RESUMO

Maternal undernutrition during gestation affects the behaviour, metabolism, and sensitivity to stressors of the offspring. Shearing is a stressor that triggers physiological and behavioural changes and augments the thermoregulatory demands in sheep. The aim of this study was to compare the thermoregulatory, metabolic, and behavioural responses to spring shearing of aged ewes born to mothers who grazed different pasture allowances during gestation. Nineteen non-gestating six-year-old Corriedale ewes born to mothers who grazed two pasture allowances from 23 days before conception until 122 days of gestation were used. The pasture allowance offered to the mothers was high [HPA group; n = 11; 10-12 kg of dry matter (DM)/100 kg of body weight (BW)/day] or low [LPA group: n = 8; 5-8 kg of DM/100 kg of BW/day]. The adult offspring of both experimental groups were sheared during spring (Day 0), and remained outdoors, grazing natural grassland, and the behaviour, the surface temperature and the rectal temperature were recorded. Blood concentrations of albumin, total protein, glucose, and insulin were also determined. Data were compared with a mixed model. The LPA ewes had lower ear and nose maximum and minimum surface temperatures before shearing (P < 0.05). On Day 15, the average surface temperature of the vulva was lower in LPA than in HPA ewes (P < 0.05). After shearing, rumination frequency was greater in HPA than in LPA ewes (P = 0.01), and LPA ewes were observed more time standing up than HPA ewes (P < 0.0001). Insulin concentration tended to be greater in LPA than HPA ewes (P = 0.06). Maternal undernutrition during gestation modified the thermoregulatory responses and the acute behavioural changes after shearing in aged female offspring, whilst the metabolism was affected to a lesser degree. The long-term effects noticed in this study highlight the importance of providing proper nutrition to pregnant ewes.

RESUMO

The objective of this study was to compare the behavioural and immunological responses of twin lambs housed together with their siblings or not after weaning. The study was performed with seven multiparous Milchschaf ewes and their twin lambs (n = 14), which were weaned abruptly at 63 days of age and assigned to two experimental groups: (1) lambs that were housed together with their sibling after weaning (group GT, n = 6) and (2) lambs that were separated from their siblings and remained with other lambs from the same flock (group GS, n = 8). Before and after weaning, the distance between twins, the number of times in which the sibling was the closest lamb, the lambs' behaviours, and the average daily gain were recorded. The lambs' immune response was assessed with the phytohemagglutinin skin test after weaning. The closest lamb before weaning was the sibling in all cases (P < 0.0001 for all). The frequency in which GT lambs were observed closest from its twin increased on the day of weaning (P = 0.002). During the day of weaning, GT lambs vocalised and paced more than GS lambs (P = 0.001 and P = 0.01, respectively). Twenty-four h after the phytohemagglutinin injection, the skinfold thickness was greater in GS than GT lambs (P = 0.03). In conclusion, twin lambs housed together with their siblings were more stressed at weaning, displaying more intensive behavioural changes and a poorer immunological status than twin lambs housed separated from their siblings.

RESUMO

As during the early postpartum, ewes and their twin lambs have a weaker bond than ewes that rear single lambs; it might be expected that early artificial weaning would trigger less intense behavioral and physiological responses in mothers and their twin lambs than in mothers and their single lambs. The aim of this study was to compare the behavioral and physiological responses of ewes and their twin or single lambs to early weaning. The study was performed with 19 Saint Croix ewes: 10 bearing single lambs and nine bearing twins (data from only one sibling from each pair of twins was collected). Lambs were weaned at 43 days old. Body weight, stress-related behaviors, and blood protein concentrations were recorded in ewes and lambs before and after weaning. Single lambs were heavier and paced more frequently during the day of weaning than twin lambs (10.6 ± 0.4 vs 8.9 ± 0.4 kg; P = 0.007 and 4.1 ± 0.4 vs 1.5 ± 0.4%; P = 0.0003, respectively). In addition, ewes rearing single lambs paced and vocalized more than twin lambs' mothers the day of weaning (pacing, 42.4 ± 1.1 vs 20.0 ± 1.2%; P < 0.0001; vocalizations, 43.1 ± 2.6 vs 21.3 ± 2.7%; P < 0.0001). Litter size affected only ewes' albumin concentration, without other effects in protein concentrations in ewes or lambs. In conclusion, early weaning triggered stronger behavioral responses in mothers and their single lamb than in mothers and their twin lambs.

