BACKGROUND: The term Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) describes a range of neurodevelopmental conditions, the direct result of prenatal alcohol exposure. FASD encompasses a range of behavioural, cognitive and sleep patterns that are sometimes indiscernible from other neurodevelopmental conditions, one in particular being Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). This study aimed to provide a comparison of behavioural, cognitive, affect-related and sleep profiles in children aged between 6 and 15 years with diagnoses of FASD or ASD, in contrast to typically developing (TD) children. METHODS: We compared 29 children with FASD, 21 children with ASD and 45 typically developing (TD) children on parental-reported questionnaires measuring behaviour and executive functioning: the Child Behaviour Checklist (CBCL), the Spence Children's Anxiety Scale (SCAS) and the Behaviour Rating Inventory for Executive Function (BRIEF). Additionally, parents completed the Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire (CSHQ), and children wore actigraphy watches while sleeping to objectively capture their sleep habits. The three groups were compared using ANCOVA, controlling for age effects. RESULTS: Children with FASD scored significantly higher than the other two groups on the CBCL subscales of attention problems, somatic complaints, social problems, delinquency, and aggressive behaviour, as well as the panic subscale of the SCAS. Children with FASD also scored higher on all measures of the BRIEF than the ASD and TD groups, indicating greater problems with working memory and more difficulty shifting between tasks, planning, organising, inhibiting their behaviour and exercising emotional control. Nocturnal sleep duration in children with FASD was reported as one hour less than TD children and 46 minutes less than children with ASD per night. CONCLUSIONS: The findings in this study highlight several syndrome specific features (shorter sleep duration, executive functioning difficulties, and higher levels of social and behavioural problems and panic) that potentially contribute to the unique phenotype of FASD. Whilst this research highlights the need for further work in this area, initial clinical screening for FASD should take such data on discernible characteristics, particularly the syndrome specificity of the BRIEF, into consideration.

Background: Sleep problems are commonly reported in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and are also a familiar characteristic of typical development (TD). We sought to elucidate the relationship between sleep, ADHD trait behaviors, and cognitive inattention, and how it manifests between ADHD and TD children. Participants: Eighteen children diagnosed with ADHD and 20 age-matched TD controls aged 5 to 11 years old participated in the study. Methods: Sleep profiles were assessed using Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire and actigraphy measures. Behavioral functioning was examined using Conners' Parent Report Scale and attention using the computerized Conners' Continuous Performance Task. Results: We found evidence of (a) poorer sleep quality in the ADHD group, despite no difference in actual sleep time, (b) poor sleep quality in TD children predicting increased ADHD-trait behaviors, despite no association with attention, and (c) a consistent trend for poor sleep quality predicting reduced attentional control in ADHD children, despite no association with behavior. Conclusions: Poor sleep quality affects developmental subgroups in different ways. For ADHD children, poor sleep worsens their predisposed attentional deficit, while for TD children it mimics ADHD behaviors. These findings have important implications for the debate on overdiagnosis of childhood ADHD, and the use of sleep-based interventions. Above all, they highlight the importance of promoting good sleep hygiene in all children.

Sleep plays an active role in memory consolidation. Because children with Down syndrome (DS) and Williams syndrome (WS) experience significant problems with sleep and also with learning, we predicted that sleep-dependent memory consolidation would be impaired in these children when compared to typically developing (TD) children. This is the first study to provide a cross-syndrome comparison of sleep-dependent learning in school-aged children. Children with DS (n = 20) and WS (n = 22) and TD children (n = 33) were trained on the novel Animal Names task where they were taught pseudo-words as the personal names of ten farm and domestic animals, e.g. Basco the cat, with the aid of animal picture flashcards. They were retested following counterbalanced retention intervals of wake and sleep. Overall, TD children remembered significantly more words than both the DS and WS groups. In addition, their performance improved following night-time sleep, whereas performance over the wake retention interval remained stable, indicating an active role of sleep for memory consolidation. Task performance of children with DS did not significantly change following wake or sleep periods. However, children with DS who were initially trained in the morning continued to improve on the task at the following retests, so that performance on the final test was greater for children who had initially trained in the morning than those who trained in the evening. Children with WS improved on the task between training and the first retest, regardless of whether sleep or wake occurred during the retention interval. This suggests time-dependent rather than sleep-dependent learning in children with WS, or tiredness at the end of the first session and better performance once refreshed at the start of the second session, irrespective of the time of day. Contrary to expectations, sleep-dependent learning was not related to baseline level of performance. The findings have significant implications for educational strategies, and suggest that children with DS should be taught more important or difficult information in the morning when they are better able to learn, whilst children with WS should be allowed a time delay between learning phases to allow for time-dependent memory consolidation, and frequent breaks from learning so that they are refreshed and able to perform at their best.

