BACKGROUND: There are significant sex differences in the incidence of stroke or diabetes mellitus. However, little is known about sex differences in stroke rehospitalization among diabetic patients. OBJECT: To explore the sex differences in short-term and long-term rehospitalization of ischemic stroke patients with Type 2 diabetes mellitus. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted from 2017 to 2021. The rehospitalization events of ischemic stroke patients with diabetes mellitus were identified by the national unified Electronic Health Record. Propensity score matching was applied to adjust for multiple covariates, and LASSO regression was used to screen for independent variables. Cox proportional hazards model was utilized to analyze the different sex in short-term (90 days, 1 year) and long-term (5 years) rehospitalization in ischemic stroke patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. RESULT: A total of 10,724 ischemic stroke patients were included in this study, of whom 5,952 (55.5%) were males. After a 1:1 propensity score matching, there were 3,460 males and 2,772 females. After adjusting for confounding factors, female patients with type 2 diabetes had an increased risk of ischemic stroke rehospitalization at 90 days (HR: 1.94, 95%CI: 1.13-3.33, P < 0.05), 1 year (HR: 1.65, 95%CI:1.22-2.23, P = 0.001), and 5 years (HR: 1.58, 95%CI: 1.26-1.97, P < 0.001). However, there was no significant relationship between male patients with type 2 diabetes and the risk of ischemic stroke rehospitalization, either in the short or long term. CONCLUSION: Females with type 2 diabetes mellitus have a higher risk of ischemic stroke rehospitalization in both the short-term and long-term.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between dementia and the mortality of stroke is a significant concern for patients and careers. However, there are few research about it in China and a lack of reliable data on the risk of dementia. We aim to analyze and compare the risk of death in stroke patients with and without dementia. Further investigation into the predictive value of dementia for stroke death. METHODS: All patients with stroke who were identified among residents of Ningxia, between January 1, 2014 to December 31, 2021, set death or May 22, 2022 as the observation endpoint. All patients were screened by 1:4 propensity score matching (PSM). The association between dementia and all-cause mortality was evaluated using Cox regression with survival time. Evaluation of the predictive value of dementia using decision curve analysis (DCA) and clinical impact curve (CIC) curves. RESULT: Mortality of stroke with dementia is 45.4% and without dementia is 13.8%, further calculated one-year mortality is higher in the patients with dementia than without dementia (17.3%vs. 5.4%, p < 0.001). Stroke patients with dementia had a 3.74 times higher risk of death (95% CI = 3.29,4.26) and had a shorter survival time than those without dementia. Dementia was an independent predictor of death in all models (hazard ratio [HR]=3.77,95%CI: 3.31-4.30, p < 0.001). DCA and CIC curves indicated that dementia has a high value in predicting the risk of death in stroke patients. CONCLUSION: Dementia is an independent risk factor for death and reduces survival time in stroke patients.
RESUMO
Two Gram-stain-negative bacterial strains, SM1969T and SM1979T, were isolated from coastal surface seawater of Qingdao, China. They were taxonomically characterized by the phylogenetic, genomic, chemotaxonomic and phenotypic analyses. The two strains shared 97.0% 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity with each other and the highest similarity (96.8-97.5%) with type strains of six species in the genera Shimia, Tritonibacter and Tropicibacter in the Roseobacter group of the family Rhodobacteraceae. In the phylogenetic tree based on single-copy orthologous clusters (OCs), both strains clustered with known species of the genus Tritonibacter and together formed a separate branch adjacent to Tritonibacter ulvae. Although sharing many chemotaxonomic and phenotypic characteristics, the two strains could be differentiated from each other and closely related species by numerous traits. Particularly, strain SM1969T was found to have a DMSP lyase coding gene dddW in its genome and have the ability to produce DMS from DMSP while strain SM1979T was not. The average nucleotide identity and in silico DNA-DNA hybridization values between strains SM1969T and SM1979T and type strains of closely related species were all below the thresholds to discriminate bacterial species, demonstrating that they constitute two new species in the genus Tritonibacter. The names Tritonibacter aquimaris sp. nov. and Tritonibacter litoralis sp. nov. are proposed for the two new species, with type strains being SM1969T (= MCCC 1K04320T = KCTC 72843T) and SM1979T (= MCCC 1K04321T = KCTC 72842T), respectively.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, shallow-buried drip irrigation in spring maize production has gradually replaced drip irrigation under plastic films and has become a common irrigation method in semiarid areas of northern China. RESULT: Two years of field experiments were carried out in the semiarid area of western Jilin province to compare the two drip irrigation methods in the spring maize production system. The treatments included MW1 (drip irrigation under mulch + moderate irrigation amount), MW2 (drip irrigation under mulch + high irrigation amount), SM1 (shallow-buried drip irrigation + moderate irrigation amount), and SM2 (shallow-buried drip irrigation + high irrigation amount). The maize yields were significantly higher under mulch than under shallow-buried drip irrigation, but there was no interaction between mulch and the irrigation amount. Drip irrigation under mulch greatly improved spring maize N, P and K uptake compared with that under shallow-buried drip irrigation. The agronomic-use efficiency, recovery-use efficiency, and partial factor productivity were ranked in the order of MW2 > MW1 > SW2 > SW1. The water-use efficiency of drip irrigation under mulch was 7.44% and 6.82% higher than that of shallow-buried drip irrigation under the moderate and high irrigation levels, respectively. However, considering the costs of the plastic mulch, there was no significant (P < 0.05) difference in economic benefits between the SW and MW treatments. CONCLUSION: Drip irrigation under plastic film provides greater advantages for production, but shallow-buried drip irrigation may be a suitable method for farmers until fertigation technology is further optimized and the problem of plastic film pollution is solved. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry.

