RESUMO

Chronic pain and recurrence rates are the main challenge in modern inguinal hernia surgery. Several trials have investigated the role of self-adhesive mesh repair for inguinal hernia, with special attention to the incidence of chronic postoperative inguinal pain and recurrence. The purpose of our study was to retrospectively evaluate the early and long-term results using a self-gripping mesh (Parietex Progrip® , Covidien) in our institution. A total of 204 patients, mean age 50.3 standard deviation (SD) 15.3, was included in the study. The repair was performed under local anaesthesia in 159 (78%) cases and locoregional anaesthesia in remaining 45 (22%). Mean operative time was 39 ± 20 minutes. The time for self-gripping mesh placement ranged from 5 to 9 minutes (mean 7 ± 2 minutes). There were no intraoperative complications. Clinical follow-up was performed at 1 month, 1 year and 2 years and consisted in the evaluation of complications, discomfort/pain and recurrence. One case of cutaneous infection and three cases of seroma were observed at one-month follow-up and were all treated conservatively. 8 patients were lost at one year follow-up, and another 4 were lost at 2 years. 3 patients died for other causes during follow-up. At 1 year and 2 years follow-up no cases of seroma, testicular complications or mesh infection were observed. Two cases of recurrence were recorded at 2 years follow up. No patient reported VAS score > 2 at one month, 1 year and 2 years follow-up. There were no readmissions, systemic complications or death during 2 years follow-up. Lichtenstein open repair using Parietex Progrip® mesh is a simple, rapid, effective and safe method for inguinal hernia repair. The main advantage of self-fixing mesh is the reduced operative time. A suturless fixation seems to prevent the development of postoperative chronic pain, without increasing recurrence rate in the majority of the trials.

RESUMO

In this paper, we show how graphene can be utilized as a nanoscopic probe in order to characterize local opto-mechanical forces generated within photosensitive azobenzene containing polymer films. Upon irradiation with light interference patterns, photosensitive films deform according to the spatial intensity variation, leading to the formation of periodic topographies such as surface relief gratings (SRG). The mechanical driving forces inscribing a pattern into the films are supposedly fairly large, because the deformation takes place without photofluidization; the polymer is in a glassy state throughout. However, until now there has been no attempt to characterize these forces by any means. The challenge here is that the forces vary locally on a nanometer scale. Here, we propose to use Raman analysis of the stretching of the graphene layer adsorbed on top of polymer film under deformation in order to probe the strength of the material transport spatially resolved. With the well-known mechanical properties of graphene, we can obtain lower bounds on the forces acting within the film. Upon the basis of our experimental results, we can deduce that the internal pressure in the film due to grating formation can exceed 1 GPa. The graphene-based nanoscopic gauge opens new possibilities to characterize opto-mechanical forces generated within photosensitive polymer films.

RESUMO

Adhesion molecules, including ICAM-1, are an important factor in allergic inflammation caused by inhalant allergens, but there are no studies investigating their possible role in Hymenoptera venom allergy (HVA). We measured the level of ICAM-1 in 13 venom-allergic patients before and after ultra-rush venom immunotherapy (VIT). Eight patients were treated by yellow jacket venom and 5 were treated by honeybee venom. Serum ICAM-1 levels were assayed by an immunoenzymatic method, with a detection limit of 0.35 ng/ml. The mean level of ICAM-1 changed from 316.4±78.2 ng/ml before VIT to 294.7±77.9 after VIT. This difference was statistically significant (p = 0.019). These findings show that in patients with HVA there is an over-expression of ICAM-1, and that ultra-rush VIT significantly decreases ICAM-1 levels. It is likely that the known ability of VIT to correct the imbalance in T lymphocytes subpopulations and in the associated production of cytokines may account for this observation. In fact, such cytokines include IL-4 and TNF-alpha, that up-regulate adhesion molecules.

