ-9) and 7-item generalized anxiety disorder scale (GAD-7). We analyzed the prevalence of ED, depression, and anxiety and their correlations among the patients in comparison with 100 fertile male controls. RESULTS: In 245 of the infertility patients, the most common symptoms of depression and anxiety were "feeling tired or no vitality" and "easily getting worried or impatient", 20.4% of them with depression disorder and 42.9% with anxiety disorder. The PHQ-9 and GAD-7 scores were significantly higher in the infertile males than in the normal fertile controls (P <0.05), and so was the incidence of ED (28.6% vs 12.4%, P <0.05), while the IIEF-5 scores were markedly lower in the former than in the latter group (P <0.01), and so were sex frequency and sexual satisfaction (P <0.05). The PHQ-9 and GAD-7 scores were remarkably higher in the infertility patients with ED than in those without (P <0.01). Logistic regression analysis showed that the level of libido and results of semen routine examination were the risk factors for depression disorder, while age, education level, disease course and experience of assisted reproduction were those for anxiety disorder. CONCLUSIONS: Male infertility patients have a poorer mental health and a higher incidence of ED than normal fertile men, and there is some interaction between psychological status and ED prevalence.

RESUMO

In this pilot study, we aimed to examine whether iPad-assisted cognitive training could be beneficial in ameliorating some of the cognitive impairment that accompany schizophrenia. Totally, 20 first-episode schizophrenia patients were randomly assigned to an experiment group (with cognitive training) or to a control group (without cognitive training). The N-back task was assessed at baseline and after intervention, to see what effects iPad-assisted training might have (week 4). The experimental group exhibited significant improvement in the accuracy rate at 2-back, and reaction time at 0, 1 and 2-back tasks. These findings suggest that iPad- or other technically-assisted cognitive training may potentially be a valid strategy for pursuing cognitive rehabilitation among those with schizophrenia.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Erectile dysfunction is a common male disease, the constant pace of life, increasing pressure on life, and changes in diet, living environment, lifestyle, etc., lead to an increase in the number of patients with erectile dysfunction (ED). Acupuncture has been widely used in clinical trials of ED in recent years. There are many clinical trials that confirm that acupuncture can improve male erectile function. This study used a network meta-analysis (NMA) to compare the effectiveness and safety of different forms of acupuncture on ED. METHODS: We will search for PubMed, Cochrane Library, AMED, EMBASE, WorldSciNet; Nature, Science online and China Journal Full-text Database (China National Knowledge Infrastructure), China Biomedical Literature CD-ROM Database (CBM), and related randomized controlled trials (RCTs) included in the China Resources Database. The time is limited from the construction of the library to December 2018. The quality of the included RCTs will be evaluated with the risk of bias tool and evidence will be evaluated by Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation. STATA 13.0 and WinBUGS 1.4.3 through the GeMTC package will be used to perform an NMA to synthesize direct and indirect evidence.

RESUMO

The extracellular matrix has drawn considerable interest in tissue engineering not only acts as a bioactive three-dimensional scaffold but also regulates cell behaviors through providing biochemical signals. Extracellular matrix-based biomaterials, mainly derived from xenogeneic tissues, have shown positive outcomes in promoting cutaneous wound healing. However, such extracellular matrices only contain low doses of growth factors, which limit their therapeutic efficiency. Recent reports demonstrated that cell sheets made from mesenchymal stem cell can accelerate wound repair through enhanced re-epithelialization and angiogenesis, but its clinical translation is hindered by several limitations, such as the risk of aberrant immune responses and cost implications. In this study, acellular extracellular matrices were prepared from CuCl2-conditioned mesenchymal stem cell sheets and their in vivo wound healing properties were evaluated in a mouse model of full-thickness skin defect. We found that extracellular matrices derived from CuCl2-conditioned mesenchymal stem cell sheets have a compact surface with thick solid-like cross-sectional structure. Moreover, CuCl2 dramatically enriched the extracellular matrices with collagen I, collagen III, transforming growth factor-ß1, vascular endothelial growth factor, and basic fibroblast growth factor via hypoxia-inducible factor-1α activation. And as a consequence, the resulting extracellular matrices showed markedly improved in vivo wound healing potency through early adipocyte mobilization, enhanced granulation tissues formation, rapid re-epithelialization, and augmented angiogenesis. Therefore, we consider that the extracellular matrix derived from CuCl2-conditioned mesenchymal stem cell sheets has the potential for clinical translation and may lead to a novel strategy for wound management.

RESUMO

MSC treatment can promote cutaneous wound repair through multiple mechanisms, and paracrine mediators secreted by MSC are responsible for most of its therapeutic benefits. Recently, MSC sheet composed of live MSCs and their secreted ECMs was reported to promote wound healing; however, whether its ECM alone could accelerate wound closure remained unknown. In this study, Nc-ECM and Cc-ECM were prepared from nonconditioned and CoCl2-conditioned MSC sheets, respectively, and their wound healing properties were evaluated in a mouse model of full-thickness skin defect. Our results showed that Nc-ECM can significantly promote wound repair through early adipocyte recruitment, rapid reepithelialization, enhanced granulation tissue growth, and augmented angiogenesis. Moreover, conditioning of MSC sheet with CoCl2 dramatically enriched its ECM with collagen I, collagen III, TGF-ß1, VEGF, and bFGF via activation of HIF-1α and hence remarkably improved its ECM's in vivo wound healing potency. All the Cc-ECM-treated wounds completely healed on day 7, while Nc-ECM-treated wounds healed about 85.0% ± 8.6%, and no-treatment wounds only healed 69.8% ± 9.6% (p < 0.05). Therefore, we believe that such growth factor-reinforced ECM fabricated from chemically hypoxic MSC sheet has the potential for clinical translation and will lead to a MSC-derived, cost-effective, bankable biomaterial for wound management.
