RESUMO

The magnetic and electric dipoles of ferroics play a central role in their fascinating properties. In particular, topological configurations have shown promising potential for use in novel electromechanical and electronic devices. Magnetic configurations from simple collinear to complex topological are well-documented. In contrast, many complex topological features in the electric counterpart remain unexplored. Here, we report the first example of three-dimensional electric dipole sinewave topological structure in a PbZrO3-based bulk perovskite, which presents an interesting triple-hysteresis loop macroscopically. This polar configuration consists of two orthogonal sinewave electric dipole modulations decoded from a polar incommensurate phase by advanced diffraction and atomic-resolution imaging techniques. The resulting topology is unraveled to be the competition between the antiferroelectric and ferroelectric states, stabilized by the modulation of the Pb 6s2 lone pair and the antiferrodistortive effect. These findings further reinforce the similarity of the magnetic and electric topologies.

BACKGROUND: Poor oral health is an independent risk factor for upper-aerodigestive tract cancers, including esophageal cancer. Several studies have investigated short-term outcomes after esophagectomy and the impact of periodontal disease, but few have examined the impact of periodontal disease on long-term outcomes. The purpose of this study was to investigate the rate of periodontitis among esophagectomy patients and the prognostic value of periodontitis and its effect on prognosis after esophagectomy. METHODS: A total of 508 patients who underwent esophagectomy received oral health care from a dentist before cancer treatment at Akita University Hospital between January 2009 and December 2021. We assessed the presence and severity of the patients' periodontitis and divided them into no-periodontitis, mild periodontitis, severe periodontitis and edentulous jaw groups. We then assessed 10-year overall survival (OS) and disease-specific survival (DSS) and determined whether periodontitis was an independent prognostic factor affecting OS and DSS. RESULTS: We found that 101 (19.9%) patients had no periodontitis, 207 (40.8%) had mild periodontitis, 176 (34.6%) had severe periodontitis requiring tooth extraction, and 24 (4.7%) had edentulous jaw. Both OS and DSS were significantly poorer in the periodontitis than no-periodontitis group (p < 0.001). In detail, the edentulous jaw group had the poorest prognosis (p < 0.001). Multivariate analysis showed that periodontitis was an independent risk factor affecting OS and DSS. CONCLUSION: Esophageal cancer patients had a high prevalence of periodontitis. Moreover, the presence of periodontitis and severity of periodontitis are independent risk factors contributing to a poorer prognosis after esophagectomy.

In this study, we successfully synthesized a novel A-site columnar-ordered perovskite CaZnV2O6. This compound features a square-planar-coordinated Zn2+ disorder, which is the same characteristic as the centrosymmetric paraelectric CaMnTi2O6. Unlike CaMnTi2O6, which shows a centrosymmetric paraelectric-noncentrosymmetric ferroelectric transition, CaZnV2O6 retains Pauli-paramagnetic metallicity arising from itinerant V4+ d1 electrons and centrosymmetry down to 5 K. Based on analogous compounds, we expect CaZnV2O6 to provide a new playground for the electronic and magnetic states of V4+.

The nature of chemical bonds determines the electronic and magnetic properties of compounds. A metal-metal bonding (V-V dimer) and its effect on the magnetism of ilmenite-type CoVO3 were studied. Polycrystalline CoVO3 samples were synthesized using a high-pressure synthesis method. Crystal structure refinement revealed that V-V dimers exist at temperatures below 550 K in the vanadium layers. Co2+ in CoVO3 exhibits an S = 3/2 state, whereas a Jeff = 1/2 state was reported in ilmenite-type CoTiO3. The existence of V-V dimers reduces the structural symmetry (from R3 to P1), which can change the magnetic ground state.

