RESUMO

The cliff rose (Armeria maritima), like other halophytes, has a phenolics-based antioxidant system that allows it to grow in saline habitats. Provided that antioxidant properties are usually accompanied by antimicrobial activity, in this study we investigated the phytochemicals present in a hydromethanolic extract of A. maritima flowers and explored its antifungal potential. The main phytocompounds, identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, were: hexadecanoic acid, octadecanoic acid, 9-octadecenoic acid, 3-(3,4-dihydroxy-phenyl)-acrylic acid ethyl ester, and benzeneacetaldehyde. The antifungal activity of the extract and its main constituents-alone and in combination with chitosan oligomers-was tested against six pathogenic taxa associated with soil-borne diseases of plant hosts in the family Cucurbitaceae: Fusarium equiseti, F. oxysporum f. sp. niveum, Macrophomina phaseolina, Neocosmospora falciformis, N. keratoplastica, and Sclerotinia sclerotiorum. In in vitro tests, EC90 effective concentrations in the 166-865 µg·mL-1 range were obtained for the chitosan oligomers-A. maritima extract conjugate complexes, lower than those obtained for fosetyl-Al and azoxystrobin synthetic fungicides tested for comparison purposes, and even outperforming mancozeb against F. equiseti. In ex situ tests against S. sclerotiorum conducted on artificially inoculated cucumber slices, full protection was achieved at a dose of 250 µg·mL-1. Thus, the reported results support the valorization of A. maritima as a source of biorationals for Cucurbitaceae pathogens protection, suitable for both organic and conventional agriculture.

RESUMO

This study evaluates the predictive modeling of the daily ambient temperature (maximum, Tmax; average, Tave; and minimum, Tmin) and its hourly estimation (T0h, …, T23h) using artificial neural networks (ANNs) for agricultural applications. The data, 2004-2010, were used for training and 2011 for validation, recorded at the SIAR agrometeorological station of Mansilla Mayor (León). ANN models for daily prediction have three neurons in the output layer (Tmax(t + 1), Tave(t + 1), Tmin(t + 1)). Two models were evaluated: (1) with three entries (Tmax(t), Tave(t), Tmin(t)), and (2) adding the day of the year (J(t)). The inclusion of J(t) improves the predictions, with an RMSE for Tmax = 2.56, Tave = 1.65 and Tmin = 2.09 (°C), achieving better results than the classical statistical methods (typical year Tave = 3.64 °C; weighted moving mean Tmax = 2.76, Tave = 1.81 and Tmin = 2.52 (°C); linear regression Tave = 1.85 °C; and Fourier Tmax = 3.75, Tave = 2.67 and Tmin = 3.34 (°C)) for one year. The ANN models for hourly estimation have 24 neurons in the output layer (T0h(t), …, T23h(t)) corresponding to the mean hourly temperature. In this case, the inclusion of the day of the year (J(t)) does not significantly improve the estimations, with an RMSE = 1.25 °C, but it improves the results of the ASHRAE method, which obtains an RMSE = 2.36 °C for one week. The results obtained, with lower prediction errors than those achieved with the classical methods, confirm the interest in using the ANN models for predicting temperatures in agricultural applications.

RESUMO

In this article, the interpolation of daily data of global solar irradiation, and the maximum, average, and minimum temperatures were measured. These measurements were carried out in the agrometeorological stations belonging to the Agro-climatic Information System for Irrigation (SIAR, in Spanish) of the Region of Castilla and León, in Spain, through the concept of Virtual Weather Station (VWS), which is implemented with Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs). This is serving to estimate data in every point of the territory, according to their geographic coordinates (i.e., longitude and latitude). The ANNs of the Multilayer Feed-Forward Perceptron (MLP) used are daily trained, along with data recorded in 53 agro-meteorological stations, and where the validation of the results is conducted in the station of Tordesillas (Valladolid). The ANN models for daily interpolation were tested with one, two, three, and four neurons in the hidden layer, over a period of 15 days (from 1 to 15 June 2020), with a root mean square error (RMSE, MJ/m2) of 1.23, 1.38, 1.31, and 1.04, respectively, regarding the daily global solar irradiation. The interpolation of ambient temperature also performed well when applying the VWS concept, with an RMSE (°C) of 0.68 for the maximum temperature with an ANN of four hidden neurons, 0.58 for the average temperature with three hidden neurons, and 0.83 for the minimum temperature with four hidden neurons.