In typically developing (TD) children, sleep problems have been associated with day-time attentional difficulties. Children with developmental disabilities often suffer with sleep and attention problems, yet their relationship is poorly understood. The present study investigated this association in school-aged children with Down syndrome (DS) and Williams syndrome (WS). Actigraphy and pulse oximetry assessed sleep and sleep-disordered breathing respectively, and attention was tested using a novel visual Continuous Performance Task (CPT).Attentional deficits were evident in both disorder groups. In the TD group, higher scores on the CPT were related to better sleep quality, higher oxyhemoglobin saturation (SpO2), and fewer desaturation events. Sleep quality, duration, and SpO2 variables were not related to CPT performance for children with DS and WS.

Sleep is an active state that plays an important role in the consolidation of memory. It has been found to enhance explicit memories in both adults and children. However, in contrast to adults, children do not always show a sleep-related improvement in implicit learning. The majority of research on sleep-dependent memory consolidation focuses on adults; hence, the current study examined sleep-related effects on two tasks in children. Thirty-three typically developing children aged 6-12 years took part in the study. Actigraphy was used to monitor sleep. Sleep-dependent memory consolidation was assessed using a novel non-word learning task and the Tower of Hanoi cognitive puzzle, which involves discovering an underlying rule to aid completion. Children were trained on the two tasks and retested following approximately equal retention intervals of both wake and sleep. After sleep, children showed significant improvements in performance of 14% on the non-word learning task and 25% on the Tower of Hanoi task, but no significant change in score following the wake retention interval. Improved performance on the Tower of Hanoi may have been due to children consolidating explicit aspects of the task, for example rule-learning or memory of previous sequences; thus, we propose that sleep is necessary for consolidation of explicit memory in children. Sleep quality and duration were not related to children's task performance. If such experimental sleep-related learning enhancement is generalizable to everyday life, then it is clear that sleep plays a vital role in children's educational attainment.

Sleep is a complex state which involves interactions between neurophysiological, psychological and neurochemical processes which in turn have an important impact on brain functioning, immune responses, mental health, and quality of life. The incidence of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) varies across different countries and have been linked with lifespan sleep disturbances with further effects on people's physical and mental health functioning. This review aims to explore the significance of ACE and its impact on sleep by identifying key documents, thematic trends, and knowledge gaps in the literature. A document co-citation analysis of 882 documents from Scopus was conducted to achieve this goal. Research trends focused on the long-term consequences of childhood adverse events with respect to sleep, with emphasis on the role of type, timing and accumulation of these experiences. A recent study has also taken advantage of machine learning and network analysis for discovering essential factors could offer useful information about adults with history of childhood adversity and sleep problems. The studies show unanimously that ACEs are associated with multiple sleep disturbances/disorders which can persist into adulthood, with consequences for suboptimal cognitive and behavioral functioning. Such neurobiological scars can be associated with an increased risk of mental disorders. Future studies are needed that focus on longitudinal analysis of the relationship between early adversity, sleep, and resilience characteristics in adult populations exploring the use of objective assessment measures as well as neurobiological markers.

