RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To systematically investigate how fatigue, depression, anxiety, sleep quality, and life quality are influenced by the Internet-based self-management program (IBSMP) among cancer patients. DATA SOURCES: Eight databases (Cochrane Library, Ovid, Web of Science, Medline, Embase, Chinese biomedical database (CBM), China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), and Wanfang) were systematically searched from inception to January 2019. METHODS: The aim of this study is to identify randomized controlled trials (RCTs) associated with the IBSMP among cancer-related fatigue (CRF) patients. Two reviewers independently screened 1128 records and selected 13 articles, including 1603 patients for inclusion. The quality of the evidence was assessed at the study level and at the outcome level. RESULTS: The meta-analysis showed that the IBSMP was effective for ameliorating fatigue and related symptoms among cancer survivors (the Brief Fatigue Index, relative risk = 0.74, 95% confidence interval (CI; 0.69, 0.79), P < 0.01; the Cancer Fatigue Scale or the Multidimension Fatigue Scale, weighted mean difference = -10.15, 95% CI (-11.42, -8.89), P < 0.01; the Self-rating Anxiety scale, relative risk = 1.07, 95% CI (0.55, 2.05), P < 0.01; the Self-rating Depression scale, relative risk = 0.70, 95% CI (0.60, 0.81), P < 0.01; the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, relative risk = 0.46, 95% CI (0.33, 0.62), P < 0.01; and the Function Assessment of Cancer Therapy-General scale or the Function Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Breast, weighted mean difference = 13.76, 95% CI (3.38, 24.14), P < 0.01.). CONCLUSION: This meta-analysis demonstrates that the IBSMP, as one of the rehabilitation forms, can reduce the incidence of fatigue, depression, and anxiety and improve sleep quality and life quality among CRF patients.

Chromate is one of the hazardous toxic pollutants. Reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) has shown to reduce the toxicity of chromate. This work examined the reduction of Cr(VI) using an anaerobic batch cultures of Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 containing Fe(III). To do so, 10 mg/L Cr(VI) was reduced to Cr(III) within 3 days along with the oxidization of Fe(II) to Fe(III). The removal rate of Cr(VI) increased with increasing the concentration of Fe(III). In the absence of Cr(VI), the Fe(II) concentration of the batch culture increased with the growth of S. oneidensis MR-1. These data showed that S. oneidensis MR-1 could reduce Fe(III) into Fe(II), resulting in reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III). During this process, the anthraquinone-2,6-disulfonate (AQDS) acted as an electron shuttle. Microscopic analysis showed that Cr(VI) had toxic effects on S. oneidensis MR-1 due to the appearance of Cr species on the bacterial surface. Cr2O3 or Cr(OH)3 precipitates formed during Cr(VI) reduction was identified using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The AQDS as an electron shuttle enhanced the Cr(VI) reduction by S. oneidensis MR-1. Microbial reduction of Cr(VI) can be a useful technique for Cr detoxification.

BACKGROUND: To present the treatment outcome for patients with stenosing tenosynovitis of thumb flexor tendon treated with a small S incision and page turning style of annular ligament partial resection. MATERIAL AND METHODS: During a 2-year period between August 2011 and July 2013, 12 consecutive patients (mean age, 45.8 years) with stenosing tenosynovitis of the thumb flexor tendon were prospectively enrolled into this study. All 12 patients underwent longitudinal S skin incision to expose annular ligament and thumb flexor tendon, and with page turning style of annular ligament partial resection to finish the operation. The average range of motion of metacarpophalangeal thumb joint, Quick disability of arm, shoulder, and hand and Short Musculoskeletal Function Assessment Dysfunction score of arm and hand were primary outcome measures. RESULTS: There were 9 cases of stiff metacarpophalangeal joint of thumb and 3 cases of snapping thumb for stenosing tenosynovitis. At 1-year follow-up, all stenosing tenosynovitis had healed by an average of 4 weeks. The average range of motion of the metacarpophalangeal joint was 37.1° (range, 34-40°). No patients had recurrence, cicatricial contraction, or postoperative infection. The average disability of arm, shoulder, and hand was 0.3 out of 100 (range, 0-1.67), and average Short Musculoskeletal Functional Assessment Dysfunction score of arm and hand was 6.9 out of 40 (range, 0-15.6). All 12 patients stated that they were highly satisfied. CONCLUSIONS: Small S incision and page turning style of annular ligament partial resection for stenosing tenosynovitis of thumb flexor tendon is a safe, simple, and reliable alternative treatment with minimal soft-tissue irritation, good functional results and recovery can be expected.