A Gram-stain-negative, oxidase- and catalase-positive, facultative anaerobic and rod-shaped bacterium, designated strain SM1977T, was isolated from the surface of coralline algae collected from the intertidal zone at Qingdao, PR China. The strain grew at 10-35 °C, pH 4.5-8.5 and with 1-8.5% (w/v) NaCl. It reduced nitrate to nitrite and hydrolysed Tween 20 and DNA. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain SM1977T was affiliated with the genus Vibrio, having the highest sequence similarity (97.6â%) to the type strain of Vibrio casei, followed by those of another five species (95.6-97.6â%) in the Rumoiensis clade of the genus Vibrio. However, the in silico DNA-DNA hybridization (75.3-75.9â%) and average nucleotide identity (21.6-22.8â%) values of SM1977T against these close relatives were all below the corresponding thresholds to discriminate bacterial species. The major fatty acids were summed feature 3 (C16:1 ω7c and/or C16:1 ω6c), C16:0 and summed feature 8 (C18:1 ω6c and /or C18:1 ω7c). The predominant polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, diphosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylglycerol. The sole respiratory quinone was Q-8. The genomic DNA G+C content of strain SM1977T, determined from the obtained whole genomic sequence, was 42.3 mol%. On the basis of the polyphasic results obtained in this study, strain SM1977T is considered to represent a novel species within the genus Vibrio, for which the name Vibrio algicola sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is SM1977T (=MCCC 1K04351T=KCTC 72847T).

BACKGROUND: Magnesium (Mg) has important effects on maize growth, and the application of Mg fertilizer with straw return inevitably has an impact on Mg absorption in maize. RESULTS: A two-year field trial was conducted to investigate the effects of Mg fertilizers with straw return on Mg accumulations, partitioning and remobilization in maize (Zea mays L.) in northeast China. The treatments included: (i) JM3 (straw + Mg fertilizer), (ii) JM0 (straw + no Mg fertilizer), (iii) WM3 (no straw + Mg fertilizer), and (iv) WM0 (no Mg fertilizer + no straw). The results showed that the highest Mg accumulation stage in maize was prominent between the tasseling stage (VT) and blister stage (R2), and JM3 treatment accumulated 13.3% and 26.6% more Mg on average than those of the WM3 and WM0, respectively. Magnesium remobilization in distinct organs was highest in JM3 and there were significant differences between treatments. The total contribution to the grain for the JM3 treatment was higher by 6.0% and 17.9% on average than those for the WM3 and WM0, respectively. The grain yield of JM3 treatment was 0.5% and 5.3% higher than that of WM3 and WM0, respectively. CONCLUSION: Generally, these outcomes indicated that there was an interaction between Mg fertilizer and maize straw. The application of Mg fertilizer significantly promoted the accumulation, distribution to the maize organs, and the remobilization of Mg. The combination of straw return and Mg application further increased the accumulation of Mg in the grain. And all these lead to an increase in yield. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry.

Constructing dual or multiple noncovalent crosslinks is highly effective to improve the mechanical and stimuli-responsive properties of supramolecular physical hydrogels, due to the synergistic effects of different noncovalent bonds. Herein, a series of tough physical hydrogels are prepared by solution casting and subsequently swelling the films of poly(ureidopyrimidone methacrylate-co-stearyl acrylate-co-acrylic acid). The hydrophobic interactions between crystallizable alkyl chains and the quadruple hydrogen bonds between ureidopyrimidone (UPy) motifs serve as the dual crosslinks of hydrogels. Synergistic effects between the hydrophobic interactions and hydrogen bonds render the hydrogels excellent mechanical properties, with tensile breaking stress up to 4.6 MPa and breaking strain up to 680%. The UPy motifs promote the crystallization of alkyl chains and the hydrophobic alkyl chains also stabilize UPy-UPy hydrogen bonding. The resultant hydrogels are responsive to multiple external stimuli, such as temperature, pH, and ion; therefore, they show the thermal-induced dual and metal ion-induced triple shape memory behaviors.