RESUMO

Two trials were carried out to determine: (a) if there is a positive relation between the frequency of aggressive interactions among female pampas deer and their position within the hierarchy (HI), (b) if short-term removal of the male triggers an increase in the frequency of aggression, and (c) if the magnitude of this increase is related to the individual rank position of the female. Each of 19 breeding groups comprised one adult male and from four to six adult females. The HI was determined for each female and all aggressive interactions were recorded. These were recorded while the male was present (i.e., all of Trial 1 and the "with male" period in Trial 2) and after removal of the male (i.e., the "without male" period in Trial 2). The individual percentage change in the frequency of aggressive interactions after male removal was calculated. In Trial 1 the HI, the frequency of different types of aggressive interaction and the total of aggressive interactions were positively related (all: p < .001; General Linear Mixed Model [GLMM]). In Trial 2, the frequency of total aggressive interactions increased after male removal (F(1, 27) = 3.5; p < .001; GLMM). The individual percentage changes in aggressive interaction between periods were positively related to HI (F(6, 24) = 2.56; p = .05; GLMM). For female pampas deer maintained in breeding groups, we conclude that the frequency of aggressive interactions increases within the hierarchy. Aggression also increases after the short-term removal of the male, mainly among females of higher social status.

RESUMO

In extensive sheep production systems, most of the lambs' deaths are related to their low vitality at birth, and an inadequate ewe-lamb bond, leading to lambs' hypothermia. In this context, the aim of this study was to determine if lambs' rectal and body surface temperatures were related to the ewes and lambs behaviours at birth and during a separation-reunion test performed 24-36 h later. Rectal and body surface temperatures of lambs were recorded using a digital thermometer and an infrared thermal camera, respectively, and were related to several ewe and lamb behaviours. Rectal temperature was inversely related to the duration of the first suckling at birth. As for lambs' weight, body surface temperatures recorded at birth were inversely related to its latency to suckle for the first time. Body surface temperatures recorded during a separation-reunion test were positively related to the ewe-lamb distance during it. Body surface temperature recorded at birth was negatively related to behaviours recorded during the separation-reunion test, such as the number of lamb vocalizations, the ewe-lamb distance and the latency to suckle after the ewe-lamb separation. Body surface temperatures were greater after the separation-reunion test than at birth. We concluded that lambs' body surface temperatures seem to be indicators of the lambs' vitality at birth and of the strength of the ewe-lamb bond measured one day after birth.

RESUMO

Male homosexual behavior is observed in many ruminant species; seasonality and isolation from females may affect the display of male-male sexual behavior. Our objectives were to determine whether: 1) homosexual behavior has a seasonal pattern in male goats (Capra hircus); 2) isolation from female goats influences the frequency of the display of homosexual behavior; and 3) the frequency of homosexual behaviors is related to testosterone concentration. Bucks were housed in a pen adjacent to another pen with 3 estrous goats (FC group) or in complete isolation from females (IF group). Homosexual behaviors and testosterone concentrations were recorded in October, December, February and May. Frequencies of penile display and flehmen increased in May and were observed more frequently in the IF than in the FC group. Ano-genital sniffing was more frequent in February and May and was more frequent in IF than in FC bucks. Lateral approaches were more frequent in May, in which period this was more frequently observed in IF bucks. Mount attempts and mounts were only observed in IF bucks. Testosterone concentrations increased from December to February and decreased in May, although they were still greater than in October and December. In May IF bucks had greater testosterone concentrations than FC bucks. Testosterone concentrations were only related to the number of lateral approaches in IF bucks in December. In conclusion, homosexual behavior was more frequent during the late breeding season than during the early and the non-breeding seasons, and in males isolated from females than in males housed near estrous females. Testosterone concentrations appear to be unrelated to homosexual behavior.