BACKGROUND: Childhood experiences either adverse (ACE) or benevolent (BCE) can indirectly impact sleep quality in adult life, which in turn are modulated by the interplay of a variety of factors such as depression, anxiety, resilience and mental health problems. METHODS: A cross-sectional observational study was conducted across the UK and the Middle Eastern countries during the COVID-pandemic on 405 participants. An online survey used a combination of questionnaires to assess ACE and BCEs. The following tools were then used to assess the contribution of resilience, stress, depression and anxiety respectively: Brief Resilience Scale (BRS), Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10), Patient Health Questionnaire-2 (PHQ-2) and General Anxiety Disorder-2 (GAD-2) scale on childhood experiences. The extent of sleep disturbances experienced over a period of seven days was assessed using the PROMIS Sleep Disturbance Short-Form Tool. A serial-parallel mediation model was used to evaluate the impact of the mediators on childhood experiences and sleep quality. RESULTS: Over 50% of the cohort were from Middle Eastern countries. Four or more BCEs were experienced by 94.3% of the cohort. In contrast, 67.9% of participants experienced at least one ACE before the age of 18 years, with moderate levels of stress, mild depression and anxiety were reported in 3.7%, 13% and 20% of participants respectively. Whilst 25.4% of participants reported having had four or more ACEs, with higher reports in the middle easter countries (32%). ACEs were found to correlate with sleep disturbance whilst BCEs showed an inverse correlation. The relationship between ACE and sleep disturbances was shown to be mediated by stress, and anxiety, but not by resilience or depression. Resilience and stress, and resilience and anxiety serially mediated the interaction between ACE and sleep disturbance. With regards to BCE, an inverse association with sleep disturbance was recorded with similar mediators of stress and anxiety observed. CONCLUSION: This study confirms the negative effects of ACEs, and the positive effects of BCEs on sleep in adulthood which are both mediated predominantly by psychological resilience, anxiety and stress. Strategies aimed at improving psychological resilience as well as addressing stress and anxiety may help improve sleep quality.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to explore maternal experiences about autism services in Saudi Arabia. The main focus of the study was to gather maternal perceptions and needs about current services used for their autistic children in Saudi Arabia. The outcomes from this study will be an important source of information for service providers as parental experiences are considered as a reliable source of information about their children. METHOD AND PROCEDURE: Data were gathered from seven focus groups with a total of twenty-nine mothers from different geographical areas in Saudi Arabia. Background data about the mothers and their family' were also collected and considered within the framework. RESULTS: Three master themes were generated; i) maternal experiences of daily home/school provisions, ii) maternal suggestions to enhance existing services, and iii) maternal suggestions for future services. The findings from study provide with an understanding of Saudi mothers of autistic children's perception of autism provision services. This study provides data from maternal lived experiences about their needs for services, barriers and their suggestions for better services. It also provides a direction for parental and community support which ought to be initiated in Saudi Arabia to provide better family outcomes.

Developmental disabilities have been widely studied in higher-income countries. However, most individuals with these conditions live in low- and middle-income countries and they are reportedly under-represented in the scientific literature. To tackle this issue, previous research has provided insight into the thematic developments in the research on developmental disabilities in Africa by means of a scientometric approach to reviews. The current work aims to extend the scientometric approach to investigate the main interests in the literature on developmental disabilities conducted in Middle Eastern countries. A total of 1110 documents were retrieved from Scopus and their patterns of co-citation were analysed with the CiteSpace software. Research in Developmental Disabilities emerged to be the main source in the sample of downloaded documents. Furthermore, a total of six main thematic domains and the four most impactful documents in the literature were identified. Results showed that research on developmental disabilities in the Middle East has been mainly focused on uncovering the genetic basis of this group of conditions. The study of clinical profiles, diagnosis, management, and treatment of individuals with developmental disabilities have been so far under-investigated and represents material for future studies.

BACKGROUND: Autistic children and adolescents are 40-80% more likely to experience sleep disturbances than their neurotypical peers. In the United Kingdom, melatonin is licensed for short-term usage in adults at age 55 years and above; however, it is often prescribed to autistic children and adolescents to help manage their sleep. The current study sought to understand parental experiences and their motivation of using melatonin to manage sleep disturbances of their autistic children. METHODS: The sample included 26 parents who took part in online focus groups answering questions regarding their experiences of using melatonin as a sleep treatment for their children diagnosed with autism between 4 and 18 years old. RESULTS: Four main themes were identified: (i) parental perception of melatonin used as 'a naturally produced hormone'; (ii) perceived benefits of using melatonin to improve their child's sleep; (iii) administration of melatonin: dosage amount, timing and pulverising; and (iv) expectation and apprehension over melatonin use. CONCLUSION: Some parents reported success with the use of melatonin, and others reported the effects being limited or diminishing in time. Suggestions for healthcare professionals and families regarding melatonin usage in the UK are made with respect to setting clear guidelines for usage, whilst ensuring expectations are set and managed appropriately.