Pressure-induced phase transitions in a monoclinically distorted LiNbO3-type CuNbO3 with triangularly coordinated Cu and octahedrally coordinated Nb were experimentally and computationally investigated. Phase transitions into GdFeO3-type or NaIO3-type structures generally observed in LiNbO3-type compounds below 30 GPa were not detected in CuNbO3 even at the maximum experimental pressure, 32.4 GPa. Our density functional theory calculations revealed that the phase transition is suppressed by the preference for the CuO3 triangular coordination environment, which reduces the total internal energy. This study clarifies that the change in the coordination environment of given ions can affect the pressure-induced phase transition.

We report room-temperature (RT) magnetoresistance (MR) in a novel Fe-based perovskite, SrV0.3Fe0.7O2.8. This compound contains ordered oxygen vacancies in every fifth primitive perovskite (111)p plane, leading to a layered structure consisting of triple-octahedral and double-tetrahedral layers. Along with the oxygen vacancies, the transition-metal ions are also ordered: the octahedral sites are occupied by 100% of Fe ions, while the tetrahedral sites are occupied by 25% of Fe ions and 75% of V ions. As a result, SrV0.3Fe0.7O2.8 forms a magnetically striped lattice in which the octahedral layers with 100% of magnetic Fe ions are separated by the diluted magnetic layer. The compound exhibits weak ferromagnetism and shows a large negative MR (-5% at 3 T) at RT, despite the small saturation moment (0.4 µB/Fe atom). Thus, this type of layered compound is promising for further large MR by an increase of magnetization through chemical substitution.

The strength and sign of superexchange interactions are often predicted on the basis of the bond angles between magnetic ions, but complications may arise in situations with a nontrivial arrangement of the magnetic orbitals. We report on a novel molecular tetramer compound [Cu(H2O)dmbpy]2[V2O2F8] (dmbpy = 4,4'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridyl) that is composed of triangular "CuV2" fragments and displays a spin gap behavior. By combining first-principles calculations and electronic models, we reveal that superexchange Cu-V interactions carry drastically different coupling strengths along two Cu-F-V pathways with comparable bond angles in the triangular "CuV2" fragment. Counterintuitively, their strong disparity is found to originate from the restricted symmetry of the half-filled Cu dx2-y2 orbital stabilized by the crystal field, leading to one dominating antiferromagnetic Cu-V coupling in each fragment. We revisit the magnetic properties of the reported spin-gapped chain compound [enH2]Cu(H2O)2[V2O2F8] (enH2 = ethylene diammonium) containing similar triangular "CuV2" fragments, and the magnetic behavior of the molecular tetramer and the chain compounds is rationalized as that of weakly coupled spin dimers and spin trimers, respectively. This work demonstrates that fundamentally different magnetic couplings can be observed between magnetic ions with similar bond angles in a single spin motif, thus providing a strategy to introduce various exchange interactions combined with low dimensionality in heterometallic Cu(II)-V(IV) compounds.

OBJECTIVES: Immunotherapy with nivolumab for patients with recurrent/metastatic oral squamous cell carcinoma has not been evaluated. Here, we aimed to examine the efficacy, safety, and prognostic factors of nivolumab in these patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This multicenter retrospective observational study involved patients who received nivolumab between April 2017 and June 2019. The patient characteristics were evaluated for association with progression-free and overall survival. Progression-free and overall survival rates were calculated; parameters that were significant in the univariate analysis were used as explanatory variables. Independent factors for progression-free and overall survival were identified using multivariate analysis. RESULTS: Totally, 143 patients were included. The overall response and disease control rates were 27.3% and 46.2%, respectively. The median, 1- and 2-year progression-free survival rates were 2.7 months, 25.4%, and 19.2%, respectively; those for overall survival were 11.2 months, 47.3%, and 33.6%, respectively. The independent factors affecting progression-free survival were performance status and immune-related adverse event occurrence, whereas those affecting overall survival were performance status, target disease, and number of previous lines of systemic cancer therapy. Eight patients reported grade ≥3 immune-related adverse events. CONCLUSION: Nivolumab was effective for recurrent/metastatic oral squamous cell carcinoma treatment and was well tolerated by patients.