RESUMO

Contamination of fish milt during collection can have an important effect on the quality of fresh and frozen samples. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of biological contaminants (urine, feces, and blood) on the sperm of Colossoma macropomum. After hormonal induction, contaminated and contaminant-free milt samples from thirteen males (6.48 ± 2.82 kg) were collected and frozen. The sperm motility was evaluated in fresh and frozen-thawed sperm. Membrane and DNA integrity and mitochondrial functionality were evaluated only in frozen samples. The results revealed lower motility for contaminated sperm in both fresh and frozen-thawed samples [urine (76.15 ± 19.38% and 8.08 ± 6.63%), feces (78.85 ± 26.07% and 1.67 ± 3.26%), and blood (79.62 ± 20.96% and 2.69 ± 4.39%), respectively] than for contaminant-free sperm (95.77 ± 6.07% and 40.00 ± 12.25%, respectively). Motility was different between contaminant-free (118.50 ± 52.08 s) and feces-contaminated (77.00 ± 42.54 s) fresh samples. However, in frozen samples, there was no difference in motility among the groups. The membrane integrity was lower in the contaminated (urine: 72.38 ± 15.55%, blood: 77.00 ± 11.50%, and feces: 68.00 ± 13.64%) than in the contaminant-free (91.46 ± 5.12%) sperm. DNA integrity and mitochondrial functionality were greater in the contaminant-free (82.85 ± 12.19% and 87.15 ± 9.01%, respectively) than in the feces-contaminated (93.38 ± 5.49% and 94.92 ± 6.73%, respectively) samples. C. macropomum sperm contaminated with urine, blood, or feces should not be used for cryopreservation, as these contaminants have detrimental effects on sperm quality.

RESUMO

This paper presents the replacement of a traditional wired communication link of the hyperbaric chambers with a wireless ZigBee-based system. This move allows a reduction in the costs of seals capable of withstanding the internal pressures and gives rise to a more versatile system. The new system is able to capture and process individual vital signs like the electrocardiography signal, and other analog sources, sending the data to an external computer and allowing analysis, representation and sharing with medical staff. This system solves such problems as the attenuation of the signal produced by the metal walls of the hyperbaric chamber and has a coverage area large enough to manage up to six patients with an effective data rate conversion of 2kHz. Furthermore, a battery-based and multiparameter platform is designed for multipatient hyperbaric chambers.

RESUMO

Nursing clinics in rheumatology (NCRs) are organisational care models that provide care centred within the scope of a nurse's abilities. To analyse the impact of NCR in the rheumatology services, national multicenter observational prospective cohort studied 1-year follow-up, comparing patients attending rheumatology services with and without NCR. NCR was defined by the presence of: (1) office itself; (2) at least one dedicated nurse; and (3) its own appointment schedule. Variables included were (baseline, 6 and 12 months): (a) test to evaluate clinical activity of the disease, research and training, infrastructure of unit and resources of NCR and (b) tests to evaluate socio-demographics, work productivity (WPAI), use of services and treatments and quality of life. A total of 393 rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis patients were included: 181 NCR and 212 not NCR, corresponding to 39 units, 21 with NCR and 18 without NCR (age 53 + 11.8 vs 56 + 13.5 years). Statistically significant differences were found in patients attended in sites without NCR, at some of the visits (baseline, 6 or 12 months), for the following parameters: higher CRP level (5.9 mg/l ± 8.3 vs 4.8 mg/l ± 7.8; p < 0.005), global disease evaluation by the patient (3.6 ± 2.3 vs 3.1 ± 2.4), physician (2.9 ± 2.1 vs 2.3 ± 2.1; p < 0.05), use of primary care consultations (2.7 ± 5.4 vs 1.4 ± 2.3; p < 0.001) and worse work productivity. The presence of NCR in the rheumatology services contributes to improve some clinical outcomes, a lower frequency of primary care consultations and better work productivity of patients with rheumatic diseases.