BACKGROUND: Intellectual disability (ID) is a condition that requires complex systematic special support, including speech therapy. Speech therapists in Ukraine face professional challenges in working with persons with ID in the conditions of the military conflict with the Russian Federation. This qualitative study offers a representation of the situation of speech therapy practice in Ukraine in May-June 2022, and the impact of military conflict on persons with ID and their families. METHODS: The current study made use of an adaptation of the five-step IPSE approach. Ten Ukrainian speech therapists were interviewed. Due to subjective and objective reasons arising from the current situation in Ukraine, data collection through sampling was limited. RESULTS: A general framework based on two central axes of experience was applied in the data analysis. The two axes are: 1) Speech therapy of persons with ID in Ukraine and 2) Impact of the military situation on speech therapy in Ukraine. The following key categories of the speech therapy experience were discussed: 1) Therapeutic Activities, 2) Clients, 3) Challenges and 4) Emotional wellbeing. The results are presented for each category and discussed in terms of both central axes of experience. Additional considerations of the speech therapy experience in Ukraine that were raised during the interviews are also briefly discussed. CONCLUSIONS: Our results indicate the problem of organizing speech therapy assistance for persons with ID from Ukraine during the analysed period. The consequences of the situation in the country on speech therapists, people with ID, and their families are discussed highlighting difficulties, challenges as well as emerging positive attitudes.

Food and sleep are critical for human survival. However, for individuals with eating disorders, they face two critical disruptions in terms of abnormal feeding patterns as well as poor sleep. These difficulties are exacerbated as a result of the recent coronavirus pandemic, which caused drastic changes in daily life schedules and living arrangements. The current study therefore aims to explore, through qualitative means, how individuals with eating disorders are affected during the subsequent lockdowns, with a particular emphasis on the pandemic's impact on their sleep in Saudi Arabia. Two groups of participants were recruited: participants with eating disorders and healthy controls. Based on thematic analysis of focus group discussion data, it was found that both types of participants experienced poorer sleep and poorer mental health. Participants with eating disorders too showed a deterioration of their symptoms. However, healthy participants tended to show greater levels of recovery and coping. Based on the study findings, recommendations for future studies are made.

Objectives: A large proportion of individuals with chronic pain experience insomnia-related symptoms which can be persistent in nature, and negatively impact one's quality of life. This single arm trial aimed to investigate the feasibility and preliminary efficacy of CBT-I, adapted for people with chronic musculoskeletal pain, delivered via telehealth. Methods: We conducted a single arm feasibility trial in which 10 adult women (M age = 50.76 years, SD = 8.03 years) with self-reported insomnia and a diagnosed chronic musculoskeletal chronic pain received six CBT-I individual treatment sessions over 6-10 weeks. Treatment was delivered via telehealth. Participants completed weekly sleep diaries, and self-reported measures of insomnia, pain, anxiety and depression pre-treatment, post-treatment, and one-month follow-up. Results: The trial yielded, high levels of compliance with intervention protocols, and affirmative feedback on satisfaction which demonstrated feasibility. The enrolment rate into the study was 37% (27 participants screened, 10 participants enrolled). The intervention was associated with statistically and clinically meaningful improvements in self-reported insomnia severity. There were statistically significant improvements in sleep efficiency, wake after sleep onset, sleep onset latency, anxiety and depression. Conclusion: Adapted CBT-I delivered via telehealth may be a feasible, acceptable, and efficacious therapeutic approach for individuals with co-existent sleep and chronic pain. Future trials should adopt a randomized design against usual care.

Eating disorders (EDs), including anorexia nervosa (AN), are severe psychological disorders that affect individuals' eating behaviours and body perception. Previous research has shown that people with EDs often report poorer sleep. Some literature has suggested that it is mood dysregulation that mediates the link between EDs and sleep. However, the majority of previous studies only focused on females, while male ED patients have been overlooked. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the relationships between EDs, mood, and sleep among male ED patients. Using a mixture of actigraphy recordings and self-reported questionnaires, the current study analysed a total 33 adult male participants diagnosed with AN. The participants first wore an actigraphy device for seven continuous days, following which their ED severity and mood were assessed by the Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire (EDE-Q) and Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS), respectively. The descriptive actigraphy results suggested that, similar to females, males with AN also showed disturbed sleep, including insomnia, sleep fragmentation, low sleep efficiency, and increased napping sessions. However, when ED severity was correlated against actigraphy data and mood, no significant relationships were found between them. Thus, it was suggested that future studies may investigate discrete ED symptoms instead of global ED severity interacting with sleep and mood. Overall, this study represents an initial step in the investigation of EDs and sleep and mood dysregulation among an under-represented sample.