Spin state transitions and intermetallic charge transfers can essentially change material structural and physical properties while excluding external chemical doping. However, these two effects have rarely been found to occur sequentially in a specific material. In this article, we show the realization of these two phenomena in a perovskite oxide PbCoO3 with a simple ABO3 composition under high pressure. PbCoO3 possesses a peculiar A- and B-site ordered charge distribution Pb2+Pb4+3Co2+2Co3+2O12 with insulating behavior at ambient conditions. The high spin Co2+ gradually changes to low spin with increasing pressure up to about 15 GPa, leading to an anomalous increase of resistance magnitude. Between 15 and 30 GPa, the intermetallic charge transfer occurs between Pb4+ and Co2+ cations. The accumulated charge-transfer effect triggers a metal-insulator transition as well as a first-order structural phase transition toward a Tetra.-I phase at the onset of ∼20 GPa near room temperature. On further compression over 30 GPa, the charge transfer completes, giving rise to another first-order structural transformation toward a Tetra.-II phase and the reentrant electrical insulating behavior.

Spontaneous polarization (Ps) of novel order-disorder type lead-free ferroelectric CaMnTi2O6 was successfully enhanced by partial V4+ substitution for Ti4+. A synchrotron X-ray diffraction study revealed that the polar displacement of octahedrally coordinated (Ti, V) in CaMn(Ti1-xVx)2O6 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.4) increases with V4+ substitution having Jahn-Teller activity owing to the d1 electronic configuration. Our magnetic study suggested the presence of antisite disorder between Ca2+ and square planar coordinated Mn2+ associated with Mn-V intermetallic charge transfer for x ≥ 0.4, resulting in decreases in spontaneous polarization and the ferroelectric-paraelectric transition temperature. This is the first report on the enhanced polarization owing to the Jahn-Teller distortion of V4+ without stereochemical Pb2+ or Bi3+.

BACKGROUND: Excessive Rho/Rho-kinase pathway activation occurs subsequent to stroke. We examined the neuroprotective effects of pre- and posttreatment with fasudil (a Rho-kinase inhibitor) in a rat transient spinal cord ischemia-reperfusion model under normothermic conditions. METHODS: After approval by our animal research committee, male Sprague-Dawley rats were assigned to 1 of 6 groups: pre- and postcontrol (C); pre- and postfasudil (F); and pre- and postsham (S). Fasudil (10 mg/kg) or normal saline was administered intravenously over 30 minutes before ischemia in the pre-F or pre-C groups, and over 30 minutes after reperfusion in the post-F or post-C groups. Sham groups were not subjected to ischemia. Ischemia was induced by aortic occlusion using a balloon catheter combined with hypotension for 10 minutes. Neurologic deficit scores (NDS; 0-8 points) were assessed 1, 7, and 14 days after ischemia, and then histopathologic outcomes were assessed. RESULTS: NDS 7 and 14 days after ischemia in the pre-F group (median [range]; 3.5 [2-6] and 2.5 [0-6]) were lower than those in the pre-C group (5.5 [4-7] and 4.5 [4-6]; P = .046 and P = .049), whereas NDS in the post-F group and in the post-C group were not different. The numbers of intact neurons in the gray matter in the pre- and post-F groups (mean ± standard deviation [95% confidence interval]: 25 ± 7 [20-30] and 16 ± 5 [12-19]) were greater than those in the pre- and post-C groups (11 ± 5 [7-14] and 9 ± 3 [7-11]; P < .001 and P = .002). The number of intact neurons in the post-F group (16 ± 5 [12-19]) was lower than the number in the post-S group (26 ± 2 [24-29]; P < .001). The percentages of vacuolation in the white matter in the pre- and post-F groups (21.5 ± 8.4 [15.5-27.5] and 13.6 ± 7.4 [8.3-18.9]) were lower than those in the pre- and post-C groups (43.7 ± 10.4 [36.3-51.1] and 40.6 ± 12.3 [31.8-49.4]; P < .001 and P < .001). CONCLUSIONS: Our results demonstrated that intravenous fasudil administered before ischemia improved both neurologic and histopathologic outcomes even 14 days after ischemia, while fasudil administered postinsult improved histopathologic outcomes only in normothermic rats. Fasudil may be a relevant pretreatment paradigm for planned procedures at risk for spinal cord ischemia.