RESUMO

The current bottleneck to carbon nanotubes (CNT) application in composite materials field consists in the difficulty of dispersing them in solvents. As a result of strong van der Waals interactions, as produced CNTs are tightly bundled in ropes of several tubes, rendering the carbon-powder insoluble in aqueous and organic liquids and thus unprocessable. The interest in applications that require water-soluble CNTs is growing and much attention is being directed to the study of surfactant aqueous solutions. In a typical dispersion procedure, after the surfactant has been adsorbed on the nanotube surface by hydrophobic or pi-pi interactions, ultrasonication helps nanotubes debundling, providing a mechanical energy able to overcome van der Waals interactions in CNT bundles. The electrostatic repulsion between surfactant polar heads that remain in solution allows the colloidal stability. In this work the dispersibility of HiPCO Single Walled Carbon Nanotubes (SWNT) in different surfactant solutions has been evaluated by using UV-vis and Raman spectroscopies. UV absorbance as well as intensity of SWNTs characteristic Raman bands have been studied as a function of sonication time for each type of surfactant. Moreover the surface morphology of SWNTs films obtained by solutions drying has been observed by using Scanning Electron and Atomic Force Microscopies.

RESUMO

Single-molecule stretching experiments on DNA, RNA, and other biological macromolecules opened up the possibility of an impressive progress in many fields of life and medical sciences. The reliability of such experiments may be crucially limited by the possibility of determining the influence of the apparatus on the experimental outputs. Here we deduce a model that let us analytically evaluate such influence, fundamental for the interpretation of Single Molecule Force Spectroscopy experiments and intermolecular interactions phenomena. As we show, our model is coherent with previous numerical results and quantitively reproduce AFM experimental tests on titin macromolecules and P-selectin with variable probe stiffnesses.

RESUMO

AIM: For long time the traditional surgical treatment for lower limb varicose veins has been high ligation of sapheno-femoral junction and stripping of great saphenous vein. Surgery, however, has been frustrated by postoperative pains, discomfort and recurrences so that it has been challenged by minimally invasive endovenous techniques such as laser treatment and radiofrequency ablation. The aim of the article is to assess the feasibility of a combined approach to greater saphenous vein reflux: high ligation of sapheno-femoral junction and thermal treatment of the great saphenous vein. METHODS: A retrospective analysis on 95 patients treated with high ligation and thermal ablation at our institution was performed, assessing duration of surgery, post-operative pain and analgesics requirements, early complications and resumption of activities. RESULTS: Two patients (5,4%), in the laser group experienced skin burns in the course of the GSV. Moderate ecchymosis, by laser fibre-Romainduced perforation of the vein wall, were observed in another two patients (5.4%). Four limbs (10.8%) in the EVLT group developed transient paraesthesias. Analgesic requirement on POD 3 was nil for RFA group; conversely half of the EVLT patients did take analgesics, either 2 or 3 tabs were required. On POD 7, the patients of RFA group continued to not ask for any analgesics, but the same half of the patients in EVLT group still needed 1-2 tabs to carry out their normal activities smoothly. On POD 15, no patient did require analgesics. Resumption of routine activities was earlier for RFA group patients than for those in the EVLT group. The RFA group resumed their activities within 3 days, whereas EVLT group in 8-9 days. High ligation of the SFJ didn't add too much time or morbidities. CONCLUSION: High ligation of saphenous femoral arc combined with catheter delivered thermal energies for saphenous ablation, even when combined with high ligation of saphenous femoral arc, demonstrated to be minimally invasive, easy to learn and easy to perform, with early resumption and return to normal activity. EVLT achieved similar results to RFA and both techniques were considered equally effective and safe; the results we obtained were not statistically significant but RFA showed less pain, ecchymosis and haematomas, as well as provided better short-term quality of life.

RESUMO

This retrospective study, of a single surgeon's experience, evaluates the role of intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM) for total thyroidectomy, in a low-volume district general hospital. 128 patients with normal preoperative vocal fold function underwent thyroid surgery with routine use of nerve monitoring. Patients were followed for 6 months after surgery, and postoperative Romanerve function was determined by fiberoptic laryngoscopy. One (0,8%) patient was found to have a unilateral vocal fold paralysis, but after 6 months this patient had regained vocal fold motion. The technique of intraoperative neuromonitoring in thyroid surgery is safe and reliable in excluding postoperative recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy; it has high accuracy, specificity, sensitivity and negative predictive value. Neuromonitoring is useful to identify the recurrent laryngeal nerve and it can be a useful adjunctive technique for reassuring surgeons of the functional integrity of the nerve. Its application can be particularly recommended for low-volume thyroid operation centres.