Sleep duration and disturbances in typically developing (TD) children have been found to vary across countries. Given the impact of culture on sleep patterns in TD children, it is also necessary to examine the impact of culture on sleep patterns in children with atypical development. However, previous studies have often relied only on parent reports of children's sleep. Hence, the present study conducted a cross-cultural comparison of sleep duration and disturbances of school-aged TD children and autistic children in the UK and South Korea (hereafter Korea) using both subjective and objective sleep measurements. Cultural differences were observed in both actigraphy measures and parent reports of children's sleep duration and disturbances. Both TD children and autistic children in Korea had a later bedtime, later getting up time and shorter nocturnal sleep duration than their peers in the UK (p < .05). Furthermore, greater parent-reported sleep disturbances were reported in TD children in Korea compared to TD children in the UK and in autistic children in the UK compared to autistic children in Korea. Correlational analyses indicated that most parent-reported measures of children's sleep did not significantly correlate with objective measures and child reports, suggesting that studies on children's sleep can benefit by collecting data from multiple sources. Taken together, these findings suggest a cultural influence on sleep duration and disturbances of both TD children and autistic children. This study raises questions for further research to identify factors underlying cultural differences in children's sleep duration and disturbances.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the current study was to examine the potential relationship between sleep patterns, cortisol levels, and anxiety profiles in adolescents with Williams Syndrome (WS) compared to typically developing adolescents. METHOD: Thirteen adolescents with WS and thirteen TD adolescents (age range 12-18 years) were recruited. Participants were provided with a "testing kit", containing instructions for collecting data through a sleep diary, MotionWare actigraphy, the Childhood Sleep Habits Questionnaire (CSHQ), and the Spence Children's Anxiety Scale, and a salivary cortisol collection kit. RESULTS: Adolescents in the WS group did not show diurnal variation in salivary cortisol. Significantly higher scores were reported for two CSHQ subsections, night wakings and parasomnias, in the WS group. Regarding the actigraphy, only significantly longer sleep latency was observed in the WS group. In comparison to the TD group, the WS group had significantly higher anxiety. As expected, the TD group showed typical diurnal variation in cortisol, whereas the WS group showed a flattened cortisol profile throughout the day. CONCLUSIONS: From the developmental perspective, this study provides new data supporting the conclusion that sleep problems are not transient but continue to persist into adolescence in WS. Future studies ought to consider examining the role of cortisol and its interplay with anxiety levels and sleep problems across the lifespan in individuals with WS.

Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in the United Kingdom. While androgen-deprivation therapy is the most common treatment for prostate cancer, patients undergoing this treatment typically experience side effects in terms of sleep disturbances. However, the relation between prostate cancer and sleep and the way in which sleep interventions may benefit oncological patients is underinvestigated in the literature. The current study aims to review in a data-driven approach the existing literature on the field of prostate cancer and sleep to identify impactful documents and major thematic domains. To do so, a sample of 1547 documents was downloaded from Scopus, and a document co-citation analysis was conducted on CiteSpace software. In the literature, 12 main research domains were identified as well as 26 impactful documents. Research domains were examined regarding the link between prostate cancer and sleep, by taking into account variations in hormonal levels. A major gap in the literature was identified in the lack of use of objective assessment of sleep quality in patients with prostate cancer.