Perovskite rare-earth cobaltites ACoO3 (A = Sc, Y, La-Lu) have been of enduring interest for decades due to their unusual structural and physical properties associated with the spin-state transitions of low-spin Co3+ ions. Herein, we have synthesized a non-rare-earth perovskite cobaltite, InCoO3, at 15 GPa and 1400 °C and investigated its crystal structure and magnetic ground state. Under the same high-pressure and high-temperature conditions, we also prepared a perovskite-type ScCoO3 with an improved cation stoichiometry in comparison to that in a previous study, where synthesis at 6 GPa and 1297 °C yielded a perovskite cobaltite with cation mixing on the A-site, (Sc0.95Co0.05)CoO3. The two perovskite phases have nearly stoichiometric cation compositions, crystallizing in the orthorhombic Pnma space group. In the present investigation, comprehensive studies on newly developed and well-known Pnma ACoO3 perovskites (A = In, Sc, Y, Pr-Lu) show that InCoO3 does not fulfill the general evolution of crystal metrics with A-site cation size, indicating that InCoO3 and rare-earth counterparts have different chemistry for stabilizing the Pnma structures. Detailed structural analyses combined with first-principles calculations reveal that the origin of the anomaly for InCoO3 is ascribed to the A-site cation displacements that accompany octahedral tilts; despite the highly tilted CoO6 network, the In-O covalency makes In3+ ions reluctant to move from their ideal cubic-symmetry position, leading to less orthorhombic distortion than would be expected from electrostatic/ionic size mismatch effects. Magnetic studies demonstrate that InCoO3 and ScCoO3 are diamagnetic with a low-spin state of Co3+ below 300 K, in contrast to the case of (Sc0.95Co0.05)CoO3, where the high-spin Co3+ ions on the A-site generate a large paramagnetic moment. The present work extends the accessible composition range of the low-spin orthocobaltite series and thus should help to establish a more comprehensive understanding of the structure-property relation.

BACKGROUND: Poor oral health is a risk factor for causing upper aerodigestive tract tumors, including esophageal cancer. Our aim was to determine the periodontitis rate in our cohort of esophageal cancer patients. We also analyzed whether preoperative dental examination and care reduces the likelihood of severe pneumonia after esophagectomy. STUDY DESIGN: Between 2003 and 2014, 529 esophageal cancer patients received esophagectomy at Akita University Hospital. We studied 232 patients who had preoperative dental examinations and care (dental care group) retrospectively and assessed the severity of their periodontitis. The dental care group was compared to 297 patients who did not have preoperative dental care (control group) with respect to the incidence of severe pneumonia after esophagectomy. RESULTS: Ninety-one patients (39.2%) in the dental care group were diagnosed with slight periodontitis and 69 (29.7%) were diagnosed with severe periodontitis. Among all the patients, 69 patients (13.0%) were diagnosed with grade 3B postoperative severe pneumonia. The dental care group had a significantly lower incidence of severe pneumonia than the control group. Moreover, multivariable logistic regression analysis revealed that anastomotic leakage, preoperative dental care, gender and %VC were correlated significantly with the occurrence of postoperative severe pneumonia. CONCLUSION: Preoperative dental examination and care by a dentist are essential to reduce the likelihood of postoperative severe pneumonia in esophageal cancer patients.

We investigated the effects of zoledronate (ZA) and compressive force, separately and in combination, on the proliferation and differentiation of human gingival fibroblasts (HGFs) to verify the mechanism underlying medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ). The addition of 100 µM ZA markedly inhibited cell proliferation. Expression of type I collagen, fibroblast growth factor 2, and connective tissue growth factor genes, was decreased by ZA and compressive force. Similar results were observed for collagen expression by using Sirius red staining. These results, together with clinical findings that MRONJ is more common in cases with excessive mechanical stress on the oral mucosa, suggest that bisphosphonates such as ZA and mechanical stress may act in conjunction as risk factors for the development of MRONJ by affecting homeostasis of the oral mucosal tissues, including HGFs.

