RESUMO

Three methods of age estimation were compared for Dentex dentex. Based on sectioned otoliths, scales appeared to be relevant only up to 5 years and whole otoliths up to 12 years. The maximum estimated age was 36 years, which constitutes to date the oldest age reported.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Cervical flavum ligament ossification (C-OLF) is very rare source of myeloradiculopathy. Less than 100 cases have been reported in modern English literature up to 2020. Association between C-OLF and Diffuse Idiopathic Skeletal Hyperostosis (DISH) at cervical level has never been described. METHODS: In this article we performed a systematic review about epidemiology, physiopathology, clinical and surgical management of C-OLF. Moreover, we research its possible association with other cervical spine ligament ossification and in particular with anterior longitudinal ligament ossification. We report a case of 73 years-old woman experiencing mild cervical myeloradiculopathy caused by C6-C7 C-OLF compression and coexistence of DISH at cervico-thoracic level. A brief technical note about intraoperative management of C-OLF has also been described. RESULT: Our research found 81 previous reported case of C-OLF. The coexistence of Posterior longitudinal ligament ossification has been reported in 21.3% of C-OLF case. Conversely, we reported the first case describing the association between DISH and C-OLF. Posterior surgical decompression is the only useful treatment providing good long-term functional outcome. Instrumentation should be tailored according to pre-operative findings. CONCLUSIONS: C-OLF is a rare source of myeloradiculopathy and it may coexists with DISH probably due to alteration in the cervical mechanical stress and tendency of bone formation in patients harboring coexistent ligament ossifications. According to our result, skip en-bloc microsurgical laminectomy is safe and less invasive method to avoid complication and to provide optimal cervical spinal cord and nerve decompression avoiding CSF-leak.

RESUMO

Six cohorts of the silver-stripe round herring Spratelloides gracilis, a fast-growing and short-lived tropical clupeid, were collected as juveniles and then as adults during austral summers from November to February in 1998-1999 and 1999-2000, using light traps in the Dampier Archipelago, Western Australia. Otolith analysis allowed backcalculation of size and growth rate at age to examine the relative influences of selective mortality and water temperature on early growth. Negative size-selective mortality and growth-selective mortality between the juvenile and the adult stages was found only in the cohort that was the smallest and slowest growing in the period immediately following hatching. Selective mortality preferentially removed members of this cohort that were smaller from age 0 to 15 days, and slower growing from 0 to 10 days, resulting in an elevation of size at age to, or even above, that of cohorts that had not undergone this process. Size and growth rate at 5 day age intervals in the first 20 days after hatching differed among cohorts within and between summers and were strongly and positively correlated (r(2)= 0.61-0.83) with water temperature.

RESUMO

Swordfish (Xiphias gladius L., 1758) is an apex predator, highly migratory meso-pelagic fish widely distributed in the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean. As top predators, this fish may be the end reservoir of the bioaccumulation of trace elements in a food chain because they occupy higher trophic levels and are an important food source, causing them to be potentially hazardous to consume. This study aims to investigate the concentration of 18 trace elements of Swordfish, caught in the Mediterranean Sea and to discuss human exposure risks. The mean element levels in the fish muscles were clearly below the maximum allowable concentrations established by International food safety regulations. The data suggested that the risk is minor and acceptable for human health. The findings of this study amplify the scarce database on contaminants available, especially new data on "emerging elements", for this species from the Mediterranean Sea.

RESUMO

A measurement of the signal noise was carried out with a shot-per-shot lidar. This system was operated in the UV spectral region for ozone profiling in the low troposphere. We report on important discrepancies between our results and the estimations based on the assumptions commonly supporting the numerical modeling of lidar experiments.