RESUMO

Fetal programming by subnutrition affects offspring's behaviour, metabolism, and sensitivity to stressors in sheep. The objective was to determine the stress response of ewes born to mothers nutritionally restricted during gestation to social isolation followed by exposure to a novel object. Twenty-six-year-old Corriedale ewes born to mothers who grazed high or low pasture allowances (HPA and LPA groups) from 23 days before conception until 122 days of gestation were used. Ewes were individually isolated in a novel place for 10 min, and 5 min after its beginning, an orange ball was dropped into the test pen. The ewes' behaviours were recorded during the test. Blood proteins, glucose and cortisol concentrations, heart and respiratory rates and rectal and surface temperatures were determined. The number of times looking at the ball tended to be greater in HPA ewes than LPA (6.7 ± 1.0 vs 4.7 ± 0.8, P = 0.08). The LPA ewes had greater serum albumin concentration than HPA ewes (3.2 ± 0.1 g/dL vs 3.0 ± 0.1 g/dL, P = 0.02), regardless of the applied stressors. Overall, the nutritional treatments applied to ewes during their intrauterine development did not modify the stress responses to social isolation followed by exposure to a novel object.

RESUMO

In mammals, progesterone and estrogens affect the stress response. The study aimed to compare the physiological and behavioral responses to the social isolation of ewes during the estrus or luteal phase. Estrous and diestrous ewes (n = 10 and 8 respectively) were individually isolated in a novel place for 10 min. Ewes' behavior was recorded during the test. Cortisol, blood proteins and glucose concentrations, and the skin surface temperature were determined before and after the test. Cortisol increased immediately after the test ended (P = 0.02). Serum total protein (P = 0.02), globulin (P < 0.0001), and plasma glucose (P = 0.006) concentrations were greater in estrus than in the luteal phase. The abdominal skin surface temperature was greater during estrus than during the luteal phase (P = 0.02). Ewes in estrus spent more time standing up immobile than ewes in the luteal phase (P = 0.05). In conclusion, the physiological and behavioral responses changed according to the phase of the estrous cycle. These results highlight the need for future studies focusing on how reproductive status influences the stress response to different management practices in sheep.

RESUMO

Tibetan goats, Taihang goats, Jining grey goats, and Meigu goats are the representative indigenous goats in China, found in Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, Western pastoral area, Northern and Southern agricultural regions. Very few studies have conducted a comprehensive analysis of the genomic diversity and selection of these breeds. We genotyped 96 unrelated individuals, using goat 53 K Illumina BeadChip array, of the following goat breeds: Tibetan (TG), Taihang (THG), Jining grey (JGG), and Meigu (MGG). A total of 45 951 single nucleotide polymorphisms were filtered to estimate the genetic diversity and selection signatures. All breeds had a high proportion (over 95%) of polymorphic loci. The observed and excepted heterozygosity ranged from 0.338 (MGG) to 0.402 (JGG) and 0.339 (MGG) to 0.395 (JGG), respectively. Clustering analysis displayed a genetically distinct lineage for each breed, and their Fst were greater than 0.25, indicating that they had a higher genetic differentiation between groups. Furthermore, effective population size reduced in all four populations, indicating a loss of genetic diversity. In addition, runs of homozygosity were mainly distributed in 5-10 Mb. Lastly, we identified signature genes, which were closely related to high-altitude adaptation (ADIRF) and prolificity (CNTROB, SMC3, and PTEN). This study provides a valuable resource for future studies on genome-wide perspectives on the diversity and selection signatures of Chinese indigenous goats.