The coronavirus pandemic identified a clinical need for pediatric tele-neuropsychology (TeleNP) assessment. However, due to limited research, clinicians have had little information to develop, adapt, or select reliable pediatric assessments for TeleNP. This preliminary systematic review aimed to examine the feasibility of pediatric TeleNP assessment alongside (1) patient/family acceptability, (2) reliability, and (3) the quality of the literature. Between May 2021 and November 2022, manual searches of PubMed, PsycINFO, and Google Scholar were conducted using terms related to "pediatric" and "tele-neuropsychology." After extracting relevant papers with samples aged 0-22 years, predefined exclusion criteria were applied. Quality assessment was completed using the AXIS appraisal tool (91% rater-agreement). Twenty-one studies were included in the review, with reported qualitative and quantitative data on the feasibility, reliability, and acceptability extracted. Across included studies, TeleNP was completed via telephone/video conference with participants either at home, in a local setting accompanied by an assistant, or in a different room but in the same building as the assessor. Pediatric TeleNP was generally reported to be feasible (e.g., minimal behavioral differences) and acceptable (e.g., positive feedback). Nineteen studies conducted some statistical analyses to assess reliability. Most observed no significant difference between in-person and TeleNP for most cognitive domains (i.e., IQ), with a minority finding variable reliability for some tests (e.g., attention, speech, visuo-spatial). Limited reporting of sex-assigned birth, racialized identity, and ethnicity reduced the quality and generalizability of the literature. To aid clinical interpretations, studies should assess underexamined cognitive domains (e.g., processing speed) with larger, more inclusive samples. Sleep and diet are essential for maintaining physical and mental health. These two factors are closely intertwined and affect each other in both timing and quality. Eating disorders, including anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa, are often accompanied by different sleep problems. In modern society, an increasing number of studies are being conducted on the relationship between eating disorders and sleep. To gain a more comprehensive understanding of this field and highlight influential papers as well as the main research domains in this area, a scientometric approach was used to review 727 publications from 1971 to 2023. All documents were retrieved from Scopus through the following string "TITLE-ABS (("sleep" OR "insomnia") AND ("anorexia nervosa" OR "bulimia nervosa" OR "binge eating" OR "eating disorder*") AND NOT "obes*") AND (LIMIT-TO (LANGUAGE, "English"))". A document co-citation analysis was applied to map the relationship between relevant articles and their cited references as well as the gaps in the literature. Nine publications on sleep and eating disorders were frequently cited, with an article by Vetrugno and colleagues on nocturnal eating being the most impactful in the network. The results also indicated a total of seven major thematic research clusters. The qualitative inspection of clusters strongly highlights the reciprocal influence of disordered eating and sleeping patterns. Researchers have modelled this reciprocal influence by taking into account the role played by pharmacological (e.g., zolpidem, topiramate), hormonal (e.g., ghrelin), and psychological (e.g., anxiety, depression) factors, pharmacological triggers, and treatments for eating disorders and sleep problems. The use of scientometric perspectives provides valuable insights into the field related to sleep and eating disorders, which can guide future research directions and foster a more comprehensive understanding of this important area.

Study objectives: Compared to typically developing children and young adults (CYA-TD), those living with Sickle Cell Disease (CYA-SCD) experience more cognitive difficulties, particularly with executive function. Few studies have examined the relative importance of silent cerebral infarction (SCI), haemoglobin and arterial oxygen content on age-related cognitive changes using cross-sectional or longitudinal (developmental trajectory) data. This study presents cohort data from a single timepoint to inform studies with multiple timepoints. Methods: We compared cross-sectional raw and scaled scores as age-related changes in cognition (trajectories) in CYA-SCD and age-and ethnicity-matched CYA-TD. We also compared cross-sectional age-related changes in cognition (trajectories) in CYA-SCD with and without SCI to CYA-TD. General cognitive abilities were assessed using Wechsler Intelligence Scales, including the Verbal Comprehension Index (VCI) and Perceptual Reasoning Index (PRI) underpinning IQ. Executive function was evaluated using the Delis-Kaplan Executive Function System (D-KEFS) Tower subtest and the Behaviour Rating Inventory of Executive Function (BRIEF) questionnaire. SCI were identified from contemporaneous 3 T MRI; participants with overt stroke were excluded. Recent haemoglobin was available and oxygen saturation (SpO2) was measured on the day of the MRI. Results: Data were available for 120 CYA-SCD [62 male; age = 16.78 ± 4.79 years; 42 (35%) with SCI] and 53 CYA-TD (23 male; age = 17.36 ± 5.16). Compared with CYA-TD, CYA-SCD experienced a delayed onset in VCI and slower rate of development for BRIEF Global Executive Composite, Metacognition Index (MI), and Behaviour Regulation Index. The rate of executive function development for the BRIEF MI differed significantly between CYA-TD and CYA-SCD, with those with SCI showing a 26% delay compared with CYA-TD. For CYA-SCD with SCI, arterial oxygen content explained 22% of the variance in VCI and 37% in PRI, while haemoglobin explained 29% of the variance in PRI. Conclusion: Age-related cognitive trajectories of CYA-SCD may not be impaired but may progress more slowly. Longitudinal studies are required, using tests unaffected by practice. In addition to initiation of medical treatment, including measures to improve arterial oxygen content, early cognitive intervention, educational support, and delivery of extracurricular activities could support cognitive development for CYA-SCD.Graphical Abstract.
