RESUMO

The striped cucumber beetle, Acalymma vittatum (F.) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), is a key pest of cucurbit crops throughout its range. A novel precision band applicator was designed to inject a solid stream of imidacloprid solution in-furrow directly over the seed during planting to reduce beetle leaf feeding on pumpkin, zucchini, and cucumber crops. In 2004 and 2005, bioassays at the cotyledon through fifth leaf were conducted on striped cucumber beetles using seedling leaf tissue grown from seeds treated using both continuous and precision banded in-furrow imidacloprid solution applications. In 2004, 80% of bioassay trials had treatments with beetle mortality significantly higher than the check, whereas 70% of the bioassay trials showed no significant difference in mortality between continuous in-furrow and precision banded treatments. In 2005, 79% of bioassay trials had treatments with beetle mortality significantly higher than the check, whereas 100% of the bioassays showed no significant difference in beetle mortality between continuous in-furrow and precision banded treatments at the same insecticide rate. The environmental savings of precision banded treatments compared with continuous in-furrow treatment reduced imidacloprid up to 84.5% on a per hectare basis for all cucurbits tested in 2004 and 2005, translating into an economic savings up to $215/ha. In separate bioassay trials conducted in 2005 on pumpkin, where insecticide band length and injection volume were manipulated independently, several treatments had significantly higher beetle mortality than the check. There was a trend of increased beetle mortality in treatments using shorter band lengths combined with higher insecticide solution volumes.

RESUMO

The hemlock woolly adelgid, Adelges tsugae Annand, is an invasive pest of eastern (Tsuga canadensis (L.) Carrière) and Carolina hemlock (Tsuga caroliniana Engelmann) forests in the eastern United States. Scymnus (Pullus) coniferarum Crotch (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) is a lady beetle that preys on A. tsugae in the western United States, where A. tsugae infestations on western hemlocks are not lethal. It is thought that S. coniferarum could be an important predator that helps keep A. tsugae populations from reaching damaging levels in this region. This study assesses the potential of this predator as a biological control agent for A. tsugae in the eastern United States. S. coniferarum predation, reproductive potential, and survival were evaluated in field-cages on adelgid-infested T. canadensis at two sites in southwestern Virginia. Sampling was conducted between December 2012 and June 2014 to evaluate the impact of S. coniferarum on both generations of A. tsuage (sistens and progrediens). Adult S. coniferarum fed on both generations and all life stages of A. tsugae during both field trials at rates comparable to other adelgid-specific predators. Evidence of S. coniferarum oviposition was minimal, and may be attributed to low temperatures and prey availability. S. coniferarum mortality was greatest when exposed to winter temperatures at the higher elevation site in 2013, and least throughout the 2014 spring sample period. S. coniferarum demonstrated a high predation rate on A. tsugae and survived for extended periods of time at sites in southwest Virginia, indicating that this species could be an effective predator of hemlock woolly adelgid in similar climates.

RESUMO

This article describes a 1988 pilot study in a family medicine residency program of the use of a sociomatrix to assess small-group teaching. A multidisciplinary team developed a sociomatrix coding sheet, which was used by a family physician-psychiatrist to classify behaviors seen on videotaped small-group teaching sessions, which were held at the conclusion of patient care activities. Although the sociomatrix appears to have the potential to relate specific leader behaviors to residents' feedback regarding subjective learning outcomes, the number of observations was too small to permit clear conclusions regarding optimal teaching behaviors and styles.

RESUMO

The fluorescent retrograde tracer, rhodamine dextran amine, was unilaterally injected into the cochlear duct of anesthetized chicks. Retrogradely labeled cells were found bilaterally in the brainstem ventromedial to the superior olivary nucleus and to the ventral facial nucleus, and in the caudal pontine reticular formation between the dorsal facial nucleus and the abducens nerve root. Tissue sections containing retrogradely labeled cells were incubated in an antiserum to calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) and a fluorescently labeled secondary antiserum. No double-labeled neurons were found, suggesting that chick cochlear efferent neurons do not contain CGRP or that levels of CGRP in these cells may be too low to be detected immunohistochemically.

RESUMO

Questionnaires were sent to 200 Oregon family physicians to assess their attitudes and educational needs concerning human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) related conditions. Completed questionnaires were returned by 160 (80%). Fifty-one percent had already managed patients with HIV disease or AIDS. Seventy-three percent indicated that HIV would have an effect on their future practice. Physicians were least comfortable in management areas concerning direct medical skills and most comfortable with counseling and behavioral science issues. Physicians were more likely to participate in "hotline consults," one-day regional workshops, and written protocols than in more high-tech, time-consuming methods of continuing medical education.