RESUMO

We retrospectively collected data of 100 consecutives elective Longo's procedures for third- and fourth-degree simptomatic haemorroids, classified ASA grade I and II. All patients stayed overnight, because discharge was scheduled the day after the operation. 98 were discharged the day after the operation. Two patients were not discharged the day after because mild and severe bleeding respectively occurred during the first night after the operation which settled conservatively. All the patients were discharged on oral NSAID and stool softeners. None required rehospitalisation. Our retrospective study, pointing out that, in general patients did not require active intervention on the first postoperative night, represents an encouragement to introduce day-case stapled procedure for haemorroids.

RESUMO

In recent years, climate change has been influenced by air pollution, and this destructive combination has justifiably sounded an alarm for nations and many institutional bodies worldwide. Official reports state that the emission of greenhouse gases produced by human activity are growing, and consequently also the average temperature. The World Health Organization (WHO) believes that health effects expected in the future due to climate change will be dramatic, and has invited international groups to investigate potential remedies. A task force has been established by the Italian Society of Allergology, Asthma and Clinical Immunology (SIAAIC), with the aim to actively work on correlation between pollution and climate change. The Task Force provided prevention tools to suggest city leaders how to improve the health conditions of allergic people in public urban parks. The "Allergy Safe Tree Decalogue" suggests the preparation and maintenance of public low allergy-impact greenery. Through the Twinning ARIA project, the Division for the Promotion and Enhancement of Health Innovation Programs of Campania Region (Italy), sought to promote the implementation of the project in the regional Health System. The main objective will be to investigate the current use and usefulness of mobile phone Apps in the management of allergic respiratory disease, through Mobile Airways Sentinel networK (MASK), the Phase 3 of the ARIA initiative, based on the freely available MASK App (the Allergy Diary, Android and iOS platforms). The effects of these prevention activities will be registered and compared with monitoring efforts thanks to the Aerobiology Units, located throughout the Campania area. A joint effort between researchers and public administrations for the implementation of prevention plans coherently with the two models proposed in a specific area, i.e. the Decalogue for public administrations and the MASK Allergy Diary app for individual patients suffering from allergy, will be implemented as a pilot.

RESUMO

Any inguinal hernia containing the vermiform appendix is called Amyand's hernia. Amyand hernias are very rare and even rarer is the association of Amyand hernia with acute appendicitis. Due to the rarity of this entity, it constitutes a challenging case in terms of diagnosis and treatment. The surgical management is not yet standardized and there are no clear guidelines. There are some controversies regarding whether to perform an appendectomy if appendix appears normal or whether mesh can be used for the hernia repair if appendectomy is performed. We describe a case of Amyand hernia in a 90-year old man with acute appendicitis and we review current literature regarding surgical strategy.

RESUMO

We analyze a wide gravity low in the Campania Active Volcanic Area and interpret it by a large and deep source distribution of partially molten, low-density material from about 8 to 30 km depth. Given the complex spatial-temporal distribution of explosive volcanism in the area, we model the gravity data consistently with several volcanological and petrological constraints. We propose two possible models: one accounts for the coexistence, within the lower/intermediate crust, of large amounts of melts and cumulates besides country rocks. It implies a layered distribution of densities and, thus, a variation with depth of percentages of silicate liquids, cumulates and country rocks. The other reflects a fractal density distribution, based on the scaling exponent estimated from the gravity data. According to this model, the gravity low would be related to a distribution of melt pockets within solid rocks. Both density distributions account for the available volcanological and seismic constraints and can be considered as end-members of possible models compatible with gravity data. Such results agree with the general views about the roots of large areas of ignimbritic volcanism worldwide. Given the prolonged history of magmatism in the Campania area since Pliocene times, we interpret the detected low-density body as a developing batholith.