RESUMO

Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are key regulatory factors with vital functions in various biological activities. However, little has been reported concerning the genetic regulation of circRNAs during rumen development in goats. The aim of this study was to identify the genome-wide expression profiles of circRNAs in the rumen of goats during fetal development and before and after weaning. Histological morphology showed that from the fetal period (days 60 and 135 of gestation) to the prepuberal period (days 60 and 150 of age) the rumen papilla developed gradually, and the thickness of the rumen muscular layer increased. A total of 11,149 circRNAs were identified in the four development stages by RNA-sequencing. From this, 1,518 were differentially expressed circRNAs (DECs). Fifty-eight DECs were up-regulated from 60 to 135 days of gestation, and 93 from day 135 of pregnancy to 30 days after birth. A large proportion (598) of DECs were down-regulated from day 135 of gestation to 30 days after birth. The expression levels of six randomly selected circRNAs were validated by qPCR, and their back-splicing junction (BSJ) sites were also confirmed. Ontology and pathway analyses revealed that the parental genes of DECs were mainly involved in the signaling pathways related to cell proliferation and apoptosis. The interaction network of circRNAs with their target miRNAs showed its involvement in cell proliferation and apoptosis signaling pathways. In conclusion, we identified the genome-wide expression profiles of circRNAs in the rumen of goats during fetal development and before and after weaning. These results provide a basis for further study on the regulatory effect of circRNAs on the development of rumen tissues.

RESUMO

Early weaning and milk substitutes increase the incidence of diarrhea in young ruminants, which may modify their gut microbiota, metabolism, immunity, and health. The aim of the study was to determine if early weaning and milk substitutes affect the gut microbiota, metabolism, and immunological status of goat kids suffering from diarrhea. The 16S rRNA gene and metagenomic sequencing in feces and serum metabolomics of early-weaned and artificially reared goat kids suffering from diarrhea (DK group) and healthy goat kids reared by their mothers (HK group) were analyzed. The serum biochemistry and immunoglobulin concentration were also determined. Several probiotics, such as Streptococcus and Lactobacillus, were higher in the feces of the DK group than in feces of the HK group. Ruminococcus sp. was elevated in the feces of HKs, likely being a biomarker for goat health. Taking all the carbohydrate-active enzyme (CAZyme) families into consideration, 20 CAZyme families were different between the groups. Compared with the DK group, the relative quantity of glycoside hydrolases (GH) and glycosyltransferase (GT) families in the HK group decreased. GT70 was only identified in HK kids participating in the activity of ß-glucuronosyltransferase during the carbohydrate metabolism. Overall, 24 metabolites were different between the groups, which were mainly involved in protein digestion and absorption, cyanoamino acid metabolism, and cholesterol metabolism. The concentrations of immunoglobulins G and M were significantly lower in the DK than in the HK group. In conclusion, our study characterized the fecal microbiota, metabolism, and immunological status of early-weaned and artificially reared goat kids suffering from diarrhea.

RESUMO

The incidence of diarrhea in lambs is frequent in large-scale sheep farms, which greatly impacts the growth and health of lambs. The aim of this study was to assess the changes in serum biochemical and immunological parameters and gut microbiome composition in suckling lambs suffering from diarrhea or not, reared on an intensive commercial farm. We found a reduced diversity of intestinal bacteria in suckling lambs suffering from diarrhea. Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes were the dominant flora in both groups of lambs, while the Bacteroidetes decreased in diarrheic lambs, no changes were reported in Firmicutes. Compared with healthy lambs, the proportion of aerobic bacteria, facultative anaerobic bacteria, and stress tolerant bacteria increased in lambs suffering from diarrhea, while that of anaerobic bacteria and potentially pathogenic bacteria decreased slightly. In addition, the contents of total cholesterol, immunoglobulins (Ig) G, and IgM in the serum of lambs suffering from diarrhea were lower than those of healthy lambs. This study explored the association between diarrhea occurrence, intestinal microbial community structure, and metabolic and immunological status in Hu lambs.