RESUMO

By-products from the wax production process from carnauba palm (leaves), from the extraction of oil from macauba seeds (endocarp) and from pine nut production (shell) have been assessed for activated carbon production, using H3PO4 or CaCl2 for their chemical activation. The resulting activated charcoals have been thoroughly characterized by elemental and thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, electron scanning microscopy and N2 adsorption behavior. Subsequently, their adsorption capacity for the removal of rhodamine B (RhB) from aqueous solutions has been evaluated by studying different parameters: contact time, pH, adsorbent dose, initial dye concentration and solution temperature. The adsorption of RhB followed Freundlich's model in all cases. Kinetic studies indicate that the pseudo-second order model can be used for describing the dynamics of the adsorption process. Thermodynamic parameters have also been evaluated, indicating its endothermic and spontaneous nature. Finally, a preliminary analysis of the impact of cellulose content in the carbon precursor materials has been conducted, by using a mixture of native cellulose with one of the lignocellulosic materials.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Rickettsiosis caused by Rickettsia rickettsii is capable of infecting vertebrates, including humans. The symptoms are high fever, headache, myalgia, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and cough. Mortality can be up to 30% in untreated patients. AIMS: To prove the existence of rickettsiosis in Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico, because no human cases have been reported. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This observational, cross-sectional, descriptive study included 384 samples of humans in Ensenada, Baja California. Antibodies against R. rickettsii were measured with the kit R. rickettsii ELISA(®) Helica Biosystems, Inc., adapted for use in humans using human IgG conjugate antibodies. To determine the sensitivity and specificity, 32 human samples were submitted to IFA. Specific primers were used for the molecular diagnosis of R. rickettsii in dogs and ticks. RESULTS: The seroprevalence adjusted rickettsiosis in humans was 2.9% (95% CI: 0.8-5.3), seropositivity was not associated with sex, age, occupation, household, dogs, pet deworming program against ticks, the type of yard, and mobility of the dog between home and the street. CONCLUSIONS: With substantial agreement of k between ELISA and IFA, it follows that the results of seroprevalence of this work are reliable.

RESUMO

This five-year prospective study was designed to investigate periprosthetic bone remodeling associated with two cemented stem models, ABG-II (Stryker) and VerSys (Zimmer), randomly implanted in patients older than 75 years. The sample consisted of 64 cases (32, ABG-II; 32, VerSys). Inclusion criterion was diagnosis of osteoarthritis recommended for cemented total hip arthroplasty. Besides clinical study, Finite Element (FE) simulation was used to analyze biomechanical changes caused by hip arthroplasty. Bone Mineral Density (BMD) measurements showed a progressive increase in bone mass throughout the entire follow-up period for both stems, well correlated with FE results except in Gruen zones 4, 5, 6 for ABG-II and in zones 4, 5 for VerSys, denoting that remodeling in those zones does not depend on mechanical factors but rather on biological or physiological ones.

RESUMO

Serum steroid profiles were investigated in order to evaluate the potential use of circulating sex steroid levels as a tool for sex identification in brown trout. Changes in the serum concentrations of testosterone (T), progesterone (P), 17-ß-estradiol (E2), and cortisol (F) in wild and farmed mature female and male brown trout, Salmo trutta L., were measured in each season (January, May, July, and October) in six rivers and four hatcheries located in the north-west of Spain. Serum cortisol levels in farmed brown trout were significantly higher and showed a seasonal pattern opposite to that found in wild trout. Because levels of the hormones under study can be affected by disruptive factors such as exposure to phytoestrogens (which alters the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis) and infection with Saprolegnia parasitica (which alters the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis), both factors are taken into account.