Age estimation is important in forensic investigations of unidentified human remains. This study assessed the correlation between age and Hounsfield unit (HU) values of the palate and mandibular condyle based on postmortem computed tomography (CT) and analyzed the influence of occlusal support in developing an age estimation method for Japanese individuals, including older adults. The sample consisted of a training dataset (357 cadavers) and a validation dataset (300 cadavers) that underwent postmortem CT. Three measurements were selected: the respective HU values of the palate and mandibular condyle and the Eichner classification. The correlation coefficients between age and HU values were also evaluated. Multiple stepwise regression analysis was performed to evaluate the significance of four parameters (sex, respective HU values of the palate and mandibular condyle, and the Eichner classification) for age estimation and to determine the best age estimation formula. In the validation tests, inaccuracy and bias were calculated for the groups aged ≥65 or <65 years. Significant correlations between age and HU values of the palate and mandibular condyle were observed, regardless of sex. In multiple stepwise regression analysis, all variables except sex were significantly correlated with age. The age estimation formula from the regression analysis was useful, and the validation test exhibited high accuracy, especially in older adults. The HU values of the palate and mandibular condyle and the Eichner classification are useful for age estimation in Japanese individuals.

Heterotopic ossification (HO) is a non-physiological bone formation where soft tissue progenitor cells differentiate into chondrogenic cells. In fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP), a rare genetic disease characterized by progressive and systemic HO, the Activin A/mutated ACVR1/mTORC1 cascade induces HO in progenitors in muscle tissues. The relevant biological processes aberrantly regulated by activated mTORC1 remain unclear, however. RNA-sequencing analyses revealed the enrichment of genes involved in oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) during Activin A-induced chondrogenesis of mesenchymal stem cells derived from FOP patient-specific induced pluripotent stem cells. Functional analyses showed a metabolic transition from glycolysis to OXPHOS during chondrogenesis, along with increased mitochondrial biogenesis. mTORC1 inhibition by rapamycin suppressed OXPHOS, whereas OXPHOS inhibitor IACS-010759 inhibited cartilage matrix formation in vitro, indicating that OXPHOS is principally involved in mTORC1-induced chondrogenesis. Furthermore, IACS-010759 inhibited the muscle injury-induced enrichment of fibro/adipogenic progenitor genes and HO in transgenic mice carrying the mutated human ACVR1. These data indicated that OXPHOS is a critical downstream mediator of mTORC1 signaling in chondrogenesis and therefore is a potential FOP therapeutic target.