RESUMO

The aims were to compare ewe-lamb behaviours between primiparous (PRI) and multiparous (MUL) undernourished grazing ewes at birth and at 3 months of age, and to determine if mothers' parity affects milk yield and composition, and lambs' body weight (BW). Food availability restricted the nutritional requirements from day 30 to day 143 of gestation. The MUL ewes had greater BW than the PRI during gestation, and their lambs tended to vocalize less frequently until their first suckle. PRI ewes both displayed a lower frequency of acceptance behaviours and, a greater number of high-pitched bleats toward the alien lamb than toward that of their own, but MUL did not. PRI ewes produced less milk than the MUL ewes. The heart rate was greater in lambs reared by MUL ewes than by PRI. Although PRI ewes had a lower BW during gestation, this difference was stable throughout and did not affect the establishment of the ewe-lamb bond neither at birth nor at 3 months postpartum. At least under nutritionally restricted conditions during gestation, inexperienced mothers appeared to have had a shorter sensitivity period of maternal responsiveness than that of experienced mothers.

RESUMO

Because intrauterine environment differs between twins and singletons, twin-born lambs are often studied when effects of fetal programming are evaluated. In sheep, fetal programming might have effects on reproductive physiology and behavior after sexual maturation. The aim of this study was to compare sperm output and sexual behavior in developing singleton- or twin-born lambs of similar body weight. Singleton lambs (n = 12) and twin (n = 9) male-male lambs were used. From 5.4 until 9.1 months of age, body weight, scrotal circumference (every 3-4 weeks), sexual behavior (every 14 days) and semen characteristics (every 28 days) were evaluated. In the third ejaculate, singleton lambs ejaculated a larger volume of semen than twins (P = 0.03). Considering a pool of the three ejaculates, twin lambs ejaculated semen with a greater sperm concentration than singleton lambs (P = 0.015). There was an interaction between group and time to the onset of courtship behavior (P = 0.02) and a tendency for an interaction in the number of mount attempts (P = 0.052). Singleton-born lambs, during the first evaluation period began courtship behavior earlier than twin-born lambs (P < 0.0001). In conclusion, there were only slight differences in semen and sexual behavior between male ram lambs born as singletons or twins with similar weight. Male ram lambs born as singletons initiated the courtship behavior earlier than twins during the first sexual behavioral evaluation period, ejaculated a larger volume of semen in the third consecutive ejaculate, and there was a lesser sperm concentration in the three ejaculates.

RESUMO

To determine the presence, quantity and distribution of androgen (AR) and oestrogen receptors (ER) in the antler velvet (AV), samples were collected from adult and yearling pampas deer males, as well as skin from the ventrolateral abdominal area (ASK). Samples were analysed with ligand-binding assays for AR and ER activity and processed for AR and ERß immunohistochemistry. There was more content of AR in adults than in yearling males (p = 0.02), as well as a category and type of tissue interaction (p = 0.03). There was more ER content in adults than in yearling males (p = 0.005) and in the AV than in the skin (p = 0.0001). The AR-positive score (PS) was greater in AV than in ASK in the surface stroma (p = 0.0007). In the intermediate epidermis, the AR PS was greater in adults than in yearling males (p = 0.04) and in the ASK than in the AV (p < 0.0001). There was a male category and type of tissue interaction for AR PS in the sebaceous glands (p = 0.014). The ERß PS in the surface stroma was greater in ASK than in AV (p = 0.004) and tended to be greater in yearling than in adult males (p = 0.093). The ERß PS in the intermediate epithelium and the sebaceous glands was greater in adults than in yearlings (p = 0.004 and p = 0.007, respectively). In conclusion, we reported for the first time the presence of AR and ER in the velvet skin of growing antlers in pampas deer males. Therefore, the velvet skin is sensitive to both androgens and oestrogens. Furthermore, the greater content of oestrogen receptors in the velvet of adult males suggests that adults are more sensitive to this hormone than yearlings, and thus, oestrogens have greater importance in velvet activity regulation in adult males.