Although the independent effects of ambient CO, temperature or humidity on stroke have been confirmed, it is still unclear where there is an interaction between these factors and who is sensitive populations for these. The stroke hospitalization and ambient CO, temperature, humidity data were collected in 22 Counties and districts of Ningxia, China in 2014-2019. The lagged effect of ambient CO, temperature or humidity were analyze by the generalized additive model; the interaction were evaluated by the bivariate response surface model and stratified analysis with relative excessive risk (RERI). High temperature and CO levels had synergistic effects on hemorrhagic stroke (RERI = 0.05, 95% CI 0.033-0.086) and ischemic stroke (RERI = 0.035, 95% CI 0.006-0.08). Low relative humidity and CO were synergistic in hemorrhagic stroke (RERI = 0.192, 95% CI 0.184-0.205) and only in ischemic stroke in the elderly group (RERI = 0.056, 95% CI 0.025-0.085). High relative humidity and CO exhibited antagonistic effects on the risk of ischemic stroke hospitalization in both male and female groups (RERI = - 0.088, 95% CI - 0.151to - 0.031; RERI = - 0.144, 95% CI - 0.216 to - 0.197). Exposure to CO increases the risk of hospitalization related to hemorrhagic and ischemic strokes. CO and temperature or humidity interact with risk of stroke hospitalization with sex and age differences.

Purpose: To investigate changes in the incidence of infections by extended-spectrum ß-lactamase-producing Enterobacterales (ESBL-E) and analyzed whether there was an association between endogenous changes in the organism due to COVID-19 infection and the infections by ESBL-E. Patients and Methods: The study was a single-center retrospective case-control design. A total of 107 patients infected by ESBL-E during the COVID-19 pandemic were selected as the case group, while 214 uninfected patients selected by 1:2 propensity score matching (PSM) acted as the control group. Univariate analysis, LASSO logistic regression, and multivariate logistic regression were used to determine the risk factors for ESBL-E infection. An interrupted time series was used to analyze the changes in the incidence of ESBL-E infections in hospitalized patients during the COVID-19 pandemic. Results: The incidence of infection with ESBL-E showed a significant increase during COVID-19 (3.42 vs 4.92 per 1000 patients, p = 0.003). The incidence of ESBL-E infections increased at an average rate of 0.45 per 1000 patients per week compared to the pre-pandemic period (p = 0.022). Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that a length of hospitalization ≥ 15 days (OR: 2.98 (1.07-8.28), chronic kidney disease (OR: 4.25 (1.32-13.70), white blood cell (WBC) > 9.5×10^9/L (OR: 3.04 (1.54-6.01), use of hormonal drugs (OR: 2.38 (1.04-5.43), antibacterial drug use 1 type (OR: 5.38 (2.04-14.21), antibacterial drug use 2 types (OR: 23.05 (6.71-79.25) and antibacterial drug use ≥ 3 types (OR: 88.35 (8.55-912.63) were independent risk factors for infection with ESBL-E, while chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) was a protective factor (OR: 0.14 (0.03-0.66). COVID-19 was not an independent risk factor for infection by ESBL-E. Conclusion: During the COVID-19 pandemic, the incidence of infections by ESBL-E increased significantly. Increased exposure to traditional risk factors were the main reasons, however, COVID-19 was not an independent risk factor for ESBL-E infection.

Stimuli-responsive shape-transforming hydrogels have shown great potential toward various engineering applications including soft robotics and microfluidics. Despite significant progress in designing hydrogels with ever more sophisticated shape-morphing behaviors, an ultimate goal yet to be fulfilled is programmable reversible shape transformation. It is reported here that transient structural anisotropy can be programmed into copolymer hydrogels of N-isopropylacrylamide and stearyl acrylate. Structural anisotropy arises from the deformed hydrophobic domains of the stearyl groups after thermomechanical programming, which serves as a template for the reversible globule-to-coil transition of the poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) chains. The structural anisotropy is transient and can be erased upon cooling. This allows repeated programming for reversible shape transformation, an unknown feature for the current hydrogels. The programmable reversible transformation is expected to greatly extend the technical scope for hydrogel-based devices.

In order to maintain high yields and protect the environment, the replacement of chemical fertilizers with organic ones has received increasing attention in recent years. A 2-year field experiment (2015-2016) was carried out to assess the effects of substituting equal amounts of mineral fertilizer with organic manure on the yield, dry matter (DM), and nitrogen (N) uptake of spring maize (Zea mays L.) and on the mineral N (Nmin) distribution in the soil profile. The treatments included chemical fertilizer; different amounts of maize straw, cow manure, and chicken manure; and an unfertilized control (CK). Compared with the chemical fertilizer treatments, equal amounts of substitutions with cow manure or chicken manure increased production, and a 25% nutrient substitution resulted in the best yield increase. Straw return had no effect on maize production, and 100% straw return resulted in reduced production. The N accumulation and DM content both exhibited a slow-fast-slow growth trend throughout the various growth stages, and the average N uptake and DM accumulation in response to the treatments followed the order of chicken manure > cow manure > chemical fertilizer > straw return > CK. The Nmin content in the profile not only increased as the Nmin application rate increased but also showed greater increases at certain depths than at the surface, indicating that excessive N led to leaching. These results suggest that an appropriate proportion of organic substitution not only provides enough nutrients but also improves the soil environment and leads to increased yields. This technique represents a practical method of continuously increasing production and reducing the risk of N leaching.