RESUMO

Serum IgE levels are high in adults and children with HIV-1 infection and could be a marker of poor prognosis. Allergic reactions and adverse reactions to drugs also tend to increase in HIV-1-infected individuals. An imbalance between a "T(H)1-like" and a "T(H)2-like" cytokine profile has been documented in HIV-1 infection. We have demonstrated that HIV-1 gp 120 from different clades is a stimulus for histamine and cytokine (IL-4 and IL-13) release from basophils. Gp 120 acts as a viral superantigen, interacting with the V(H)3 region of IgE to induce mediator release from human Fc epsilonRI+ cells. Human basophils and mast cells express the chemokine receptor CCR3, which binds the chemokines eotaxin and RANTES. By interacting with the CCR3 receptor on Fc epsilonRI+ cells, HIV-I Tat protein is a potent chemoattractant for human basophils and lung mast cells. Preincubation of basophils with Tat protein upregulates mRNA CCR3 and the surface expression of this chemokine receptor. Tat also induces IL-4 and IL-13 release from basophils. Extracellular Tat can influence the directional migration of human Fc epsilonRI+ cells, the expression of chemokine receptor CCR3, and the release of T(H)2 cytokines. Our results indicate two novel mechanisms by which two HIV-1 proteins, gp120 and Tat, trigger the release of cytokines critical for T(H)2 polarization from human Fc epsilonRI+ cells.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the mechanism whereby HIV-1 envelope glycoprotein gp120 from four different isolates obtained in three different countries induces proinflammatory mediator release from normal human basophils. METHODS: Histamine, cysteinyl leukotriene C4 (LTC4) and interleukin 4 (IL-4) release into the supernatant was measured in gp120-stimulated peripheral blood basophils from HIV-1 and HIV-2 negative subjects. RESULTS: The HIV glycoprotein was a potent stimulus for release of these mediators in basophils purified from donors negative for HIV-1 and HIV-2. There was also a correlation (r = 0.58; P < 0.01) between the maximum IL-4 release from basophils induced by gp120 and by anti-IgE. Basophils from which IgE had been dissociated by brief exposure to lactic acid no longer released histamine in response to gp120 and anti-IgE. Anti-IgE specifically desensitized basophils to a subsequent challenge with anti-IgE and gp120. Human monoclonal IgM carrying the VH3 domain, but not that carrying the VH6 domain, inhibited gp120-induced secretion of histamine from basophils in a concentration-dependent manner. Synthetic peptides identical to regions distant from the N- and C-termini of gp120MN inhibited its activating capacity. CONCLUSIONS: gp120 acts as a viral superantigen interacting with the VH3 domain of IgE to induce the release of preformed and de novo synthesized mediators from human cells carrying the Fc fragment Fc epsilonRI receptor.

RESUMO

The present study compared the adaptation of cancer pain patients and chronic non-cancer pain patients. Differences between samples of cancer pain patients with and without metastatic disease were also examined. Cancer pain patients reported comparable levels of pain severity to non-cancer chronic pain patients; however, pain due to cancer was associated with higher levels of perceived disability (t(250) = 2.97, P < 0.004) and lower degree of activity (t(286) = 2.45, P < 0.04). The patients with cancer pain, particularly those with metastatic disease, reported significantly higher levels of support and solicitous behaviors from significant others, compared to non-cancer chronic pain patients. The majority of the cancer patients, both with (81%) and without (84%) metastatic disease as well as non-cancer chronic pain patients (85%), could be classified into one of three psychosocial subgroups that had been previously identified with non-cancer chronic pain patients: 'dysfunctional' (high levels of pain, perceived interference, affective distress and low levels of perceived control and activity), 'interpersonally distressed' (high levels of affective distress, negative responses from significant others and low levels of perceived support) and 'adaptive copers' (low levels of interference and affective distress, high levels of perceived control and activity). The distribution of the profiles was significantly different across groups (chi2(4) = 12.79, P < 0.02). However, within each profile. the response patterns were highly comparable across groups. Thus, contrary to the suggestions of some authors, cancer pain and non-cancer chronic pain patients share many features in common. Furthermore, the heterogeneity of psychosocial adaptation to pain within each patient group suggests the importance of psychological assessment in determining the pain management plan.