RESUMO

Electroejaculation (EE) is frequently used to collect semen, but this procedure is both stressful and painful. In seasonal-breeding species the sensitivity to stressors might vary with season of the year when semen collection occurs, therefore, the present study was conducted to compare the responses when imposing the EE procedure, stress response to EE and fresh semen characteristics in goat bucks throughout the year. Semen was collected using EE from goat bucks once in autumn (mid-breeding season), winter (transition to the non-breeding season), spring (non-breeding season), and summer (beginning of the breeding season). The number of pulses applied during ejaculation was larger in the autumn and spring than winter and summer months. The number of vocalizations/pulse while bucks were ejaculating was greater in the summer than winter and spring months. The increase in heart rate was greater in spring than summer months. Cortisol concentration was least in the autumn, and concentration of creatine kinase (CK) was greatest in summer. Sperm mass motility was greater in autumn than spring months. Spermatozoa concentration, total number of spermatozoa ejaculated, motile spermatozoa ejaculated, and progressively motile spermatozoa were greater in the autumn and spring than in the winter and summer months. The bucks were less stressed by imposing EE procedures in the autumn, and buck responses were greater in the spring-summer period. Bucks had a greater incremental increase in serum CK and number of vocalizations in the summer months, indicating there was a greater muscular damage and quite likely pain associated with lesser semen quality.

RESUMO

The dams of gregarious animals must develop a close bond with their newborns to provide them with maternal care, including protection against predators, immunological transference, and nutrition. Even though lactation demands high energy expenditures, behaviors known as allonursing (the nursing of non-descendant infants) and allosuckling (suckling from any female other than the mother) have been reported in various species of wild or domestic, and terrestrial or aquatic animals. These behaviors seem to be elements of a multifactorial strategy, since reports suggest that they depend on the following: species, living conditions, social stability, and kinship relations, among other group factors. Despite their potential benefits, allonursing and allosuckling can place the health and welfare of both non-filial dams and alien offspring at risk, as it augments the probability of pathogen transmission. This review aims to analyze the biological and physiological foundations and bioenergetic costs of these behaviors, analyzing the individual and collective advantages and disadvantages for the dams' own offspring(s) and alien neonate(s). We also include information on the animal species in which these behaviors occur and their implications on animal welfare.

RESUMO

High progesterone concentrations reduce the stress responses in several mammals. Therefore, it may be expected that pregnant ewes have lower responses to stressors than anoestrous ewes. Our aims were to compare the stress response and the behavioural changes of pregnant and non-pregnant ewes sheared during winter. Two trials were with 20 were pregnant (group PR) and 17 non-pregnant ewes (group NP). In the first trial blood samples were collected immediately before and during the first 180 min after shearing, and cortisol, total protein, and albumin concentrations were measured, and globulin concentrations were calculated. In the second trial, the frequency in which each ewe was observed standing, lying down, walking and grazing were recorded from Day -3 to Day -1 (Day 0 = shearing), from Day 1 to Day 5, on Days 13 and 20-21 during 8 h/day. Scan observations were done every 10 min from 8:00 h to 12:00 h and from 14:00 h to 18:00 h (total = 50 recordings.day). Non-pregnant ewes had greater cortisol concentrations than PR ewes (P = .007). Non-pregnant ewes also had greater total protein concentrations than PR ewes (P = .029). Albumin concentration tended to be greater in NP than PR ewes (P = .064). Globulin concentration 30 min after shearing was greater in PR than in NP ewes (P = .047). Pregnant ewes were observed more frequently standing than NP ewes (P = .013). Non-pregnant ewes were observed more frequently lying down and walking than PR ewes (P = .039 and P = .009, respectively). Before shearing, on Day 2 and Day 4, NP ewes walked more frequently than P ewes (P = .007, P < .0001, P = .007 respectively). Pregnant ewes were observed grazing more frequently than NP ewes (P = .009). Pregnant ewes grazed more than NP ewes on Days 1 and 5 (P = .005 and P < .0001 respectively). Overall, we concluded that shearing was a strong stressor that provoked sustained changes in the behavioural pattern, physiological status and gregariousness intensity despite being or not pregnant. Some responses, as cortisol concentration, changes in the time walking and grazing and the decrease of the cohesiveness after shearing seem to be less pronounced in pregnant than in non-pregnant ewes.

