BACKGROUND: A major review of Victoria's ambulance services identified the need to improve public awareness of the role of ambulances as an emergency service. A communications campaign was developed to address this challenge. This research paper expands on an initial evaluation of the campaign by focusing on the long-term behavioural outcomes. METHODS: The behavioural evaluation involved two types of data collection - administrative data (routine collection from various health services) and survey data (cross-sectional community-wide surveys to measure behavioural intentions). RESULTS: Behavioural intentions for accessing two of the targeted non-emergency services increased after the second phase of the campaign commenced. There was also a significant change in the slope of call trends for emergency ambulances. This decrease is also likely attributed to the second phase of the campaign as significant level effects were identified 3 and 9 months after it commenced. CONCLUSIONS: A long-term campaign developed through evidence review, stakeholder consultation and behavioural theory was successful in reducing the number of daily calls requesting an emergency ambulance in Victoria and in increasing intentions to use alternative services. This research highlights the importance of collaborative intervention design along with the importance of implementing a robust monitoring and evaluation framework.

BACKGROUND: In Victoria, Australia, emergency calls requesting an ambulance have been increasing at a rate higher than population growth. While most of these calls are for genuine emergencies, many do not require an immediate ambulance response. A collaborative research approach was undertaken to address this issue. The aim of this paper was to evaluate the effectiveness of applying a behaviour change approach to this challenge by first addressing antecedents of behaviour (attitudes, awareness and knowledge). METHODS: The project included a formative research phase to inform the design of a mass media campaign and subsequent evaluation of the campaign. RESULTS: Results indicated that the campaign was successful in increasing community attitudes towards ambulances as being for emergencies only, particularly among those familiar with the campaign material and with other health service options (such as telephone advice lines). CONCLUSIONS: These findings provide support for adopting the Forum approach to increase the chances that a mass media campaign will achieve its stated objectives. Recommendations for future campaign activities are discussed.

Organocatalyzed ring-opening polymerization is a powerful tool for the synthesis of a variety of functional, readily degradable polyesters and polycarbonates. We report the use of (thio)ureas in combination with cyclopropenimine bases as a unique catalyst for the polymerization of cyclic esters and carbonates with a large span of reactivities. Methodologies of exceptionally effective and selective cocatalyst combinations were devised to produce polyesters and polycarbonates with narrow dispersities (D = 1.01-1.10). Correlations of the pKa of the various ureas and cyclopropenimine bases revealed the critical importance of matching the pKa of the two cocatalysts to achieve the most efficient polymerization conditions. It was found that promoting strong H-bonding interactions with a noncompetitive organic solvent, such as CH2Cl2, enabled greatly increased polymerization rates. The stereoselective polymerization of rac-lactide afforded stereoblock poly(lactides) that crystallize as stereocomplexes, as confirmed by wide-angle X-ray scattering.

Compartmentalization is a viable approach for ensuring the turnover of a solution cascade reaction with ephemeral intermediates, which may otherwise deactivate in the bulk solution. In biochemistry or enzyme-relevant cascade reactions, extensive models have been constructed to quantitatively analyze the efficacy of compartmentalization. Nonetheless, the application of compartmentalization and its quantitative analysis in non-biochemical reactions is seldom performed, leaving much uncertainty about whether compartmentalization remains effective for non-biochemical reactions, such as organometallic, cascade reactions. Here, we report our exemplary efficacy analysis of compartmentalization in our previously reported cascade reaction for ambient CH4-to-CH3OH conversion, mediated by an O2-deactivated RhII metalloradical with O2 as the terminal oxidant in a Si nanowire array electrode. We experimentally identified and quantified the key reaction intermediates, including the RhII metalloradical and reactive oxygen species (ROS) from O2. Based on such findings, we experimentally determined that the nanowire array enables about 81% of the generated ephemeral intermediate RhII metalloradical in air, to be utilized towards CH3OH formation, which is 0% in a homogeneous solution. Such an experimentally determined value was satisfactorily consistent with the results from our semi-quantitative kinetic model. The consistency suggests that the reported CH4-to-CH3OH conversion surprisingly possesses minimal unforeseen side reactions, and is favorably efficient as a compartmentalized cascade reaction. Our quantitative evaluation of the reaction efficacy offers design insights and caveats into application of nanomaterials to achieve spatially controlled organometallic cascade reactions.

The effects of chromosomal rearrangements on recombination rates were tested by the analysis of chiasma distribution patterns in wild house mice. Males and females of two chromosomal races from Tunisia differing by nine pairs of Robertsonian (Rb) fusions (standard all-acrocentric, 2N = 40 and 2N = 22) were studied. A significant decrease in chiasma number (CN) was observed in Rb mice compared to standard ones for both sexes. The difference in CN was due to a reduction in the number of proximal chiasmata and was associated with an overall more distal redistribution. These features were related to distance of chiasmata to the centromere, suggesting that the centromere effect was more pronounced in Rb fusions than in acrocentric chromosomes. These modifications were interpreted in terms of structural meiotic constraints, although genic factors were likely involved in patterning the observed differences between sexes within races. Thus, the change in chromosomal structure in Rb mice was associated with a generalized decrease in recombination due to a reduction in diploid number, a lower CN, and a decrease in the efficiency of recombination. The effects of such modifications on patterns of genic diversity are discussed in the light of models of evolution of recombination.

Chromosomal rearrangements such as Robertsonian (Rb) fusions constitute a major phenomenon in the evolution of genome organization in a wide range of organisms. Although proximate mechanisms for the formation of Rb fusion are now well identified, the evolutionary forces that drive chromosomal evolution remain poorly understood. In the house mouse, numerous chromosomal races occur in nature, each defined by a unique combination of Rb fusions. Among the 106 different Rb fusions that were reported from natural populations, the low involvement of chromosome 19 in Rb fusions is striking, prompting the question of the randomness of chromosomal involvement in Rb fusions. We uncover a significant quadratic relationship between chromosome size and probability of fusing, which has never previously been in this species. It appears that fusions involving chromosome 19 are not particularly infrequent, given the expected low fusion probability associated with the chromosome's size. The results are discussed, assessing selective processes or constraints that may operate on chromosome size.