RESUMO

Twenty-three patients with chronic myelogenous leukemia in early chronic phase (ECP) and not previously treated with alpha-interferon (IFN-alpha) (10 patients), in ECP but pretreated with IFN-alpha (<12 months) (seven patients) and in late chronic phase (LCP) pretreated with IFN-alpha (>12 months) (six patients) underwent autografting with Philadelphia (Ph) chromosome-negative blood progenitor cells (BPCs) (20 patients), or partially/totally Ph-positive BPCs (three patients), previously mobilized during the early phase of recovery after aplasia induced by intensive chemotherapy. The conditioning regimen consisted of high-dose chemotherapy alone or followed by total body irradiation (TBI). Recombinant G-CSF was given after BPCs infusion on day +8. All patients in ECP not pretreated with IFN-alpha are alive and five of them are Ph-negative in the marrow after autografting. Six of seven patients autografted with Ph-negative BPCs in the group of ECP pretreated with IFN-alpha (<12 months) are alive and two of them are still Ph-negative in the marrow. In the same group, the only patient transplanted with partially Ph-positive BPCs, died of blastic transformation 2 months after reinfusion. Three patients (two patients autografted with Ph-negative BPCs and one patient with Ph-positive BPC) in the group of LCP pretreated with IFN-alpha >12 months are alive but Ph-positive after autografting. The other three patients of the same group died of procedure-related toxicity (two patients) and blastic transformation (one patient). Seventeen patients (10/10 ECP not pretreated with IFN-alpha; 5/7 ECP pretreated with IFN-alpha and 2/6 LCP pretreated with IFN-alpha) of 23 autografted patients were treated with IFN-alpha +/- IL-2. Toxicities after autografting were mostly related to myelosuppression, particularly thrombocytopenia. All patients of the two groups pretreated with IFN-alpha developed febrile episodes during the aplastic phase following BPCs reinfusion. No patient autografted in ECP and those not pretreated with IFN-alpha developed febrile episodes. This is also probably due to the use of i.v. antibiotic and antimicotic prophylaxis when neutrophils were < or = 1 x 10(9)/l after autografting. Greater toxicity was observed in patients pretreated with IFN-alpha, being lethal in two cases in LCF. In conclusion, the "in vivo' manipulation approach employed in our institution is a safe procedure and it results in a high collection of Ph-negative cells in the blood if the cells are harvested: (1) in early chronic phase; (2) in early phase of recovery after chemotherapy-inducing aplasia; (3) in patients not extensively pretreated with IFN-alpha. The data presented here have shown encouraging trends in chronic phase of CML and offer new perspective for patients without an HLA-identical donor or for patients who do not respond to IFN-alpha.

RESUMO

The present study investigated the relationship between depression and pain description among cancer and chronic non-cancer pain patients in a large outpatient sample. Participants consisted of 312 patients (158 men and 154 women) attending a pain management clinic at a comprehensive cancer institute. Sixty-one percent of the patients (190/312) were experiencing pain related to cancer and 39% (122/312) were experiencing chronic nonmalignant pain. Multivariate analyses of covariance were used to assess differences in the sensory and affective indices of the McGill Pain Questionnaire (MPQ) associated with depression and type of pain. Current pain intensity was the covariate. The results indicated that the MPQ affective and sensory intensity scales did not significantly differ among patients with cancer and chronic non-cancer pain. There were also no significant differences in the percentage of affective and sensory pain descriptors chosen by these patients. However, depression significantly influenced MPQ pain description. Depressed patients with pain scored higher on the affective pain intensity dimension of the MPQ than non-depressed patients with pain (P < 0.001). Depressed patients also chose more affective pain descriptors than non-depressed patients (P < 0.001). Chi-square analyses revealed that depressed and non-depressed pain patients made significantly different choices on four of the five MPQ affective adjective lists. There were no differences in the sensory pain index or the percentage of sensory pain descriptors based on depression. These findings are discussed in terms of their clinical implications and their relationship to the existing literature.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study is to test the efficacy of gemcitabine as single agent therapy in advanced non-small cell lung cancer in the elderly by the evaluation of the clinical response, the survival increase and the quality of life. METHODS: Nineteen patients (age >65 years) with a PS >2, bearing an advanced non-small cell lung cancer (IIIb-IV) not treated with chemotherapy before, were charged between December 1996 and December 1998. Sixteen patients were treated with gemcitabine at the dose of 1000 mg/mq 1-8-15 every 28 days. CT scan, X-rays and skeletal scintigraphy were used in the evaluation of the therapeutic response. The toxicity was estimated by following WHO indexes. The quality of life and the modification of the specific symptoms were estimated by particular tests (Spitzer Index, IADL, EORTC-LC13). RESULTS: One complete response (6%), 4 partial responses (25%), 7 cases of illness stabilization (43%), 4 cases of illness progression, were shown. One year of survival was found in 43% of cases with a 14 week of therapeutic response and a global survival ratio of 12.4 weeks. Only 2 cases (12.5) of medium grade G3-leucopenia were found. All patients improved their quality of life (IADL and Spitzer indexes) with reduction of symptoms, (EORTC-LC13) and increase of self-agin and relationships. CONCLUSIONS: The effectiveness of gemcitabine as single agent therapy as not yet been tested due to the scanty number of patients, nevertheless it must be considered in relation to the improvement of the patient s quality of life.