RESUMO

This prospective study was designed to evaluate 196 Anatomique Benoist Giraud (ABG II) total hip arthroplasties which were implanted between September 1999 and December 2000. A minimum 11 years follow up was completed in 183 cases. The bearing surfaces were polyethylene-zirconia in 84 cases, polyethylene-metal in 42 and ceramic-ceramic in 57. Changes in the femoral stem design, in relation to the previous ABG I model, have led to a significant improvement in stress-shielding. Polyethylene wear rate was lower by more than 50% compared with non-crosslinked polyethylene. Excellent and good results were obtained in 90.32% of cases, and implant survival was 98.39% at the end of follow-up.

RESUMO

A 16-year-old, Lusitanian stallion was admitted to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital with a 12-hour history of signs of abdominal pain. Exploratory celiotomy was performed due to an inguinal hernia, and a second celiotomy was performed in response to the abdominal pain. The horse was euthanized and mesenteric venous thrombosis was diagnosed and considered likely due to peritonitis and systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS).

RESUMO

Bone fractures are among the most common and potentially serious injuries to the skeleton, femoral shaft fractures being especially severe. Thanks to recent advances in the area of in silico analysis, several approximations of the bone healing process have been achieved. In this context, the objective of this work was to simulate the initial phase of callus formation in long bones, without a pre-meshed domain in the 3D space. A finite element approach was computationally implemented to obtain the values of the cell concentrations along the whole domain and evaluate the areas where the biological quantities reached the thresholds necessary to trigger callus growth. A voxel model was used to obtain the 3D domain of the bone fragments and callus. A mesh growth algorithm controlled the addition of new elements to the domain at each step of the iterative procedure until complete callus formation. The implemented approach is able to reproduce the generation of the primary callus, which corresponds to the initial phase of fracture healing, independently of the fracture type and complexity, even in the case of several bone fragments. The proposed approach can be applied to the most complex bone fractures such as oblique, severely comminuted or spiral-type fractures, whose simulation remains hardly possible by means of the different existing approaches available to date.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Hip fractures are one of the most frequent fractures presenting to the emergency department and orthopedic trauma teams. The aim of this study was to determine the best indication and therapeutic technique for subtrochanteric fractures and unifying criteria when choosing the most suitable type of nail. MATERIALS AND METHODS: To analyze the influence of the material and the type of distal locking of intramedullary nails (static or dynamic), a femur model with a fracture in the subtrochanteric region stabilized with a long Gamma intramedullary nail was applied using finite element method (FEM) simulation. RESULTS: The mechanical study shows that titanium nails allow for greater micromobility at the fracture site, which could act as a stimulus for the formation of callus and consolidation of the fracture. In the mechanical study, the type of distal locking mainly affects mobility at the fracture site and stress in the cortical bone around the distal screws, without in any case exceeding values that may compromise the viability of the assembly or that may result in detrimental effects (in terms of mobility at the fracture site) for the consolidation process. CONCLUSION: Subtrochanteric fractures treated with titanium nail and static distal locking is safe and does not hinder consolidation.