RESUMO

There are different perspectives on whether there should be use of electroejaculation (EE) for semen collection because it can be stressful and painful for the males when this technique is imposed. In the present review it is examined 1) the effects of EE on animal welfare and semen quality in domestic and wild small ruminants, 2) benefits and limitations of administering anaesthetics and sedatives prior to EE, 3) advantages/disadvantages of transrectal ultrasonic-guided massage of the accessory sex glands (TUMASG) as an alternative to EE, and 4) benefits of administering hormones, such as oxytocin or PGF2α analogues (which stimulate the contractility of the male accessory sex glands), prior to EE and TUMASG. In general, the administration of anaesthetics, sedatives or hormones reduces the pain and stress caused by EE, and can improve sperm quality, but results may vary depending on the species. The use of anaesthetics is, however, not devoid of risks and pre-EE administration of sedatives, or oxytocin or PGF2α analogues, can aid sperm collection mitigate risks. The TUMASG is less stressful than EE, but its effectiveness varies greatly among species, and it can only be performed by trained personnel. Prior administration of the hormones may also result in a reduction in the period needed to induce ejaculation with use of TUMASG procedures.

RESUMO

Electroejaculation (EE) is a widely used semen collection technique; but, it is stressful and painful for the animals. Considering these concerns, it may be important to develop practices to decrease the negative implications of EE on animals. Oxytocin and prostaglandin-F2alpha (PGF2α) stimulate the contractions of the muscles of the male genital tract. Therefore, the aim of this study was to analyze the effectiveness of the administration of oxytocin and/or a PGF2α analogue (cloprostenol) to bucks in relation to their stress response and sperm parameters before semen collection by EE was performed. Semen was collected with EE from 12 Gabon bucks in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement (factors: with or without oxytocin, with or without cloprostenol). Each treatment was applied to different animals every 3 to 6 days, allowing all the animals to receive all the four treatments. The treatments applied to bucks before EE were as follows: 1) control (ConT), bucks received no hormonal treatment; 2) oxytocin (OxyT), bucks received 10 IU of oxytocin intramuscularly (IM) 30 s before beginning the EE; 3) PGF2α (PgT), bucks received 250 µg of cloprostenol IM 5 min before beginning the EE; and 4) oxytocin plus PGF2α (OxPgT), animals received treatment with both OxT and PgT. The number of electrical pulses, time length needed to achieve ejaculation, number of vocalizations, creatine kinase (CK) concentration and sperm parameters in goat bucks were recorded. The administration of cloprostenol and oxytocin before EE shortened the procedure and decreased the number of pulses and the pulse/voltage applied (P = 0.02 for all). This treatment also tended to decrease the number of vocalizations (P = 0.067). There were no treatment effects in the initial values; neither were there increases in heart rate and rectal temperature, or CK concentration. Seminal variables were not affected by the treatments. In conclusion, it would be important to consider the combined application of cloprostenol and oxytocin before EE, as it can shorten the process, reducing the electrical stimulus with positive effects on animal welfare and without affecting seminal quality in goat bucks.