RESUMO

The increasing need of collecting high quality blood components and of improving the overall productivity of a blood centre requires the utilisation of a new innovative process that combines high speed collection with an automated process and blood component tailoring to fit individual patient requirements. We collected dosed Red Blood Cell (dRBC) units on 64 donors, eligible as regular donors on the Gambro BCT TRIMA using the dRBC collection protocol. The collection target was set to 180 ml packed Red Blood Cells (pRBCs) in 225 ml total collection volume (n = 7), or 300 ml pRBCs in 375 ml total collection volume (n = 33) or 360 ml in 450 ml (n = 24), depending on donor's hematological profile and blood volemia. Saline was infused as the replacement fluid at a 120%) collection:infusion ratio. Donor per cent hematocrit was (mean +/- S.D.) 43.7 +/- 4.0% and TBV = 4.99 +/- 0.69 1. The procedures yielded 100 +/- 6% of predicted yield, with a hematocrit of 78.2 +/- 6.6% in 29 +/- 3 min. Hb content was 99.9 +/- 21.8 in all procedures, or 61.5-94.4-118.6 g in the three groups, respectively. After the addition of the SAG-M storage solution, the hematocrit was 56.3 +/- 6.2%. No adverse reactions have been reported by the donors and all pPRBC units were transfused to patients without any transfusion reaction being reported by clinicians. The dRBC protocol is well tolerated by donors without any side effects, other than normal effects of regular blood donation. Higher pRBC productivity can be reached with a safe and automated process in conjunction with a high and consistent product quality easily matching the donor collection criteria and pRBC unit standards. Tailoring of pRBC units can result in an improved patient transfusion support.

RESUMO

Efforts to improve the purity of blood products have mainly focused on reducing white blood cell (WBC) levels in cellular blood products. Relatively little attention has been given to the cellular purity of plasma. We evaluated plasma units collected on six apheresis systems: Dideco Excel, Haemonetics-MCS+, Fresenius-AS-Tech 204, Baxter-Amicus, Gambro BCT COBE Spectra and Gambro BCT-Trima. Collected plasma volumes averaged 300-350 ml for the various systems. Plasma samples were analyzed for platelet (PLT) content (Technicon H3, Bayer) and residual WBC (Imagn 2000). Results are given below. Platelet levels were consistently low for MCS+, COBE Spectra and Trima (all <50 x 10(3) microl(-1)), and were highest with AS204. Residual WBC levels were relatively low in all systems except MCS+. Extremely low levels were observed in Trima plasma. All of the Trima and Spectra units contained <1 x 10(6) WBC per product. With Excel, AS-Tech 204 and Amicus, 1 to 2 units were found to have >1 x 10(6) WBC, while almost all units from MCS+ exceeded this limit. Different levels of plasma purity were obtained with different apheresis systems. The Gambro BCT COBE Spectra and Trima systems were found to achieve consistently low levels of both platelets and WBC.

RESUMO

The last five years have been characterized by the presentation of new cell separators the main task of which is the collection of high yield-high quality platelets. The CS3000 is an old apparatus which has undergone rejuvenation to sustain the assault of its new competitors. The CS3000 Plus Omnix system is the latest version to be offered along with a combination of TNX-6 separation/PLT30 collection chambers for optimal platelet collection. In this paper we present our results with this apparatus and configuration after its adaptation to the collection and storage of platelets in a non-plasma medium, the Baxter Plasma-Lyte A. After separation the platelet product (PC) was left in the collection chamber and resuspended with 200 ml of Plasma-Lyte A instead of being resuspended in autologous plasma as usual. Plasma was collected in a separate bag (400-450 ml) for transfusion or fractionation purposes. PC quality was assessed by evaluating the platelet yield (4.17 +/- 1.8 x 10(11), and the WBC contamination (4.8 +/- 2.6 x 10(5)). The presence of platelet aggregates (platelet count after aggregate fixation with formalin/platelet count after disaggregation in EDTA), the aggregation induced by ADP, collagen and ristocetin, the hypotonic shock response and the stability of membrane glycoproteins (CD 62 - 62 - 63 - 36- 42b - 51) were measured in the preapheresis samples and in the PC immediately after, 24 and 72 hours after collection. These results were totally satisfactory as was the post-transfusion survival measured as corrected count increment in 10 transfusions to non refractory patients.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