RESUMO

The biocompatible polymer polyetheretherketone (PEEK) is a suitable candidate to be part of potential all-polymer total joint replacements, provided its use is associated with better osseointegration, mechanical performance, and wear resistance. Seeking to meet the aforementioned requirements, respectively, we have manufactured a PEEK composite with different fillers: carbon fibers (CF), hydroxyapatite particles (HA) and graphene platelets (GNP). The mechanical outcomes of the composites with combinations of 0, 1.5, 3.0 wt% GNP, 5 and 15 wt% HA and 30% of wt% CF concentrations pointed out that one of the best filler combinations to achieve the previous objectives was 30 wt% CF, 8 wt% HA and 2 wt% of GNP. The study compares the bioactivity of human osteoblasts on this composite prepared by injection molding with that on the material manufactured by the Fused Filament Fabrication 3D additive technique. The results indicate that the surface adhesion and proliferation of human osteoblasts over time are better with the composite obtained by injection molding than that obtained by 3D printing. This result is more closely correlated with morphological parameters of the composite surface than its wettability behavior.

RESUMO

Indoor agricultural offers efficient alternatives for intensive food production through automation technologies and controlled environments. Light plays a crucial role in plant development; however, photons captured by the crop are often wasted in empty spaces, resulting in low light efficiency and high energy costs. This research aims to simulate eight structural designs for an indoor lettuce crop, exploring different planting systems and light and culture bed combinations (static and mobile) to identify the most effective mechanism for light efficiency during crop growth. The simulations were carried out with spreadsheets based on applying formulas of yield in dry biomass per photosynthetic photons, lighting costs, harvest, and production. The results indicate that Circular Moving Light and Mobile Culture Bed with Quincunx Planting (CML-QM) and Circular Moving Light and Mobile Culture Bed with Linear Planting (CML-LPM) exhibit higher photon capture percentages (85% and 80%, respectively) and lower electricity consumption compared to static designs. The simulation results demonstrate the potential for significant improvements in photon capture and cost savings through optimized system designs. This investigation provides valuable insights for designing more efficient systems and reducing electricity consumption to enhance the capture of photosynthetic photons in indoor lettuce cultivation.

RESUMO

Halophytes are gaining considerable attention due to their applications in saline agriculture, phytoremediation, medicine, and secondary metabolite production. This study investigated the bioactive components present in Silene uniflora (sea campion) hydromethanolic extract, and their antimicrobial activity was evaluated both in vitro and ex situ against two strawberry phytopathogens, namely Botrytis cinerea (grey mold) and Colletotrichum nymphaeae (anthracnose fruit rot). The main identified phytochemicals were mome inositol, saturated fatty acid esters, and cyclotetracosane. In vitro tests demonstrated complete inhibition of the growth of B. cinerea and C. nymphaeae at extract concentrations of 1000 and 1500 µg·mL-1, respectively, with an activity comparable to that of fosetyl-Al and substantially higher than that of azoxystrobin. This activity was improved upon conjugation with chitosan oligomers (COS), yielding inhibition values of 750 and 1000 µg·mL-1. The COS-S. uniflora conjugate complexes were then tested as protective treatments for postharvest storage of strawberry fruit, resulting in high protection against artificially inoculated B. cinerea and C. nymphaeae at doses of 3750 and 5000 µg·mL-1, respectively. The reported results open the door to the valorization of this halophyte as a source of biorationals for strawberry protection.

RESUMO

Ticks of the Rhipicephalus sanguineus complex are known as the brown dog ticks. This complex groups at least 12 species of ticks that are distributed worldwide. On the American continents, R. sanguineus sensu stricto (s.s.), is distributed in temperate areas, while Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato (s.l.), also called "tropical lineage" is distributed in tropical regions. Previous analyses of brown dog ticks from Mexico have identified the so-called tropical lineage and the country generally has a climate more favorable for these ticks (> 20o C in average). In addition, some pathogens thought to be transmitted by this lineage (such as Ehrlichia canis, and Rickettsia rickettsii) are prevalent in Mexico. Herein we aim to contribute to the study of brown dog ticks by providing morphological identification and molecular analysis of mt 12S rDNA and 16S rDNA sequences from ticks collected from 12 states in Mexico. Our results indicate that the tropical lineage of R. sanguineus s.l., recently redescribed as R. linnaei is widely distributed in Mexico.
