BACKGROUND: Currently, several studies have explored the association between the modified creatinine index (mCI) and prognosis in patients on hemodialysis (HD). However, some of their results are contradictory. Therefore, this study was conducted to comprehensively assess the role of mCI in predicting prognosis in HD patients through meta-analysis. METHODS: We searched and screened literature from PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane databases from their establishment until March 2024. Relevant data were extracted. The statistical analysis was performed using Stata 15.0, RevMan 5.4, and Meta DiSc 1.4 software. RESULTS: The results showed a positive association between mCI and nutritional status in HD patients (BMI r = 0.19, 95% CI: 0.1-0.28, p = .000; albumin r = 0.36, 95% CI: 0.33-0.39, p = .000; normalized protein catabolic rate (nPCR) r = 0.25, 95% CI: 0.13-0.38, p = .000). In addition, mCI in deceased HD patients was significantly lower than that in HD survivors (SMD = -0.94, 95% CI: -1.46 to -0.42, p = .000). A low mCI was associated with an increased risk of all-cause death in HD patients (HR = 1.95, 95% CI: 1.57-2.42, p = .000). In addition, a low mCI was significantly associated with decreased overall survival (OS) in HD patients (HR = 3.01, 95% CI: 2.44-3.70, p = .000). mCI showed moderate diagnostic accuracy for sarcopenia in both male and female HD patients (male AUC = 0.7891; female AUC = 0.759). CONCLUSIONS: The mCI can be used as a prognostic marker for HD patients, and monitoring mCI may help to optimize the management of HD and improve overall prognosis in patients.

Vibrio parahaemolyticus: is recognized as the main cause of gastroenteritis associated with consumption of seafood. Bacteriocin-producing Lactobacillus plantarum FGC-12 isolated from golden carp intestine had strong antibacterial activity toward V. parahaemolyticus. The fish-borne bacteriocin was purified by a three-step procedure consisting of ethyl acetate extraction, gel filtration chromatography and high performance liquid chromatography. Its molecular weight was estimated at 4.1 kDa using SDS-PAGE. The fish-borne bacteriocin reached the maximum production at stationary phase after 20 h. It was heat-stable (30 min at 121 °C) and remained active at pH range from 3.0 to 5.5, but was sensitive to nutrasin, papain and pepsin. Its minimum inhibitory concentration for V. parahaemolyticus was 6.0 mg/ml. Scanning electron microscopy analysis showed that the fish-borne bacteriocin disrupted cell wall of V. parahaemolyticus. The antibacterial mechanism of the fish-borne bacteriocin against V. parahaemolyticus might be described as action on membrane integrity in terms of the leakage of electrolytes, the losses of Na+K+-ATPase, AKP and proteins. The addition of the fish-borne bacteriocin to shrimps leaded V. parahaemolyticus to reduce 1.3 log units at 4 °C storage for 6 day. Moreover, a marked decline in total volatile base nitrogen and total viable counts was observed in bacteriocin treated samples than the control. It is clear that this fish-borne bacteriocin has promising potential as biopreservation for the control of V. parahaemolyticus in aquatic products.

BACKGROUND: Disulfidoptosis is an unconventional form of programmed cell death that distinguishes itself from well-established cell death pathways like ferroptosis, pyroptosis, and necroptosis. METHODS: Initially, we conducted a single-cell analysis of the GSE131907 dataset from the GEO database to identify disulfidoptosis-related genes (DRGs). We utilized differentially expressed DRGs to classify TCGA samples with an unsupervised clustering algorithm. Prognostic models were built using Cox regression and LASSO regression. RESULTS: Two DRG-related clusters (C1 and C2) were identified based on the DEGs from single-cell sequencing data analysis. In comparison to C1, C2 exhibited significantly worse overall prognosis, along with lower expression levels of immune checkpoint genes (ICGs) and chemoradiotherapy sensitivity-related genes (CRSGs). Furthermore, C2 displayed a notable enrichment in metabolic pathways and cell cycle-associated mechanisms. C2 was also linked to the development and spread of tumors. We created a prognostic risk model known as the DRG score, which relies on the expression levels of five DRGs. Patients were categorized into high-risk and low-risk groups depending on their DRG score, with the former group being linked to a poorer prognosis and higher TMB score. Moreover, the DRG score displayed significant correlations with CRSGs, ICGs, the tumor immune dysfunction and exclusion (TIDE) score, and chemotherapeutic sensitivity. Subsequently, we identified a significant correlation between the DRG score and monocyte macrophages. Additionally, crucial DRGs were additionally validated using qRT-PCR. CONCLUSIONS: Our new DRG score can predict the immune landscape and prognosis of LUAD, serving as a reference for immunotherapy and chemotherapy.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of artificial digestion method on inspection of meat for Trichinella spiralis contamination and its influence on activity and infectivity of muscle larvae. METHODS: The mice were inoculated orally with 100 muscle larvae of T. spiralis and sacrificed on the 30th day following the infection. The muscle larvae of T. spiralis were recovered by three different test protocols employing variations of the artificial digestion method, i.e. the first test protocol evaluating digestion for 2 hours (magnetic stirrer method), the second test protocol evaluating digestion for 12 hours, and the third test protocol evaluating digestion for 20 hours. Each test group included ten samples, and each of which included 300 encapsulated larvae. Meanwhile, the activity of the recovered muscle larvae was also assessed. Forty mice were randomly divided into a control group and three digestion groups, so 4 groups (with 10 mice per group) in total. In the control group, each mouse was orally inoculated with 100 encapsulated larvae of T. spiralis. In all of the digestion test groups, each mouse was orally inoculated with 100 muscle larvae of T. spiralis. The larvae were then recovered from the different three test groups by the artificial digestion protocol variations. All the infected mice were sacrificed on the 30th day following the infection, and the muscle larvae of T. spiralis were examined respectively by the diaphragm compression method and the magnetic stirrer method. RESULTS: The muscle larvae detection rates were 78.47%, 76.73%, and 68.63%, the death rates were 0.59%, 4.60%, and 7.43%, and the reduction rates were 60.56%, 61.94%, and 73.07%, in the Test Group One (2-hour digestion), Test Group Two (12-hour digestion) and Test Group Three (20-hour digestion), respectively. CONCLUSION: The magnetic stirrer method (2-hour digestion method) is superior to both 12-hour digestion and 20-hour digestion methods when assessed by the detection rate, activity and infectivity of muscle larvae.