RESUMO

The objective of this study was to document the association between the thermal environment in the barn and Salmonella shedding in finishing pigs. For this purpose, individual fecal samples from 900 finishing pigs (8 collections per pig) were repeatedly collected from 18 cohorts (50 pigs per cohort) on 3 sites of a multi-site farrow-to-finish production system in a longitudinal study. Pen temperature and humidity were measured every 2 min during the study period. The thermal parameters of interest were: hourly average temperature, minimum and maximum temperature, hourly temperature variation, temperature humidity index (THI) and cumulative number of hours/degree above and below the thermal neutral zone at the pen level prior to fecal sampling for 6 time periods (12h, 24h, 48 h, 72 h, 1 week and 1 month). Additional potential risk factors at the individual (e.g., sex, health events), cohort (e.g., mortality, morbidity, Salmonella status of the nursery) and pen level (e.g., type of pen) were also evaluated. Multilevel logistic models using generalized linear models, with random intercepts at pig, pen and cohort levels to account for clustering (individual samples nested within pigs, pigs nested within pens, pens within cohorts) were constructed. Site (A, B, C) was considered as a fixed effect in order to control for clustering within site. The outcome variable was Salmonella fecal status of the individual sample. Cold exposure (temperatures below the thermal neutral zone) and exposure to a THI>72 were both positively associated with risk Salmonella shedding. Nursery Salmonella status was positively associated with Salmonella shedding and pig age was negatively associated with Salmonella shedding. In the multilevel intercept-only model the largest proportion of model variance was associated with the individual fecal sample (44.8%) followed by cohort (24.5%), pen (20.5%) and pig (10.2%). The present study allowed the investigation of the association of time-variant thermal factors and Salmonella shedding. Interventions that target the thermal environment may have an effect on reducing Salmonella shedding in swine and also improve pig well-being and production efficiency. Alternatively, thermal parameters may be used to identify groups of pigs at high risk for Salmonella shedding. Future studies should be performed to investigate the cost-efficacy of interventions to improve the thermal environment of swine.

RESUMO

We report a patient with tuberculosis treated with a five-drug regimen who experienced severe acid-base and electrolyte abnormalities including hypomagnesemia, hypokalemia, hypocalcemia, and a hypochloremic metabolic alkalosis. These disturbances are believed to be due to treatment with capreomycin, which produced renal magnesium wasting and possible tubular damage. Therefore, we recommend frequent determinations of serum electrolytes, magnesium, and calcium in patients treated with capreomycin.

RESUMO

A study was conducted on three adult medicine units in a 300-bed teaching hospital to (1) evaluate the effect of a slide-tape program in increasing patients' short-term knowledge of theophylline treatment and (2) evaluate the effect on this knowledge of a pharmacist's presence during the educational session. Thirty-four patients were assigned randomly to one of two treatment groups. Patients in both groups viewed a 10-minute program, Group 1 patients with the pharmacist present and Group 2 patients alone. Patient knowledge was measured before and after the educational program with identical 20-item objective tests. The posttest scores of both groups were significantly higher than their pretest scores (p less than 0.05). No significant difference was found in the mean improvement in scores between the two groups. Pharmacist-designed audiovisual patient education programs can be used effectively in the pharmacist's absence.

RESUMO

A study was conducted to: (1) evaluate the effect of a slide-tape program on patients' short-term and long-term knowledge about their bronchodilator medications; and (2) determine it any differences exist in learning or retention patterns for different content areas of drug information. The knowledge of 30 patients was measured using a randomized sequence of three comparable 15-question tests. The first test was given before the slide-tape program was presented, the second test within 24 hours, and the last test one to six months (mean = 2.8 months) later. Scores attained on the first posttest were significantly higher (p less than 0.001) than pretest scores. Learning differences among drug-information-content areas were not evidenced on the first posttest. No significant difference was demonstrated between scores on pretest and last posttest (p = 0.100). However, retention patterns among content areas were found to differ significantly (p less than 0.05). Carefully designed audiovisual programs can impart drug information to patients. Medication counseling should be repeated at appropriate opportunities because patients lose drug knowledge over time.