RESUMO

Characteristic chromosome abnormalities and karyotype profiles are emerging for the soft tissue tumors. The notable findings are summarized in the Table 1. Within the broad range of solid tumors, it is certainly the soft tissue tumors in which the most spectacular success has occurred with regard to neoplasia-associated chromosome abnormalities. Cytogenetic studies of soft tissue tumors have been encouraged by the early and growing supporting interest of pathologists and clinicians concerned with soft tissue tumors. However, when one considers the variety of types and subtypes of benign and malignant soft tissue tumors, the number that has been so far characterized by a specific chromosome change is still very small. But, as we attempt to demonstrate in this report, these data should be viewed as paradigms for the importance of cytogenetic investigations in solid tumors. Cytogenetic studies of solid tumors are of more than clinical interest. Cytogenetic studies allow molecular investigations of the chromosomal breakpoints. They allow the search to proceed for genes involved in the chromosomal changes, providing a better knowledge of the malignant transformation process. In addition, the fruits of the combined efforts in cytogenetic and molecular technologies, from which has come "molecular cytogenetics," will let us recognize more conveniently, more quickly and, hopefully, less expensively the well-characterized diagnostic chromosome markers in tumor cells. Thus, we may be able to reach the goal of incorporating cytogenetics into standard diagnostic procedures for solid tumors, as has been achieved with hematological malignancies. Molecular cytogenetics including fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) technology promises to bring soft tissue tumor cytogenetics into regular diagnostic armamentaria and concurrently speed research into the basis of soft tissue tumors.

RESUMO

From lidar signals detected with a shot per shot differential absorption lidar instrument tuned for tropospheric ozone measurements and recording each individual return, we reconstruct histograms of their sampled values for each channel of our digitizers. The analysis of their shape permits the correction of our measurements for experimental biases. In particular, a negative correlation is found between the skew of the histograms and the intensity of the backscattered light. The skew comes from a tail at high sampled values, interpreted as due to a raise of the relative contribution to the signal of a signal-induced noise when this intensity diminishes. By fitting a Gaussian function to the histograms without considering their tails, we calculate average signals unbiased by the corresponding noise. This approach allows us to increase the range of our ozone profiles, up to as much as double it in some cases.

RESUMO

The consistent involvement of the region 12q13-q15 in numerous human tumors speaks in favor of the presence of genes that may contribute to oncogenesis. Mapping genes within this region of chromosome 12 is a necessary step toward the identification of those that play a role in this process. We have undertaken a multiplex analysis using translocation breakpoint mapping to order from the centromere to the telomere a series of 24 loci from the region 12q12-q22. Thirteen adipose tissue tumors with seven different chromosome changes involving the long arm of chromosome 12 (12q) were used. Since most of these loci are genes or anonymous DNA segments largely available to the scientific community, this map should be useful for investigation of genetic disorders associated with chromosome 12q. While these breakpoints were used as natural landmarks to order groups of loci, this work has positioned them more accurately, leading to a better chromosomal definition of the translocations than the one derived from standard cytogenetic studies.

RESUMO

714 pneumococcus were listed from 14 laboratories between the 1 June 1997 and the 31 May 1998. Data capture was done on Epi info software and concerned age, file number, consultation/hospitalization, sample type, susceptibility to oxacilline (5 micrograms), the results of the E-test for penicillin G, amoxicillin, cefotaxime and the results of the routine disk diffusion susceptibility method. Strains with reduced susceptibility to penicillin G (PRSP) were collected by the coordinating center to perform MICs by the reference method of agar dilution and serotyping. Over 714 strains, 45.7% of the samples originated from lungs, followed by 22% for blood samples, 14% for ear pus and 2.3% for CSF. 34% of the patients were female. 36.7% were children under 16 (57.8% PRSP) and 63.3% were adults (41% PRSP). 338 strains (47.3%) were determined as PRSP and 293 of them were studied by the coordinating center. 81 of the 293 PRSP (27.7%) were resistant et 212 (72.3%) were intermediate to penicillin G. 81% of the PRSP studied had a CMI value for penicillin G within +/- 1 log2 dilution. 20 strains of PRSP were resistant for amoxicillin (6.8% of the PRSP) and two (0.7% of the PRSP) for cefotaxime. 289 serotyping were done, most met serotypes were 23 (25%), 14 (23%). The least met was 15 (2.4%). These results let assess the epidemiology of pneumococcus in our region.