Collagen X is a non-fibril collagen produced by hypertrophic chondrocytes and was believed to associate with the calcification process of growth plate cartilage. The homozygous loss of Col10a1 gene in mice, however, demonstrated no remarkable effects on growth plate formation or skeletal development. To investigate the role of collagen X in human chondrocytes, we established human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) with heterozygous (COL10A1 +/-) or homozygous (COL10A1 -/-) deletions of COL10A1 gene using the dual sgRNA CRISPR/Cas9 system. Several mutant clones were established and differentiated into hypertrophic chondrocytes by a previously reported 3D induction method. No remarkable differences were observed during the differentiation process between parental and mutant cell lines, which differentiated into cells with features of hypertrophic chondrocytes, indicating that collagen X is dispensable for the hypertrophic differentiation of human chondrocytes in vitro. To investigate the effects of collagen X deficiency in vivo, chondrocyte pellets at the proliferating or prehypertrophic stage were transplanted into immunodeficient mice. Proliferating pellet-derived tissues demonstrated the zonal distribution of chondrocytes with the transition to bone tissues mimicking growth plates, and the proportion of bone tended to be larger in COL10A1 -/- tissues. Prehypertrophic pellet-derived tissues produced trabecular bone structures with features of endochondral ossification, and there was no clear difference between parental- and mutant-derived tissues. A transcriptome analysis of chondrocyte pellets at the hypertrophic phase showed a lower expression of proliferating-phase genes and a higher expression of calcification-phase genes in COL10A1 -/- pellets compared with parental cell pellets. These in vitro and in vivo data suggested that collagen X is dispensable for the hypertrophic differentiation and endochondral ossification of human iPSC-derived chondrocytes, though it may facilitate the differentiation process. Thus, COL10A1 -/- iPSC lines are useful for investigating the physiological role of collagen X in chondrocyte differentiation. © 2023 The Authors. Although the formation of bone-like nodules is regarded as the differentiation process from stem cells to osteogenic cells, including osteoblasts and osteocytes, the precise biological events during nodule formation are unknown. Here we performed the osteogenic induction of human induced pluripotent stem cells using a three-dimensional (3D) culture system using type I collagen gel and a rapid induction method with retinoic acid. Confocal and time-lapse imaging revealed the osteogenic differentiation was initiated with vigorous focal proliferation followed by aggregation, from which cells invaded the gel. Invading cells changed their morphology and expressed osteocyte marker genes, suggesting the transition from osteoblasts to osteocytes. Single-cell RNA sequencing analysis revealed that 3D culture-induced cells with features of periosteal skeletal stem cells, some of which expressed TGFß-regulated osteoblast-related molecules. The role of TGFß signal was further analyzed in the transition from osteoblasts to osteocytes, which revealed that modulation of the TGFß signal changed the morphology and motility of cells isolated from the 3D culture, suggesting that the TGFß signal maintains the osteoblastic phenotype and the transition into osteocytes requires down-regulation of the TGFß signal.

Copper-doped ZnO nanoparticles with a dopant concentration varying from 1-7 mol% were synthesized and their structural, magnetic, and photocatalytic properties were studied using XRD, TEM, SQUID magnetometry, EPR, UV-vis spectroscopy, and first-principles methods within the framework of density functional theory (DFT). Structural analysis indicated highly crystalline Cu-doped ZnO nanoparticles with a hexagonal wurtzite structure, irrespective of the dopant concentration. EDX and EPR studies indicated the incorporation of doped Cu2+ ions in the host ZnO lattice. The photocatalytic activities of the Cu-doped ZnO nanoparticles investigated through the degradation of methylene blue demonstrated an enhancement in photocatalytic activity as the degradation rate changed from 9.89 × 10-4 M min-1 to 4.98 × 10-2 M min-1. By the first-principles method, our results indicated that the Cu(3d) orbital was strongly hybridized with the O(2p) state below the valence band maximum (VBM) due to covalent bonding, and the ground states of the Cu-doped ZnO is favorable for the ferromagnetic state by the asymmetry of majority and minority states due to the presence of unpaired electron.

INTRODUCTION: In early-stage oral tongue squamous cell carcinoma (OTSCC), elective neck dissection (END) is recommended when occult lymph node metastasis is suspected; however, there is no unanimous consensus on the risks and benefits of END in such cases. The management of clinically node-negative (cN0) OTSCC remains controversial. This study, therefore, aimed to evaluate the efficacy of END and its impact on the quality of life (QoL) of patients with cN0 OTSCC. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This is a prospective, multicentre, nonrandomised observational study. The choice of whether to perform END at the same time as resection of the primary tumour is based on institutional policy and patient preference. The primary endpoint of this study is 3-year overall survival. The secondary endpoints are 3-year disease-specific survival, 3-year relapse-free survival and the impact on patient QoL. Propensity score-matching analysis will be performed to reduce selection bias. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: This study was approved by the Clinical Research Review Board of the Nagasaki University. The protocol of this study was registered at the University Hospital Medical Information Network Clinical Trials Registry. The datasets generated during the current study will be available from the corresponding author on reasonable request. The results will be disseminated internationally, through scientific and professional conferences and in peer-reviewed medical journals. TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER: UMIN000027875.