A reflective optic-fiber orientation-dependant inclinometer, in which a short piece of polarization-maintaining photonic crystal fiber (PM-PCF) is spliced with a lead-in single mode fiber (SMF) without any offset, is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The hollow holes within the PM-PCF are partly collapsed due to the directional arc-heating splicing and couple two linearly polarized (LP) modes into the downstream PM-PCF. Then two LP-modes are reflected at the end face of PM-PCF and recoupled back into the lead-in SMF again via the collapsed splicing cross section. A well-defined interference pattern is obtained as the result of polarized modes interference. Both orientation and sensitivity of bending is determined unambiguously with this compact PM-PCF configuration.

RESUMO

An in-fiber quasi-Michelson interferometer working on reflection is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The device consists of a short section of multimode fiber (MMF) followed by a single-mode fiber (SMF) whose end face is terminated by a thick silver film. The MMF excites cladding modes into downstream SMF via the mismatched-core splicing interface. The core-cladding modes are reflected back by the silver film and recoupled to the core of lead-in SMF through the MMF. A well-defined interference pattern is obtained as the result of core-cladding mode interference. A configuration with a 40 mm pigtail SMF at a wavelength of 1528 nm exhibits a water level sensitivity of -49.8 pm/mm and a liquid refractive index sensitivity of -574.6 (pm/mm)/RIU (refractive index unit). In addition, the selected dip provides a considered temperature sensitivity of -61.26 pm/°C and a high displacement sensitivity of -1018.6 pm/mm.

An in-line fiber quasi-Michelson interferometer (IFQMI) working on reflection is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The sensing head is fabricated by splicing a section of polarization-maintaining photonic crystal fiber (PM-PCF) with a lead-in single mode fiber (SMF). Some cladding modes are excited into the PM-PCF via the mismatch-core splicing interface between PM-PCF and SMF. Besides, two orthogonal polarized-modes are formed due to the inherent multiholes cladding structure of the PM-PCF. A well-defined interference pattern is obtained as the result of cladding-orthogonal modes interference. The IFQMI with 20 cm long PM-PCF is proposed for strain and torsion measurements. A strain sensitivity of -1.3 pm/µÎµ and a torsion sensitivity of -19.17 pm/deg are obtained, respectively. The proposed device with 10 cm long PM-PCF exhibits a considered temperature sensitivity of 9.9 pm/°C. The IFQMI has a compact structure and small size, making it a good candidate for multiparameter measurements.

Metabolic bone diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and osteoporosis, are characterized as imbalance between bone formation and bone resorption, leading to bone microarchitecture damage and bone mineral density loss. Bone loss is huge threat for older people's health, which imposes a heavy financial burden on patients and their families. However, the effectiveness of bone loss treatment in clinical practice is limited. With the understanding of the molecular and cellular regulators and mediators of bone remodelling, we know that some signaling pathways and inflammatory cytokines play important roles in the development of RA and osteoporosis. The increasing evidence showed that tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-like weak inducer of apoptosis (Tweak)/fibroblast growth factor-inducible 14 (Fn14) signalling controls a variety of cellular activities in biological processes, such as proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis and has diverse biological functions in pathological mechanisms like inflammation that are associated with the process of bone metabolism. Recent studies suggest that the interactions between Tweak/Fn14 play critical roles in osteoblast and osteoclast differentiation and apoptosis, especially in those rheumatoid arthritis patients. These findings suggest that interventions targeting Tweak/Fn14 signaling pathway to regulate osteoblast-osteoclast coupling according to its biological effects, which results in promoting osteoblast formation and inhibiting osteoclast resorption, may be a promising approach for bone loss prevention and treatment in the near future.
